My favorite tip was #3 Draw the right way. Second one was #6 Master the Move Tool. All great tips and are helping me get over the initial learning curve! Thanks so much for the videos!
Thanks, I'm on my third app to try to wrap my brain around this stuff. Thanks for your vid, it looks like some of these tips will apply to other software too. Even if they don't, your approach to the software is insightful.
Rarely do I leave reviews, but I felt compelled to do so here. These videos are fantastic, the level of practical application, detail, and analogies are absolutely perfect.
Brilliantly clear and well thought out video. I watched one other video by someone else, supposedly for beginners, and the narrator went too fast and kept failing to explain things he was doing on screen. This was so much better. I particularly appreciate the way you anticipate and guard against common mistakes of newbies, and explain everything so clearly. As someone who has also developed instructional videos for specialized software, I really appreciate this! Thanks for producing these!
Really happy to hear that you appreciated our approach to teaching! We invest a lot of time and effort into our TH-cam tutorials and the full courses on our website, so we're really happy to see that you took notice!
I doubt I'll ever be able to afford the desktop version but am enjoying the free web based version, thank you for these great and easy to follow tutorials, much appreciated, you've made it so much easier to use with just a few simple steps!!
Extremely helpful! After watching a few Sketchup (Free) tutorials I struggled to draw a plan for a woodworking project. My biggest problems were sticky objects and imprecise moves. This video explained both, and I was able to complete my project.
I really enjoyed this video, I feel much better about my prospects of being able to learn sketchup, it felt daunting before. My favorite tip is the points about learning good practice now such as the zooming panning via the mouse rather than selecting the buttons. I know from learning lots of other things wrong and then having to unlearn bad habits how useful, I suspect, this tip will be, for sketchup. Many thanks.
Well Done! This is the best introduction I have seen. You cover common mistakes by explaining how the app/tool functions. The Move tool is a good example. I didn't realize I needed to be aware of whether I was grabbing a point, line, or face. Once you explained that it all made sense. Why don't other instructors point this out???
Hi there! First off, thank you so much for these tutorials. I started practicing the tips shared in this video but I do not have the make group option in my free version. Is this option no longer available, I also do not have many options on the left toolbar, please let me know if I need to turn on some settings. Thank you
If you select more than one thing (e.g., more than one edge or face), you can then right-click on the selected items and you will still have the option for Make Group. Also, the left-hand toolbar has changed recently so you will find the extra tools bhy clicking on the three dots at the bottom of the toobar and there you will reveal the extra tools. If you have any issues with either of these things, please send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will be happy to help.
The way you did this video is amazing, I super liked it. An excellent script with baby step approach and very, very, good examples, funny segments, animations, and even challenges to keep attention. I would dream every video in any topic being done the same way. Congratulation to the team.
@@SketchUpSchool Sir I am watching this video in August 2022, and the options you get on right clicking an 2d figure is different like there's no Make Component or Make Group. Please help.
For anyone else who doesn't have any optional tools popping up from the tool panel items, they're all under the three dots at the bottom of the tool panel. Click on that and they'll pop up.
Great explanation and steps, thank you. Using right-click on a rectangle for example, to 'make group' - I can't see the option. Is there another way? Has it perhaps changed in the free version? Thank you.
Great teaching video. I was feeling overwhelmed trying to figure it all out by myself. This gives me hope. Good to find out early on I need the 3 button scroll wheel mouse since my iMac came with the standard optical mouse. I'll buy one today and jump back in to the lessons.

Hello from a newbie just learning. In the video @5:02 it talks about clicking the pencil icon and a fly-out menu appears with Line and FreeHand options. But none of my tools have fly-out menus like that? Has that feature been removed form the Free version since this video was created? Also @8:16 I do not have the "Make Group" option when I right click my objects, and according to video its a pretty important feature to use?
The user interface for SketchUp Free recently changed. Now, at the bottom of the toolbar there are three dots - click on those to find the extra tools. For the Make Group command, you must have more than one piece of geometry selected (or more than one Group or Component aka "object" selected), then right-click and you should get the option for Make Group. If you still have trouble with this, send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help.
