    Good tips. All in the category of "Don't use the camera as advertised." My camera overheats using "Award-winning HyperSmooth 5.0 video stabilization for buttery 5.3k video". My use cases require me to start recording, ...then let run until the end of the activity. That does not happen anymore. It did happen with my GoPro 9 at max res. and max stabilization. I record at 30 or 24fps, use fast cards, GPS and displays off. I applaud you for finding workarounds to deal with the flaws of this camera. But, that is what they are - flaws.

    I learnt the hard way on recording footage. I always used to film long sections when say, mounted on my mountain bike. It took ages to edit and find footage I wanted. I now film 10 to 20 second clips which removes the headache of editing long clips. Thanks for all your tips, I didn't realise when using GoPro indoors, to turn off stabilisation and reducing the frame rate. Excellent work mate! 🙂

  • @blackmamba6938
    @blackmamba6938 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    In my opinion you should always shoot in 60 fps. There might be some action that happens that you wish you could slow down, but because you shot in 24 or 30, it isn't possible. Shooting at 60 fps gives you flexibility with your footage. The exception that I'll give is if you're just talking to the camera. Then it's very unlikely you'll want to slow down the footage so 24 or 30 is fine. But any type of action, you should be shooting at 60 fps.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to agree. I only shoot in 24 fps if I’m talking to the camera and know I won’t want to slow that portion down later. Everything else I usually do 5.3K 60 or 4K 120.

    • @NickandAnna
      @NickandAnna 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is exactly my thinking. The only reason you'd shoot in 30 or 24 is if the camera is stationary and you're just talking to it in a low motion room situation. But at that point, why bother changing the settings on your camera every time you go to shoot?

    • @blackmamba6938
      @blackmamba6938 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@NickandAnna The other scenario where you should shoot at a lower framerate that i forgot to mention is if it's night time. You should shoot at a lower frame rate to gather more light.

    Thanks very much for your videos. I use my GoPro 10 for fly fishing videos and the Hind Sight feature works perfectly for being able to catch the action. The obvious downside is that I have to have the camera on and filming in the background. Do you have any suggestions on effectively using Hind Sight ? I was also wondering if changing batteries more frequently would have any positive impact on keeping the camera temp down? I usually film in 4K and 60 fps. Thanks very much. Keep up the good work !

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you and great question. When using Hind Sight I do recommend having the GoPro connected to a power bank and if possible having the battery removed from the camera while it is connected. Of course making sure there isn’t a chance of the camera getting too wet since the USB pass thru door makes it no longer waterproof. If you can mount your GoPro in a place where it can capture a good view of any possible catches while fishing this also helps. That way when you hit record it will for sure capture what you want it to.
      I think having the battery out of the camera fully and powering it via a good power bank may have the biggest impact on keeping it cool for your use case.
      Thanks!

    Thanks for the good advice, It was 27C out here and I had the Hero 9 running as a dash cam and my air co is broken, so it shutdown after 20 minutes or so, with a message I couldn't read fast enough. I assume it was a thermal overheat, as I was trying it on UHD 30 fps. What it recorded looks very good, but alas, It didn't make the road home. Just playing with it, filming what I encounter on the road (and that's a lot of misery), so we go again next week at 1080, maybe 60 or 30 fps.

    @kelalamusic9258 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Excellent video. I agree with you 100% on all 5 points. Especially shooting shorter clips and bringing the frame rate down. 30fps is the highest you will need in most situations, unless you want to shoot a short clip for slow motion affects. One other point, if I may add, is use a metal cage. This will act as a heat sink for the camera and draw a lot of the heat from the cam. Again, excellent video. ALL Gopro users should watch this, as over heating is a hot topic (excuse the pun) for many users.

      I tried 30 fps and it looks horrible. Not usable IMO. When panning, the picture becomes very jerky. I went back to 60 fpm, and what a difference.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is likely due to the shutter speed. If the shutter speed gets too low due to a lack of sufficient lighting this will create a jittery appearance to the footage due to Hypersmooth not being able to function properly at this shutter speed due to more motion blur. Setting your fps to 60 like you did would resolve this by forcing the shutter speed to be faster and giving Hypersmooth more crisp, sharp frames to work with. Glad you’re all set.

      @@GreatDayForAHike Thanks. BTW love your videos. Actually it was a very bright sunny day, so just the opposite. I wish I could show you how bad it was. It must be some kind of glitch with the settings I had. Like you said I found the settings that give me an outstanding picture quality - 4K/60p, 10-bit color and Linear+Lock, flat. The 200Mbps also helped a lot. I like to record entire long walks, so the overheating is a problem. I'm about to go out on a walk and test out the new settings. BTW, I used a Hero 2 and 3 to record all these videos (the cockpit scenes) about ten years ago. I wish I had the -11 back then: www.youtube.com/@CockpitScenes/videos

      So if you have the iPhone 15 Pro or Max with the ability to film in Pro Res and grade the footage later on you can get really good results from the iPhone 15 camera. The iPhone may work better in that type of inside/low light environment too even without Pro Res. The GoPro as an action camera shines while being used for action and outdoors in good lighting. Its strength is not indoor or low light filming.

