The haunting magic comes at 5:23 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.

@@pbrucpaul I know she’s not Latina . She lived down in Mexico in her childhood to mid teens . She speaks perfect Spanish and did not learn how to write in English till she was in her teens . She was born in the states but has that part of the Mexican culture that will never go away . And yes I have a bias for her but really people put her down in favor of an super overrated Cass. By the way Mexican hippie was the name that John used to presented her in their performances🤔🙏🏼😁
@@pbrucpaul by the way I heard her solo and she is awesome . Her voice is sweet kind of like Olivia Newton John . Delicate and velvety . But she was not a natural singer John made her learn how to sing so she could go on tour with him . Michelle was considered one of the best sopranos of her time . So that will tell you how much she developed from zero . Cass was not acceptable to John because she could not sing some high notes but fortunately for her she found the way and was accepted by John . Cass makes the group look just like normal people in their image . The big mushroom 🍄 John called her . And the Canadian citizen had to me the best voice in the group that’s Denny alright
@@reneaguilar3471 John was reluctant to have Cass in the group because of her weight -- he made up the other excuse after the fact, to save face. Cass could reach any and all notes. It was an image thing.
Denny had such a fantastic singing voice! I think he's very much under appreciated.

He was an amazing singer. Too bad this lady cuts the sound right before his first vocal solo and then talks right as he "got down on my knees"...

This is one song I have never understood why anyone has ever recorded a cover version of. This is absolute 100% nailed on perfection! Cannot ever be improved, so leave well alone.

Everyone is scared to record it. No one can do a better job, This is the only version that’s needed. We can listen to it and enjoy it forever!
My sister and I did a cover of this, with her singing the harmony part and playing her bouzouki, with me singing the lead and my guitar at an open mic. I've also covered it on a double-track taping.
That`s easy. They loved it. Covering a song isn`t (always) about improving it or trying to do so. Its not about competition with the original. It`s not always about trying to make it your own. What makes you want to sing along is the same urge that makes many musicians want to cover it. Really not that hard to understand, unless you have a closed mindset and believe covering is only about improvement.
You should hear Mama Kass sing "Dream a Little Dream of Me." That really shows how beautiful her voice was. I think she had the best voice in the group.
Certainly the most projecting and distinctive...but what is amazing cool to me is how her voice can fit in like she's just another one of the church choir ensemble...imho
Cass doing "Leaving On A Jet Plane" with John Denver shows her harmonization better. Maybe "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" for a Cass single.

For those of us, who are old enough, like me, this song touches us like no other. It is absolutely timeless and wonderful.
John Phillips was an amazing songwriter and as importantly, an amazing arranger.
Cass Elliott's voice was a once-in-a-generation example of perfection. Put her in harmony in any group and that group is instantly better than it was.
I recall watching a younger Cass with 2 other heftier young women singers in Ed Sullivan show. She wasn't a rock or folk singer at all in her roots. Pure pop singer. Real singer Denny and Cass had to sing louder (you can hear their distinctive voices mostly), so it's real a duet group with harmony backups. Denny's wife just there to sell records as eye candy, and she knew it.
John Phillips head some amazing talents but Man that that come with some serious addiction problems. I heard he was such a terrible alcoholic/drug user that at Keith Richards threw him out of a party he was throwing because he was so wild and out of control. To go so far even Keith Richards has a problem with you, That's a new low. It sad that such amazing talent comes with such problems sometimes.

Mama Cass was a leading light in the whole Laurel Canyon singer songwriter scene. She actually took Graham Nash to meet Crosby and Stills and told them they would "sound great together". I told you she was in the audience at the Monterey Pop Festival. As a mtter of fact the guitar player in this (John Phillips) was co-promotor of the festival.
The harmony groups of the late 60s to late 70s were so damn good and The Mamas and the Papas were one of the best.
The Association, The Byrds also.
These people here. These people were decades before my time in 1984, they were more towards my parents time in the 60s, they were 50’ & 51’ babies, and this was one of my mom’s favorites. And it’s always been one of mine. I love songs from this era.