When I hover over my online free sketchup tool bar, such as the pencil or arc tool, I do not see two other hidden tools as described in your video, nor when I click the primary tools. How do I make these additional tools visible? Also, is there a help button somewhere in this version?
Those extra tools can now be found by clicking on the three dots at the bottom of the toolbar. And for help, just send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will be happy to help.
This might be good but how about the very basic basics: like how to draw a line a specific length? How to get back to 3D view (once I went to 2D I couldn't get back to being able to rotate view)? I've always drawn by hand but wanted to give technology a try. Is there a video that walks a person through the "actual" drawing. Watching this now (Feb. 11, 2024) it seems like Sketch up free has changed and removed features making this video less useful than it was 2 years ago. Would love to see an update.
The main change is that the tools that used to be revealed beneath other tool icons are now all beneath the three dots at the bottom of the toolbar. That being said, we will add these videos to our list to be updated ASAP!
There isn't a tool that allows you to do this easily. Instead, you would need to use a combination of tools and techniques to gradually model the twisting shape from bottom to top. If you'd like more help figuring out how to go about it, send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will be happy to give you some advice.
at 13:47 you say my scroll wheel will zoom in or out, but for me it rotates around the axis, and I am in 2D mode, but it doesn't seem to stay in 2D mode. Do I need to lock it or something? Thanks, super helpful so far!
You need to roll the scroll wheel (and not click down on it) for it to zoom (instead of orbit). Also, when you are in a Top Down view, you aren't locked into a 2D view, so if you accidentally orbit, you will end up seeing things in 3D. If you continue to have trouble with this step, please send us a message at team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help.
I don’t know how old this video is, but trying sketchup free today the tools on the left side are not the same as the ones you have. Do you have a newer video?
We will be updating this video soon. In the meantime, click on the three dots at the bottom of the toolbar and that's where you'll find all of the tools that you could previously see underneath each tool icon.
It seems that the free version has changed its appearance since this video was posted. The concepts are the same, except the line tool seems to not want to disengage unless you draw a box.
Question; When I start a drawing in 2d and then start moving it around in 3d, is there a way to reset the view back to the 2d image I had before I started playing with 3d? Tks in advance.
Yes, on the right side of your screen in SketchUp Free, the 8th icon down (looks like a movie clapboard with a play button) is the Scenes icon. Click on it and then click the middle house icon showing the top of the roof to jump to a Top Down or 2D-like view
This video is for the web-based SketchUp Free. For the similar video that is focused on the desktop application SketchUp Pro (which seems like what you have) you can watch this one: th-cam.com/video/PU1qWoETzfk/w-d-xo.html
A free version of sketchup was canceled in 2018, I was still using it until they disabled 3d warehouse and everything else. It really sucks because I didn't like the other free programs, actually they might be canceled as well. Are there any other free cad programs that still available as a program not in a browser?
There are two popular 3D modeling tools that are free that you might consider. One is Blender (blender.org/) and the other is Free CAD (www.freecad.org/).
TIP 6: If we click on the edge with the move, only the edge moves the the figure gets bigger/smaller. How to move the figure by clicking the edge and place it with the edge of 2nd figure?

I'm a total beginner in 3D drawing. This is the first time I tried sketchup free. When I opened it, the left toolbar is different from what you show in this video. There's no option for making arch, and when I clicked the pencil tool, there's no option for freehand (nothing shows up). Is there a different version of sketchup free or did I clicked on something wrong to make the tools disappeared? please help me😂
When you start a file you pick a template which determines whether you are working with metric or imperial units. Once you are in that file, you can't switch that setting, however, you can enter units in either imperial or metric units - they are just being converted on to the template's units behind the scenes.
so, i am working through this video while trying it out. i have my line tool and have clicked and let go and clickcked and let go at the end point, BUT IT CARRIES ON DRAWING. i cannot get rid of the line - unless i re 'deselect the pen. ?
Press the Escape key on your keyboard and it will let go of the operation in progress with any tool (so it stops trying to draw a new line with the Line Tool).