    Damn, I just bought a Hero 9 and a Hero 8, with the sole purpose of using them as dash cameras on the front and back, for long bike rides. Any idea how long you may get out of it running it at 1080p 30fps but with hypersmooth running before it overheats?
    This would be in the UK which is generally quite cold and of course you would have air flowing on it whilst cycling. (Average temp is about 25c in summer here). I'm thinking instead of using spare batteries connecting it to a power bank may also help.
    Also wasn't sure if needed to go to 60fps on 1080p as the idea would be to be able to read number plates of cars if needed.

    i ended up here for a similar but different problem im gonna leave a note for others:
    Hero 8 and allegedly 9 too can work as a webcam without a battery. If it's overheating as a webcam, take out the battery and run a USB-C cable through the appropriate port (doesnt require the Media Mod but works with that too). In my case I had to try it like 4 times before it actually worked, I even tried a different cable that didnt work then went back to the original tried again and it worked. Just keep trying.
    Also allegedly some USB-C cables are power charging only and do not have the Data connection pins they typically have. Won't work with power-only, find one that definitely does Data connections too. If you can use it to transfer files then it has data pins, clearly.

      Great questions. Using a power bank should decrease the likelihood of overheating. Having it connected via the app could increase the risk a bit due to this requiring a wireless connection to the camera. If your camera is stationary and not moving you can turn Hypersmooth off. This will help decrease the amount of heat generated. The Media Mod does hold in some extra heat. If it's warm inside, a small fan blowing on your GoPro could also be helpful.

      Great question. If you’re using the GoPro indoors in an air conditioned building or with fans hitting the camera, it will likely be okay. However, if the camera is sitting stationary on a tripod make sure to turn Hypersmooth off. This will further help with cooling. In addition if you have the GoPro connected to a power cable you could keep the battery door open/remove the battery to further dissipate heat.
      2.7K 60 should rarely create any overheating issues. Unless you need the 60 fps you could do 2.7K 30 or 24.

I use GoPro genuine batteries and the SanDisk Extreme MicroSD cards as recommended and it works great.
      The only action camera I have ever had overheat on me during use was the DJI Action 2. Eventually DJI released a case that helped disperse the heat but until they did that one overheated a lot.

    Just bought a gopro and never knew the heating issue was even a thing for these cameras until my first use and realized how extremely hot it got.
    After feeling the heat, it's no wonder why people complain about battery life and what not.
    Extreme temperatures aren't ideal for these types of battery's.
    And I must say I'm pretty disappointed.
    Take away the super stabilization and this thing doesn't do anything my note 20 ultra doesn't do. And my phone doesn't even get hardly warm let alone hot. Even when doing the most cumbersome recording conditions.
    And i wasn't even using the gopro in 4k !
    I was using 1080p, 30fps and that thing was still cooking in less than 5 minutes. !
    This isn't a user problem, this is a development or manufacturing problem.
    I get there are things that can be done to mitigate temperature issues on our end.
    But it's not like we consumers are buying a car and red lining the rpms every chance we get.
    We are talking about cameras that cost a fair amount of money that barely scratch the surface of the computing power our cell phones do on a daily basis with no issues.
    So for gopro not to fix these issues would imply they expect us to not use or limit certain capabilities unless absolutely nessasary for the sake of performance is b.s.
    Don't advertise 4k ultra stabilization 60fps when the garbage is heating up with no stabilization at 1080p 30fps.

      Was your GoPro still working and not powering off? Small action cameras cranking out high quality footage with a higher bitrate do produce a lot of heat. The heat is normal. Getting so hot that the camera overheats and turns off is not normal. Every action camera I have owned from all different brands gets hot with continuous use. I’ve only had one that overheats so badly while I use it that it powers off and that was the DJI Action 2. Overheating was such a widespread issue on that camera that DJI released a magnetic caae to dissipate the heat and added this statement to their website for the Action 2:
      “When recording 4K/120fps, Action 2 will stop filming when the set Auto-Stop Rec Temp is reached. If set as Standard, 4K/120fps video can be recorded for around 3 minutes. If set to High, 4K/120fps video can be recorded for around 5 minutes. Using the DJI Action 2 Magnetic Protective Case helps reduce surface temperature to optimize video recording by increasing recording length under normal conditions. In countries and regions that support setting Auto-Stop Rec Temp as High, the recording time is about 10 minutes in an indoor environment of 25 °C with the protective case mounted.”

