I hate when people say you can't get into it now, I won my fantasy football league last year and part of my friends punishment was they had to make a group ironman with me. 3 out of 4 of them still are playing to this day and only one of them has played in the past. Ironically enough he is the one who doesn't really play anymore
It's almost like it's just a good game. And it's a very different game from what it was in 07, it is a mix between modern ideas and the best of what other games lost from that time. It's kind of like what shovel knight is in platformers. Oldschool graphics, still amazing gameplay, the old ideas meet the new.
I think the hardest part for players who didn't play it in the prime years, is the graphics and lack of hand holding that they are used to BUT when it clicks it clicks even now for new players ( their wouldn't be the numbers their are still today without new players constantly coming in) I've played pretty much every MMO their is to play and nothing holds me in long enough and allows me to play with different amounts of attention and time, plus the charm and progression system that isn't based on fomo and constant power creep.
@@illuminated1158 To me personally it was that it felt like... Dead? Not an mmo? Not a single time throughout my try (f2p - lucky bryo kill - bond) i had to interact with other players, there is even no global chat. As a sorta shared-world singleplayer it's fine, number grows up monkey brain happy, but i found it missing any social aspect whatsoever.
@@mr_oger That's really a symptom of the modern internet and its users, as everywhere you go is like that. Occasionally you will still run into one of us creaky oldtimers who chitty-chat like everyone used to do online back in the wee-gone past, but that is only an occasion.
@@TheDoomerBlox I'm talking not exactly about people being proactive in talking to eachother, but that game's systems do not push you to come in contact with other players. Like, for example, Bryo or Elvarg are designed to be solo, but if instead they required 2 or 3 players - boom, you have player interaction, even if it's a bit too forced and rough even as an example - you got the idea.
This right here. It can be as 0 to 100 as the player wants. With any percentage of difficulty in between as well. It is uncanny how "modular" the difficulty is for all sorts of players.
8:35 Not me currently doing tempoross to level fishing so I can complete Hero's Quest so I can finish the final step of this clue to then finally finish my slayer task as this video came up in my recommended feed.
Im currently engaging in a cognitive behavioral therapy i invented for that. Its called pet hunting. Trust me, seeing your king black dragon kill count go up does not release happy juice. Especially when runelite reminds you that you've left 20 mil in black dhides on the ground.
The real answer is, OSRS is genuinely fun without being mentally taxing. It's what people want in video games lately. A game they can afk thousands of different tasks and still have fun progressing. Afk is a loose term, honestly it should be called "attention free" tasks. The point is, it's what we like deep deep down. We don't want to always be utterly maxed out on adrenaline playing call of duty every day. And if you do, and you are depressed, ayyeee here's your sign... OSRS is the embodiment of "Achievement" and without pay to win bs it remains something people revere in terms of the accomplishments some accounts can achieve. ANY account can achieve, and just by playing the game as casually as possible. Then you get into late game and get into more complicated things and it's just amazing and satisfying. Just my opinion :)
I have written down both of your usernames and if Jason doesn’t say happy birthday to idyl I will assume he died and If you don’t come here to mourn him… I will assume you both died and mourn you both!
I got side tracked once like 8 months ago when I came back to osrs after a break. I told myself I would get elite void. Then I was like well bosses are cool so I should get hard CBAs to speed up this grind for void. Now I’ve done the inferno and I still don’t have elite void
I firmly believe nostalgia has nothing to do with the games popularity. Its just the best mmo, hell even one of the best games around. The love and passion oozes off it
It's a shame that it's so damn grindy. It's like i want to play but then I do and I realize that the gameplay is literally just clicking the same shit for hours on end.
@@Phizzuurp if you're going to afk you might as well be botting. I botted for a while and I honestly had more fun managing the bot than I did playing the game manually.
@@SelectKiko Clicking the same shit for hours is literally how the game works. You DON'T want to play it. Also botting is for absolute virgins that's so pathetic.
when something isn't made to look hyper real then the imagination fills in the gaps both story and visuals and gives you a better experience than real life even. Your take on it is spot on! And the first I have heard of it. Thanks. I played from 2001-2004 and was captivated. I thought I'd play until i was 90 years old. Now I really appreciate the game still but I couldn't go back because adult life obligations and other hobbies don't allow for the "grind" and I wouldn't play any other game because I love the grind. Getting to rune mining and 99 fishing and woodcutting in RS Classic taught me the skill of determination and willpower which are still in me to this day and have gotten me some great things in life.
