I believe this mod is 100% true Was one of the first mods I made to my 04 model back in the day (I've still got her too) and I still think it makes a reasonable difference.
I put a switch on my grey wire up on the headlight shroud - I use WR mapping for low speed single trail and it seem to pull better in low down torquey situations. And on YZ setting the revs spin-up quicker and it seems to wind-out further for top-end open high speed runs.

I put a new pipe on mine opened up the air box and put YZ throttle stop screw in the carb along with one of those Moose fuel mixture screws. Was ok I guess but until I did the grey wire it was just boring. As soon as I did this everything changed and the bike is so much more aggressive. Looking to do the YZ450 exhaust cam next apparently that coupled with the mods above basically gives you YZ power throughout with 5 gears. I have read that if you ride on road a lot then the YFZ quad gears work well in the WR and won’t destroy your GB running on the road. The WR is road legal here in Aus and comes with an on road and off-road kit. On road has all the lights etc and off-road gives you bigger carb main jet, needle puller, smaller front sprocket and the throttle stop screw. I paid AUD$12999 new for this bike and had to still do all the above mods before happy with it. No AIS on bikes here either.
Nice and helpful 👍👍 that WR is in great shape. Really old bike and radiators and engine looks almost brand new 😀. Where I live we ride hard enduro and our bikes are usually beaten to hell within few years. Your bike looks barely used in extreme conditions.

Когда стал катать на сложных медленных участках, я стал часто глохнуть, даже работа сцеплением не сильно улучшила положение. В итоге вернул всё как было, вставил серый провод назад в фишку, и появились нормальные низа.
Для тех, кто катает что-то похожее на хард (горки, камни, брёвна), а не просто по лесу - не советую применять этот мод.

My 2003 wr250f opens the throttle all the way but still has the gray wire connected in the harness would it work better if I just disconnect it? And gain access to the yz mapping.
Can you just cut the grey wire and not do the rejetting?
Why not just cut the metal connector off where it is thin, with some side dikes, and slide the stub back into the plastic connector port to keep moisture out?

Have you ever seen a wr450 engine we're the valve timing is set one tooth of to pass the emissions regulation. I was checken my valve clearance and couldn't get the timing marks in the right position. When I contacted my local yamaha dealer he told me that the timing is ofsetted on purpose. So I going to see if can set it correctly so that is yz spec. P.s I have a 06 wr450f.

I have a 2003 wr450f.
I linked the grey wire to a Tokyo mods two way bar mount tuner switch and have both worlds at the ready.
Just run tune one with continuity from the grey wire..this will leave it "in line" and make the connection.
Just leave tune two open and that pulls the grey wire out of the connection and gives you the map change.

Yes, but don't switch it while the bike runs.

So if I just do the gray wire and the air box and exhaust uncork on my 2008 wr450 then will it make a difference ?
yea, I think so.. and make sure you can use full range of throttle as well

Thanks Sam! You got a great bike, I think one more thing to do is to make sure she gets enough air, remove the snorkel if you have one and open the airbox. I did it on my 2004, I bet there is similar restriction on 2017. Check out my video for a reference. Good luck Sam!

Did you do this in addition to changing out the stock ECU to the GYTR ECU competition one? I have a 2012 wr450 that I'm doing all these mods to right now.
2012 is fuel injected and thats why you need GYTR ecu for it, you dont do grey wire mod on your bike. Mine was 2004 with the carb, so I did grey mod and rejeted the carb.

You don't have to. It is other way around, if you do throttle stop, its recommend to do grey wire.

what about the 2019 wr250f? Do you know if it does or doesn't have the throttle stop and grey wire still? The dealer I bought it from uncorked the intake already but not sure about the throttle stop or grey wire
i think they probably have throttle stop, they are fuel injected, so you need to play with the maps if you want to get the best out if it
@@dirtniron I'll have to dig into it and see once I get my new radiator. Dropped it right on a boulder so I'll be in there and see if it's got it. It seems like it does to me, but I don't have another bike in my garage to compare to that doesn't have it. I'll post an update once I do. Won't be for a couple weeks but good to know for others on the web trying to figure it out, all the info on this on the forums is from the latest 2012 and about older bikes. I am also getting the competition ecu and the tuner.

So a year later after I watched your video I look at my 01 wr250f and the colors of the wires are different and I don't have a grey wire? Any suggestions?

Quick question for ya if you don’t mind, my 06 wr250f breaks up at about 1/4 throttle and for the life of me I can’t figure out why, I’ve cleaned the carb, changed the jets a few times, messed with the fuel screw, disconnected the tps sensor still no luck any suggestions?
Maybe starving for gas, try bigger pilot jet.
Dirt N Iron it’s getting to much fuel, when I pulled the plug it was completely black, so i went from a 175 to a 170, then back up to a 178 still doing the same thing for main jets the pilot of a 42
Upstate Callout pilot jet is important for 1/4 throttle try to go bigger on pilot. See what happens

Great Video.... but a question, I’ve a 2004 Wr450f , checked the throttle stop screw on carb and it’s a short 23.18 mm one, not cut down but looks factory fitted. On looking under the tank I noticed the Grey wire in the middle is still connected? I’ve done a top end strip down, fitted after market fuel screw but just still having a few seconds of high reving after throttling down. Main issue is do I remove the Grey wire ??? Thanks in Advance
That sounds like a carburetor problem, i would check all the seals, maybe that vacuum seal is worn out..

I have a 2007 wr 250 f with all stock no mods. Would I have to jet it before doing this and o ring mod?
You don't have to but I highly recommend to jet it and do oring mod, you will love that change.
And don't forget to remove throttle stop, I have video about it. Also open the exhaust.

I've got an 02 wr250f and I was gonna do this but I don't have the same wiring as this one. Its a 6 wire plug but doesn't have a blue and white wire, its solid light blue and there is no gray wire. And it doesn't even look like it was there to begin with at all.

@@seir7704 nah, I left it as is. I think the previous owner did all the performance mods available to this bike. I hit 77 mph on it once, backed by GPS. I'm good with that.

No need to mate, on the 400 you can advance the exhaust cam 1 tooth on the timing chain to pick up the yz400 power.

This is for carbureted bikes, so I think 2011 was the last year.

@@trippettd123 yes I think it should be the same. I would first do other free mods thought. Air box, exhaust, throttle stop, and then grey wire. Also you might need to adjust your jetting.

No, this only works on older bikes with the carburetor

DID IT ON MY 04/450 AND DIDNT NOTICE ANYTHING
did you do throttle stop and other mods as well? grey wire changes timing in high RPM, it wont be noticeable if you are not reaching that range. to be honest, I havent really compared just this single mod, I did all of them and saw good results, some guys are saying they dont feel grey wire at all, some say they feel it. There is bunch of info on forums out there. on the video you can read what Yamaha has to say about this mod. I suggest to do all of them, then you gonna see some gains.

How did that happen? Maybe wrong wire? This mod should be 100% safe, it's recommend by Yamaha as well
Ya you must of not done it right , it's safe and proven by Yamaha in your case sounds like you didn't do it right .
