You mentioned to move it and then hit Option. I thought, I don't have an option button. I then realized you are on a Mac. I was paying more attention to what you're teaching in SketchUp. I have Windows so I had to press different buttons to figure out what button would execute a copy. On Windows, it's control. Just wanted to share. I’ve had this damn program for almost a year, in fact my subscription runs out next month...this is the first tutorial I have found that I come away feeling like I learned something useful. Everything is explained clearly, in a practical way, and it makes sense. Thank you for the video.
I've recently started using SketchUp in a 30-day free trial. There's a lot to learn! I've been watching TH-cam instruction videos about SketchUp that have been helpful but, it's amazing (and often confusing) how different instructors have very different teaching techniques, good and not-so-good. Being a retired college professor, I'm finicky about teaching techniques. April is an excellent teacher. Third, she exudes a pragmatic positivity that is infectious and develops instant trust from her viewers. This is paramount. I turn to April's videos first when I want to learn a new technique that I know little or nothing about because she's a delight to watch and gives solid information that I know has been well-researched. Kudos to you, April, for all of the wealth of knowledge you bring to each and every video. I feel honored to be one of your students.
As a beginning woodworker, I have found this to be the best video on how to begin using Sketchup! I'm an Engineer that uses AutoCAD every day and found this program to be very similar, but April really shows it well. Thank you April for helping someone like me understand Sketchup through a beginner's eye. You're the best!
April is a natural teacher! This very basic tutorial appears to be exactly what I need to get over the seemingly huge initial stumbling block of getting started with this very capable program. Looking forward to learning enough to hopefully be able to design out some awesome workshop design/layout scenarios before I do the build.
April, I have watched a few "tutorials" on Sketchup on TH-cam. Yours was the only one that I watched and followed effortlessly and without getting bored. You have an innate ability to dissect the subject matter into easy-to-understand elements. Thank you.
This is by far the best tutorial on SketchUp I’ve ever seen. I’ve been intimidated by learning this program so I’ve avoided using it altogether. I can say in the last week I’ve spent a couple hours practicing every day and I’ve successfully modeled all new cabinets for my laundry room and a new built-in wine rack for my basement! So much easier and helps you develop a strategy for how you’ll actually build it, too. Keep going with this - so much knowledge you have to share, I’m sure!! Thanks from Nebraska! :)
@@justwatching7116 dumb question, did you pay for this program or use free online tutorial. I am building out closet and laundry room. FINALLY going to learn this program to get the project going.

Perfect explanation, no hype, very easy to understand and follow along. Thank you so much for saving me so many hours of learning. April you are the best.
Have been using SketchUp for years. Now I know so much more about how to use it properly and just how much time I've wasted doing things the wrong way. The penny dropped with components... Such a simple concept that has opened up my world. Many many thanks for a thorough and simple video.
I've had SketchUp on my computer for years and use it once in a blue moon. Because of that, it's a huge learning curve all over again each time. As I"m beginning another project, I looked for videos on SketchUp and found you. The basic skills you taught are the exact ones needed for me to work on my simple projects. Because of your help, I'm now designing a lean-to addition for my shed. Thank you so much!
Me too, I started so many times and failed, and this video is the only video that kept me interested and got me all the way to the end of the video and I got some useful sketch out of it.
I've been struggling through a paid online Sketchup tutorial by Fine Woodworking. April, this video answered all the foundational issues I've been missing. Thank you so much!
Great video. One of the hardest things to get used to is that you don't click and hold the mouse button down, so unlike every other software. You emphasized the no hold operation that is required. Cleared up a lot of difficulties I was having. Now on to video 2!
"What I hear I forget, what I see, I remember, what I do .... I understand. What I teach, I understand better." After your video I can teach my friends this part of Sketchup with confidence. So many comments below reflect my feelings as well. Intuitive, patient, clear explanations with logical sequencing and thought. A treat to experience and learn from your video. You have "it." the subtle, yet monstrous ability to connect with your audience in a meaningful and engaging fashion . Well done April.
I have watched at least a dozen "Beginner" videos for Sketchup over the years, (all the way back to the early days that Google owned it) and I've never been able to grasp it, until now. Your teaching style is similar to mine. I used to teach Accounting Software classes. I would teach the classes like I was teaching my Mom how to do it. You explain the simplest of tasks without making us feel like idiots. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
I've been mucking around with sketchup for ages and never really got very far. This is by far the best and simplest tutorial I've seen, including their own.