Michelle Phillips is a mother of Chynna Phillips from the Wilson Phillips group and of course the Wilson sisters are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys Michelle later became a well-known actress on TV

My first favourite band. As a small child I was obsessed with my tape of Mamas and Papas and I totally wore out the old cassette.

Dennys' vocal break gets me Every. Single. TIME!!!
"I Call Your Name" is probably my favorite song by them. Incredibly strong solo parts by Cass and Denny and some of the most complex harmonies of any of their songs.
I also love their version of "I Call Your Name". It is the only Beatles song that I actually prefer someone else's cover. The Beatles original is fine - but I like John Phillips' arrangement for The Mamas and The Papas even better - and Mama Cass belts out that vocal. The harmonies on Helplessly Hoping by Crosby, Stills and Nash are exquisite.
They do a lot of "split off" harmony in "Monday, Monday"
Singing along to the studio track, of course. No telling how many times their vocals were multiplied.

@@pyrmontbridge4737 constantly. doubletracking (stacking multiple takes of the same singer and line in one track) was key to the whole pop-sound since beat music. as with stacking detuned oscillators in a synthesizer, the slight variance across multiples of the same line fattens the sound. like giving a yellow letter on white background a light orange margin and a beige shadow...
this here is a double choir plus soloists arrangement. I guess on the record all bandmembers did both the call-choir and answer-choir, and layered multiple takes to get the big choir sound.
and agreed, seeing just 4 people, 1 guitar and no microphones on a stage and hearing a band with choir is weird
Cass at 5:23 layers "Dreamin'" over everyone else, including herself. That one little variance really transforms the song.
@@pyrmontbridge4737 Getting into the 70s, many groups wouldn't perform on tv because of the sound quality. Music engineering was advancing faster than quality television sets.
Another harmony band the 60's is the Seekers. They had a huge hit in Georgy Girl. They started as a pure folk group and have a huge catalog. One of my favorite songs by them is I'll Never Find Another You.
Agreed. Judith Durham's voice is second only to Karen Carpenter's.

Their "look" evolved throught the years to a more hippie style, especially the guys. Their sound remained pure and elegant.
It was pretty standard to not be a "live performance" at that time on TV. Sound issues primarily. I can't forget their song "Monday, Monday" it played ever day going to school on the school bus. This is in the period of folk singers and they would stand and sing or play. One way to see the difference is to watch Cher's show. She dressed up a bit more but the technique of just standing for a vocal performance with perhaps dancers on stage with them was paramount.
Denny and Cass were the vocal greats. Listen to Creeque Alley for the fun history of how they formed and their connection to the byrds, loving spoonful, etc.
I started chuckling when you were discussing scoops and how groups should do them in unison….because I KNEW Mama Cass’ own scoop was coming. She sings “dreeeeeeeeeeeamiiiin’” while the other 3 sing “California dreamin’”. To every rule, there’s an exception. :-)

When I was with my Aunt at a cemetery in Halifax N.S., paying respect to my Uncle, a few years ago, she told me that Denny was buried somewhere in the same cemetery. Local boy home for good.

Better late than never!!!! Once again we are reminded of just how young you are. Youth is a good thing. You have the heart and soul of someone from this time period... Mama Cass was one HECK of a good singer. Clear and easy delivery without strain. Just pure talent and SKILL. I shall sound like an old goat now - they don't make them like this anymore!! Their harmonies were pure and tight. Super good stuff! Take care girl....

I would suggest "Creeque Alley" - it is loosely the story of their formation as a band - and a great song.
There are certainly modern vocal bands that are at least on par with this but it's difficult to compare without accounting for the innovation and evolution of pop music and musicians back in the 50s - 70s. I think a band that would match up well with Mamas and Papas today is Little Big Town. Try almost any of their songs but I would recommend Boondocks or Pontoon to start.

If you really want a thrill, listen to the song "Wild Women" by The Big Three. Cass Elliot was in that group before the Mamas and the Papas. She was an exceptional talent and this song really showcases her voice and stylings.
I hear this and I vision the beautiful Coastline of California like from San Simeon to Big Sur and then to Marin County and Stinson Beach. It Came out in '65 and loved it!

