Lil Baby Is Lost And Confused

  • Generally speaking, they say that what goes up, must eventually come down. But in the case of Lil Baby who once looked to be in pole position to replace Drake, it seems like things are spiraling out of orbit at an alarming rate.
For a window of around three years, the rapper lesser known as Dominique Jones had more momentum and combined goodwill than any other artist in the field. Commended by oldheads and seen as the leader of the new school by his contemporaries, Lil Baby might not have meaningfully entered the game until 2017, but he wasted no time in becoming one of the biggest names in the culture.
And after a stellar mixtape run, the release of 2020’s My Turn wasn’t just critically acclaimed and commercially lucrative, but had one of the most fitting album titles we've seen in a while.
Suddenly, Baby was on such a pedestal that he found himself performing at the FIFA World Cup, something usually only reserved for megastars. Putting Baby in front of the eyes of 2 billion televisions globally. But now there are now concerns over LIl Baby’s staying power due to a combination of persistent factors, and now the public that elevated him is begging him to stop rapping. So what happened?

The people that had potential to replace Drake were juice wrld and xxxtentacion. They had the versatility and creative ability to replace Drake and carry the genre forward. Unfortunately both passed

They were doomed to meet an early departure. Neither of those guys had the information and guidance Drake was privy to when Drake first came into the rap game. Juice world surrounded himself with criminals and got wrapped up in gang culture he had nothing to do with. X life was filled with turmoil and reckless behavior. They had no chance of becoming the “next Drake” because they lacked proper guidance

People saying that Lil Baby was the heir to Drake were delusional. Drake's versatility is what makes him 1 of 1. Lil Baby is an extremely one-dimensional artist, just like the overwhelming majority of rap artists in this era. Social media and streaming have given these artists an unnecessary boost to their careers. Unfortunately, the 2000s and early 2010's was the last era of music being the sole focus for the artists, now it's about everything but the music.

It sounds like a guy talking fast with drums in the background that make no damn sense. The "beats" (I use that word lightly) very often don't even have a bass line, which is a joke lol. Lil Baby just found out he had a formula that worked and then just decided to run it into the ground. You have to reininvent yourself but it's a slippery slope because if you do it too much, people will clamour for the old you and you might lose what made you you in the first place. Lil Baby can't wake up tomorrow and start making music like JPEGMAFIA. His core audience don't like that music. The thing is, Baby has a sound which is so easily replicated and saturated, he can't continue making the music he's making or he becomes stale. McDonalds can continue pushing Big Macs because that is their signature they pioneered and no other fast food brand makes it/markets it like McDonalds. Baby really doesn't do anything the best and he came in an Atlanta wave pushed by Thug, Future, Gucci, Migos, and even 21 was here before him.
Baby doesn't have to make entirely new music but he should try working with new producers to catch new flows. One thing about Future is he always tapped in with an array of producers. He started with Lex Luger and then Zaytoven but then he worked with DJ Esco. When Metro started catching heat, Future worked with Metro and made heat. More recently, Future's last album had hits from ATL Jacob. So even when Future is having similar thematic elements, the soundscapes are different and modern which makes his songs interesting and not as repetitive.

After watching so many of these "new rapper who fell off" videos it makes me wonder if maybe part of the problem could be that as soon as a new rapper appears who is good, everyone immediately hails them as the "savior of rap." I know it at least goes as far back as people calling Vince staples the next 2pac. It's a lot of both pressure and praise that are given to people who aren't old and experienced enough to handle it. Unless you're Kendrick, but that's a pretty high bar.

I haven’t listen Kendrick since damn because his music isn’t fun to listen too. Conscious rap is cool to listen once in a while but I manly listen to music for enjoyment not to have to sit and focus on the lyrics. I wish for something like GKMC again.