Absolutely brilliant! I’ve been looking for a good tutorial on Sketchup for weeks now and this has it all. I like your presentation speed, no gaps, no bulls**t, no umming and erring 😄. I first started watching your videos over 4 years ago, maybe more like 5 years, you did small projects. And made your workshop shelves, French cleat style which I copied for my own workshop. You’ve come a long way since then and so has your tools and machinery ! You’ve got more equipment than I had in my School workshop. Keep safe
April, your lessons are so much better than others, easy to follow and learn great traits! Maybe listen to you so long, just comfortable and familiar with you. Joined you building first shop way back when!
I love your Videos.. im a Carpenter from Phoenix.. born and Raised in New Mexico on the Navajo Nation... I build different projects when i visit back home with my Niece and cant wait to show her your channel.. shes very Smart and Hands on,she is always sewing , but has no problem and a great additude when i ask to help me with a porch or Furniture, Thanks 4 all the Videos💯❤🙏😎
April, like so many others have mentioned, you have such a wonderful presentational style, very succinct and clear. I too have tried several times to pick up SketchUp but stopped due to boring and confusing videos. Your video was perfect! Thank you and I am looking forward to all of your other videos now.
You get the award for the best woodworking sketchup tutorial on TH-cam. Well done! I had to learn most of this the hard way, trial and error. Your instruction and delivery are excellent. Thank you.
Well April after watching your channel for some time I’m really impressed. I’ve been a electrician for going on close to 40 years something I love. But I love love wood working and I’m building a timber frame house I have a vision and this software will put me on the right path thank you so very much for this. It was a lot to take in but I will watch again thank you once again
Hi April, I'm very glad that you decided to shoot the video where you deal with CAD system. Few authors - carpenters discuss this topic. I do not need it, I am an engineer and I master several of these drawing programs. But I like to see such a dispenser processed directly by the joiner. Thanks for the rest of your fans.
I have tried to use this program several times and the frustration drives me back to pencil and paper every time. I used AutoCAD in college, so I didn’t think this could be so difficult. I love all your videos, so decided to give your explanation a try since it would likely correlate to woodworking. You came through! I feel like I can sit down and whip something out now after just this one video. I can’t wait for #2. Thank you!
My previous sessions with SketchUp usually ended in frustration and colorful language. Your videos taught me a few key concepts about moving, rotating and push/pulling that I did not get from the other online tutorials. I am a much happier modeler. Thank you!
I've used AutoCad for several decades, but never SketchUp. This is a perfect tool for quick 3D modeling of projects for the wood shop. Great job with this into!! Definitely worth the time to watch this!! Well done, thanks!
I just started using sketchup and tried to learn by following a couple other people... I should have went with my first thought on watching your video. You explained everything very well. Did not get frustrated once. Thank you.
THANK YOU! Since I'm just getting started with woodworking, it has been so difficult to figure out how to get plans just right. I have purchased some from various youtubers. This will help so much in being able to fully DIY. Your explanations in all of your videos are so straightforward and to the point. Again, THANK YOU!!
Wow! I started and stopped some sketchup courses on Udemy that I just could not get through (mostly because of pacing and deliver of the content). This video was more helpful than trying to grind it through those. Can't wait for the next video. Thanks so much!
OMG April i tried to teach myself Sketch Up and i got so friggin frustrated i was so happy to see that you one of my favorite TH-camrs was doing this series ! I appreciate any kind of help I’m 56 years old and a retired Wookworker by trade with no professional help on computers actually i self taught myself as much as i could after suffering a Major Stroke that forced me to retire early as the Traumatic Brain Injury wiped out 90 to 95% of my brains right hemisphere which actually controls the left side of your body movements so now everything i do i can only use my right hand to do it my left hand and arm are partially paralyzed now that you showed some basics i will try the Sketch up again ! As. After my original Frustration i just shut down that Computer all together I know that i will enjoy drawing in it as unfortunately. After the injury its nearly impossible to sketch by hand any more on top of it all after the Stroke and leaving my job my lifestyle changed radically both physically, financially , and of course Emotionally as well as i did wind up losing everything i owned at one time At this time I’m between homes and Shops but i do hope this is temporary for now and actually do hope to set up a new shop that would be capable for me to use safely ! I did watch this video and its exactly what i was hoping to find before when i tried SketchUp. After downloading it
craig although nowhere as bad as your condition I also lost my physical ability down to just one side function now (right side use now). would like to collaborate with you about a business
Ello April Wilkerson, I have been an admirer of your work for years, you will not imagine my surprise and joy when I see that you are giving tutorials on sketchup, a pending subject in my extensive and long list of things to learn congratulations and I am already 100% practicing skechup with you greetings from Argentina
April, I have been watching your videos sense you where working in your garage. It’s amazing how far you have come. I’am very proud of you, God bless you. I will be watching your videos as long you want to make them . 👏🏻👍🏻❤️
I was about to bang my head repeatedly against the wall when I realize the problem with what I was doing was using a comma instead of a semicolon because I work in the metric system. I've had SketchUp for a couple of months and it seemed really hard to use, but now I'm gonna give it a go. Thanks for this video!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I tried to learn this program a few years ago but gave up. You make it so clear and simple! Please continue with the tutorials. Great job!