Their version of "My Heart Stood Still" is absolutely stunning. Michelle Phillips has said it's her favorite song they ever recorded.
The 3-part harmonies of Fleetwood Mac are pretty amazing. The Chain - live performance 1997 is a standout.
The Eagles, too. Their 5-part harmony on Seven Bridges Road is fire. And Beach Boys, of course, had amazing harmony, too.
The band had a mythical being they named "Harvey" which came into being when they sang in close harmony... sort of a fifth harmonic voice that seemed to appear out of nowhere. They'd work on a new harmony part and when that seemingly fifth vocal harmonic would bloom from their four voices they'd say: "Harvey's here!" and they knew they'd nailed the part.

I believe The Righteous Brothers had a similar quality. When they sang together it was almost as if they became a third voice.
oh the same harvey in those old jimmy Stewart movies ? he had a invisible rabbit only he could see and people thought he was crazy walking around talking to him haha very good movie.

The Statler Brothers' harmonies were impeccable. You should check out some of their work, such as "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You," "Bed Of Rose's," "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine?" and "Class of '57."

Mama Cass and the band members conceived and directed the first major rock festival, which was the Monterey Festival. It was this festival that revealed Janis Joplin and also Jimi Hendrix. So Mama Cass wasn't "in the audience"; but yes she was giving Janis Joplin the chance of her life.

There's a documentary on which producer Lou Adler recalls John Phillips listening back to the over-lapped vocals on some of The Mamas Papas recordings and he started hearing harmonies that weren't even recorded within the mix. It's funny what your mind can do to layered harmonies.
This isn't a live performance, they're not that easy to find unfortunately, but amazing when you do

Fun fact Denny Doherty became the host/ narrator for the Canadian kid show Theodore Tugboat. Film in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This song was actually first recorded by the great Barry McGuire, who was a close friend of the band. When the group made their own recording later the same year (1965), they actually re-used the backing track from the McGuire recording.
It was written by John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas, and the group also, as previously mentioned, performed the backing vocals of the McGuire recording, as heard here.

Awesome choice and great singer mama Cass was. She was the whole package, jingles, solo, harmony and group or solo, she did it all. May i suggest a solo song of her like "words of love" or "dream a little dream of me". Or a deep insight video of her, you'll see how great her music repertoire is. Years back, someone compared an artist to her, i don't think they meant in a bad way but her voice speaks loud in tone, emotion, range and possibilities are endless in her.

And its fun to hear you talk about group harmony. Everything you mentioned is true in the best 4 part harmony groups of a special style of singing... much advanced the past 20 years.... barbershop quartet / chorus harmony. Take a listen some time!

Denny lost out on the rock lifestyle after his "friends" spent all his money. He moved back to Canada (Nova Scotia, I believe) and hosted a kid's tv show in the school he attended. And later seemed kind of sad that he rejected Cass, who was in love with him.
When The Mamas & The Papas started there was already a stream of vocal combos - almost or completely a capella. A maybe more elitist example are The Swingle Singers (a vocal group formed in 1974 in England by Ward Swingle. The group replaced Swingle's earlier "Swingle Singers", formed in 1962 in Paris - began as session singers mainly doing backing vocals for singers such as Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf. Christiane Legrand, sister of Michel Legrand, was the original lead soprano with the group.) for example:

At the very beginning of Folk-Rock and the L.A. Sound (Laurel Canyon: all the canyon documentaries and musician album references [Ladies of the Canyon, Joanie Mitchell] where they all lived) which had the best studios to record in (especially the one in Van Nuys). The California "scene" moved to the San Francisco sound by 1967 by the time Mama Cass and Mama's and Papas sang at Monterrey Pops festival (Big Brother and Holding Co., Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, Scott McKenzie's San Francisco, etc.). The threat to British-killed "purist" folk singer boom of early 1960s, Peter, Paul, and Mary (themselves a recording company-formed group) is wonderfully reflected in PP&M's derisive (or jealous) "I love Rock 'N Roll Music" attack on Hollywood-produced rock Momas and Papas.

I am not always a fan of covers, but a group called Foxes and Fossils cover this classic. Perhaps you might want to give them a listen. And by the way, from what I heard these folks reportedly partied a little. They had very good harmonies. So being high did not effect that quality... Plus that was par for the course back then so I have been told.
