Mile Marker Mike: I had my gopro 7 (2 each) and go pro 8 for a couple of years. I've ridden on some 100 degree days and from time to time my gopro felt very hot. I put my gopro in the Ulanzi housing so my gopro external plug in goes into the convenient chamber below. Before I had the camera cycle off and the camera felt alittle hot. Ever since I removed the battery and went to an external source I no longer get overheat issue while recording in hot temperatures. Hence the battery removed removes the heat source from the go pro. One more plus removing the internal battery and going to an external source.
Hey, that's awesome to know. I had not thought about that. We run with the batteries in so that if the cord get's yanked, we don't lose footage. But this is a great idea for when heat is an issue.
Great vid. I had a similar set up for my 11 on my Himalayan trip. The only difference was I used a longer helmet lead of 30cm. This meant the connection hung off the back of the helmet making it easier to connect the two leads when putting my helmet on. I superglued a couple of small rubber pips in to each side of the usb connection to make it easier to line up the connection.
I’ve moved on now by creating a battery mounting plate from a GoPro bracket which clips to the back of the helmet. So much easier to have all day power plus it balances the weight of the camera
So do you need the gopro battery in the gopro while having the external plugged in? If so, does it still overheat? Have you done this with a Hero 10? Thanks for the video.
This is great info! got a hero 8 that im going to use to record my next marathon in full so definitely important info on what kind of gear to get for it
Nice video, lots of useful info. The cams don’t actually create continuous files longer than about 4Gb. GoPro calls it chaptering. Video files are broken into pieces every time the recording is stopped, or when a single file hits about 4Gb in size. They report that this by design and limits content loss in the event of a jolt, or similar, that stops recording. It does make manually backing up and editing footage back together more work. It’s easier to auto-backup directly to the cloud where it indexes them as continuous files that you can download to a workstation as one-piece. You mention one of the quirks when using a battery pack. I say one of them because there are others. I have the media mod in order to access the USB-C port and I run the cam at 4k/60 fps to capture my son’s travel baseball games. If I leave a battery in the cam when using an external battery, the cam will stop recording after a short time, or shut down completely. Initially, I thought it would be a good idea to leave a battery in the cam in case of a battery pack failure. It took a while to figure this out. It does not seem like you have the same issue, or an overheating issue like some do. You likely have decent airflow due to all of the movement and it looks like you use an anodized aluminum thumbscrew on the mount which acts like a heatsink.
I don't mind the files being broken up, but I don't care for the naming convention they use. Regarding the camera freezing etc the battery in, it varies by model. I've found the hero 10 is actually the most stable on external power. The 9 is ok with the workaround I describe in the video. The 8 is hit or miss.
You're running into issues with external power because all power banks have an auto-off feature when the load is low, i.e. when the Gopro disconnects from power accidentally. You can force the power bank to always stay on even when it is disconnected from what it is charging with a 'keep power bank alive' mod. This will allow quick capture to work all the time with external power because the GoPro will always be powered.
Thanks! So much valuable info there. I've had GoPro replace my Hero 9 twice because it stops recording shortly after starting up with an external battery pack as you describe at 9:40.

Great info. Thanks. I've got a H7 that I mostly use on top of helmet for adventure bike riding and enduro riding provided no low branches. I bought a Dango chin mount but, lost it once in an enduro and, it bumps on my neck brace or GPS on the bars. So, I'm considering buying a H11 Mini to put under helmet peak. Perhaps with external power too. Smaller camera under peak with higher POV but no bumping. Like your chin mounts. But, Dango issues aside, I don't want a specific mount for each of 4 different enduro or adv helmets. After 12 years of top, side and chin mounts, under peak next. (Chest POV too low)
My last longest ride was from California to Alabama. I do use an external battery. I also use looping. That way I am only saving anything interesting that comes up.
Thanks for the great video. Very informative. My GoPro 8 has been problematic out of the box, mostly due to the management of an external power supply that I have to use in order to capture a run in its entirety. Hey, the fact that you had to spend so much time in the video explaining the GoPro power quirks (and it was necessary) is maddening really! I can't believe GoPro haven't come up with a better, more reliable system. It's always a crap shoot as to whether or not I've captured any footage. Hey the GoPro takes some great footage but if it's not on, we'll then…
Yeah, it's a bit of a mystery. We've had much better luck with the hero 10 as regards using external power. I wouldn't typically recommend upgrading, it's pretty similar overall. But if you're still on the 8 and having issues, might be something to think about.