Because it’s fucking dope. I can chill on mobile and afk fish sharks, which gears me up for combat, where when I’m on desktop, I can then use those supplies to turn this medieval cookie clicker into a 100bpm rhythm game. The progression feels very satisfying with little upgrades feeling massive (thread of elidinis) Suffice it to say, it’s got range baby, range. (Not the skill, but broad appeal and engagement levels for each skill and money maker).
The fact that so many people in middle school / high school learned how to play runescape back in the day is a testament to its ability to teach people how to play it. I remember playing on release at like 14 and had no issue picking it up. You just do what you want to do and the game will teach you as go without you even knowing you are learning. I think its popular now for this reason along with it being a GREAT game to keep you occupied while doing a mind numbing / repetitive task. I used to play RS during down time in WoW raids and it made both experiences so much better since runescape is super relaxing but boring, and WoW raids can be super stressful but equally exciting. Playing runescape during wow raids literally removed the boring part from runescape and the stress part from the WoW raid.
RuneScape and old school are just really great sandbox experiences that always gives you something to do. It’s unique that the game is about the journey, not the endgame that your supposed to rush to
When I was a kid I saw my older cousin play it and the day I logged on got me hooked back in 2008. Today I’m nearly 30 and still play this game. Maxed out in RS3 (except the skills which came out after EOC) and maxed all over again on OSRS. One of the biggest joys I had was being able this game when I bought my first appartement without being interrupted by my parents 😂. I’ve had over 5 accounts all being banned for botting/random stuff but my one true main is still standing.
I'm a returning player that after EoC I would log in every 3-4 years. I heard of OSRS and thought, man, I dont want to grind this again. I made an OSRS account 2 months ago and realized how much I was missing. Your points of what makes OSRS popular are spot on. It's not just nostalgia, its that there is nothing like it out there. Great video!
Been playing Runescape since 2005-2006 so I lived thru the days of the real Oldschool Runescape days as a kid. Playing now feels a combination of nostalgia and excitement as they keep adding new things to the game. As the saying goes: you never quit runescape, you only take long breaks. Happy scaping !
@@GabrielScoville-v9k I'm not actually sure, methods have gotten so crazy these days im sure some sweaty people might be able to do it faster. but then again, what even is "complete"? No one will ever complete the collection log, not enough time in 100 lifetimes to do that with the 3rd age drop rates.
Because OSRS is "safe", and of course because it is a genuinely good game. It doesn't have pushy microtransactions, it hasn't been designed to be frustrating in order to boost MTX sales, it most likely won't crash and burn overnight(again). It has no FOMO, you can logout, then login 1½ years later and pick off exactly where you left off. All your of progress intact, none of it invalidated let alone outright removed. In short everything we've come to detest in modern MMOs and games in general just isn't present in OSRS. It is as its name suggests, Old School.
The lack of MTX is because RS3's MTX economy holds up OSRS. If whales in RS3 stopped whaling, OSRS loses a lot of its funding and they'd need to make up for it somehow. Servers are fucking expensive. RS3 is the Jesus being sacrificed on the cross so that OSRS can thrive. There's no other MTX-free MMO because what other company runs 2 MMOs simultaneously using one to fund the other? If you're making a MMO it needs to be self sufficient and OSRS is not self sufficient. It would lose money without RS3's contribution.
Another thing really interesting, is that this game DID get a huge graphical overhaul back in the day, but the community of OSRS loves what it is so much that we asked for it back, and luckily Jagex listened to us. Because of that is the reason for RS3 and OSRS being seperate, but also keeping the older integrity of Old School Runescape. I just love the community. 😁 Very much a game tight to my childhood.