It seems that there can be an issue with some browsers where the right click option brings up a different, browser-based menu. Does sketchup have a free desktop download that last for more than thirty days? I went to their web site and the only download was the internet version and it was only for thirty days and it was the pro version. I enjoyed your tutorial, but a complete free desktop version is what I am looking for.
The last desktop version of SketchUp that was free was SketchUp Make 2017. It's no longer supported by SketchUp and is no longer offered for download on their website. But you can search Google for "SketchUp Make 2017 download" and likely find a trusted website (e.g., CNET) that has it available for download.
The function that should be there, "make group" to separate objects, simply isn't there when I right click. But when I click on the dog, I assume it's a search function and type group, then it'll offer the tool. But that seems like a very incorrect way to do it. Please help?
I'm trying to draw in 2d, and have selected the rooftop icon. When I left click, draw a line and left click again to end the line, it keeps drawing lines when I move my mouse. What am I doing wrong?
The tools are different now in 2023 it seems as when you put the cursor over the pen two options don’t appear. No option for freehand. I don’t know why they don’t come up
If you select something using the Select tool, then the Delete key should delete the selected object. If this isn't working for you, please send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help.
Extremely Frustrating I can't move anything. I click on the face (or edge, or end point) and click again in a new location. It only registers that I'm clicking on different aspects of the object or project. How can it know that I actually want to move the object rather than just selecting different objects? I feel there's a step missing. I'm using Chrome on a Windows device
point #4 is pretty disturbing for someone who had used Fusion360 or alike. No! it's not a normal way to draw a shape using mouse! It's rather weird. But I understand that sketchup is for newbies...
SketchUp does work differently than some software. However, it is not just for newbies - it's the most widely used software across the Architecture and Construction industries.
Problem: When I draw a line, I cannot get it to end unless I drag it, which in the video is a no, no. If I click to start the line, then move the cursor to the end point and click again, the line stays attached to the cursor unless I trace over the line back to the starting point. What am I doing wrong?
After you click and let go, then move the mouse, then click and let go to finish drawing the line - you will have the next line attached (as you have seen)... but if you don't want to draw a next line, press the Escape Key on your keyboard to let go of that next operation in progress.
Make Group should still be an option in your menu. So the steps to follow are: 1) Draw some geometry (e.g., a box) 2) Use the select tool to select the whole box 3) Right click on the selected box and you should see the Make Group menu option
SketchUp Free and the SketchUp Viewer are different. In SketchUp Free, you can create 3D models. In the SketchUp Viewer, you can only view 3D models that have already been created by someone in SketchUp.
how we can use vray material in lumion for more realistic render plz suggest ... as I am a SketchUp user .... 3ds max have vray material converter but I can't get vray material converter for SketchUp plz help
how to "make a group" and how to "unmake a group" are very poorly explained in the Sketchup Help files... the help instructions say to go to the "edit" menu..... There IS NO EDIT menu!!!..... how do you get to it?
To make a Group in SketchUp Free, select all of the geometry you want and then right-click on the selection and pick the option for Make Group. To Edit the Group, right-click on it and pick the option for Edit Group. Then when you are done editing the Group, click once outside of the Group. And to "un-group", you must NOT be in Edit Group mode. Then right-click on the Group and pick the option for Explode.

This is great, thank you!
You're welcome!
dang. that was well done. Great tips and much needed. :)
Glad you liked it!
thank you! very useful, well edited & well explained.
You're very welcome!
i dont see the extended tools in free... just one choice...did the user interface change?
The user interface did change recently - now you click the three dots at the bottom of the toolbar to find all the extra tools.
at 13:47 you say my scroll wheel will zoom in or out, but for me it rotates around the axis, and I am in 2D mode, but it doesn't seem to stay in 2D mode.
I should have watched this before trying it out.. I learned the hard way how important those tips are
Sorry to hear you had to learn the hard way, but really appreciate you sharing your experience with others!
This really helped me to get started. 👍👍👍👍
Really happy to hear that this video helped you out!
Thanks man, you made my life easier!!!
You're welcome!
i really apreciate your help with dowloanding this software
thank you

Who knew that "how to use the mouse" would be the key to understanding this damn app?! 🤣🤣🤣 ty
You're welcome!