Amazing, you are such a natural teacher! I am thankful I found your channel. I feel much more confident using Sketchup now and can't wait to apply these techniques, and dive into some more of your woodworking videos!!
great intro April. Only thing I'd add is with the push pull tool once you have the face selected you can tap the control/command key to leave the original edge lines in place (so the new section is already divided from the original) I find that really handy when doing things like stairs or steps.
Thank you so much for this series, with woodworking in mind. Sometimes new software can be overwhelming, but just having someone walk through it with you can make all the difference between not giving it a try and moving forward. 👍
Absolutely amazing video for a beginner like me! I'm way more of a visual leraner than anything. Super clear and simple instructions. Only thing so far is at 24:24 when building a block on top of a block to make a copy. triple clicking it selects both the top block and the one it is sitting on top of. So I cannot independently select the small box and make a copy of it only.
I can already tell this series will be amazing to watch. I know you’ve taught this software at various conferences and you’re always so thorough. Can’t watch right now but I’m for sure going to watch all the videos in this series as you release them!
I have watched several intro tutorials and have spent some time learning from my mistakes. I would have had far fewer mistakes and gotten up to speed more quickly if I had watched your intro video first - you are the best April!
You've crushed it April. I'm hoping you continue this series. I could use help figuring out why some components appear to become one with other components, and, some stay separate. I went from a frustrated old fart who uninstalled the program twice before AW, to making a respectable model of my solar PV array for my building inspector after watching AW's P1 and P2!
Thank you for doing this. Just started using it a few weeks ago and was trying to "wing" it. Watched a few videos here and there but yours explained soooo much. The rotate tool was really throwing me for a loop!
You a good teacher by showing by examples. You start small and build on that small and build it bigger. I can see why you depend on this tool. Keep broadcasting!!
Thankyou so much for these videos of sketchup, I have been struggling to get stuff right for a while. Since I watched these videos about 2 weeks ago I have now designed 5 new products to build along with cut lists and layouts. Love your work
Fantastic. I teach high school woodshop and the students and I are home on lockdown. I am trying to teach SketchUp for woodworking and if it is OK will use these two videos you put out. Thank you for helping my students and I out!
Thank you April. In the Sketchup tutorials the guy talks so fast (and moves even faster) it is agonizing to try to figure out what it is that he is skipping over or blasting past. I have made a few attempts at learning on my own but it was frustrating to the point of giving up. You have produced an excellent tutorial. Thank you again.
April, these two videos are great and you could not have presented them any better. Thank You. Also, I found as you may have that every day you don’t open and actually use it, you forget two days worth. That has really made these 2 vids great. I do not use the short cuts but if you can remember them, more power to ya.John in Oregon.....Born in Waco
Thanks for these videos. I agree with everyone that you are a gifted teacher. I would love to see a #3 in this series with a little more complicated stuff and how to turn it into a real build. Thanks again so much!
I wanted to say Thank You April, for this video you created! I've been trying to work in SketchUp for the past couple of months with no good results. The problem I was having is : 1. I couldn't find out the basics on how to stop a line from drawing . 2. I couldn't even find out how to work the keyboard, together with the mouse. Some videos would show someone doing it, but they wouldn't explain anything in regards to - click once (don't leave your finger and drag) lift your finger off mouse, then when you get where you want, click again(or hit space to do over(or is it escape?). Anyway, fundamental things like this. The other videos just assume you know(I guess)? Now I can look at your video and actually have fun learning instead of quitting in frustration! Thanks again!
I just started with Sketchup last night. I watched a couple of other videos that got me started, but left me with question about some of the things that were happening as I manipulated items. Your video has answered all of those questions and also given me additional information to reduce a lot of the issues I was running into. I plan to play around a bit more and then take a look at your other Sketchup videos.
This was extremely helpful. I wish I had learned SketchUp years ago. I followed along and made a model of the computer desk I made back in December. It took me hours to design this simple desk on paper, and I made a copy of it while I watched your video. I'm planning to use SketchUp to make the plans for the desk and built-in bookshelves my kids and I are going to make over my vacation week this week. Thank you so much!
