      i tried forcing myself to play the c++ client exclusively. I lasted like 4 months and quit using it after months of a bug with selecting items wasn't fixed. There were small things like massive QoL plugins being unavailable of course, but something so core being bugged is unacceptable. If they couldnt fix something so simple, I concluded there will be worse things in the future. The high frame rate feels really smooth to play on so it's a huge shame. Perhaps it's bittersweet positive thing that they didn't acquire osbuddy

    the greatest thing about runelite is that you get to choose what you do and don't want to use. I think this is one of the biggest factors that has led to the widely loved self-driven experience that OSRS provides--whether it be to restrict yourself in ridiculous ways, give yourself waypoints to get you to the action faster, or make afking easier, every player has a different image of how they want to interact with the game and they can force the game to reflect that with the many options that runelite provides. And if runelite doesn't provide it by default, there's literally hundreds of additional community plugins you can install.

    • @hemmoau
      @hemmoau 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      100% I love being able to use menu entry swapper, which most traditionalists would call cheating, but don't want to ruin my experience with quest helper. Runelite lets you choose and since Runescape is basically singleplayer it's inconsequential.

    • @christophern5226
      @christophern5226 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      I mean, there’s no discussing “principles of the issues” if differing positions aren’t taken.
      As in, if people do discuss “the principles of the issues” they’d surely be taking a position on either side, right? Otherwise there would be no discussion. Just agreement.

    • @chriskim8022
      @chriskim8022 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@christophern5226 yes, that is called compromise in which both parties can win.
      Jagex's main interest was security concerns. They did not share this concern with the RuneLite dev, and merely maintained a hardline position of taking down RuneLite or lawsuit.
      Had Jagex shared their interest in preventing bot clients copying RuneLite's deobfuscation method, many more options would have been on the table that both parties could have pursued. Legal should be involved if negotiations fail, but it seems like legal was spearheading negotiations as seen in the black and white strategy they pursued.
      Because Jagex maintained a position of take down RuneLite or lawsuit, they received:
      1. Community backlash
      2. A proliferation of bot clients
      3. A shitty client that got quickly penetrated
      None of their interests were ever addressed.
      Had they shared their security concerns, RuneLite's deobfuscation method could've gone private. Proliferation of bot clients would've still happened with or without RuneLite's existence of course. But they wouldn't receive the backlash from the community.

    This whole story of jackmob, osbuddy and runelite is some of the wildest shit in the history of the games industry. Jagex's journey from the old mentality of "we need to control everything and ban anyone who uses 3rd party software" into first becoming a pioneer of player agency and player democracy, into embracing open source, plugins, and the community is just so interesting.

    • @SemFronteirass
      @SemFronteirass 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      the product team of oldschool runescape doesnt even play the game, they only say "we want x, y, z"
      after that event, I think jagex fired the product team and hired a btter one, after runelite and hdos being accepted, the updates and much more stuff were done based on what the community want.
      People arent satisfied even after they are doing a good job? Crazy!

It was one of the few non combat activities that required some form of skill.

      There's a reason why so many folks play RSPSs, it has nothing to do with clients. OSRS was dying due to a lack of content being added to the game and gained as many players as it has now due to said content being added regardless of how some feel about it. I'm sure there's a very small percentage of new players who haven't played in 07 or before who would refuse to play if they didn't have access to custom clients but they have no impact on the playerbase.

    I love Runelite but I do have a question as a developer- so with APIs usually there are secret keys that apps use to actually authenticate and access the public API. My question is this- Can Jagex implement something like this on the servers where they will only serve/login accounts that also pass the secret key to their game's API? That would make it so that only the official client would have access barring any leaks of the secret key they may use?

Remember that the are the ones that had rs2 killed in favor of rs3, they were the ones that wanted micro transactions, they didn't even knowingly have a working version of old school runescape saved, the only ones that saved osrs were the players, and the only thing that saved osrs is custom clients.

    the smartest thing runescape could have done is instead of telling the 3rd party client runelite they were to shut down, if instead they just pushed an update that broke 3rd party clients, maybe an overhaul to the encryption or "obfuscation", or simply an update to the login system, which breaks 3rd party clients from being able to connect to the runescape servers, especially the authentication/login servers. This will upset the playerbase, but if Jagex gave a good sounding reason (i.e. to better secure logins or patch a bug) even if it was BS, would have not blown up as much as this, and work in their favor as while 3rd parties would need to attempt to crack runescape all over again and figure out how to deobfuscate it, the playerbase will more likely migrate back to the official client, and that's when Jagex can push the game client overhaul and simultaneously push/enforce rules to ban all 3rd parties including OSBuddy

  • @InterestEPC
    @InterestEPC 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video, and while I understand why a certain other detail of de-obfuscation wasn't mentioned, it is worth pointing out that it also helps the private server scene a fair amount too. Jagex nuking third-party clients, even closed-source ones, makes even more sense in that context. They still should've been more transparent about it.

    20:02 "this would've been a great deal for jagex and the players" lol no it would not have and you know it. You know for a fact that jagex would have barred players from using it if they didn't have premier membership or some kind of added on subscription like they did with the backpack value thing in rs3 and they would not have bothered updating it or letting players update it for them because players having control is the 1 thing jagex hates more than they love making money.