I am thirty years old, and one my my reigning achievements on my life has been getting ONE skill to 99. Magic. It took like four months of grinding for runes...
i love the line “this SHOULD suck…” like its a massive world with no hints on what to do but that’s why its so awesome, its true freedom and exploration at its peak. you can go fishing or cooking nearby or go walk thousands of tiles away to see whats over there and the game doesnt stop you (well except some areas)
My life truly started and will/is ending with RuneScape. I used to run home from school off the bus to get 30 minutes of RuneScape in on my parents computer before they saw I was “gonna cause a virus”. My grandma let me sneak the game time in because she watched me I appreciate her so much for it. Literally 16+ years later and played several MMORPGS for 100’s+ hours RuneScape is the goat! So much a part of my life. So many breaks, on and offs. Getting mobile time in between responsibilities, work, and family. Absolutely one of my favorite things ever. I thank jagex for giving me an experience that couldn’t be replaced
Just letting you know this is also my Dad's birthday and he let me use his work laptop back in 03' to play just like you, and it was mind boggling. Now 31 and still grinding away on my character i made because of McTile that reinvigorated my love of the game so much that i browse r/2007scape while testing AAA games for a living
As someone who has younger people in his community it's hard for me to explain to them why OSRS is my favorite MMO / one of my favorite games. Now I can show them this vid instead! It probably won't help but I'll do it anyway 😅
The thing about runescape is that it has something for everyone. We have a grandma in our frog clan that just enjoys making cannonballs and farming. So that’s what she does, she makes cannonballs and farms and it makes her happy
Yea, i never played rs before osrs, but now im giga-addicted. Maxed an ironman account and a uim. Nostalgia has nothing to do with my love for the game.
It's kinda funny and feels like we've come full circle in that regard, because I remember when I was playing around 2005-2007 as a teenager, a lot of people had this attitude of "You guys don't play with game music muted? lol what's wrong with you, the game's music sucks!" while blasting their favourite rock band or something haha. I don't think I've ever seen a video from back then that actually just had the game music, there was always some loud track playing over the top, but these days it's super common for OSRS youtubers to make a video with some calm in-game track in the background.
Mr. President. I have been sharing this exact narrative with people extensively over the last month so happy to hear almost the exact same love reflected in your video. I think another thing that adds to it's popularity is the that all your progress and grinds are permanent. And all new content is optional (unless you play an iron) and you can do it at your own pace. When new items come into the game it doesn't make your current items obsolete, if I haven't played in 6 months usually the new quests guide me to the new areas and bosses, if I want to go play another game for a few months everything is waiting for me when I come back.
I've binged like 6 of your videos at this point. Your repeated mentions of Runescape are so sweet, it makes me happy that you're sharing your passions without worrying about being judged. Keep making the vids you wanna make, dude.
One unique thing that rs has is also very rich, coherent and interconnected world. A lot of mmos worlds are vast empty zone filled with a lot of mobs that are categorized by how strong they are, so it basicly goes to: I am that strong I go there, when im stronger i go elsewhere and never return. Where Runescape has a world that is just one chaotic breathing world filled with all kinds of stuff, adds a lot to immersion
runescape lore, and quests released after RS classic ended, are actually really good too. Can't say that about most MMOs when MMO quests are "go kill 4 wolves". Helps add to the immersion of the world
I used to play this when I was a kid I think it's so funny that a game with PlayStation 1 graphics Is still killing it these days. Truly shows that gameplay is king.
Your example of training fishing to get into the fishing guild just to complete a clue scroll is exactly what I did. Trained fishing for hours just for some mediocre 100k worth of loot.... Now fishing is my highest skill and I don't fish anymore
God, the sidetracking. I got a Hard Clue that needed "Regal Pump" from the final quest in Kourend, which I've never done before (this was a year ago) And I got sidetracked getting 100% favour, doing all the side-quests and exploring the Island for the first time. Literally a 100+ hour clue scroll step because I kept getting sidetracked... But honestly my favourite memory of the game.
This is one of the best Runescape video of all time. It's genuine, wholesome, accurate, and i'm kinda pissed off to admit the psychology that you mentioned. it really is a mindless game when you want it to be mindless, and intense when you want it to be intense. I really appreciate your input and content. It's unique in a over saturated area. Subscribed!
RuneScape is one of the only games out there that I feel can legitimately deliver on that notion of “a world where you can do whatever you want”. Many games try and claim this, but ultimately fail. Most open world games that tout “player freedom” are restricted down to only letting the player do whatever content the developers specifically crafted for them to engage with. And a lot of them end up adopting the same ideas as each other, which results in the things that you’re able to do, becoming the things that you already _can do_ in every other game. This is where RuneScape’s simplistic mechanics and “dull” gameplay turn into an advantage that it holds over those other games. Developers tend to focus on doing one thing extremely well - combat, story, etc. - and not much else. As a result, you could never have the breadth of content that RuneScape offers in those other games. You couldn’t have all of the 23 skills in a game like Elden Ring, or a game like Baldur’s Gate 3, or in any other game that was an open world / RPG. Because it would just require too much time and resources in order to match the level of choice offered by RuneScape in those other games. The basic point-and-click controls, the tile-based movement, the “dated graphics” - all of these aspects of the game that are _perceived_ as drawbacks, from an outside perspective, are the whole reason why were able to have a giant world where almost everything is interactive and beneficial to gameplay. You won’t get the same _amount_ of options in most other games that you can with RuneScape, and that’s what makes it different. That’s why it’s so special and why there’s nothing else like it.
