    Exactly! Not to mention, especially for new students, they are unfairly comparing 1, maybe 3 years of singing with singers like Bruce Dickinson who has more years as a singer than students have of life

    We forget to play. Focusing on the outcome and not enjoying the process. So when we rush to become good (something people work years and years for it), we fail to really explore and learn.

      I find it helps to sing a song that is usually sung by the opposite sex. That way, I can't really imitate that person.

    Michael Jackson also advised people to "learn from the masters" whenever he was asked what inspired him, and I think most aspiring vocalists have found themselves in exactly the same position you describe here - beating themselves up over not sounding exactly like their idols, instead of using their examples to add new tricks and techiques to their vocal toolbox and find their own wonderful style and tone. Thank you for this reminder, much appreciated. Oh, and I'd still be thrilled if you'd do an analysis of Marko Saaresto from Poets of the Fall sometime (Daze, Angel from Alexander Theatre Sessions, Cradled in Love live, one of these).

    Thanks for this video Chris, it was really timely for me and exactly what I was looking for! I put out a cover where I reinterpreted a song and tried to apply some inspiration from an amalgamation of various artists to explore my lower register and a breathier style of singing and got a comment that "I should find my own voice", even though the tone I went with was completely different from the original singer and I think it's what served the arrangement the best 🤷‍♂️ I wish more people realized that you can still take inspiration from artists through a bit of imitation as long as your aren't trying to sound "exactly" like them.

    I'm sure you're well aware, but you could make for a great cartoon voice actor, love you Chris, if it weren't for you I'd be scared to open my mouth and to try singing at all 😂. I have an extra question too, have you seen Bob Smeenk? He's another vocal teacher here on youtube and he has been a massive help, both of you taught me different stuff with breath support and it has added up to me actually growing my range, I went from a D4 chest voice to an F4 and now if I'm really warmed up and use a lot of energy I can actually hit a mixed B4, sounds pretty scratchy but I'm still technically hitting it which means eventually I can hit it *better* I think. You're nothing but an angel. I owe you a lot.

    Great video as always! Have you considered making a vocal analysis/reaction to Kamelot's former singer Roy Khan? There is a great live version of their song Abandoned on TH-cam for reference. An analysis for their current singer Tommy Karevik would also be much appreciated 😊

    It's true. I learned a lot trying to imitate Paul McCartney, Ann Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, even Mick Jagger.
    You have to be careful, though. People have wound up with polyp surgery for trying to make their voices do things they wouldn't naturally do. I knew Joe Elliot was hurting his voice the first time I ever heard Def Leppard, which made it hard for me to listen to them.
    I've often wondered how Paul McCartney was able to do things like "Oh Darling" or "Helter Skelter" and not lose his voice. Maybe it was all those 8 hour gigs in Germany.

    He's right. I was recording a cover of the Strokes YOLO and I was beginning to think I just didn't have the right type of voice for it. Frustrated, I did a silly take as a way overexaggerated version of Julian Casablancas (singer of The Strokes). That take came with a bit more ease than the other takes. Too bad I couldn't use it since I was just goofing off. Well, no. I listened back and I didn't sound anything like an impersonation of anybody. I sounded like me. And awesome. I show that recording off all the time now haha.

    Worried that this may be great and horrible advice at the same time. Done something similar for years and just experiment with things, but at some point along the line I think I just started chasing my own tail in circles. In the act of experimenting I lost balance and confused myself on where to even go.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      This is a real thing! I’ve helped students get out of that loop. The key is to always balance making your own stuff while singing lots of songs from lots of different artists and then letting those influences creep in without trying for anything specific.

    I think the best way to find your many voices is let the emotion you are channeling dictate your sound. This will force you to move into many unfamiliar places, and a lot of it can happen automatically. I'll include a short example here: th-cam.com/video/_nwtvIap-no/w-d-xo.html

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      I’m glad you brought up the title. I went through a ton of options. I landed on this one because people at this point know that they are not supposed to copy. And simply stating what the video is about in the title doesn’t work on TH-cam anymore for the algorithm. But people don’t really think about the fact that trying to find your own sound actually works against you. I wanted people to do a double take at the title so they’d get curious to see why.

    • @frankunodostres473
      @frankunodostres473 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @chrisliepe it's just a matter of interpretation in the end^^ i think "trying to find your own sound" (without trying to emulate someone else) is a good thing, I'm pretty sure you also said that in the past. Like when you told the story of how you developed your style by learning and drawing inspiration from so many different vocalists (kinda what mccartney is saying in the clip you played). So the same statement can be read in 2 different ways

    Paul is someone I NEVER try to copy. He threw out his voice decades ago. Seth Riggs has a great video of how Paul abused his voice. I don’t usually disagree with you but his way will destroy your voice!

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      playing with your voice and experimenting with how it can sound different based on who your inspired by will not damage your voice in and of itself. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water and say that this approach is bad because Paul abused his voice. It's true that Paul abused his voice... That just means he didn't budget or rest well at certain points in his career. That doesn't mean that what he did was bad. It's like saying: "This marathon runner hurt himself while training with a personal trainer so don't use that guys personal trainer... or better yet, don't try to run a marathon!"

    • @wandajames143

      @ I just know Seth Riggs and SLS etc… always say don’t yell like Paul did and pull up chest voice. I mean I love Paul but he really uses bad technique at times and hs voice wobbles all over, yet Stevie Wonder who was taught by Seth sounds fantastic still! So there is a difference