Thank you for this! I'm an artist how is looking to use sketch up to make background references for my art.
You're so welcome!
It seems that the free version has changed its appearance since this video was posted. The concepts are the same, except the line tool seems to not want to disengage unless you draw a box.
Press the Escape key on your keyboard to disengage while drawing with the Line tool
Thank you.. respect hadwin channel 🙏👍
You're welcome!
Amazing video! Thanks
You're welcome!
Hey, I dont see that menu bar on the right, and dont know how to enable it??! Also your left bar is on top in my macOS version, any idea?
This video is for the web-based SketchUp Free. For the similar video that is focused on the desktop application SketchUp Pro (which seems like what you have) you can watch this one: th-cam.com/video/PU1qWoETzfk/w-d-xo.html
ITS REALLY WORKED LOL THANK YOU DUDE
You're welcome!
@@SketchUpSchool There is also Tinkercad, which is a much simpler program, but which does have it's own limitations.
Thanks for a very informative video.
You're welcome!
TIP 6: If we click on the edge with the move, only the edge moves the the figure gets bigger/smaller. How to move the figure by clicking the edge and place it with the edge of 2nd figure?
TIP 7: ditch this POS and get Blender
What would you using for 2D flat Drawing and Measurement for Dimensions? I want to make a template for CARD MAKING project to help with measurement of paper or hole or other parts of the Card
You can use SketchUp Pro together with LayOut - a separate 2D documentation application that works with SketchUp.
@@SketchUpSchool How much does 2 D and can I have grids and work in measurement of 1/8 and can I measure and record as inches fractions eg I need to draw a score a 8 7/8 inches or 8 3/4 inches can these been seen on the plan I wish I can email an example of what I am trying to
BROOO thankyou so much, this really helped and the tutorial was really easy to use as well :)

Using the online SketchUp for Schools, how do I turn off the edges/lines?
On the right side of your screen, click the icon for Styles. In your Styles panel, click the icon to Edit the style. Then click on Edge Settings and there you should be able to uncheck the box next to Edges (and possibly also Profiles) to turn off the visibility for your edges.
Great stuff thanks!
You're welcome!
I'm a total beginner in 3D drawing. This is the first time I tried sketchup free. When I opened it, the left toolbar is different from what you show in this video. There's no option for making arch, and when I clicked the pencil tool, there's no option for freehand (nothing shows up). Is there a different version of sketchup free or did I clicked on something wrong to make the tools disappeared? please help me😂
Nevermind… I finally found it in the very bottom 😅
Glad you found that the three dots at the bottom are where those tools now live.
good work king, love you
Once entered in customs, can you switch to metric ?
When you start a file you pick a template which determines whether you are working with metric or imperial units. Once you are in that file, you can't switch that setting, however, you can enter units in either imperial or metric units - they are just being converted on to the template's units behind the scenes.
so, i am working through this video while trying it out. i have my line tool and have clicked and let go and clickcked and let go at the end point, BUT IT CARRIES ON DRAWING. i cannot get rid of the line - unless i re 'deselect the pen. ?
Press the Escape key on your keyboard and it will let go of the operation in progress with any tool (so it stops trying to draw a new line with the Line Tool).
it work on my pc thx bro vеry much
You're welcome!
Im using a windows computer and I don’t see the option to group in the drop down menu when I right click. Any suggestions?
It seems that there can be an issue with some browsers where the right click option brings up a different, browser-based menu. You can try another web browser or try updating your browser to make sure it's the most current version. If neither of those things work, please send this message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help you troubleshoot further.
Please Help
I am using Sketchup Free
My space bar no longer brings my cursor back. When I hover over tool palette nothing happens. Probably something I did but I can’t figure it out.
Thank you

Happy to hear you found the video to be helpful!
¡Excelente!! ¡Muchas Gracias!
De nada 😁
I want to draw a cylinder that is 2 foot in diameter and 2 foot tall. But the inside of the cylinder I want it to be one and three-quarter foot in diameter on the top in and 6 inches in diameter at the bottom end. So when. looking at it from the outside it looks like a typical cylinder but the inside is like a funnel. I do this in sketch up free?