I think the main reason games like this do well is because there's no artificial FOMO interjected into it the way WoW and FF do with gear treadmills. It's the same reason GW2 does well, the world feels more alive. It's more of a matter of experiencing the game, rather than rushing to a specific goal. I quit WoW and FF when I realized I just didn't care about getting to max level to do content that would largely be irrelevant a year down the line. It just felt temporary and fruitless.
Marstead covered the evergreen content and items very thoroughly in his video about why RuneScape is awesome. I won't link it because I don't want to be that kinda guy. But those are keywords if you feel inclined to search for it.
FF's gear treadmill is basically non existent, you can clear 99% of content with marketboard items, and getting BIS is guaranteed due to it's book/tome vendor system. Infact some people rant about how much they hate theres no gear to chase after in FF, but most of the time you are chasing Glamour (the look) and not stats (this is how I perfer it) WoW on the otherhand can be extremely gear treadmilly depending on expansion.
@@undercoverspy123I still prefer not to grind daily tomes in order to gear. Having a checklist of dailies is not my personal cup of tea. Sandbox is just my preference.
I came back to OSRS this year and I hadn't played since 2008. I feel part of this was because being older I understood the mechanics for games a lot more. Runelite is also a big part with the upgrades and help it gives. Back when I was a kid playing this I didn't have the patience but as an adult I do.
Just got back on the horse again for the first time since 2020. Actually following guides and trying to actually play the game properly for the first time in almost 20 years. I’m having a blast
Chore: daily/repeating things. Comfort: See numbers go up and choose the activities which you feel like doing. Lets be honest here, we already have a lot of chores and stuff we dont feel like doing. If MMO's think dailies are a good thing then they're mistaken.
It's simplicity combined with some truly INSANE mechanical skill at the highest level of the game. Go watch Xzacts 40 combat infernal cape if you think this game is just a braindead joke.
It is a braindead joke, you are just dealing with insane jank and claiming mechanical skill, this isn't a fighting game, this isn't a RTS, or a Moba ect. Raiding in FF14 and WoW even within the same MMO pockets are way more complex, although jagex's more recent combat related updates are trying to put the game up to par. As long as it's on this engine it's just manipulating tick, and dealing with really awful ui and inventory management.
@@undercoverspy123 isnt wow and ff14 just "avoid red circles and cry to your healer when you get hit" , maybe interact with something within 5 seconds or stand in a specific circle to spice it up. What part of those games requires multiple tick perfect inputs in a row or you die? Have you watched either of the content creators recommended above? Rendi's lvl 3 fire cape for example perfectly tick eats for like 20+ hours straight, and a single tick (0.6 seconds) missed in that time means he has to restart the entire process. He had to go rent an air BNB closer to Jagex servers just to reduce the chance that a tick is missed due to latency. What part of FF14 and WOW requires that level of precision where you need to physically move your computer to a new location to save like 2ms off your average latency because you need that insane precision?
Look theres no point in me explaining any of that, just go look at a TOP(the omega protocall) clear in ff14 and try and parse whats happening. Look I like osrs too but 99% of this game is lazy low effort clicking, and when it requires engagement it's just mark some tiles, manipulate tick, and maybe swap gear.
For those just starting out, for the graphics, there is a RuneScape HD style from 2009 that still carries the soul of OSRS without screwing it like RS3 does along with some additions, you can play OSRS with this style using the "HDOS" launcher.
You nailed everything about the mechanics, but don't forget the community. Runescape feels alive in a weird way other MMO's dont. Being able to just talk to other players or ask questions like you're there is so immersive for the game world. That classic yellow text that appears above your head as if your screaming in the streets in unbeatable. The ever changing economy acts as a real life representation with rich people, poor people, and everything inbetween. Just hanging with friends, talking to clan members, or making your character look cool. And the simple style/unique designs make items timeless and unforgettable unlike many other cookie cutter games.
