The Opioid Crisis Sweeping Africa | The War on Drugs

  • As the world has been transfixed by the opioid crisis in North America, another crisis, just as serious, has been unfolding almost unreported across Africa.
    The addictive prescription painkiller Tramadol has exploded in popularity, used by everyone from workers trying to cope with long hours and grueling labor, to university students looking to have a good time. It’s even the drug of choice for members of Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram, fueling their violence.
    Now, governments are threatening to crack down, using the same War on Drugs methods of repression that have failed everywhere else. And meanwhile, as counterfeit pills flood the continent, new research is questioning whether people are even taking real Tramadol at all.
    In The War On Drugs, we examine the social implications of prohibition worldwide. Any attempt to shut down the trade in drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine or weed invariably sets off a chain of events that just makes things worse, leaving a trail of death, illness, violence, slavery, addiction, crime and inequality across the globe. Everyone loses - except, in a weird kind of way, the drugs themselves.

    One big problem is it has antidepressant properties so when you become physically addicted to it and try to stop, you’re experiencing not only opiate withdrawal but also compounded depression.

You wouldn't think it, but when I quit cold-turkey, it put me thru some horrible withdrawals comparable to more extreme drugs. (& yes, I would know) ..the symptoms lasted for almost a month. The brain zaps were the weirdest feeling and very uncomfortable. Get off them shits now, if you are using them. Step yourself down slowly and don't look back. Take care 🙏

    • @markalexander3659
      @markalexander3659 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's because Tramadol is also an SNRI (Serotonin-Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitor) antidepressants, so you are actually going through two different withdrawals at once. Congrats on getting off them!

    • @iswhatitis94
      @iswhatitis94 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup it's a synthetic opioid and SNRI that's a crappy mix to come off of, that's like coming off Suboxone and SSRI at the same time your body and mind are gonna go through it heavy for at least a month. I've come off heroin, pain killers, fentanyl, Suboxone, methadone and the Suboxone and methadone were the worst to come off of. Withdrawal lasts for a whole month cause it's not natural like heroin or fentanyl with a few day withdrawal maybe a week Cause it's synthetic opioids like tramadol which mess you up pretty bad when it comes to coming off them the withdrawal is brutal especially cold turkey forget about it.

      Kratom left me with severe mood swings and never took care of my nerve pain. If you have chronic pain then methadone is the best way to go. As long as you don't use drugs outside of what they give you you can get plenty of take homes at one of their clinics. Some will restrict the carry amount of take homes so the most you can get is a week's worth. Others will do a month so it's like having a full script, although it takes months to build trust with them so at first you have to come in almost every day. But I think it's worth it. I walked into a clinic haven't been an actual addict but did have opiate experience and they started me the same day on a low dose and slowly worked me up over a few weeks span til I felt comfortable. I'm not saying it's for everyone but this drug has saved me in so many ways. I can finally work again after 2 shattered discs 🙌

      Kratom is still an opioid, not only that it has so many psychoactive alkaloids its not only attaching to supraspinal mu- and delta- opioid receptors, it also has effects on seretonin and Dopamin receptors. Which can give you pretty severe side effects.
      It's also an immunstimulant, so side effects like hair loss aren't unheard of. There are also a certain amount of unfortunate individuals which can't metabolize Kratom, which therefore leads to liver failure.
      There are literally thousands of side effects, for what? A safer opioid??? Not at all, you will still have withdrawal effects from it. It is physically more damaging then normal produced pharma opioids.
      The only thing is, it might be a weaker opioid then usual, but then again tramadol and kratom are on the same level in my subjective experience so it's definitely not the weakest opioid out there.
      You can absolutely get addicted to it as fast as you get from other opioids. Which can lead to the route of using even stronger stuff the further the addiction goes. Same ending.
      So no, don't take kratom, don't advertise it as a safe alternative. I hate people like you, so many kratom addicts running around thinking they are above junkies, even tho they themselves are opioid addicts. Just absolutely crazy to me

    Tramadol don’t get you high but helps boost ur mood if u suffer from depression. You have to take quite a few to get this affect and ur tolerance builds very quick. Withdrawals are horrible and would not recommend abusing them, it’s not worth it.

      Idk what this woman is talking about though. Tramadol is notorious for causing seizures, extreme nausea, and akathesia on its own. The drug is cheap that using another drug to mimic the high would probably cause you to lose money. It also isn't very common for other opioids to cause seizures like this because tramadol is basically the only opioid like drug that has SSRI properties which is what throws your body into a seizure.

