Welcome to the Strangest Hotel (Downs Syndrome Documentary) | Only Human

  • Welcome to the Foxes Hotel, the seaside hotel with a difference.
At this hotel all of the staff have special needs such as Down Syndrome, Autism, brain damage and mental illness. There are 54 students and all of them work their way through a tough three year placement designed to enable them to cope in the outside world and to handle a job in hotels and catering. There are thrills, spills, tears and laughter in this bold experiment which involves a steep learning curve for kids who have often come from a very protected, almost infantilised home background.

@Ben Nah, that's just the editing, he showed up to the hotel, went to his room, went to dinner and begins eating all while wearing his first tie. However halfway through the eating scene they show him with the bowtie on (which was filmed after he took the bowtie out). This type of editing happens all the time and scenes are usually made from really weird filming orders.

ilyarnllas Agreed. I feel like calling it a strange hotel is just... demeaning. Does it stand out? Yes. Does it operate like a typical hotel? Not quite. Is it the sort of place that's easy to find? No. However, I think "strange" is a bit of an incorrect word. I see the title's angle, maybe, that such a hotel might seem "strange" to so-called normal, able, neurotypical, etc people, but I think it would be better to call them ground-breaking, unique, innovative... even the oft-used "special" seems a fraction better than "strange".

Hahah, I used to work with people with Down Syndrome - they are some of the most loving people in the world!
I wouldn't say they're easy. That's crass and uncalled for. They're very innocent and quick to love. There was one woman whose parents struggled to help her learn not to hug people she's just met - everyone was her friend!
Anyway, there's never a dull moment working with that demographic. Sometimes, it was like being in a soap drama - John, who was one girl's boyfriend one week, really hurt her feelings when he danced with another girl for our "prom night." She was so heartbroken! The thing is, the other girl just asked him to dance, and he was too kind to say no!

The two women that started this are just champions.
You just wonder how many and how much quality of life these women have given to these young men and women and their families.
This should be fully supported and funded by government but as per usual its left to the private sector to pick up the pieces. Im just pleased its not the Christians doing this but good kind people with honest motives.

Because that help, in my experience, always comes at a cost of being subjected to "their" belief system.
They use peoples desperation as a platform to preach and convert while people are in need or at their lowest.
These, to me, are dishonest motives.
If still not understood I can give examples?

Would you like a lesson on what they did to my people on missions?
I have many many facts to back up everything I have said to date and so far its been you who have wrongfully accused, judged and also spread racism.

    • @elysabethpoodle6234

Yawn, yet another uneducated Christian whom could never be educated, assuming all aboriginal nations to be the same.
First you have a go at me being white, then now you try to have a broad view go of my culture; without having a clue to that identity.
Typical Christian; always having a go at others culture or identity without owning your own filthy history.
I do not have to defend my people nor where I come from. I have a history I am proud of and do not need the ignorance of a Christian; whom takes all his understanding from one backwards book, written hundreds of years ago to have an attempt at explaining MY culture to me. Hahaha How arrogant yet typical of a Christian.
I also do not blame the white man for anything I am. I think they should take ownership for their past, as should the Christians in this country but I blame no single person for where I am in life. I love my life, who I am and where I am from.
Your the one who seems to have a problem with who I am but do you as a Christian have so so much to be proud of?? Hahahaha How much death has been brought to this earth under the Christian name I wonder? How many more times do we have to hear yet another priest going to jail for pedophilia? Yeah real civilised! No wonder they fed your lot to the lions.
But lets just recap on your "Christian values" since I have known you two or three posts ago. First you have a go at me being white, then I tell you I am not white so you have a go at me being Aboriginal.
So you are racist against whites and now have the usual sterio typical racist view of Aboriginals. You must be very mixed up inside. Poor poor man.
Then you call me self hating, which I am obviously not.
However I am not surprised. To date I have always found Christians to be hypocrites and very judgemental. Two things your own bible tells you not to be but you go on and keep doing what Christians always do, whatever that may be. Enjoy

