    In my opinion, as someone who prides himself on my musical taste and knowledge, that this song is one of THE greatest rock songs of all times.
    It got some recognition and a lot of air play on the radio at the time it came out but it is far more incredible than most songs that got more attention.
    It is incredibly written, performed and produced. It has everything a timeless hit needs to be immortalized.

    • @13_13k
      @13_13k ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Spo-Dee-O-Dee --- you are correct about the duration of songs like Jane and the time that it came out. Music was starting to go through a change that not many believed would be as huge and impacting as it turned out to be. Rock bands of the 70s, found themselves going from arenas to being mocked and called dinosaur rock all within just a couple of years.
      There are other songs by other bands of that time that I feel the same way about like Stone Cold and Can't Happen Here both by Rainbow.
      I am a product of living through that era at that prime age. Born in '65 youngest of four, listening to classic album rock from very young, like six or seven yrs old listening to my siblings albums, Zeppelin, Stones, Bowie, Sabbath, Floyd, The Who, Yes, etc... . Also growing up in the heart of Los Angeles, I was 15 in 1980 and things were being stirred up in the music business. Punk, post punk, new wave, funk, rap, were all causing people to abandon their rock roots, for a few years if not forever. So those songs like Jane and other really really great songs that normally would have had longevity were shelved by radio stations, fans, the labels and sometimes the bands themselves.
      Thanks for your reply to my comment. It was dead on and thought provoking.

    I was 16 in 67, and had been playing guitar for only two years when Jefferson Airplane came out with Sombody to Love. I still love this song today as much as I did when it first came out. It was a great example of 60s psychedelic. I grew up listening to the greatest rock music ever recorded. I'm old as fuck, but at least I'm not a teen today listening to the dog they now call music.

    I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard this song the first time. My boyfriend and I had just pulled into my driveway, the song started on the radio as I drove and parked the car and we just sat there dumbfounded, listening until it was over. We both looked at each other and said who the hell was that... did some research and discovered it was off of Starship's latest album which featured Mickey Thomas, their new male vocalist who replaced Marty Balin. It was magic. BTW, check out the video... Craig Chaquico on guitar just shreds on the solo. While there are lots of guitarists that "dance" with their guitar, none can compete with Chaquico and this solo. JS

    Toto did have an influence on this song. Starship heard " Hold the Line" and knew the keyboard intro and "chunka chunka" riff of Lukather on guitar was a great combination. " Jane" was their version, so to speak, of "Hold the Line" "Jane" is a certified rock classic.

    This is actually Mickey Thomas's debut album with the group. Jefferson Starship had lost both of their previous lead singers on their 1978 tour: Grace Slick's alcohol issues had gotten out of control, and after having to finish the tour doing all the lead work, Marty Balin was stressed out and tired of touring and quit.
    (Grace came back for one song on the next album and full time after that. Marty stayed solo.)
    Plus they'd just lost their drummer, John Barbata, who had also been in The Turtles and Crosby Stills Nash & Young. John was in a major car wreck, needed a year to recover and decided to quit music. Fortunately, Aynsley Dunbar had just quit Journey, so the bigger San Francisco group was glad to scoop him up. With the addition of Mickey Thomas, and with guitarist Craig Chaquico feeling the band had something to prove and ready to cut loose, the stage was set.
    And they pretty much burned it down. Whole album rocks. (Once rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner leaves [and sues to take the "Jefferson" with him, the reconfigured "Starship" gets more poppy and ballady, but Mickey still has those pipes, as you yourself have found.)

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    From a mixed point of view though, I thought the keyboard was done perfectly because it needs to at least have a bit of an edge to it to cut through the mix on all the layers pile up and then it just gets exposed there briefly every now and then and it works because it's so percussive. I actually love it.
    Would I like it for an extended solo? Maybe, maybe not, just depends on who was playing it and what they were doing with it. To my ears, it is the ideal mixing and tracking choice for this situation.

    I was one of those people that recommended this one, and there were many, from the Elvin Bishop video. Craig Chaquico (Guitarist) is no slouch either. The band itself claims Toto's "Hold The Line" heavily influenced "Jane." I've actually somehow seen Starship 3 times, all with Mickey Thomas and twice with Grace Slick still in the group. The material they can pull from: Find Your Way Back, Stranger, (Probably better known as "Familiar Stranger"), No Way Out, Layin It on the Line, We Built This City, Sara, Tomorrow Doesn't Matter Tonight, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, It's Not Over (Til It S Over), It's Not Enough. At concerts you'd see people reacting to remembering these songs that they'd forgotten, mostly because they were there for We Built This City, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now and Sara. Mickey delivers another tremendous performance on the ballad "Sara." That's my next recommendation from this band for you guys to check out. This was a great video. I knew it would be because I knew this song was going to hit you right. I don't always remember the first time I heard songs I love. A lot of miles (years) have gone by since I was alive when all the songs you review came out. I like to think I had these same reactions you're having. Keep doing what you do. I love it!

    The Toto song "Hold the Line" also features a killer guitar riff with a pulsating keyboard riff over it like Jane has (though for musician geeks, you'll notice that "Hold the Line's" keyboard riff is a triplet eighth note riff while Jane's keyboard riff is straight eighth notes). The start of the guitar solo on "Jane" is such a great kick in the butt. Mickey Thomas' vocals are fantastic.
    The previous Jefferson Starship album featured the top 10 hit "Count on Me" with Marty Balin on lead vocals. Not the banger that Jane is, but a good song worth a reaction.
