  • Thailand’s pro-democracy protests are a uniquely iconic sight and there is a deeper meaning to the symbols the protestors use. Cultural anthropologist, Edoardo Siani, explains a little known world of symbolism and divine astrology that runs beneath the surface of Bangkok’s protest movement.

We sometimes tend to forget the luxury we have of talking about our governments without being jailed. Basic rights for us, luxury for others. I pray for everyone getting silenced by their governments.

@@user-rj5qr9sh2d “what is democracy?” It means rule by the people. A democracy is a system where people can change their rulers in a peaceful manner and the government is given the right to rule because the people say it may. Basic rights like freedom of speech should be a norm anywhere in such a system. Now idk what you don’t like about Europe, where we can say and do almost whatever we want and have a say in what is being changed, but anything we have is better than what is going on China, Thailand, Russia and many other countries, which is a luxury like I said. Also the only way to stop China is to cut ties, that’s it, simple as that. It’s the fear of no import/supply, that’s it. Also congrats for noticing America is not sincere after it was conquered and destroyed by white men with racist ideologies and a superiority complex which led to slavery and segregation for over 400 years and to killings of innocent Black and Native people, that are still happening. Of course they aren’t sincere, most people in office can’t come to terms with their shitty history and the fact that they don’t have a culture, and don’t support when the oppressed have a voice. It’s racism inserted into politics, basic human rights anyone should have, are still being politicized there. They didn’t even ban the KKK...insane. A very fucked up country indeed.

Love Thai people!! Their history, culture , language and legacy is widely misunderstood and largely unknown to the rest of the world yet Edoardo de an amazing job breaking down all the features and nuances of Thai culture in this context in Protesting. The yellow rubber ducks. They were first used in the Hong Kong protests. They were "smiling, cute and designed to ridicule" the China government. The Thais did the same, but figured out they added protection against water cannons and chemical sprays. They are passed to the front and held as shields. Yellow is the color of Thai Royal loyalists. Thus the symbol of the military "shooting water and chemicals" at itself.

And doing so we can infer the true meaning of such symbols, especially when taking account for the cultural around them, which they excluded pop culture, which would’ve probably explained a lot of this.

I think a political alternative has merit if this shows the ideas it has to the public for a common democracy's. The enclusion via free will into the vision laid open for the land of free people to look at and discuss. Vision is not certain it is a idea that then if the person or people with this sight feel yay fantastic this is opens to the whole nation's thoughts for consideration . The answers if democracratically more than the issues of the present government and Royal leadership can freely vote this new way. To demonstrate is to miss the feedback system within the present manifesto. In that the different ways which show hmm that needs repair politically or that is best left as is , this is working well within the local and national community.

It’s clear that these colour revolutions are not spontaneous. They even use the same symbols as the umbrella used in HK and the yellow ducks in Brazil.. The symbolism is just one of the tactics used on hybrid warfares.

Wow, what a mess of an interview, where the heck do you find that guy, conspiracy theorist chatroom? Red is because of it's represent nation on the flag, the red shirt from 10 years has nothing to do with monarchy, it's us the youth movement who is anti-monarchy. Umbrella because we fucking use it defend ourselves from water cannon. White dove is white dove, it represent peace same as everywhere else in the world, it's from an iconic pro-democracy song - White Dove. And flashlight, well, it's exactly because we use it in concert. Not everything need to have deep meaning behind it.

Isn't it the military (prayut chan ocha) who has the sweeping powers? He pretends to align with the king because the king has historically been so revered (the previous one, at least). Am I wrong? I might not understand the coup well.

Power of media and pop culture into transforming protest. Remind me of how much North Korea is trying to keep religion, social society great thinkers books out of their country. Hey perhaps K-pop is all what's needed to let that match.
