- In the birthplace of modern fascism, Matteo Salvini’s ‘Italy First’ message gained the support of the far right who saw him as a fierce defender of Italy’s borders.
But many Black Italians say that Matteo Salvini’s language put targets on their backs. A failed candidate for Salvini’s own political party hunted down people of African origin in a prolonged shooting spree, and Salvini’s own actions while in power led to hundreds of migrants becoming stranded at sea.
In this episode of Decade of Hate, host Tim Hume looks at how Salvini is facing kidnapping charges for orders he made while in office, and how experts argue that his divisive language has left a lasting imprint on Italian politics.

I think most of the problem comes from the bad politics we had. Speaking about immigration: many politicians let the immigrants get inside but they didn’t make up a plan to help them. Without help they end up on the road and do bad things. The politicians don’t care also about Italians so we have many poor Italians . And this creates a “war between poors”. According to me some Italians aren’t really racist they are just angry and many politicians use that.
