    I've had this trailer for two years but never tried the Badland winch to pull a car on. Sorry for all the talking but people go nuts about winch cables and towing, so I feel like I need to clarify some things.

    Not being disrespectful to anyone please don't take this dude's advice to heart.
    Even a small 2000 lb winch cable breaking under load can critically injure you.
    Winches will generally start pinging it'll be a very funny sound when you're reaching the breaking point of the cable.
    I've seen people lose fingers eyes and hands
    When in doubt sidestep whatever you're pulling
    So if it breaks your out of the danger zone.
    The life you save may be your own

    If on doubt, you can always add snatch block and double the pulling power sacrificing the speed.

    I ran the 5500 pound atv winch on my car trailer for the first year and half towing mainly scrap cars. Just run a snatch block all the time and it should be good I pulled cars onto my trailer in park and with out wheels all the time with it.

    I had this winch on my gooseneck trailer and it finally died on me last night haha. My brother reeled cable in one spot and it broke the long bolts that hold the two halves together. It served me well over past 4 years pulling various cars and equipment. I think the biggest/heaviest thing I pulled was a 90’s Chevy 3500 extended cab. It was torture for the winch but it got it!! I’m gonna be extra stingy when I put new winch on haha.

    Not bad I mounted a 2500lb Harbour Freight winch on my work truck to load my Lincoln arc welder it only weighs around 550lbs with the running gear it works real nice I only need to replace the cable soon but everything else is good with it

    I used this model to draw a 4k car up and down without trouble. Until I was not watching the reel, the steel cable went off to one side ran over bail and got wedged between the drum and housing. The torque twisted the mounting plate and almost separated the two sides. Pay attention to what the cable is doing.

    What model Haul Master A-frame trailer jack do you have? It appears to have a foot/not a wheel. 2000 lb capacity? Any problems with the road clearance?

    What's your power source setup? Is this just a battery on the trailer that's charged through your 7 pin plug? Was the truck running?

  • @Canibal_Animal
    @Canibal_Animal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Its a 5000 pound winch.... That truck weighs maybe 4000-4500. It should be able to theoretically pick the truck completely off of the ground vertically. I don't understand the need to have a huge winch on a car trailer. A 3000 pound should be able to pull any road vehicle onto a trailer.

      I run a badlands 3500 on my 20ft car hauler 2ft dove tail. An it pulls cars an trucks with ease. Granted the ones I pull up roll an might have flat tires. But haven't tried anything that was locked up.

    Since you can't have anything without someone stealing it. I just bought this winch instead of a 12,000lbs one. I put it on a receiver hitch that way I can put it in the cab. Glad to see it will work. Thanks.

  • @johnhawkins8049

    i think the reasoning behind the smaller size winch is that you not using it to pull a car or truck out of a ditch. the amount of pulling force needed is much less since its a short roll up the ramp. cable should be good enough for just that

    • @TapiaJ
      @TapiaJ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah my exact thought. If that thing was attached on a over head crane and a car was being pulled off the ground. More than likely that cable would snap or motor would give out.

    Boost your confidence a little more... my buddy pulled his 3/4 ton crew cab diesel onto my 32" high deck-over with and without a snatch block. That little winch can do amazing things. Curb weight of his crew cab is just over 6500lbs. It's quite impressive that it pulled that much weight at such a steep angle.

    on flat terrain under 400 lbs of force will make most vehicles roll a bit more to get the vehicle up the ramp but really even a 1000 lb winch could easily get the job done especially if you use a snatch block. Now if you want to be able to pull your car onto the trailer with the brakes stuck or some other issue then a much higher capacity winch is ideal.

    • @aDIYCarGuy
      @aDIYCarGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      how heavy are the pipes / beams?

    • @cutweldngrind
      @cutweldngrind 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aDIYCarGuy pipes weigh about 4 to 6 lbs per foot and can be up to 20 ft long. I say 250lbs for pipes and beams about 500lb max. I do lots of small projects alone and a gin pole build is in the works. I think the 9000 cost 260 and 12000 around 300 with coupons. I like the tensioner on the bigger unit. Tractorsupply has a 9000lb unit but the motor is rated about 2hp less than the Badland. I may order the 12k this next pay check.

  • @spanky522
    @spanky522 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The 3500 lb. Badland winch would be strong enough to do that also. I have one mounted on the front of my 1/2 ton pickup and slid the front of the pickup sideways on my gravel driveway. It has plenty of power and will actually break the cable (3/16") without a problem.

  • @timsawyer7443
    @timsawyer7443 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey -- I enjoyed your video! I inherited a 5000 lb. ATV Badlands winch (maybe this exact one?) and was considering installing it on my car hauler just to use with my tractor or other smaller things, if necessary, but now I'm seeing that it could even work with the big stuff!
    Will you please let me know how yours was installed (I know you didn't do it, but just what you observe) -- bolted on, welded on, combination?
    Also (and even more importantly), how is it powered? Dedicated battery, running from wires to trailer (if you can even do that -- there's a LOT I don't know about all this!), long jumper cables to the truck battery, or what?
    Any thoughts and insights you can provide would be helpful! Thanks!

    • @aDIYCarGuy
      @aDIYCarGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My winch is bolted to a bracket which is bolted to the trailer with grade 8 bolts. It's wired so that jumper cables can be hooked up from a battery, and I run long jumper cables from the car's battery, and sometimes another 12v in line with that to pull up big stuff. I'd rather have a dedicated battery setup.

    If you were to use a snatch block (which you have plenty cable for), you can double your pulling power even though it takes twice as long to do, it's easier on the winch.

    • @11ATW
      @11ATW 4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @johnjames5020

    He doesn't need a snatch block geniuses. He has plenty of pulling power it wasn't stalling. All a snatch block would do is make it take twice as long and these cheap winches have terrible Duty Cycles. Some of them are as low as 5%.