Great question. We don't actually leave it open. We use something called the media mod that GoPro makes. gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/camera-media-mod/ADFMD-001.html
Thank you for the video. I'm thinking of buying a GoPro 9 as a streaming camera. I suppose that the camera could do streaming while running from external power, right? Also, what specs needs the powerbank USB out port require to power the camera? I mean, what voltage and amperage the camera needs. Thank you!
all these videos you guys making - are these exposed cables setups waterproof? or you dont ride/record in rain? how do you deal with that, man. great video... but lol. i have to ask. they are way smaller battery chargers, why such a huge one. and there are chargers via usb-c on market. was this video done before they existed or ?
We ride in California where it so very rarely rains it's not an issue. These set ups are not waterproof. Occasional light rain hasn't been an issue for us yet. There's a specific reason for the cable types we use for our riding. But, we suggest everyone tweak things to fit their personal needs, goals, and riding styles. For example, we run a very large battery pack so we can record two straight days of long riding. If you just want a couple hours, you could get away with a lot less.
went on a elk hunt and wanted to do this to film as much as possible. when i would plug into the battery bank my GP would turn on an when i would hit record it would start to record then stop and go to main screen. My question is does the battery bank have to be a certain output voltage. Does/has anyone else have this issue. please help
What ear bud setup do you run? Are they plugged into the Sena mount or a Media Mod adapter. I run ear plugs to block the bike noise and turn the Sena up all the way. Maybe ear buds would be better. Does it take long to get everything plugged in and your helmet on? It might make a good video.
So LS2 has different names for their European helmets than they do for their US helmets. I believe the MX436 is the same as the Blaze which we do have a mount for. Here is the link to our website. wannabes.life/products/chin-mount-for-ls2-blaze-helmets
Hello, Can you please guide me which external power bank should I buy to get 4-5 hours of 4k60fps footage and 1080p 60fps footage..... 60fps is necessary?? PPLLLLEASSEE tell me for gopro 10 black!
Question, please: Should I keep the battery in the gopro while it's plugged into external power? Will that keep it safer if the plug gets yanked? Or will it not charge from external while the battery is inside and recording?
We like to keep the battery inside. It will work both ways, but without a battery, if the plug is ever pulled out accidently, your camera stops dead. With a battery, it will continue to record as long as the battery lasts.
We're on Southern California where rain is rare. However, I believe it would work in at least some rain as long as you keep the battery in a dry pocket. The media mod on the gopro makes it not really waterproof, but it should be ok as long as it's not submerged. But test carefully I guess as I don't have much experience here
Great video thanks! I assume you can get 1 hour of recording on a battery IF you don't use a remote (wifi) or voice commands because with either of those I get about 15 minutes. I have two questions - have you tried a magnetic pivoting USB connection? Also my Hero 10 black overheats and shuts down due to excessive heat when on a battery pack without a battery. Have you experienced this and if so any thoughts on how to prevent it?
We get around an hour on battery shooting 4k, voice off, Wi-Fi enabled but not actively connected to anything. We’ve only ever had a camera overheat when shooting still in direct sun or indoors in an unconditioned room. Trail riding has never been a problem for us even in 95 degree weather.
Looking at buying an 8 or 9 but can't decide. 9 has the longer lasting battery and front screen, but 8 seems more stable and less buggy from what I hear. Have the 9 issues been addressed? What to do?
The 9 is more stable than the 8 and you cannot change lenses on the 8. So I'd strongly recommend the 9. No real need to go for the 10. It gets hot too quickly.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes Can you explain this more please? Different go pros are different. Some don't have screens right? Can I check myself using a mirror?
If they don't have a front screen, it's a little harder you tell. But so far as I know, all GoPros have an inductor light that tells you if it's recording. On the hero 10, there's a front screen that's easy to check in the mirror. That screen will go to sleep after a couple of minutes, but there is a red LED above the screen that blinks when the camera is recording. So you can easily check that in a mirror too.
You could use your cellphone in selfie camera mode. My Hero 9 has a red LED recording indicator light on the front. That light can be enabled/disabled in its menu.
Thanks for that I've started using an 8 on my bike and I'm using a powerbank. If I upload to the gopro cloud it seems to split the big files up into smaller segments. But if I just transfer direct to a PC the files remain huge. Is that right,?
I have not used the cloud feature, but I expect the files are the same I'm both cases. GoPro breaks up files into about 4gig segments, basically a few mins each. This is to avoid a huge loss of data if the camera gets shutdown accidently I think (may also be a file structure limitation for backwards compatibility). I know that GoPro has a rather annoying naming convention for files too, which makes figuring out which clip came next in time a real pain while editing.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes thanks for that. I’ve got a file on my computer that’s over 1 hour long and I just can’t get it going. Maybe there was a glitch when it was transferring. Anyway, I shall investigate. Cheers and thanks.
how could you record with the gopro for long time without it get overheated ?? usually gopro shutdown in about 25 minutes due to overheat when you shoot in 4k
Never had that issue except when we're inside in a hot room with no airflow. On the bike, we've never had a camera overheat, even in the middle of summer.
Don't work for my 9. If I use an external battery pack it won't draw from the battery pack even when the GoPro battery is dead. I need to plug in the battery pack, start recording, then pull out the GoPro battery, kinda sucks because I can't use the media mod. I do a lot of night lapse videos.
I've tried a few different lengths. At first we used short runs, 3 feet or less, to avoid it getting tangled. However, I'm currently using a longer cord so that it doesn't tighten up when I turn my head or move around. I tuck any extra into the backpack with the battery bank.
I found that, if the internal battery is in, the external power supply will not charge the internal battery. It runs on the internal battery until the internal battery goes dead and then the unit power is off. Then it will start charging the internal battery from the external power supply. It doesn't look like you're having this problem. Is that correct? I tried it today without the internal battery and the media mod didn't work.
We use an internal battery as backup in case the cable comes unplugged. But in my experience, it'll both run the camera and slowly charge the battery (or at least prevent the battery running down). I've run the camera for 4 to 5 hours straight without turning it off.