First of all the devs, are not greedy, they listen to the community, the membership is not expensive, and you can buy bonds from the ge if you work harder in game, they update it constantly, honestly the developers are 10/10 compared to other games
I think a lot of similar reasons are why I still play an MMO that was released in 1999: EverQuest It's hard to get new players into because it looks dated, but it's the best MMO I've ever played, before, or since
3 answers to that question. 1) Nostalgia. Gen-Z has been through a lot (9/11, Wars, Pandemic, Recessions, etc). We crave an era that was not plagued with all these problems, when we were young and innocent. 2)No monetization/Devs that actually play the game (Very rare these days) 3) Highly addictive gameplay loop
Oldschool runescape is just soo good. I’ve been playing on and off since 2006 (7 years old) and I’m 25 now. My account is now finally progressing in a way that surpasses previous accounts and I’m having such a blast. Just purchased a 12 month membership aswell.
My take on it (being a designer) is that OSRS graphics and UI have a huge influence on the experience of guideless wandering around the game. The visuals are simple, colors well define and not complex, structures just well defined but not complex, it definetly helps players feel safe to walk around even without the game telling you what to do.
Same thing here, the whole school started playing RuneScape through miniclip. Just for them to ban it a year or so later, because the red hitsplats looked too much like blood 💀💀
I love how OSRS is not being played how it's supposed to be played. Like 1 ticking, prayer flicking, flinching... Nothing was made with those things in mind, originally. But they are basic game stuff right now, love it.

This has got to be one of the best MMORPG videos I've watched. It's terrifying being an old school MMO player sometimes who completely missed out on OSRS. From UO to Throne and Liberty it just...skipped me. I felt like I went on a journey of my own learning about OSRS with this vid. Excellent job Idyl.
This is part of the reason why I love ironmen so much is the micro goals cascading into major goals. I am playing a sorta soft snowflake account (taskman) where my main goal is determined by whatever a spreadsheet tells me to do. But I am not wholely limited to that really. I can take breaks, do whatever. Here is one I had recently 1. Current goal: get Mystic hat (light). From Basilisks. 2. Already have black mask so I have everything I need to kill Basilisks. Neat. 3. out of boredom check the banked xp plugin while killing Basilisks. Realize I have 55 crafting banked 4. Decide I want a Ring of Wealth. So take a break from Basilisks to train my crafting. 5. Have to smelt gold to get enough bars for the tiaras and jewelery. Thankfully have that banked thanks to a previous Motherload Mine grind. 6. 55 Crafting aquired - oh I used all my gold 7. Teleport to Lumbridge to go to al kharid mine to mine one gold. 8. Make the dragonstone ring in the Al Kharid furnace 9. "Oh look there is a fallen star outside of Al Kharid bank" Mine it. 10. Realize I dont have 68 magic (have 67) 11. Teleport to Falador to enchant my ring by boosting my level with a Wizard's Mind Bomb 12. Back to basilisks to get my drop that the Ring of Wealth doesn't even boost. But hey at least I dont need to manually pick up the coin drops! This is why I like playing an ironman.
I think because Runescape has such a charm to it that just flows through almost every part of it and even as the faces that have worked on the game have changed, they've IMO done a REALLY good job of keeping that charm, specifically with OSRS. RS3 is sort of a mess, but if RS3 didn't fuck up as hard as it did, we'd probably never have seen OSRS released and you'd have tons of people with nostalgia for the OG RS they played as kids. Also, I think I can sum up RS's original charm with these two following paragraphs. I remember I watched a documentary about how the game started and I'll always remember the story of how the brothers (Andrew, Paul and Ian) tackled making sounds for the game, the sound when you cook something (the sizzle) was actually their mom cooking bacon at home. Which to me there's just something so cool about how in the beginning, most sounds were just recorded around their house. That's passion and that bleeds in every aspect of the game. They brothers didn't care about being flashy, they just wanted to make a GOOD game and I think they not only made a GOOD game, they made a timeless game that we'll still be playing decades from now.
One aspect of OSRS that is a pillar of it's success is how engaged every player feels to the greater community. Whether you you're in a clan, sitting at GE, playing mini games, skilling, bossing, raiding or whatever you do, you'll always run into people. Some other MMOs aren't as engaging in that aspect. Some you can basically play the entire game with needing to engage in the community at all.
