The 70s wouldn't have been the same without Jefferson Starship. A great song and great reaction. I miss rock music. What will it take to revive the talents of signing and musicians being able to actually play instruments. Sal, I'd love to hear your reaction to Jefferson Starship's "Count On Me." Mickey Thomas, the lead singer on this track, was also the voice on "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" by Elvin Bishop. I still have this release, "Earth," on 8-track that I bought new in 1978.

@@jodij6280 I agree! Starship, like most other music in the 80s, was a burned out, pale reflection of what music was in the 70s.

Jefferson Airplane was the original band...which morphed into Jefferson Starship...and later became just Starship. They went through several eras with different lead singers. Grace Slick was the lead singer through the early years, but later gave way to Marty Balin in the mid 70s and then Mickey Thomas came on in the late 70s and 80s. Grace remained with the band throughout the band's entire history.

One of the most cinematic moments I remember as a kid in the late 70's (I was around 13) sitting in the back seat of my older cousin's muscle car(I dont recall make or model) while he was driving with his friend in the front passenger seat. We were flying and I was just enjoying the experience of seeing what life and conversation would be like when I was old enough to drive with my friends. I was silent the entire time which was fine since my cousin and his friend were ignoring my presence anyway.
Radio was cranked and "Jane" came on the radio. We hit a redlight right as the solo began. The friend in the passenger seat said(very loudly over the cranked radio) "That guy thinks he's a badass" in reference to Craig Chiquito and his guitar solo. Right as the light turned green my cousin replied in an even louder voice "Thats because he IS a badass" and then dropped the hammer as well as a good portion of the rubber from his rear tires onto the asphalt as we peeled out and away from the intersection. Tire smoke, engine roar, and Jane cranked all blended into an amazing moment in time that I have never forgotten.

White Rabbit was Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Starship was basically Paul Kantner, Grace Slick and (sometimes) Marty Balin, all from Jefferson Airplane, with other new members. At this point Marty had left the band and Grace left the band for rehab. Paul needed a new lead vocalist and hired in Micky to fill the spot. As Paul said at the time "What else am I going to do? Go sell cars?" The title Freedom at Point Zero reflects that attitude. This is the point when JS started its long decline to becoming the Micky Hit Song Band that led Paul to leave the band. He sued the band over the use of "Jefferson" as he was the only original member from the Airplane. He won and they evolved into Starship. This is actually a strong LP but this song kinda got played to death. The title song and Girl w/the Hungry Eyes are rockers as well. Caroline and Ride the Tiger are well worth a listen. That is Paul's son, Alex, on the cover of the LP.

I learned later it was the only time he did that.

The musicians were - Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre , Winery Dogs) on drums , Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake , Trans Siberian Orchestra) on guitar , and a relatively unknown singer named Dino Jelusick on vocals , bass & keyboards. Dino is the best rock/hard rock singer i've heard in the last 15 yrs. Check out their version you'll be pleasantly surprised.

given the turn that the modern world is currently taking at all levels and includes creativity in education, any bands will be able to reach the degree of these three decades 60,70 and 80

Mickey Thomas doing what he does..... WAY underrated vocalist... Sang in Elvin Bishop's 'Fooled Around and Fell In Love"...and a couple more songs that escape my memory at the moment

Phil Spector concept Solid Wall of Sound (plural walls of sound) A popular music production technique, developed in the 1960s, in which a number of musicians perform the same instruments or parts in unison and the resulting sound is re-recorded in an echo chamber. A densely layered sound, often a piece of music.

Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship are two different iterations of the group. Airplane was the early days with Grace Slick taking lead vocals. Because of her drug issues she was in and out of the group and by the time of Starship she was pretty much not welcome anymore. An early Airplane track you'd enjoy is VOLUNTEERS from Woodstock.
Starship killed it with WE BUILT THIS CITY, which you'd really enjoy too!❤😊

Grace left Jefferson Starship for a while to go to rehab but she was welcomed back into the group when she got her act together.

You need to check out Stranger and Winds Of Change for the duet of Grace Slick who did the vocals on White Rabbit and Mickey Thomas who is the vocalist on this track.
