  • Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal advocates for democracy in Thailand and countries where he believes the Chinese government threatens people’s human rights and freedom. He is one of many netizens who got behind the Milk Tea Alliance that was formed in April 2020, when a Twitter war erupted between Chinese netizens and pro-democracy Thais.
    This Gen z, online movement is calling out China’s rising power and supporting home-grown democracy movements through self-deprecating humour, trolling Chinese bots and memes.
    Note: At 2:50, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal is referred to as Student Union President. He longer holds this position.

    The Milk Tea Alliance was created when Bright Vachirawit (Thai BL Actor) commented on his ex girlfriend's post that she looked like a "pretty Taiwanese girl" (she was in Taiwan at the time). This comment then upset Chinese netizins and they started attacking him.
    During this time, his first BL series was being aired so fans were more aware of what was happening on screen and online.
    Then Thai BL fans started defending him, and later BL fans from multiple other countries (like myself) started defending him too. This later grew into defending against ALL propaganda and attacks (including COVID related misinformation and false rumours) from Chinese netizins, and really gained traction in 2020 (for obvious reasons). And so the Milk Tea Alliance was formed because a lot of the fans of BL are in South East Asia and all share the same interests, including drinking Milk Tea. During 2020 Bright's first series called "2gether" was also being aired which is why Milk Tea Alliance got so much support and attention.
    At the same time the Hong Kong protests were still happening, which is why even people like Joshua Wong posted pictures of himself watching the series in support of the movement. I think this later grew into the pro-democracy protests in Thailand

      As only two non-nato allies in ASEAN. USA has pushed Thailand to its limits. Democracy in Thailand results in no less corruption than her neighbors. Conservative force is deeply rooted in many aspects of Thai society.
      There is no strong censorship in Thailand. People can express different opinions.

    • @cyzcyt
      @cyzcyt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Because it's complicated. Democracy in Thailand has been fashioned into autocratic elites from Bangkok vs the monarchy and its royalist
      In that way for the average Thai person. It is a fight where he doesn't win, no matter which one ends up running the government
      Officials are still gonna be corrupt. Money is still the real king. And there is not enough press freedoms to hold anyone accountable
      So why bother with democracy. It's just them elites playing at the high stakes table

    • @DrejaAndi
      @DrejaAndi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't hear much about it in western media because western media doesn't care as much about democracy as it pretends to. If it doesn't interest the corporations and special interests who sponsor western corporate media, you aren't going to hear much about it. They focus first on issues they think they can make money from and then spin it as caring about ethics and journalism.

Blame China? It's a trend right now. It helps people give a clear enemy and helps gain support. But at some point you need to realize that the different countries in SEA are in different stage of maturity and most of them hasn't matured enough to have good foundation for democracy. i mean......even if thai isnt a democratic country , the rulers still make good developments and improvements for thai and its citizens .......this even even that big of a problem.....in myanmar , our democratically elected leaders got detained and the country is now run by the military coup who are killing its own citizens who are against them ....im not sayin g that the problem in thai isnt real , but this problem is far too small compared to the situation in myanmar right now....im sorry for any grammatical mistakes i may or may not have made and to all of you guys who might get offended by this comment .....but......myanmar needs more of the media attention right now