Where should i use my mic adapter for my microphone please. Please help thx.
We film in 4k. The GoPro does an annoying thing where it breaks files into approximately 10 min chunks. I believe they're around 3.5 gigs each. A long ride can produce like 100 gigs of footage.

With the battery inside, how does it not overheat? I am using Hero9 on a bicycle. It works great for an hour then it shuts down, won't reconnect to external, needs to be restarted, gets angry, etc.
We've only ever had a GoPro overheat when we're sitting still (like shooting in the garage). For reference, we shoot at 4k. For the restarting issues, have you updated the firmware? In my experience, the hero 9 is the most troublesome. The 8 and 10 have been pretty stable.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes I am using a 7 black and 9. I will keep experimenting. I have switched down to 1080p 60 for my next test. I have a 10 hour ride in CO that I don't want to screw up. It is not until August so I have time to tweak my setup. Great products, videos, community, etc. Thanks.
My Hero 9 is facing rearward on my bicycle, behind my seat. So it doesn't get a breeze to help cool it. On some really hot days it has overheated after many hours when I'm pedalling slowly through the neighborhood to my house. It has their updated firmware, which helped. I use a black foam cover on it to reduce wind noise. No Media Mod. I'm thinking of making a light colored cover somehow. It would need to be breathable to avoid retaining the camera's heat. My front-facing Hero 10 doesn't overheat. Also no MediaMod or case on the Hero 10. Also powered by external battery (with internal battery installed).
Thanks for trying to help. My 9 seems to be a POS. It doesn’t do anything beyond its basic operation of recording short videos when using only the internal battery. I had been using as a webcam and to record some stuff using OBS. It just doesn’t do anything anymore. Maybe I own a dud. Maybe I’m an idiot. Oh well. It is not my destiny to make long distance bicycle videos.
@@david.vandergoesI've found that various electronic devices over the years that were acting particularly strangely or poorly suffered from poor power. Replacing a power supply or battery or USB power cable has sometimes fully cured what ailed it. Other times, even when battery contacts look clean and bright, the application of a miniscule amount of Caig DeoxIT has worked wonders. Odds are slim, but maybe a known good battery or DeoxIT, followed by a factory reset, could help your Hero 9. I prefer the Caig DeoxIT 25 ml red with needle applicator over the spray, so I can easily get it just where I want it. That's a lifetime supply.
Hi, just bought a GoPro10. Works fine with external battery. Now, I bought a Media Mod and inserted my GoPro10. The battery drains though it was connected to an external source. Any idea how to fix this? I tried removing battery to get direct power from the source (which is possible without the media mod) but it did not work as well. Any idea? Will try to update firmware later. Btw, I had to reset and remove latest firmware due to overheating issue. Latest firmware causes the overheat. Kindly lost at the moment. Keeping my fingers cross if the firmware update will fix it.
That's a new problem that I have not heard about yet. I run the latest firmware, so perhaps that helps. We use batteries inside our GoPros and do use the media mod. Perhaps there is a problem with your mod. You can check if the camera is charging when you plug the USB cable into the mod. Look before you start recording.