@25:16, you can also type in how far you want it as oppose to using the measure tool. To add on to that, you can type "x3", to create it 2 more times and to that exact same distance
Thanks April! I have seen plenty of SketchUp tutorials that in the end were not really helpful in a practical sense. Yours was very easy to follow, made good practical sense and lots of good practical detail and great real woodworking examples.
April, thank you thank you. im techno challenged and sketch up has me so fustrated that i quit. i asked you awhile ago and waited. these vidos and you are awesome Im going to give it a try again in building kennels for my English Bulldogs. again thank you so much for helping a rock learn. Bill
I remember when you had Jay Bates make your plans on SketchUp for you April. Now look at you April, you're teaching the world how to do it!!! You Rock!!!
Thank you. This is wonderful. Congrats on the new show with Allen, and Karn. I've used sketch up before when it first came out, but I'm just getting back to it to design my tiny home.
Very helpful, you are a wonderful teacher. I used Sketchup in the past, then decided I needed to go to Fusion and subsequently FreeCad. Both are very difficult to learn. I am back to Sketchup, it does what I want, and I can spend my time woodworking not fighting with the software. Thanks.
I gave Sketchup another go after watching this vid. I already tried learning it by watching the Sketchup tutorials linked to the app but they were horrible. After watching the first 5 mins of your tutorial, I was able to make the program do what I wanted! Nicely done. Feel free to add more in the future! I’m defo subscribing.
So of my most used shortcuts I added: D to Delete guides, H for Hide, V for View last, W for View all (its a double V), and G & Y for hide/view components or rest of model. No reason for G&Y other than they were available and next to each other. The mouse wheel will be your best friend, learn to use it.
One of the problems with Sketchup is that the free online version is somewhat different than the "Pro" version you have and a little harder to work in. Now...the older, free versions (2017, 2018, 2019) that Sketchup used to market and support were a lot more similar to the Pro version and it was very easy to follow along with anyone's tutorials and learn the keyboard shortcuts and all the tricks for modeling. Really wish they hadn't gotten away from that platform. That said, Sketchup IS still a great tool for anybody interested in designing their own projects before they start chopping wood. Thanks for the great videos, April.
April, I have watched a lot of your videos but these Sketch Up tutorials are the best I have seen! Your professional demeanor and flawless presentation have elucidated the workings of this software to the point where I am now quite confident and comfortable using it. I am much than you so using this software did not come so easily, but you have dispelled my doubts! Thank you!😊
Thanks April. I had almost given up on SketchUp. It was so frustrating to me and took me hours to complete anything. I couldn't believe it when I heard folks like you say they always drew up their projects in SketchUp first. I thought to myself, "I would never even get to the shop, I'd be at my computer constantly!" Your tutorial was awesome and I am now at least a bit functional in sketch up and have successfully drawn up the cabinet frame to my latest project. Thanks! Waiting for lesson 3!
Great video. I’m a total novice. I just spent two nights in a virtual class (6 hours total) and I got more out of your video in 30 minutes than in 6 hours. Our instructor never mentioned shortcut keys or how to delete things without going up to edit each time.
Thank you so much for this video. I just downloaded sketch up and this is great for me because it is the best video I have seen on TH-cam for sketch up and explaining the basics. You are a jewel.
Great intro to the software. It may be helpful be to explain why a component is used. If I understand correctly components are separate items. In woodworking one component could be the legs of a project, or possibly determine the amount of lumber you need by using all the measurements.
Hey April I have been watching your video's and have learned a lot from them. I'm just starting my own business doing woodworking and trying to learn how to learn sketchup, thank for the video's
Thanks April! Maybe in the future you could do a Design Tutorial vid to go with a build vid to show how the design process can help in a practical situation. All the best!
Hi, I use a trackball mouse so I can use it in any location including when travelling. It takes a bit of getting used to but worth the effort I think 👍. I sometimes forget to click edit component and think I am adding to a component. A work around I use is to select and cut the addition, click the component and select edit component, go to edit menu and select paste in place. The addition becomes part of the component.
I am retired from IBM and used to use AutoCAD, and IBM's proprietary 3D modeling systems. Now I'm enjoying my retirement years by learning how to do woodworking. I've joined a woodworking shop and they use SketchUp. So I'm thankful to have stumbled across your video. But over the next few weeks I'll be making the hard decisions on buying the hardware to support this modeling tool, as well as finding out the best SketchUp starting point for me. $300 license fee to start with is very steep for me. Any recommendations? Both on Hardware IE laptop as well as what membership or licensure to acquire to get started with.