    Tramadol can definitely cause people to collapse, I've seen it. Very weird instances too because they don't nod off, it's not an overdose and they are never in danger of dying. Their heart rates aren't even low. But they lose consciousness completely and just fall right over, coming out of it 10 or 20 minutes later. Very strange

      Motrin is an nsaid, no recreational use or euphoric effect at all. Tramadol is a synthetic opioid which people use recreationally and causes euphoria, especially in higher doses. I doubt it's very hard to get real tramadol in Africa. But I would have no idea if it were some sort of slang for different designer drugs. Hard to explain but if u know then u know. Was on that for about 4 years straight then once the prescriptions stopped I was hooked! Went to the streets for other opiates which wasn’t hard to find from where I was raised. Eventually lead to heroin. Been clean from all that for just over a year

    i was hella addicted to trams i took them back when they were supposed to be a non addictive alternative to regular opiates like hydrocodone and the withdrawal is hell because of the SSRI effect withdrawal along with the classic opiate withdrawal. you basically are detoxing from antidepressants and opiates at once with tramadol addiction

    Love the guy that does these vice videos. Tramadol is not only made a lab but is not the best opiate for me in terms of pain relief (for me that is)
    With most opiates...I just tend not to care about the pain whole using them. Fentanyl is great in safe hospital environment,.but not a drug for recreation as the chances of going over is very real. Codeine I find is useful for me and is lighter on the stomach. Different bodies for different chemicals ...slot of people using opiates experience constipation. Thankfully they do not bind me up. I have only been constipated ok n opiates in a hospital setting. I put this down to the fact that in hospital im not moving slot.
    This is a tough one. It needs a serious adult debate. The war on drugs has never worked.
    Another thing humans tend to do is take chemicals they know nothing about...I find that absolute madness. Take care all

    I went from a hydrocodone addict, to tramadol, now kratom....kratom, if used in high dose and the right strain gets me as high as the hydrocodone did. And when you quit there are almost no physical withdrawals. However, that makes it actually harder to quit, because you never hit rock bottom so you don't see a need. Plus it's everywhere and legal where I live. I've only been able to quit for 2 weeks in the last several years. At the dosage I take it, it ruins a lot...sex drive, energy and drive in general...makes me super complacent and apathetic about everything....

    • @mongogojjo5944
      @mongogojjo5944 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tramadol is so garbage man. Kratom undoubtedly gives more of a "high" than tramadol does, for me it's kinda similar to hydrocodone but not quite as strong, in terms of weak opioids I'd rank them like this
      1. Tramadol (weakest)
      2. Codeine
      3. Kratom
      4. Hydrocodone (strongest of the weak opioids)
      That's just from personal experience, it's worth noting that I used to be addicted to heroin (smoked, never Injected) and was hooked on other opioids as well, everything from percs to tianeptine..so I definitely know what I'm talking about here, krarom itself in leaf form is only a partial agonist but mitragynine and 7hydroxymitraygynine isolated are very potent opioids, look into it. That's why kratom extract shots are so potent, there's more mitraygynine and7hydroxymitraygynine in them and higher concentrations of those alkaloids results in a stronger effect due to higher mu opioid receptor affinity.

    • @mongogojjo5944
      @mongogojjo5944 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh and also dude, kratom absouletly does have physical withdrawals hahahaha....damn 8 months later how you feeling now bud? Kratom withdrawal isn't as bad as pills or dope obviously but it's still very real. Stop listening to people who claim kratom withdrawal is "only like caffeine withdrawal bro" that's totally bullshit, if kratom gets you as high as hydro do you seriously think there's gonna be no withdrawals? For me quitting kratom extracts was similar to coming off some vicodin+some extra low energy and depression. I took it daily daily 3 years in the form of both extracts and powder.

      @@mongogojjo5944 I used the Choice brand green maeng da. Ive been on it every day for like four years with a couple weeks off total in that time. I was taking 6 to 8 pills, three times a day at my peak. I stepped that down to maybe 12-14 pills a day most recently. I'm just now off it completely for 3 weeks. I had about 3 days of severe anxiety and depression. Super emotional, like I could cry at the thought of anything. I felt waves of guilt hitting me, and fatigue and weakness. I feel totally normal now, except...I do feel a bit manic. Like I have too much energy. I legit feel like I'm on cocaine sometimes. Thoughts racing, jumpy...it's really odd. Otherwise pretty solid, and feeling more motivated to do things....I lost all motivation on the kratom.
