This band has always worked well together. Great feel for each other without losing the grip on the soul of the song. Steve Perry - The Voice, Neal Schon - the real driving force of the music and his solo work is great compliment to Steve's vocals, Ross Valory - steady anchor, yet carries the music through the changes without being obtrusive, Jonathan Cain - great writer with perfect keyboard over/under lays. Steve Smith - one of the finest drummers in the business with a good dose of jazz. All members have satisfying backing vocals to Stev's excellent voicing.
Always one of my wife's and my favorite bands. Faithfully is our wedding song.

And this is considered the classic line up: Neal Schon (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Ross Valory (Bass, Backing Vocals), Steve Perry (Lead Vocals), Steve Smith (Drums, Percussion), Jonathan Cain (Keyboards, Backing Vocals), but was like their fifth line up. Their original line up was: Neal Schon (Guitar, Backing Vocals), Gregg Rolie (Lead Vocals, Keyboards), Ross Valory (Bass, Backing Vocals), George Tickner (Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals) and Prairie Prince (Drums, Percussion).

Steve Perry has often said its the single hardest Journey song to sing, yet he sounds so much better on it live than he did in the studio recording! Its honestly a shame that more people haven't reacted to it. That ending alone is so far superior to what 95% of the singers out there could manage.

Steve Perry is without a doubt the best vocalist in the history of music! His ability to do the things vocally that he does is so amazing. You feel every word he sings in your soul. He touches every emotion in your body all at one time. He is unmatched! Beth if you want to check out his Traces album listen to Sun Shines Gray , we’re still here, call on me, could we be something again. The whole album is great. Of course he sings in a lower range but he is still the one and only Steve Perry!

I’m case someone hasn’t already said, Schon and Rolie didn’t want Steve Perry in the band. They wanted a screamer, like Robert Plant, and the singer Perry ended up replacing Robert Fleischman. The band’s manager Herbie Herbert forced them to take Perry because they needed to get on the radio with their fourth album (first with Perry) or they would be dropped. The first song Schon and Perry wrote together, Patiently, came together in 15 minutes, and from then on everyone saw the light, that this was the new Journey.
To be clear, they recognized the talent, Perry just didn’t fit their vision of Journey, until they wrote together.

Guitarist Neal Schon and bassist Ross Valroy, from this lineup, were founding members, but the original lineup was rounded out by vocalist and keyboardist Greg Rollie, rhythm guitarist George Tickner and drummer Aynsley Dunbar. Perry was brought in on their fourth album, Infinity, when they decided that they wanted a stronger lead vocalist.
