1 - beginning in 2D helped me gain a sense of achievement more quickly 7 - shortcut for the panning tool - WHY THE HELL WAS I NOT TOLD THAT BEFORE OMG Nice video, thanks for the time saved :) Anna from Hungary
Wow, great video Alex. I think every single beginner SketchUp user should watch this video. If you're just getting started with SketchUp, save yourself months and months of frustration and follow these tips!
I have tried to learn this forever using tons of videos. Finally a tutorial that works. This would have saved me hours and hours of frustration. Thank you very much.
Thank you *VERY, VERY MUCH.* These basic things really accelerated my learning curve tremendously! I basically started last week and now have already completed the simple floating shelf for my hi-fi components. With rounded, routed doors - once I went back to 2-D and getting the shape right before pulling it was an absolute breeze!!! Most helpful concepts: 1. Mouse control - clicking and leaving the item. 2. Grabbing the edge or corner. 3. Using the press of scroll wheel to orbit. 4. Activating the hand tool whilst doing all other things.
Hi Alex, Brand new to Sketchup and a complete amateur. Really enjoyed watching in order to try and start from the "right place". Looking forward to more of your tutorials.
Excellent video. I was a CAD instructor back in the 80's and 90's and thought I could learn SketchUp just by putting in the time. That was last year and I quickly became frustrated and abandoned using the software. I am just getting back to using SketchUp and found this video with so many great tips. Looking forward to a better experience this time around! Thanks
Sketchup is one of those easy to learn and hard to master type skills. i've been using sketchup ever since I was in 6th grade, and after 8 years I can finally say that I've mastered it.
Yesterday i took learning SketchUp into consideration for my concept art career, and i guess i was lucky finding this channel. Single handedly the best format for tutorial i've ever watched, congrats!
I'm an Interior Design student and I've struggled with sketchup since the beginning, a couple of months now. To the point that I was wondering how I was going to finish my course without being able to use sketchup properly, especially cause I found my self wasting so much time!! So thank you for this tutorial! The most helpful tip was understanding edges, endpoints and faces, and applying this to the move.
Happy to hear you found this video to be helpful! If you want to dive deeper into our Video Course Library we do have a student rate (you can message us from our website and we can provide you the details). Otherwise, be sure to check out our other videos here on our TH-cam channel which should be helpful as well.
Im just starting with sketch up and this was BY FAR the most useful and incredible video. So easy to learn from this man. Concise and very very helpful info- all of it! Thanks for a great video!
You're very welcome! We are so happy to hear that you liked the video! Hopefully you get a chance to watch more videos on our channel as you continue to learn SketchUp.
Have just downloaded Sketchup2017 Make (as it is free and downloadable) until I get to grips with the basics. This first lesson of how to start in 2D I fully get as a designer, plus the 7 tips for creating, editing, and navigating the system are not with me and I made notes too so that I don't forget. The process of making a note helps to reinforce this rather than just watching and nodding your head - 10 minutes later and you have forgotten! Really impressive professional video, concise without lots of needless waffle that many TH-cam demonstrators do forget when making instructional videos.
To group stuff was the best tip for me. I often made sticky things, that was not meant to be sticky. Pushed 'Undo' several times and started over. So I am going to pay more attention to grouping and two other things covered in other videos here: layers and components. Thank you for some great tutorials.
I liked your overall aproach. Clearcut fundamental and prioritized concepts. First the simple things: learn to work first in 2D. Most impressive, the last one on 360 degrees rotation.
Really clear instructions and great voice to listen to. The thing I found most helpful which I haven't done whilst self teaching/tutorial surfing.... Was grouping things! I always ended up dragging walls around with furniture before and thus helps so much thanks! Also the 3 button mouse tricks! Before it always annoyed me that I had to go back to the side bar to select each different move tool but you helped me a lot! Thank-you!
The navigation!! thank you for explaining and also when I started my school made me start with 3d and I was frustrated, but starting again in 2d I feel more confident
Thank you soo much!! I have been trying to find a simple short key for pan tool and getting frustrated with the navigation. Online classes are hard. This video helped me a lot!!! ☺️
The grouping and orbit tips are very helpful. I've started several models and abandoned them due to frustration. I get to the roof and it goes south pretty quickly from there.
