Mary Astor is a superb actress, Astor is one of the finest actresses who've ever graced the screen, She's particularly radiant in this picture, Lilyan Tashman is always charming. This was a splendid story with the ending I had hoped for.
My grandmothers favourite actress. My grandmother died in 1944. I never got to meet her, I was born in 1960. For some reason Mary Astor has a special place in my heart because of my grandmother that I never got to meet. I loved her in Dodsworth, great movie.
This is a really good drama starring Mary Astor 💕 Kenneth MacKenna ⭐️ and Lilyan Tashman 💕. Tommy Conlon as the son is great along with Hale Hamilton as Mary’s loyal friend. I was fortunate to find this one while searching for Lilyan Tashman films. Thank You for this one! 😉
Parents can hurt their children by their indiscretions . Especially when there’s perfect harmony, sudden collapse of trust, also destroys their self worth along w/ the children’s identity.
Happened to me & I’d be lying if I said I got over it. But I do forgive my mother. She can’t help she was a hot little number from a small village. We’re human, our parents make mistakes too.
If only there were half the concern shown in this film toward the kids of couples that argue or want to separate or divorce today.... we would have a different world already today.
00:38 Tiffany Studios, sometimes known as Tiffany-Stahl, was set up by actress/producer Mae Murray and her director John Stahl. The year this film was made, 1932, was Tiffany's last operating year before it went under.
Lilyan Tashman died just 2 years after this film at the young age of 37. She started out as a young vaudevillian teen performer & a star at 17, she worked on the Broadway stage in the Ziegfeld follies for 2-3 seasons. Her happy last marriage was to actor Edmund Lowe who survived her. I only recently found Ms Tashmans films on TH-cam & found her really an interesting actress.
Wow that's young and such a great scarlet woman here but not 100% hateable...I believed her when her face is in awe of them standing up to her bully husband who cheated on her dishing it out but couldn't take it. Her mistake was stalking just him and should've went on cruises to Europe or has a dance instructor like they did in so.manu films hehe. 37 way to young thanks for sharing.
Lilyan Tashman, who played Valerie. A really fine actress in her day. Unfortunately, she died at the age of 37 or she likely would have had many more fine movie performances.
I knew that blond was trouble the minute I saw her! Men can be so stupid sometimes! It was a sweet movie though. Mary Astor was so beautiful and such an awesome actress. I would watch her in anything! Thanks so much. 🌈🌈🌈
Excellent movie dealing with forgiveness, I hope some watching this in a similar predicament will learn something from it. Wonderful performances from Mary Astor and her colleagues.
"Remember Freddy, a clever lie is better than a clumsy explanation." I adore Mary Astor, I got to meet her twice and still have her autographs I got. Kenneth MacKenna was marvelous and I wish he worked in films more.
And just think - none of this would happen today. Thanks to sites like Tinder, “romance” or flirting are something of the past. Young women today cannot remotely relate to a story like this. This is sad to me :(
Too bad Mary Astor didn't wanted to become a major star, yes, it was her decision, and she always played a second violin. This movie is rare exception. Beautiful and talented.
That blonde was after him hook line and caught him. And she is married as well. Her husband is probably a wonderful husband. Tramp 😄 May should have confronted Freddie, more by telling him she arrived to the house and saw and heard that woman, if she did, he wouldn't have went on with that woman. Stupid ! Freddie better be thankful that she forgave him. Great movie. I love Mary Astor all of her movies were awesome. She was a wonderful actress. She started her career in the silent era of movies. I miss wonderful actresses like Mary
Wow, Astor's expressions when he lied to her starting @42:39 was incredible acting. One could see and feel her disappointment that she knew the man she loved and trusted was lying. All actresses and wannabe actress should watch and study her movies. My only problem with this film was the constant music. To me it was distracting during dialog between the actors. I love classic movies, but this is the first I've seen whereas music was constant throughout and it annoyed me. Perhaps because Mary didn't need background music. The role she played didn't need to be enhanced!
Well this film must have affected me as I was upset at the husband for cheating sans consequences and the wife for staying because of the child. It was realistic n brought forth emotions which rates this a 10.

What a great movie, I thought I'd seen all pf Mary Astor's films. If you read her life story it's heart breaking like this film without the happy ending. Torn apart in court and so much scandal in custody fight over her daughter I believe. "In 1936, Astor's career was nearly destroyed by scandal. She had an affair with playwright George S. Maybe because of "Meet Me In St.Louis" I've always felt Astor didn't have the seductress sex appeal for Maltese Falcon. Now had Lilyan Tashman not died young... That's one Mrs.O'Shaughnessy Sam Spade would have taken the fall for!
I really was expecting to hear a gun shot when they went to find dad. He went and blew his head off for being a fool. But, these are the golden age where everything is solved in a minute and people fall in love forever.

Always somebody cheating in these pre-code movies. I've watched quite a few in the last several days. Having a mistress was treated as though it's the norm. This one was a little better, but I know that my dad or his father wouldn't entertain the likes of "Valerie" for 2 seconds. No "one drink and then you go." She'd be kicked out right then and there - wouldn't get past the front door.

A bit slow and predictable. Thank goodness for the female performances. An unsympathetic role for Tashman but she handles it with her usual style. In movies with more glamourous actresses, like Lilyan & Jean Harlow, makes Astor seem matronly. I begin to understand why Hollywood relegated such a fine actress down to second tier.
Puh-leez, Lilyan. What a hack. Myrna Loy masterfully portrays the seductrous in "Animal Kingdom," a PF pre-code gem. And, Lilyan, Jodhpur boots without socks?
