I purchased a left hand Black Wolf from you about a year and a half ago. I was initially shocked at the loud cracking noise. Gave the string a few more twists to increased the brace height by 3/4" more than the recommended setting and voila.....silent. No need for any dampeners or puff balls. I would recommend new owners to spend more time exploring with brace height before committing to add ons. I use a basic plastic arrow rest. No add ons at all. This is a high quality carbon bow that is supposed to be light in hand. Enjoying it heaps and shoot it nearly everyday.
hey! so i dont know if you still have the bow after almost 8 years, but can you tell me how the bow holds up over time? What kind of poundage were you shooting and how does it hold up to rough handling?
I bought one of these based on your previous review... I own 6 trad bows and it is the quietest of all of them, the only thing I can think of is that the customer may have been using severely under-spined arrows which were striking the riser or shelf upon release. Mine is whisper quiet with only string silencers added
Just bought the bow and fitted a fast flight string a what a noise.Replaced the string with B55 set the the tiller for split finger added a couple of stringer silencers and its now very quiet.
Just received mine, I put the little rubber dampeners on it. It is a fantastic bow but it also is the loudest bow I have ever owned. Like plucking a base guitar.
Hi Steve, In all fairness I have the black Wolf and yes it is noisy compared with a one piece trad recurve, Try a bearpaw Redman !! First never stick a Dacron on BW that like wooden wheels on Ferrari...... :-( Flemish spliced FF and beaver puffs on the string is the best string damper for the BW Now most important is the contact points on the ILF, the limb bolt add a bit of sticky felt on the contact side of the bolt head. Then check the contact between the back of the limbs and the riser add same felt sticky on the two little lines made by the limbs.... Quite as mouse :-) BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD NEVER PUT A DACRON STRING ON A BLACK WOLF!!!!! You just lost about 15 FPS
To me the bow was shooting/sounding fine with the low stretch string. It only needed some cat whiskers. Take the two cat whiskers and cut them in two so you have 4 pieces. Put two on the top limb and two on the bottom limb measure from the string loop down 9" and 14" same on the other limb or some where close. I don't think the owner had a clue or the other shooters just how quite that bow was. You did a very good job trying to help this guy out good for you.
shooting split finger on a stock setup = v.quiet, but I've seen (and heard) one of these make huge noise shot 3 under with the stock settings. Tuning..is all it needs Mr Customer.
After taking ownership of the RCX 17 "Black" I can confirm they are quite a loud bow when compared to my Mybo Elite. But they are a beautiful bow to shoot and the way they launch arrows is unlike anything I've shot before. The noise doesn't bother me as I listen to loud music. If it puts off those shooting beside me, well it gives me an advantage.
I should point out I live in a country where hunting is illegal so these bows are purely for shooting at a "target" so noise makes no difference for me
Both my GF and I shoot Recurves and can't understand why the customers experienced Archer friends didn't know how to silence a bow. Plus if you are going to spend that much on a bow get a decent rest and a plunger.
I bought a W&W Black Wolf from you, it came with a W&W string that gave it the correct brace height around 7 - 7 1/2 I bought a replacement string at 62" but it puts the brace height to 8". What string do you recommend to give the correct BH...I can't seem to find W&W strings any where in the UK Thanks
its different tone of string because there's more tension, tone is higher but it should be easier to make it even more quiet with cat whiskers, because cat whiskers can cancel higher frequency vibrations more efficiently.. Also you could try to put some tape-like silicone rubber spacer, thin one 2-3mm where string meets curve so it just touching string maybe little bit more, but it will not last for long. I'm not an expert in this field just adding some thoughts to experiment bucket.
Grizzly Jim once from Merlin Archery, loves the bow but described it too perfect. He loves his bow with the feel of feedback. He chose the other bow over Win&Win Black Wolf because he wanted more feel like vibration and noise. What you just did to Black Wolf Silencing, did you like it or hated it over bare? All the silencing accessories added, did it affect your accuracy and long distance shot accuracy? I like to try all those added, the only thing I have is whisker on my string.
I'm torn between buying one of these or an American made custom takedown. I'm erring towards this, looking for a take down hunting recurve that is pretty much the best you can buy. What do you think?
My 60"black wolf is quiet. All I have are cat whiskers. It's much quieter than my Martin Jaguar and it shoots oh so sweet after watching this video I'll make it even quieter
Manufacturer claims 7-7.5" brace height for Black Wolf. Any other setup voids warranty as per the user manual. If you use higher brace heights how is warranty affected? Also a second question where I need your expertise: how many full tiller bolt turns are safe from the maximum poundage setup (from bolt fully in)?
Warranty is fine. It is more about trying brace height to see how it changes the noise. On my target bow it did make a difference in noise. I would wind the bolts out completely then wind in a few turns. I have done three turns out for one customer but I would not go any further
Hi Steve, could you tell me what plunger and arrow rest you used to set up the bow, That is if you set it up...... great video and keep making them. Greetings from Germany
That's pretty quiet stock........esp given that you are in a confined space where any noise will bounce back at you.....but nice to see you would pander to such a picky client.
Hi Steve, if your customer thinks the bow is noisy, lucky him/her didn’t buy a Hoyt Buffalo. Mine is up for sale, because I have tried everything to get it quiet. In my opinion the buffalo is a poor quality bow, and at $1100 it hurts. The only thing I could hear was the nock clicking on then pinging on the release , and yes a bit of string vibration. Other than that it’s very nice. Just puffs is all that was needed. You got one in 40#. Regards Robert.
You literally did EVERYTHING ass backwards. Dacron is crap! I don't care how long you have been shooting recurves or archery in any way, everything you did to "quite" this bow was backwards. You never put a dacron string on a modern bow, this was a string material developed in the 50s or 60s and is ancient technology now, it is only meant for vintage bows that do not have reinforced string tips. I am not exaggerating when I say this but I would rather sell the bow and get another if I had to shoot dacron, it robs the bow of speed immediately (possibly up to 15 fps) and since it has tons of stretch it adds an irritating vibration and buzz throughout the bow, not pleasant at all. Along with that it is a thicker material and the strings can sometimes come out too thick and affect arrow nock fit causing other tuning issues and noise. The confusing part is that you didn't twist up the fast flight string to increase the brace height but you went and jumped immediately to a shorter dacron string to achieve that, it makes no sense. I put some velcro strips on the string grooves of my Black Wolf limbs and have some small wool silencers on my 12 strand 8125 string on my Black Wolf with a very normal 7 3/4" brace height and it is literally the quietest bow I have ever shot with 9 grains per pound arrows.
Normally I very much like your videos and learn a lot. To my thinking this one has missed the mark. The customer claimed the bow was noisy and made a point that other experienced archers agreed. You set up the bow and shot it. Clearly the bow was quiet. Use of additional silencing techniques was unnecessary and failed to identify the basic issue. The customer might have a different brace height, different draw length, different arrows or some other factor causing noise was involved. I have had a similar issue with one of my bows. I got a sharp crack sound when I shot it. A friend of mine shot it and it was quiet. He even shot with my arrows and with the same set up. The only difference seemed to be a draw length 2 inches shorter. In any case, I doubt your customer is satisfied. The basic issue was not identified or fixed. Of course, the customer also shares blame on this. Ideally he should have returned with the bow to demonstrate the problem. Maybe a silencing device would have been appropriate. I think it is more likely that the brace height or arrows needed to be changed.