Already helpful in planning to start self guided instruction - dug out my old 3 button Logitech mouse and it still works. That alone is probably going to be a golden nugget as I am on a Mac and would have started either on the track pad or with the magic mouse.
Thanks to this video I realized I started approaching my interest the wrong way. This was what I needed to get enthusiastic about learing SketchUp again, THANKS!
Thank you so much! Finally found the right video to learn SetchUp basics! I loved every tips, especially how to use the mouse correctly. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
It's easy to tell you have learned not only the tool, but how to teach using software and producing technical documentation in an extremely efficient and effective way.
Thank you for the kind words! We have invested many years into refining how we can best teach to help our students learn in the most efficient way possible... happy to hear that it's paying off!
Thanks. Great video. Here is what I got from this, the importance of: 1. using the mouse for pan, spin, & zoom (not the icons for selecting these) 2. grouping objects
I have just downloaded your free version.and I did not have a clue where to start ,then I came across your video so I am very pleased that I did so I will be watching all your old and new video's before I try it out myself .Thanks for all this information you are handing out for free hopefully when I get better at it I can upgrade to a higher level.
Thanks! We had to update the last video to make a few things a bit more current. We agree - inferences are very important! Almost too much to cover in a short video, but we do cover in depth in our courses.
Excellent video. I took a Sketchup course focused on woodworking a couple of years ago and through neglect, forgot everything. This treatise of the fundamentals will get me back on track. As for which tip? Sadly, but very thankfully, ALL of them.
Starting in 2D and using the orbit tool in small increments were tremendously helpful. I wish I had found this video first so I did not have to work so hard to get rid of my bad habits. Thank you so much.
I always forget not to click and hold, but just to click, release, etc. This was a good reminder. And I never knew that clicking on the scroll wheel turned on the orbit tool! That is going to save me a ton of time! Thanks!
You are an incredible teacher! I have not even downloaded the software yet, but your presentation style is excellent and it definitely holds my attention.
Thanks for a great video. I think the second tip; Use the right mouse is the most helpful. I've got an iMac with a magic mouse and whilst it's great for most things it can be really tricky when using SketchUp!
I'm glad I found this video and especially the tip of "Start in 2D". It really is helpful, while getting the feeling of getting excited in doing 3d modelling in 3D it can also be overwhelming so learn it slowly but surely and knowing the BASICS and FUNDAMENTALS first will make your life easier in learning a certain skill. 😍✨
Great video. New to 2D/3d, always wanting to have a bash at Sketchup. These 7 tips I will take on board and hopefully master this wonderful art. Purely as a hobby, as I am now a retired diesel mechanical engineer wanting to remain active. Many thanks.
Hello there from Christchurch, New Zealand .....Really appreciate your Really 'Relaxed' yet concise explanations on just how use "SKETCHUP" ..... 1st Question .... We here in NZ are metric ... Where do we set ALL the Permanent Defaults Settings / Options ????? I am on 'Old Bugger' already, a retired Engineer, Toolmaker, CNC and Manual Machinist etc, am just on 70 and have used 'Other' packages before.... Being retired I needed a 'Little Something' to use at home for my Multiple Hobbies. At present busty building 'Speaker Cabinets / Enclosures' and would love to know the easiest way to do this .... Seeing the Outside and being able to 'Hide' the 'Box' while working on the Internal Baffles/Braces/ Crossovers/Speakers etc ????? Very Best to You and Yours, thanks again .... Cheers from NZ
Hi Keith - lots of good questions there. We're happy to answer them, but the best way would be for you to email us at team@sketchupschool.com. That way one of our instructors will be notified and can help you directly.
I Love the way this is explained its a bit fast for may brain but thats where the pause button comes in ...my first job its to buy me a mouse , brilliant starter Thank you
I started using SU last week and spent a week trying to follow an online tut by a great guy. BUT I had to learn all the mouse things you discussed here first. Argh. Had I seen THIS vid first, I would have breezed thru that other (very good) video). These fundamentals are sooo important. Thank you!