You can use it for personal use for free. I've been using the 2017 version. When you install it do not choose try free trial, just click on Use SketchUp, it's free for personal use. help.sketchup.com/en/downloading-older-versions

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video and my Channel. Thanks for staying along for the ride.
I love your Videos.. im a Carpenter from Phoenix.. born and Raised in New Mexico on the Navajo Nation...
I build different projects when i visit back home with my Niece and cant wait to show her your channel.. shes very Smart and Hands on,she is always sewing , but has no problem and a great additude when i ask to help me with a porch or Furniture,
Thanks 4 all the Videos💯❤🙏😎
Wow! You are a natural teacher. Very clear and concise. This video is an excellent learning tool. Thank you.
Thank you!
I've been using Sketchup for 10+ years. I absolutely love it!
Yes! It's great! Thanks for watching.
@@AprilWilkerson You’re very welcome. I love your content. 😎
Thank you.
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy my channel. Thanks for watching.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching.
great intro April. Only thing I'd add is with the push pull tool once you have the face selected you can tap the control/command key to leave the original edge lines in place (so the new section is already divided from the original) I find that really handy when doing things like stairs or steps.
As a graphic artist my entire life. As things go sketch up doesn’t seem too bad! A big thanks for getting me started! 👍👍👍😎🇨🇱
As usual April nails it, her explanations are spot on, excellent video.
4 years on, and this is still a solid tutorial - Thank you April. very helpful.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
OMG! April you made this SOOOO much easier to understand. Been trying to use their tutorials and just got frustrated! Your best video EVER! Thanks!!
Awesome! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this, I've watched Jay Bates over & over, but he talks & moves so fast. Maybe after I watch your next vid I can actually follow Jay.
Glad it was helpful!
Just one more ww newbie that can't thank you enough for such a helpful video. Truly appreciated.
April you are the greatest! I messed with Free Cad to no avail. 10 minutes into this video and I can design a dog house. Thank you!!!!!
Happy to help!
Oh April, this is SO helpful! I have intentionally not used Sketchup because I wasn't confident in it! This is a GREAT intro. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
How I have been needing this! What better time than now while the whole world is shut down to learn.
Thank you so much! I was on the point of giving up on Sketchup until I found your tutorials. they are models of good teaching. Thanks again.
Great to hear and glad to help!
Awesome! I'm glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
So glad it helped!
Awesome! That's great. Enjoy the build.
Bill
1.56 M ? You go girl! I love all of your videos. I especially love watching you on the maker’s channel. So proud of your accomplishments 👏🏼🥰
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for watching.
I continue to find your level of radness on the steady climb as I discover one video after the next. You my friend, are infriggincredible!
I'm not using Sketchup for woodworking, but this has been the most helpful video for me. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful, you are a wonderful teacher. I used Sketchup in the past, then decided I needed to go to Fusion and subsequently FreeCad. Both are very difficult to learn. I am back to Sketchup, it does what I want, and I can spend my time woodworking not fighting with the software. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Love this video. Been trying to learn Sketchup but I give up. For whatever reason your modeling of woodworking projects makes sense to me.
All of the tools are still in SketchUp for web, but I agree that the change in format was very difficult to work with. I teach
You can still download the 2017 version, you just have to dig a little bit in their site.
@@skimmasmoises I downloaded the 2017 version, it still says it is on a 30 day trial.
@@howardslade267 ...exactly.
Thank you!😊
You are so welcome!
That's wonderful! Glad it helped!
Thank you a thousand times. I haven't seen one as in depth as yours. I might be able to figure this out.
Such clear and concise explanations - you're giving a technologically-deficient millennial some hope!
Thanks April :)
You are an angel! Trying to line up different components was driving me mad as a noob!
Great! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much April. Just started getting my hands dirty with this program and this is exactly what I needed!
Hey April I have been watching your video's and have learned a lot from them. I'm just starting my own business doing woodworking and trying to learn how to learn sketchup, thank for the video's
Thank you for a very informative tutorial April. You are an excellent instructor.
Thanks April! Maybe in the future you could do a Design Tutorial vid to go with a build vid to show how the design process can help in a practical situation. All the best!
You are a great teacher no doubt about it. You’ve covered so much enabling us to practice in our own time. Thank you very much from UK. Subbed!
You are a fantastic instructor!! Of course, along with all the other fabulous things you do!
Thank you for this tutorial. Hands down the most straight forward tutorial for making plans!
@@UncleSarkis Thank you, so much👍
Mein gott April!! So good. So useful. So concise. I reckon I'm pretty good with applications, but even basic competence in Sketchup has eluded me ... until now. My most productive half hour of TH-cam this year. Thank you. J.
