      I’ve been playing with free versions of SketchUp for nearly 15 years, and I have most certainly developed many bad habits. My favorite tip from this video was “group early and group often.” Now that I’m in my 60s, and near retirement, maybe I’ll have time to learn how to use the tools correctly. Thank you for the tips!

    i've been using Sketchup for years and the Group and Move tools took a bit to figure, but are the biggest tips for me from your tutorial. The BEST thing i learned was to be able to type the dimensions of a line or square in the lower right box that opens right after you draw something. This way your models can be dimensionally accurate. The next big thing for me was using the measuring tool and placing pick points and points to draw to. I really like SketchUp to mock up all kinds of ideas and concepts.

    Enjoyed this. After working in CAD (solidworks & autodesk) 5 years ago, I was tempted to run with my physical draft right into 3D model from scratch. Having the free version, where all useful Solid Tools are hidden, did not make this easy- of course, LOL. So this little reminder to go back and maybe do the longer and simpler process was appreciated (as much as I didn't want to xD).
    Thanks for your time and clarity!

    Starting in 2D view can work well depending on what you're doing. I use to stay in the 2D view when sketching out the top down of a building's floor, but something more complicated like a chair seriously needs you to start in 3D. A good skill to have while 3D modelling is simply to be able to identify when to use 3D and when to use 2D.
    Another tip that I would tie into this is simply not feeling inclined to eventually combine the finished model into one solid model, but keep using separate groups for each separate object in a hierarchy of groups. This allows you to focus on one bit of the model at a time, and allows you to use the 2D view technique for each individual part of the model, however I personally find doing that specifically time consuming and often doesn't get the most accurate results.

    Great tutorial and one of the more understandable on the tube!
    Question... what precision do i need to use for woodworking? I'm
    designing a flag case and drawing in the height of the triangle then
    querying the length of the piece. If I set the precision to 1/16" for
    ie... I could be off by 1/32" give or take. Is that correct? I'm
    confused. H. E. L. P.

    • @SketchUpSchool
      @SketchUpSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's right: If you set the precision to 1/16, then SketchUp will round to the nearest 1/16 which means things could be off by 1/32 or less. (And happy to hear you liked the video!)

    Hi Alex, there is a major shortcut missing from Sketchup: toggling the Select Tool! Imagine if no matter which tool you are using, holding down the Space bar would toggle on the Select Tool. Is there a way to customize this?

    • @SketchUpSchool
      @SketchUpSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can press Spacebar to switch to the Select Tool, but then you need to hit a key to go back to the other tool (the key for that tool). As far as making it into a toggle, I am not aware of a way to do that.

    Random question but since Sketchup is now a subscription do you think Sketchup Pro 2021 is worth upgrading to? I currently have the 2017 Pro version which I purchased. Thank you for your videos and expertise. 😊

    • @SketchUpSchool
      @SketchUpSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what you are using SketchUp to do. If you use LayOut to document your designs, there have been enough changes that I think the upgrade is worth it. Also, there may be extensions that only support later versions of SketchUp - so that would depend on the types of extensions you may want to use.
      If you want to follow up with this discussion, send us an email to team@sketchup.com and we'll be happy to continue to help you figure out whether the upgrade is worth it. (If you reply here we don't get notified and may miss it)

    • @SketchUpSchool
      @SketchUpSchool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The truth is that you should do whatever is most comfortable for you. But in our experience, for new users, it can be too much to try to bend their mind around navigating and drawing in 3D perspective view... and is much easier to get a handle on the basics in a 2D view to begin with.

      Yes, you can create a simple 2D floor plan using SketchUp Free. We have a TH-cam video that outlines the process and while we use SketchUp Pro during the video, we also point out how it can be done with SketchUp Free. Take a look at that video here: th-cam.com/video/KVDnb47KBy8/w-d-xo.html

    Really useful - I didn't even know you could start off in 2D. What a difference! I've found all the videos I've tried so far lose me as soon as I start as I can't conceptualise the 3d from the beginning. I want to design gardens and flowerbeds (often unusual shapes as I have to stick to the owner's original bed) - is there any way I can do this with Sketchup?

    • @SketchUpSchool
      @SketchUpSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad this video was helpful! And yes, SketchUp is great for designing unusually shaped garden beds. The best way to learn how is to learn the fundamentals of how to draw and edit in SketchUp - those skills will be all you need to then learn to draw the types of shapes you need. Of course, you could try to teach yourself here on TH-cam, but if you want a more structured approach, I recommend our Complete Intro to SketchUp course which is a part of our Video Course Library. You can learn more about the Video Course Library here: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library

      We have video courses, but they are recorded using SketchUp Pro which has a different looking user interface than the free, web-based free version of SketchUp... so unless you would like to learn using those courses (you can learn more at www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library), we unfortunately don't know of a course that specifically covers the web-based free version of SketchUp.

    A really great up to date video! I am about to embark on a new career to draw property plans here in Spain. I used to draw them by hand so I have a great knowledge of 2D drawings and my students when I taught engineering used to use Sketchup some years back but this is all new to me now. Thanks so much for a great video and especially sharing the notes in pdf to keep. I was going to start with free version and then go Pro, as they say, when my work takes off. Can I still access the 2D plan drawing modules in the free version? Thanks again Sally

      Really happy to hear you liked the video! Be aware that the Free version has a different interface than the Pro version. So there will be an adjustment that comes with switching from Free to Pro later. As for your question about accessing 2D plan drawing modules... I'm not sure I understand. Can you explain a bit more? (Please email team@sketchupschool.com with more details as we don't get notified of replies here and are likely to miss your response... we will better be able to help you if you send us a message)

    What are the benefits going from pro to studio?
    I’m renewing my licence and tempted to go to studio but don’t want to waste $$. If I sign up for pro now and decide on studio later will I still be eligible for the $500 promotion? I’m taking a screenshot in hopes I can speak to someone during the week.

      @SketchUpSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kara - with Studio (only available for PC) you get V-Ray for SketchUp and Trimble Scan Essentials. If you need both of those things, then Studio could be worth it. If you only need V-Ray for SketchUp (along with SketchUp Pro), then you don't have to upgrade to Studio as you can get V-Ray for SketchUp a la carte (from the Chaos website) with SketchUp Pro for less money. If you need more help understanding your options, send us a message at team@sketchupschool.com and we'll be sure to answer any other questions you have.

    In over 20 years as a drafter and designer I have used AutoCAD, ProE, Solid Works, Inventor, and CAD Key. I have to say that hands down SketchUp is the least intuitive tool I have ever used. Maybe it is because I was trying to do mechanical design work in this software but it was painful.

    • @SketchUpSchool
      @SketchUpSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it seems like folks who come from a traditional CAD drafting background have a lot of habits from those programs that make the transition to SketchUp feel less intuitive than those who come to SketchUp without that background. Lots of changes in how to do things in SketchUp vs. traditional CAD programs.