You're welcome! Yes, there are lots of great tutorials out there to show you the steps to create a particular thing, but the thing we really try to focus on is teaching the higher level concepts that make SketchUp easier to learn and use (and like you said, make it easier to get the most out of whatever other tutorials you find online).
Really greatfull about the scroll mouse tip, man! I spent so much time switching between navigation tools, meanwhile you do it all with scroll wheel + shift.
This was a great starting point. I am very glad I watched it. As an Autocad user, I felt a little silly not being able to do certain things. You have to think about things differently.
Great lesson! I would love to know how to structure the model and present it in construction documentations from a similar perspective to this video - concepts of achievement. Thank you.
In our Video Course Library, we cover everything you need to know to structure and present your model as a full set of construction documents. You can learn more here: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
Coming from baby TinkerCAD, which is reaaaally intuitive, I really needed these infos. SketchUp has the missing ingredients to make precise stuff happen. Cheers!
Thanks for this helpful video. I found the click and drop instead of drag point a highly needed hint. Also, I plan to do an hour or so on my test drawing learning how to move some shelves and get them where i want them.
I'm a self-taught Sketchup user and initially, I didn't use groups and the move tool was my arch enemy but then I figured out how to use them and no I can't live without them. There was nothing new to me in this video (except for the shift + mouse 3 = pan but I think I'm gonna stick to just pressing H) but I quite enjoyed it and would have found it very useful when I started
For me most definitely going back to 2D and then the don't drag tip. None of the other videos I've watched mentioned either of them, and I need to figure out how to draw something simple before I can move on to the 3D level!
@@SketchUpSchool Yep! I'm one of the self taught who rolled into this naively. Had all sorts of uneditable, unstable models. 😬 Learned alot of better practices the hard way. This and the broader set of SketchUp tutorials have tightened up my workflow skills, helped develop fundamentals.
i'm a newby and non-techy. This intro was so helpful. The mouse, the not clicking and dragging, etc. My only issue is that I have the 2020 Pro version and it doesn't look like your examples at all. None of the pulldowns of the kinds of templates options you mentioned. I just get the simple template with option of measurement as default.
Glad the video was helpful! For your other questions, please send a message to team@sketchupschool.com and we should be able to help you figure them out.
Hi Alex, thanks for this video, it is fantastic! Indeed an eye opener for me. I have used autocad & so many 3D modelling softwares in the past, from ideas to solidworks to pro e wildfire. So I felt confident and jumped directly into 3D modelling but was not really picking speed. Watching this video was really helpful. Thanks again!

A VERY good video, your lesson will help me a lot to...to get started to work with Sketchup in a easiler way! Many thanks!
You are welcome!
Outstanding! Thanks for the tips on panning and navigating!!
You're welcome!
Wow.. thanks so much. I just found myself a new interest. Beginner but will keep watching. Love the video.
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video!
Navigating with 3 button mouse is a great tip. Thanks
You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Just cane across this looks awesome, great tip summary 360 navigation tip simple, powerful and already thanking future self...!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The "create group" was a needed tips. Have had real trouble with the stickiness. :D
Glad to hear that tip was helpful!
For me most definitely going back to 2D and then the don't drag tip. None of the other videos I've watched mentioned either of them, and I need to figure out how to draw something simple before I can move on to the 3D level!
Awesome - glad to hear those tips were helpful for you!
I've given up on SketchUp twice because of many of the points mentioned here. Time to try it correctly!
Third time is a charm! 😁
Super helpful. Nav tips using the mouse controls my favorite tip here.
Glad that tip helped!
@@SketchUpSchool Yep! I'm one of the self taught who rolled into this naively. Had all sorts of uneditable, unstable models. 😬
Learned alot of better practices the hard way. This and the broader set of SketchUp tutorials have tightened up my workflow skills, helped develop fundamentals.
Starting practicing 2d then go 3D, I used to draw with auto and 12 LT looong time ago, this is my favourite tip! Thanks
You're welcome!
i'm a newby and non-techy.
I dl sketchup yesterday. Oh man, you are so helpful. I'm doing free for now. You helped me a ton. Subscribed.
Glad we could help! And we're excited to have you join the SketchUp School family!
You're very welcome!
