Locked-In Syndrome: Nick Chisholm

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 25 ก.ค. 2016
  • In 2000 Nick Chisholm had a stroke after a game of rugby. It left him with locked-in syndrome which means his body is paralyzed but his mind is aware and alert.
    He needs to be spoon-fed and he communicates using his eyes to spell out words on a board. It’s not the profile you’d expect for a competitive body builder. Yet Nick’s trained his body to lift weights. In this episode we spend time with Nick and his wife Nicola as he prepares for competition.

The summer of his 21st year his sister almost died from a brain tumour...but she recovered. Just a few days after she came home my son James broke his back. I don't know why I told you all this except you make me cry and smile too. Your a lovely young man and she's a lucky young lady . Along with proper food/nutrition, and he’s getting high protein and then coupling it with strengthening exercises. I really appreciate how they let him tell his story through his wife. She makes a huge effort to let him talk for himself in the interviews, and doesn't tell his story for him. That's such an important, empowering action, even though it seems small, and it would just be easier for her to talk instead of taking the time to use the board and let him speak. @@24POWERS No, absolutely no. Emotions are chemical triggers in the brain, and don't work the same for everyone. Given depression is lethal, I highly recommend nobody take this advice, and coordinate with medical professionals if you are struggling. You don't just wake up one day and decide you are going to be happy, and therefore you are. It takes significant work and understanding. This isn't a bum leg you just need to work through. This advice can cause someone to fall into remission and even pander to psychotic delusions. This is SUCH a hazardous a statement to make concerning mental health.

      @siim605 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      "A disability will never have the power to take happiness away" - I get you want to be positive, but this is such a non-clever statement. There's a thousand disabilities one can have that can take everything away from you, happiness included.

    • @queencerseilannister3519
      @queencerseilannister3519 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As Mr.Rogers said, "Part of the problem with the word 'disabilities' is that it immediately suggests an inability to see or hear or walk or do other things that many of us take for granted. But what of people who can't feel? Or talk about their feelings? Or manage their feelings in constructive ways? What of people who aren't able to form close and strong relationships? And people who cannot find fulfillment in their lives, or those who have lost hope, who live in disappointment and bitterness and find in life no joy, no love? These, it seems to me, are the real disabilities."

    • @IntoBlackHouse
      @IntoBlackHouse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It is not only horribly frustrating, but beyond claustrophobic and terrifying. I was in the ICU for a month battling guillain barre syndrome. It left my body paralyzed and I was barely able to utter a word or string together an audible sentence like "I'm hot" or "I'm thirsty". This was very scary and upsetting. I had an alphabet board similar to the guy in the video as well as a board that had basic needs the nurse could point to and I could with all my might nod "yes" to. However it was still living hell and that isn't an overstatement.
      Being able to express yourself is one of the basic needs every living thing needs. Even if you are merely being ignored or discounted in what you are saying, it strikes a chord in you where you feel upset and sort of claustrophobic as if no one understands or cares. Imagine what this is like for someone who actually cannot speak or use their body to get their point across. It's awful and I can't imagine many things worse, if any.

      @@Brandon_J He did not create disease. in the bible it states that the devil basically challenged God and said that if people had it all handed to them than it would be easy to worship him. But if people suffered and had their faith tested, then people would not have faith. Don't know if you've heard or read about the story of Job, but today we are basically a collective Job, where our faith is tested every day with things such as disease, to name just this one, and the devil is the one who has caused this. God just isn't allowed to interfere for a bit... like with Job. I am not religious but I understand that part of the biblical stories and basically this should end soon, and he will be healed. That's the promise. Based on his happiness and love for life despite this condition, if there really is a heaven, and there really is a God, I don't see why this man should be forsaken at all!

      cocaineinmyvein why because she would want to date and marry a disabled man? As a disabled woman I can tell you that comments like yours are extremely hurtful! She happened to fall for a disabled man, no different than falling for any other person. She’s amazing because she’s ballsy and she loves him for all that is. But please please... Can we please stop casting the lovers with disabled partners as angels who are somehow rescuing us. It happens with Squirmy and Grubs channel too and it makes me so angry. We don’t need rescuing thanks... just a good partner.

They are both so unique yet have such a similar style and look that most of us assume that they made the connection beforehand. You can tell in his own mind he’s not JUST disabled.. He knows he is.. His wife knows he is.. and that’s okay.. It’s obvious he struggles more than most with some of his physical limits and he gets angry and upset sometimes just like everyone else.. Along with the smiles in the video, we also saw him angry and frustrated.. I’m sure it took a lot of tears to get to some of those smiles we see and it’s not genuine to say he doesn’t recognize the gravity of his situation.. He knows what it was like before this and I’m sure misses many aspects of his older life, but I’m also sure he wouldn’t trade where he is today, with his body building and wife and children, for the world… He’s made a new normal that is better than most people’s lives in some aspects, but that is not without strife that is greater than most.. Where he’s also different than most is in the amount of mental strength he has to power through everyday, and to continue on trying to rehabilitate himself; and live his life, his way, with his wife and children.. His determination is truly commendable, his energy is brilliant, and his story is motivational..
      His physical strength is also impressive af.. I can tell by his work in the gym he’d knock me right over like he did the other buff dude 😂