I found good one on Amazon but it was ages ago
My 4 wheeler has a 12v plug in so I can charge my phone, gopro etc...but my issue is I do mud and water riding so I can't always use it. Also now I gotta get either a different door for the USB C access port or the mod
Running an open door or the media mod will mean the GoPro isn't water proof. We've had no problems in light rain, but it is something to consider.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes yeah I think I'm gonna just run it till it dies. Charge it up to record again, and then just clip my videos. I usually ride for a few hrs if not more.
You can also run the charging setup, but to a battery charger and not to the camera. Then you'll always be charging a battery in your bag to swap out.
do you use the batt of the gp while it's on the pwoerbank or u can remove the batt while on ? thanks guys!
I ran a power pack to my go pro and it left a red light of death ,now distroyed 2 go pro doing this as well
Great video thanks for mentioning the weird recording bugs. Seems like go pro has always had similar issues with every generation
Yeah, they come and go with firmware updates too 😫
Very cool. Question. How do you protect the camera from the elements (dirt, dust, water) with the cover open to access the charging port?
An important factor you forgot to mention is...Hero 4 and older can only
be plugged into a 1.0 AMP port to charge or use for external power.
I started life on a hero 5, so really appreciate the extra insight.
Hi, i was wondering where you get that short JSAUX cable from, i can't find one on Amazon or on the company website. Its only, what, 6" maybe 8" long
It's about 6 inches. There are many brands. Look on Amazon for a USB c male to USB a female adaptor
went on a elk hunt and wanted to do this to film as much as possible. when i would plug into the battery bank my GP would turn on an when i would hit record it would start to record then stop and go to main screen.
Use earbuds that fit your ears well. We plug them into a splitter from the Sena. It does not take long to get your helmet on/off at all.
We have a whole video on the set up: th-cam.com/video/BvH92dSt96A/w-d-xo.html
LS2 MX436 PIONEER EVO chin mount is not on the website😢
So LS2 has different names for their European helmets than they do for their US helmets. I believe the MX436 is the same as the Blaze which we do have a mount for. Here is the link to our website.

Hello,
Can you please guide me which external power bank should I buy to get 4-5 hours of 4k60fps footage and 1080p 60fps footage.....
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes perfect!
Does it hold under heavy rain? Not a few drops. Sometimes it rains all week 24/7.
We're on Southern California where rain is rare. However, I believe it would work in at least some rain as long as you keep the battery in a dry pocket. The media mod on the gopro makes it not really waterproof, but it should be ok as long as it's not submerged. But test carefully I guess as I don't have much experience here
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes Thanks
Does it record with external mic while charging through power bank simultaneously ??
Yes, using the media mod is best, but the mic adaptor can also handle both connections.
Thank you so much for asking this man
Great run down! Looking so professional!
Thanks! 🫂
Awesome Video
What's the best way to control the camera so that you're sure it's off or on and you don't have to constantly ask something " is it on "?
Run it all day without turning it off. That's what we usually aim for. Also, ask if it's on, it's better than being wrong and missing footage.
If no one's there to ask, you could use your cellphone in selfie mode.
It gets hot too quickly.
big help men ♥♥ love from philippines
Great info in here, I appreciate that. Thank you!
You're very welcome, glad it helped!
I have a batterypack with solar panel and a hand turn generator.
what setting of the video you use?
Usually 4k 24 frames per second
How can you/others check its recording when running on external battery?
You can tell from the front screen if the camera is recording actively. We buddy check each other periodically just to be sure.
Can u use the Powerbank when use are using the gopro
Yup, that's the whole point. The GoPro will run off of the power bank if you follow our setup in this video.
Fantastic Video