As a veteran of both original RS2 and now OSRS, I love the game because it's a single player MMO. As an Ironman especially, being able to do what I want when I want and have the rare items I get as drops or the skill benefits I grind for or even the achievements I unlock be something I can compare to friends or "show off" to other players is a big deal. If this was a true single player game, it would not have the same appeal. There's something about it being a hugely public game with a buzzing community, that DOESN'T require you to play as a group that is awesome.
Runescape is proof a game with "bad graphics" can still be successful, and as someone who grew up playing super nintendo, Nintendo 64, gamecube, that has always been true to me and many, many others. In fact, I've grown to believe that the better a game looks; the lower my expectation for it being any fun should be.
Old school roomscape is the most perfectly crafted interconnective web of systems I have ever seen. And I don't think it would have ever been possible with a more complex game.
I think the biggest two things about runescape are relatively self explanatory. 1. Is that its the only mmorpg that really lets you play at the pace and intensity you want, while also having constant updates and community feedback for all stages of progression so content never really becomes dead, making there be just an absurd amount of content overall, and 2. cosmetics being both limited and earnable is really satisfying. You actually know something about every player based on how theyre dressed, and it makes the game feel relatable
Most content creators out here hiding as much personal info as possible to protect themselves from weirdos and fraudsters, Meanwhile idyl; DID YOU WRITE DOWN MY BIRTHDAY YET
The graphics filtered me in 2001, even on school computers through a browser where my expectations were rock bottom. They really are hard to stomach so learning to love them is surely the first thing to learn before anything else.
Especially after watching, I think there are some similarities between Minecraft and RuneScape. Both drop you into a world with simple blocks and components without any initial goals or obvious progression path. Neither force you to do anything you don't want, but provide a context that's interesting enough for players to want to explore and expand on without much preempting. With modern MMOs, you might get sudden invisible walls, pointing quest arrows, a flat progression path with everything you need to do prepositioned for you to get it done without thinking. These things make playing easy, but removes player agency. I love planning "oh, i gotta get to this level so i can unlock this so i can complete this", and i love staring at the skill progression charts, thinking about what i could unlock, then making a plan and making it happen. In contrast to a game holding my hand and going "Oop we're going up the stairs now! Place your left foot here, and then your right foot here!"

It's almost like it's just a good game. And it's a very different game from what it was in 07, it is a mix between modern ideas and the best of what other games lost from that time. It's kind of like what shovel knight is in platformers. Oldschool graphics, still amazing gameplay, the old ideas meet the new.
I think the hardest part for players who didn't play it in the prime years, is the graphics and lack of hand holding that they are used to BUT when it clicks it clicks even now for new players ( their wouldn't be the numbers their are still today without new players constantly coming in)
I've played pretty much every MMO their is to play and nothing holds me in long enough and allows me to play with different amounts of attention and time, plus the charm and progression system that isn't based on fomo and constant power creep.
@@illuminated1158 To me personally it was that it felt like... Dead? Not an mmo? Not a single time throughout my try (f2p - lucky bryo kill - bond) i had to interact with other players, there is even no global chat.

The simplicity of the game has kept me playing since Classic. The game can be what ever you want it to be exciting, chill, you name it.
This right here. It can be as 0 to 100 as the player wants. With any percentage of difficulty in between as well. It is uncanny how "modular" the difficulty is for all sorts of players.

Afk? Only pathetic people do that
This. Plenty of goals to achieve, but all in your own pace, with a lot of people sharing in the journey.
Preach
It can also be mentally taxing if that's the type of content you want. For example, soloing Expert mode TOA or CM COX
I agree. It's like a chill for the mind and the dopamine hit of seeing xp and levels go up seems to just hit that ape part of the brain 😂

I got side tracked once like 8 months ago when I came back to osrs after a break. I told myself I would get elite void. Then I was like well bosses are cool so I should get hard CBAs to speed up this grind for void. Now I’ve done the inferno and I still don’t have elite void
That's a flex and a half. "one day i got side tracked and ended up killing inferno"
I firmly believe nostalgia has nothing to do with the games popularity. Its just the best mmo, hell even one of the best games around. The love and passion oozes off it
It's a shame that it's so damn grindy. It's like i want to play but then I do and I realize that the gameplay is literally just clicking the same shit for hours on end.

