Gloria Swanson!! I’ve only ever seen her in Sunset Boulevard. Her role was really the motor of this film. She really transcended the limitations of the medium. I really couldn’t take my eyes off her. What a wonderful yet sad movie. Thank you so much. Feel free to delete this part if you wish, as my commentary is unnecessary. The wonderful part was the unconditional love and sacrifice for our children. The sad part is that stuffed old shirts (money, power, and greed-driven people) don't watch movies like this in order to be able to learn how they are destroying peoples lives because of their inflated egos. After 90 years of this movie's debut, America still has a caste system: called the rich class/caste; the upper class/caste; the middle class/caste; and the lower class/caste. One day, hopefully soon, that will all end on this Earth because we will have evolved and no longer have the need for caste systems, money, power, war, and control. I hope I see those days before I die.
I would like to see that happen too, but I'm not optimistic. Do you think it might be in the nature of human beings to try to dominate and overpower others? I'm not sure that tendency can be wiped out of the human race. Maybe it can, somehow, but I tend to think it might be necessary to modify ourselves, I mean, change the characteristics of our own species, to get rid of that kind of behavior.
@Eddie Turner I am thinking more about human self-modification. It seems possible that we might be able to change our DNA to decrease the tendency of people to be angry and destructive. Of course that sounds like a blueprint for tyranny -- turning people into contented cows -- but right now we are too aggressive and bellicose for our own good.
Sad but true. That would be UTOPIA, I doubt human nature will change but for those of us who can dream and appreciate good quality. films such as this one. Gloria Swanson had it all as well as being health conscience. SHE didn't eat white---flour, sugar etc.

Great movie . Thank you for uploading it. Many twists and turns. Great acting by all, especially Gloria Swanson. They don't tell you what happens to Jack's wife. I guess they want you to surmise that she died. A very happy ending otherwise.
What a PROFOUND movie ... and it was the very beginning of movie making. The beginning of censorship in movies begins with with post-code and never stopped.
Well, from a psychological point of view leaving the kid with his mum and parents, who love each other, is the best; as well as giving up a man, who doesn't love you, is also an honest thing to do.
I noticed Joseph Kennedy was the producer, the future President's dad. And he and Gloria were an item too.Gloria was one of the few actress's that survived the silent to talkie movies. I'm ready for my close up Mr. DeMille !
A lot of these movies from the 20s and 30s are just brutally tragic: they rip your guts out and toss 'em on the floor! I love them! Today's movies are complete pussies compared to films like "The Trespasser".
Hollywood today is absolutely NOTHING like what it was then. It may never be again. EVERYONE, even the Democrats, were FAR more Conservative and Strict towards Values than they are today.
Good story. Acted in silent movie pantomime but still good. She wore great clothing as was expected of her Jack was also very good I enjoyed this film thank you for uploading it
Edmund Goulding is well known for Grand Hotel. Attention to a very young William Holden, 19 years later he'd work again with Gloria Swanson on Sunset Boulevard.
As for the plot of this movie. One that displays the antique values and soul crushing social standards imposed on people in a world 91 years ago. “What will people think?” ruled people’s lives whether they were members of the lower classes or society elite. So much deception and shame suffered by people who failed to live up to what was called leading a respectable life. From the perspective of the 21st century and a new millennium we can look back at this kind of story and see how wrong it all was.
Yes Gloria was a wonderful actress and strong. This movie proved it as she had to make it on her own. You couldn't elope back then. Jack's father was so mean. No she ended up with Mr. Ferguson but what Marion did for Mrs. Ferguson was priceless. Love her silent pictures Male and Female 1919, with the famous lion in a cage, manhandled 1924, Sadie Thompson 1928 Oscar, this talkie, Sunset Boulevard 1950 2nd.
Bucky O'Donnàighle Yes! I saw a documentary on JPK; they fibbed & said he only produced one silent film of hers! Liar, liar, pants on fire🧐 I also watched one of Ms. Swanson’s interviews in her 60’s or 70’s; she denied NADA! She will always be my heroine & my idol.😘💕🙋♀️ ‘
I much prefer this version to the remake with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, surprisingly so since it's BD. Loved this ending. The father Merrick was quite obnoxious, good acting. Gloria Swanson was great and particularly touching with cute, little Jacky. Thanks for the upload.
A bit of Gloria Swanson trivia - in the late 1970s, she appeared on Parkinson together Olivia Newton-John and Barry Humphries character Dame Edna Everage. Dear old Gloria had no idea who Dame Edna was and commented later, that she said "that woman has big feet." Everybody fell around when Dame Edna told Gloria that she was jealous of her, "because I've never had a silent period." Gloria could only stare at Edna.
Although having heard of Gloria Swanson - I’d never seen her act in a movie. But the one thing I could not believe about this movie was that on more than one occasion I was tempted to delete it from my collection of movies I’d saved on TH-cam to watch later. And although finding very enjoyable the scene at 4:00 - 4:53, I felt the movie would not get much better than that scene. Boy was I wrong. As I sat and watched it - all thru it I was thinking to myself - I can’t believe I was about to delete and not watch this movie. A good one.
Originally released in November 1929. Gloria's "talkie" debut (although a silent version, with synchronized music, sound effects and intertitles) was also released at the time).

Great movie . Thank you for uploading it. Many twists and turns. Great acting by all, especially Gloria Swanson. They don't tell you what happens to Jack's wife. I guess they want you to surmise that she died. A very happy ending otherwise.
I love Gloria Swanson. She was a great actress
I wanted to see this. Thanks for posting.
She wore great clothing as was expected of her
Jack was also very good I enjoyed this film thank you for uploading it
Marvelous Gloria Swanson.
Edmund Goulding is well known for Grand Hotel. Attention to a very young William Holden, 19 years later he'd work again with Gloria Swanson on Sunset Boulevard.
Not the same Holden. William from Sunset Boulevard would have been 11 in 1929.
No matter what anyone says young love is the best love. I have old love and I've been lonely for years.
Ugh the story! I love it! ❤ the ending was a little abrupt but I still love it 😊
Terrible ending because it means Grandpa won, after all.
Plot twist;
The child is Charlie Chaplin's
You have the VERY BEST Channel. Thank you.
Thanks! May the Sauce be with you.
That was AWESOME!!!
The hardest thing in the world is to have to leave your own child!
Joseph P Kennedy presents.....JFK's father produced this? Interesting.
He had his fingers into many things.
IS THIS THE RESTORED VERSION???
Bucky O'Donnàighle Yes! I saw a documentary on JPK; they fibbed & said he only produced one silent film of hers! Liar, liar, pants on fire🧐
I also watched one of Ms. Swanson’s interviews in her 60’s or 70’s; she denied NADA! She will always be my heroine & my idol.😘💕🙋♀️

Yup! They had an affair that lasted for a while.
I dont think its the same
I much prefer this version to the remake with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, surprisingly so since it's BD. Loved this ending. The father Merrick was quite obnoxious, good acting. Gloria Swanson was great and particularly touching with cute, little Jacky. Thanks for the upload.
I love how people conveniently died to make life easier for other people in these old movies.
@cosmicVox13 Not very realistic. If you're waiting for someone to die to make your life easier you've got a long wait.
A good one.
The scenes with the little child(ren) in this film are exemplary! I wonder how they could get them filmed
Originally released in November 1929. Gloria's "talkie" debut (although a silent version, with synchronized music, sound effects and intertitles) was also released at the time).