Can the GoPro 10 take a 1Tb card?
Haven’t tried. We mostly run 256 and 512 cards
You might try a firmware update. Sounds like something isn’t working right.
well done info...no fluff, all facts...good ideas...
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
What external battery brand did you get.
We use whatever we find on Amazon.
Is the constant connection to an external battery healthy for the GoPro and or GoPro battery itself? I wonder??
No idea why it would hurt it. We've been running like this for a long time with no issues.
How long is the cable that plugs into the camera? I'm definitely doing this setup.
I've tried a few different lengths. At first we used short runs, 3 feet or less, to avoid it getting tangled. However, I'm currently using a longer cord so that it doesn't tighten up when I turn my head or move around. I tuck any extra into the backpack with the battery bank.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes thanks for the quick reply. How long is the one on the helmet?
6 inches maybe. If you mean the adaptor I stuck on?
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes yeah that the one. Thanks for the help.
One more question. Have you had any issues with the media mod? Trying to decide between it or the mic adapter for the hero 8.
What do you need to do to run the hero 11 off an external battery?
The hero 11 seems to charge just fine with a regular usbc cable and a power bank
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes I don't know what the deal is with mine. I'll try again.
Might try a firmware update. They're picky cameras. Our 9 is starting to go bad and has odd issues sometimes.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBesHello pllllleeeeaassee tell me which external power bank should I buy to record for like 4-5 hours non stop like you do... Please give me some names (trusted)!!!!!
I have a question i have gopro8 and i am using a power bank which my battery would last me for a longtime, but i use the slot for the power bank but i cant use that slot for my pro 3.5 mm mic adapter because the slot is taken already by the power bank. Where should i use my mic adapter for my microphone please. Please help thx.
The mic adaptor has a 3.5 audio in port and a USB C port so you can attach a mic and power.
so on that ten hour ride, what file size did you create and at what settings?
We film in 4k. The GoPro does an annoying thing where it breaks files into approximately 10 min chunks. I believe they're around 3.5 gigs each. A long ride can produce like 100 gigs of footage.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes I just bought a 10 and I’m planning on using it to record a full days work in an excavator. Trying to figure out the best storage/power solutions. Your video and your reply to my comment are a big help.
Awesome, glad we can help. We run 512gb cards just to be sure. Also, get a name brand card, and make sure it's the highest transfer speed available.
Something like this - SAMSUNG EVO Select Micro SD Memory Card with Adapter, 512GB microSDXC UHS-I U3 100MB/s Full HD & 4K UHD for Photos, Videos, Music Storage, MB-ME512HA www.amazon.com/dp/B0887CHVFF/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_3KPP35HPY4A2JNGXR83S
Do you have any overheating issues while in the media mod?
No. The hero 10 can get hot if you use it when there's no airflow (like filming in our studio). But on the trail we've never had any issues.
@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes thanks. I looked on your website for the chin mount for a LS2 Gate helmet. Shot y’all an email. Would really like to copy your set up for trail riding on the raptor!!
We haven't done that helmet just yet. We'll add it to our build list for sure!
Rock solid review. I have the Airoh Six days Portugal limited edition and would love to try your set up on my YT channel. I will reach and for more to see if you guys can help level up my game. Thanks a lot. WADZ
They have a nine hour GoPro battery that fits around the GoPro 9 10 11 GoPros
Super heavy though

my gopro 8 when I connect external battery and press record. stop charging. what will be the problem?
Not sure, that's a new problem.

2:48 You can charge your devices via solar at night??? Incredible
No, you can charge from a battery at night and charge the battery bank from solar during the day. This is a camping setup that set use often.
Good, excellent

@@ExtremeSportsWannaBes Thank you for responding. I had updated firmware again yesterday (though I know it may re-trigger the freezing issue). It did not fix it. I saw a suggestion to manually update firmware. Will also check with GoPro Suport. I appreciate the response. :)
Sorry we weren't able to get you a better answer. Let us know what you find out.
I contacted support. They insisted that Media Mods type C is designed for data trasfer and not charging. Bummer. It was obviously a hardware issue.
That's a shame. We charge from that port all the time and it works great normally.
I didn't need the loud music!