    • @darkskinwhite
      @darkskinwhite 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

50 still got it, you just aren't interested in the story anymore. Happens to everybody whether their music quality falls off or not.
This is why transitioning to other mediums allowed 50 cent to continue his relevance in Hiphop & pop culture in a way we rarely see even though interest in his music isnt there (which is why he doesnt make the effort by the way).
Rappers hate when people lose interest & move on even if they feel they still got it, but its actually one of the most beautiful things about Hiphop. Hiphop celebrates people from the bottom & lifts them up, turning nothing into something. They will stick around once or twice to see what you have to say from up there, but then once that initial story arc is over they move on to the next person & do the same thing which allows Hiphop to make so many successes.
Of course though, somebodies story doesn't end just because they're in their 30s & rich, but the danger & suspense dies down. the rags to riches/something from nothing part of the story that rap music is built on is over, they made it. so they either fade away, or transfer to another medium that's more applicable to the current part of their story which allows the audience to keep up & retain interest in them. The thing that made 50s transition so successful is he saw the writing on the wall & didn't really fight it. He transitioned while he still had the people's interest. That's why is isn't musically relevant, but yet is as relevant at any Hiphop figure at that stage has ever been.

As many are pointing out in the comments there was never a comparison between Lil Baby and Drake. Beyond Drake arguably being one of the most versatile artist's ever, he is also a genuis at understanding the changes within Hip Hop and adapting his sound and relationships within the music industry accordingly. Lil Baby on the other hand is a symbol of modern Hip Hop, very one-dimensional when it comes to their scope and range within the genre, as well as being very ephemeral and short lived. With the ephemeral nature of their careers coming from the fact that all his songs kinda sound the same, and Lil Baby doesn't have the vocal range or creative talent to switch up once his fanbase' interest in him plateaus. My last point would be that if you look at the big three in Hip Hop, none of them are gangster rappers. Why would this matter you ask? Well, being a ganster rapper in Hip Hop severly limits the option of your creative output, which keeps your core fanbase very static, and makes it harder to branch out into other genre's without it affecting the perception of how authentic you are, which can hurt your career. Even people who aren't fans of Hip Hop can listen to Drake, which helps him appeal to a larger audience, the same can't be said for Lil Baby. Drake can also more freely experiment with his sound and look, without it damaging his career, whilst a gangster rapper is relegated to a set of predefined choices, the stepping out of which will bring his authenticity and streetcred into question, which for a gangster rapper is the very foundations of their career's.

I’ve always believed that Lil Baby was the most overrated rapper of all time. I don’t know how he brainwashed everyone into liking his music. His interviews are cool though.

I really appreciate the research used in this video. I’d say that QC also use a lot of in-house producers and engineers so it’s quite possible that Baby will end up “sounding the same” because they’re so used to crafting the similar sound/concept for him. I’d like to see QC allow him to use a wide variety of producers such as Metro, Pi’erre, Pharrell, Madlib, 808 Mafia, Working on Dying or even producers in the rap/rage scene such as Starboy, Outtatown or Art Dealer. This will sort of allow him to break the glass ceiling on his rapping capabilities. It’s not all lost. But hey, labels do want to save money and this may not be in their best interest.

What people fail to realize is rappers like lil baby are technically underground niche rap. Any commercial pop success should be seen as a win, I think even lil baby doesn’t realize this. Most of the time these guys go viral due to street beefs and online antics.

We’ve undergone a radical cultural paradigm shift over the last 5 years, it being the most dramatic within the last 2-3. Nothing is the same. Everything is different. This goes beyond hip-hop. This world we live in is more different than anything we could have imagined and it’s evolving at an exponentially increasing pace. This rapid constant cultural and societal change is unprecedented. Today is nothing like yesterday and tomorrow isn’t even fathomable.

All he gotta do is make good music, and it’s as simple as that, it doesn’t get more simpler than that, I’m a Dababy fan and even I started to notice that he started doin the same shi over & over again but now he just tryin to make good quality music(he knows that he got to comfortable so he just went to the drawing board/the basics, which is making good music)

Phase early in his career.. usually when people do the feat phase.. it’s after they have established their career..then the drake phase.. he got that early… lil baby my favorite.. but went through phases of his career that guys don’t go through until they’ve been in the game for a while… the duo phase .. but man he’s running it up

I was at an Ace Hood show (on accident) at a 800-1000 person venue and there was about 6 or 7 people total inside the theatre . Seriously not sure if they sold a single ticket or got anyone at all to pay at the door. Only reason I was in there myself was bc I was asked to photograph the performance for a weekly entertainment/ music mag. I’m not sure they ended up even using the pics from that night after the sparse turnout but I definitely still have them all on a hard drive. Shits crazy…

Ace Hoods music right now is way better than his music back then but as you said, once you're labelled as "fallen off" it doesn't matter.