The biggest struggle with individuals with differing abilities is often teaching them social norms... I've seen some people just let others do whatever they please because they have a "disability," when, in reality, most (not all) can understand and learn what is okay and what's not.
For example, there is a lovely older woman that lives in our development. She has an intellectual disability and lives with her parents. They're all really good people! However, her parents let her to walk up to strangers (say, if the parents have friends over) and start giving them backrubs. The parents would laugh and say it's her thing - but that's not a good way to go about it!
The poor woman doesn't know she's making things awkward, and it's to no ones' benefit - she does the back rub because she wants to be kind and friendly.
She and her parents were gobsmacked when I said I didn't want a back rub, but instead invited her into the conversation to talk with us.
You have to be careful that, when helping this demographic, you're enabling them as best you can to make new friends and learn life skills.
The guy going about town commenting on women - is it appropriate? Maybe someone should teach him how to properly go to a meet and greet and hold a conversation... I hope this doesnt come off as too blunt, but if his goal is meeting a lovely lady (blonde hair, shiny teeth and all), someone should teach the poor lad! He may have not had the chance to go to a pub with normal blokes and learn the ropes... He needs those skills to land the girl!

Margaret Wilson thank you wonderful comment. People act like somehow it's okay not to expect them to have social norms and to be truthful once they're taught social rules they'll follow them better than those of us who think we're smarter than them. Usually the only reason they don't have the same social skills as everybody else is like you said they didn't get the chance to learn. Sadly nobody took the time to make him into a friend and take him with them when they were out being boys and young teens learning about girls. It'd be nice if somebody became his buddy today.

      @georgiemartin6236 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@valiantsfelinesmccarty6678 I agree with you however we should acknowledge there's different degrees of not following certain social norms such as not looking people in the eye should not be equated with giving backrubs as this person does especially when it's obvious that the reason why the person isn't looking people in the eyes is because they have a disability.

    • @valiantsfelinesmccarty6678
      @valiantsfelinesmccarty6678 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@georgiemartin6236 and we also have to be educated as people who don't have disabilities that especially like autistic people it's very difficult for some of them to look people in the eye. As you pointed out some people with disabilities don't want to look others in the eye. Since I've been on oxygen and I never smoked a cigarette a day in my life I'm very defensive because when I do see people looking at me I see judgement most of time like look at that old lady she was smoking she deserves what she got and you see it you really do I even heard one woman say see what that's what happens if you smoke cigarettes to your teenage daughter and I said no this is what happens when your mother smokes and raises you in a cigarette filled out and the mother blessed and I said this is what happened to me I never smoked so I don't like to look people in the eye I don't like to look at faces anymore yet I used to purposefully smile and try to be a positive person throughout the day because when I was young I had been severely autistic and unable to look people in the eye and communicate Etc but I was thrown by my family it was either you sink or you go into the world and the sinking was not an option. Also children who've been badly abused do not look people in the eye. A lot of times because they're afraid of what they will see they don't know and they're they're afraid if they catch that person's attention they may get beaten. People don't realize this and they may think that the person is just being you know standoffish or rude. Of course the sad part is they are desperate for friends and help but they cannot reach out for fear of something going wrong.
On the other hand sociopath's also don't look you in the eye directly but they're different a lot of times they stand out because they feel they're better than everyone else. They look a little bit to the side of you as they don't want you knowing what they're thinking and so they look elsewhere so you can't see the truth of what they're saying a lot of times. Psychopaths the really serious emotionally maladjusted born that way they will stare straight at you and lie to you so well but they can literally pass voice stress and lie detector test and you cannot even tell in their eyes if you're telling you a lie now it's funny is is I can tell when someone is lying they make a certain motion with your eyes of course I spent over 10 years working with patients who could not communicate in any way but with their facial features many of them were frozen stiff into body positions that didn't allow them to communicate other than through their facial features and if you weren't paying attention you could offend them hurt them. I did have one who would try to lie to you about certain things and it was kind of funny cuz you knew she was lying no she didn't want to go into the bedroom and go to bed she was just being nice, I always told her it was her time not ours it was her life I think she appreciated that.
It is very difficult walking the pathway of social norms today isn't it? So many things are changing and yet it still stays the same if you're different and don't follow whatever they've decided is the norm you are ostracized.

Margaret Wilson I get exactly where you’re coming from. My brother has down syndrome, and in the past he would hug random strangers and give them kisses on the cheek. My mum would firmly reprimand him for his behaviour every time. It was difficult because people would often laugh and be like “It’s okay” when it actually isn’t because not everyone likes having strangers kiss them. It took a long time, but he now knows not to do that.