Yes, this is possible in SketchUp Free. If you need more help figuring out the steps, please send this message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help.
Pls recomend best skechup app for building
Does sketchup have a free desktop download that last for more than thirty days? I went to their web site and the only download was the internet version and it was only for thirty days and it was the pro version. I enjoyed your tutorial, but a complete free desktop version is what I am looking for.
The last desktop version of SketchUp that was free was SketchUp Make 2017. It's no longer supported by SketchUp and is no longer offered for download on their website. But you can search Google for "SketchUp Make 2017 download" and likely find a trusted website (e.g., CNET) that has it available for download.
Awesome tips!
Glad you like them!
So can i use sketchup free to export the model and import it into blender fix topology and sell 3D model like that? Is that ok?
The function that should be there, "make group" to separate objects, simply isn't there when I right click. But when I click on the dog, I assume it's a search function and type group, then it'll offer the tool. But that seems like a very incorrect way to do it. Please help?
Please send this question to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help
#5 Grouping. 8:14 I don't see this option in the version I'm currently looking at.
great video it helps a lot
Glad it helped
I'm trying to draw in 2d, and have selected the rooftop icon. When I left click, draw a line and left click again to end the line, it keeps drawing lines when I move my mouse. What am I doing wrong?
Press the Escape key on your keyboard to let go of the operation in progress - that will let go of the Line Tool
It's just awesome
The tools are different now in 2023 it seems as when you put the cursor over the pen two options don’t appear. No option for freehand. I don’t know why they don’t come up
In the latest version there are now three dots at the bottom of the left toolbar. Click on those to find all of the hidden tools.
my menu on the left lists the tools, but when you hover over and click on the tool, it doesn't expand to list more tools! why is that?
The latest version of SketchUp Free has three dots at the bottom of the left toolbar. Click on those to find the hidden tools.
is there any reason why DELETE key does not work in sketchup?
If you select something using the Select tool, then the Delete key should delete the selected object. If this isn't working for you, please send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will try to help.
Extremely Frustrating
I can't move anything. I click on the face (or edge, or end point) and click again in a new location. It only registers that I'm clicking on different aspects of the object or project. How can it know that I actually want to move the object rather than just selecting different objects? I feel there's a step missing. I'm using Chrome on a Windows device
Select the whole object first with the select tool, then use the move tool to move the whole object
love it
Glad you liked the video!
point #4 is pretty disturbing for someone who had used Fusion360 or alike. No! it's not a normal way to draw a shape using mouse! It's rather weird. But I understand that sketchup is for newbies...
SketchUp does work differently than some software. However, it is not just for newbies - it's the most widely used software across the Architecture and Construction industries.
How do I save work on the free browser version?
In the upper left corner click on the three horizontal lines icon to bring up the menu. There, click Save As.
@@SketchUpSchool thank you. I built the anfield stadium. It took long but with your tutorials I got it done
Problem:
When I draw a line, I cannot get it to end unless I drag it, which in the video is a no, no.
@@SketchUpSchool Thank you. It helped a great deal.
Make group does not appear on my drop down, any idea why not or has this changed.?
Make Group should still be an option in your menu. So the steps to follow are:
1) Draw some geometry (e.g., a box)
2) Use the select tool to select the whole box
3) Right click on the selected box and you should see the Make Group menu option
Does SketchUp free is the same as the SketchUp viewer, thanks
SketchUp Free and the SketchUp Viewer are different. In SketchUp Free, you can create 3D models. In the SketchUp Viewer, you can only view 3D models that have already been created by someone in SketchUp.
They must have changed the toolbar,. When I click on the left toolbar, there are no options.
Click on the three dots at the bottom and you will find the additional tools.
@@SketchUpSchool Thanks!
how we can use vray material in lumion for more realistic render plz suggest ... as I am a SketchUp user .... 3ds max have vray material converter but I can't get vray material converter for SketchUp plz help
We're not aware of any V-Ray to Lumion material conversion apps...
how to "make a group" and how to "unmake a group" are very poorly explained in the Sketchup Help files... the help instructions say to go to the "edit" menu.....