      Funny you say that though because DJI action cameras are the only ones I have ever had actually overheat to the point of powering off while I using them 😂 The DJI Action 2 did it after about 4 minutes for me which was quite bad. So bad and widespread that DJI had to release a statement on this and released a supplemental metal cage.
      The reality is pretty much any camera can overheat to the point of powering off, including high-end mirrorless and DSLR cameras, but most will not if they are used in the manner that the camera was designed to be used.

      Unfortunately, the trade off with the Action 3 seems to be a lower bitrate. From my perspective the footage from the Action 2 looked better.

    Someone explain to me how these cameras can't run for more than 40 mins without overheating, yet a dashcam can run for hours under the heat of a windscreen and never shut off?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      These are capable of recording much higher quality footage than a dashcam. Higher resolution/frames per second combinations and higher bitrate. This generates much more heat during the process of the internal chip processing this footage and the footage being written to a microSD card.

    Makes no sense lowering resolution. Doing short clips. Reducing fps, hypersmooth. Camera is basically in enclosed case. Its like a pc case with no fans and of course all heat is trap inside. We need better cooling solutions and not some mumbo jumbo.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, cameras that film high-quality footage get hot. With less surface area to dissipate heat than a DSLR or mirrorless camera this can be an even more challenging issue for R&D at GoPro and other competitors to figure out. Gains have been made with each new generation of camera.

    You wanna see overheating? Use it for fishing videos. 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️😂 Non stop continuous recording for hours at a time because you never know when the bite is coming. I’ve been so disappointed with my GoPro 10. Can’t depend on it at all. Even just talking vids done inside thing over heats after 10 minutes. It’s really frustrating. The Hero 8 has been way more reliable for us, only issue is sometimes I’ll get 1 or 2 corrupt unusable files that can potentially be the most important shot of a video.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the non-stop recording have you turned off Hypersmooth? If you have the GoPro mounted turning off Hypersmooth can help a lot with the camera operating cooler.
      For your MicroSD cards are you using SanDisk Extreme cards or one of the other cards that GoPro recommends?
      Thinking through those as a few things that may help, if you’re not already doing these of course.

    • @WhereWeWild
      @WhereWeWild ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreatDayForAHike I don’t think I’ve turned hypersmooth completely off, but I’ve definitely had it on one of the lower settings for the still camera, will have to try that thanks. And yeah all I use are SanDisk Extremes. Crazy idk what causes the corrupt files to happen, for the most part everything is usually ok, but every now and then there will be 1 or 2 important files on a card that just aren’t usable. Hurts man, haha especially if it’s a really important moment. Can’t find a way to repair them either, and I always reformat the cards before each trip. Some days we are out there in 100 degree summer heat for hours and hours, sometimes in looping mode, it’s really hard on these cameras. The batteries swell and get stuck inside, pull tabs break off, the plastic covers on the batteries get all bunched up and peel off from the heat… but even when it’s not that harsh outside if the battery gets too low the screen starts glitching out and I need to restart, and I feel like that’s when these corrupt files happen along with the over heating. I’m just not sure though. I’m to the point now where I run them with external battery packs with the doors completely off to try and keep the heat down 😂 The Hero 10 though is on another level as far as over heating goes. Even inside like I said, air on, 5-10 minutes and it gives up. The 8s have been workhorses for us and only have done that after a couple hours in pure 100 degree sun. However they have been responsible for the sometimes corrupt files though, haven’t used the 10 as much yet because of how it’s acted in more gentle environments. I understand it’s very tough on these cameras to keep them running for so long, just sucks when you can’t count on them, and really sucks when the newer more expensive model you bought performs worse. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

      With the hindsight feature on the newer GoPro cameras this is a nice replacement for long videos as this will capture any wanted highlights without needing to do a single, long clip.
      From my perspective, if millions own a GoPro and only thousands record long videos I would consider this rarely, or a small percentage. GoPro has provided data on the frequency of their customers doing several, short clips or single, longer videos and their published data shows most do numerous, shorter clips when using a GoPro.

      There are lots of cameras that can overheat to the point of powering off, including many more costly DSLR and mirrorless cameras. I personally like it that camera creators are pushing the boundaries of what is possible, especially such high-quality footage in such a tiny form factor. I realize not everyone feels this same way as I do and I get that. I’ve not ever had any of my GoPro action cameras overheat on me while using them. The only action camera I’ve ever had overheat to the point of powering off was the DJI Osmo Action 2.

      I have owned some Sony and Panasonic mirrorless cameras that would overheat when recording in 4K in high frame rates and bitrates. Camera manufacturers continue to improve and fine tune to avoid this but it’s a challenge for action cameras when they are so tiny and have a lot of heat to dissipate.