when something isn't made to look hyper real then the imagination fills in the gaps both story and visuals and gives you a better experience than real life even.
It’s unique that the game is about the journey, not the endgame that your supposed to rush to
I've played solely f2p since 2004.
That screenshot at 0:41 just hit me like a train of nostalgia. MAN.

Runescape captures the feeling of a DnD campaign better than any other game I've played.
The tile based system and the tick system also reflecting the "moment" of time that actions take, 10 actions in a minute, so each "turn" is 10 ticks
My life truly started and will/is ending with RuneScape. I used to run home from school off the bus to get 30 minutes of RuneScape in on my parents computer before they saw I was “gonna cause a virus”.

That’s why it’s so special and why there’s nothing else like it.
because it's fucking cool
After playing for 17 years I just found out that you can zoom on the mini map…. Really makes me curious what else I missed
Or really anything by Rendi
For those just starting out, for the graphics, there is a RuneScape HD style from 2009 that still carries the soul of OSRS without screwing it like RS3 does along with some additions, you can play OSRS with this style using the "HDOS" launcher.
its popular becasue all the kids who played it grew up and now we can afford our own computers

When I started playing I fully committed to being a lumberjack and I loved it.
Calling jebrim mentally ill, while accurate, is kind of messed up
First of all the devs, are not greedy, they listen to the community, the membership is not expensive, and you can buy bonds from the ge if you work harder in game, they update it constantly, honestly the developers are 10/10 compared to other games
I've been looking for a video to show some friends that encapsulates what playing runescape is like, and this is it ❤️
I think a lot of similar reasons are why I still play an MMO that was released in 1999: EverQuest
It's hard to get new players into because it looks dated, but it's the best MMO I've ever played, before, or since
3 answers to that question.
Oldschool has a strange addiction and it’s grasp is a strong one. You don’t quit OSRS only take breaks

Here is one I had recently
1. Current goal: get Mystic hat (light). From Basilisks.
2. Already have black mask so I have everything I need to kill Basilisks. Neat.
3. out of boredom check the banked xp plugin while killing Basilisks. Realize I have 55 crafting banked
4. Decide I want a Ring of Wealth. So take a break from Basilisks to train my crafting.
5. Have to smelt gold to get enough bars for the tiaras and jewelery. Thankfully have that banked thanks to a previous Motherload Mine grind.
6. 55 Crafting aquired - oh I used all my gold
7. Teleport to Lumbridge to go to al kharid mine to mine one gold.
8. Make the dragonstone ring in the Al Kharid furnace
9. "Oh look there is a fallen star outside of Al Kharid bank" Mine it.
10. Realize I dont have 68 magic (have 67)
11. Teleport to Falador to enchant my ring by boosting my level with a Wizard's Mind Bomb
They brothers didn't care about being flashy, they just wanted to make a GOOD game and I think they not only made a GOOD game, they made a timeless game that we'll still be playing decades from now.
main takeaway i got from this video - you love agility and zulrah. absolute mad lad
I will never stop playing Runescape
As a veteran of both original RS2 and now OSRS, I love the game because it's a single player MMO. As an Ironman especially, being able to do what I want when I want and have the rare items I get as drops or the skill benefits I grind for or even the achievements I unlock be something I can compare to friends or "show off" to other players is a big deal. If this was a true single player game, it would not have the same appeal. There's something about it being a hugely public game with a buzzing community, that DOESN'T require you to play as a group that is awesome.
You know it's a good video when the background music is from Pokémon Colosseum.
1. Is that its the only mmorpg that really lets you play at the pace and intensity you want, while also having constant updates and community feedback for all stages of progression so content never really becomes dead, making there be just an absurd amount of content overall, and
2. cosmetics being both limited and earnable is really satisfying. You actually know something about every player based on how theyre dressed, and it makes the game feel relatable
Most content creators out here hiding as much personal info as possible to protect themselves from weirdos and fraudsters,
Meanwhile idyl;
DID YOU WRITE DOWN MY BIRTHDAY YET
I love watching videos like this, very well done! It's wild how little it takes to make us happy lol
The graphics filtered me in 2001, even on school computers through a browser where my expectations were rock bottom. They really are hard to stomach so learning to love them is surely the first thing to learn before anything else.
The RuneScape music and sounds live in my head rent free