OK Wooi Jin Ong.
NOTED NOW :-)
that's where I'll start, if I ever afford to indulge myself with purchasing this mini marvel
hey! so i dont know if you still have the bow after almost 8 years, but can you tell me how the bow holds up over time? What kind of poundage were you shooting and how does it hold up to rough handling?
I love that this vis is all about silencing, but it's the noisiest video I've seen on TH-cam :) Thanks for your really helpful advice though
· 😉
yeah !
Your vid started out at a lively 152 vivace tempo and slowed to a soothing 96 allegro:) I love that bow.
Good video. If only you could add some cat whiskers to your roof. The sound of dripping water was the ultimate test of my patience!
It was a drip, from the rain. Bugger
LOL!

Nice video, thanks. It would be great to add a final cut of the video playing the stock bow and then the silenced bow. Back to back. Thanks again.
Yeah, a final cut, DIRECTLY side - by - side.
Better to compare directly, than trying to compare many minutes apart
Just bought the bow and fitted a fast flight string a what a noise.Replaced the string with B55 set the the tiller for split finger added a couple of stringer silencers and its now very quiet.
I found the bow quite noisy at first, but adjusted the brace height from 7" to 8" and it is instantly silent!

My thoughts exactly plus he probably put a little bit of buzz back in the bow. Dacron is something I would only shoot when the world ends.

I don't think the owner had a clue or the other shooters just how quite that bow was. You did a very good job trying to help this guy out good for you.
I agree, but I wanted to try each thing. limbsavers do take some vibration out.
keep comments coming. Thanks for helpful suggestion

First time I`ve seen the difference to shooting a bow in steps using silencers > Thank You !!
Riser is 17". I would have loved to test out a before and after through my chrono on that bow.
Yep true that !!!

After you had put all the dampners i would have tried the fast flyte string again!!!!!!
I second that. Aye!
That room certainly isn't quiet, that tapping was doing my head in.
Both my GF and I shoot Recurves and can't understand why the customers experienced Archer friends didn't know how to silence a bow. Plus if you are going to spend that much on a bow get a decent rest and a plunger.
I use a tiny rifler file to tune nocks , reduces some ( knock snap ) .

Mine is pretty loud even with wool puffs. It is louder that my reflex deflex without wool puffs.
A sound video with a constant knocking, and a vacuum cleaner going off lol. But yeah that bow is quiet
Also it sounds really load when you nock the Arrows...... is the serving too fat for the Nock ???
This is a cause for noise on the arrows release

Is the black wolf popular? I really want to get a couple of these for my partner and I~
Bow was already pretty quiet and dacron made a difference. A semi performance carbon bow is not going to be completely silent.
Really interesting. Thank you.
Do you still sell the Black Wolf?
great vid.

When do you think you will get the 2018 pse bows in and do reviews?
preview done. November for most of the line
Archery Supplies just saw that one. Looking forward to the new videos
I will take it if it is for sale at a used bow price
Good job 👍
I use this bow...it excellent
Most of the sound is the harmonics of the string .....

To me, the arrows landing in the target are noisier than the bow.
In the end ...... yeah, me tooo.
Remember children, don't be like Steven. Use a finger tab. :D
Courent arrows
7 3/4 7 5/8. Recommended 7-8
Sorry, its a good video but: the dropping sound distract my nerves ... It has no worth for me cause of the dripping sound, in sound realations.. ;-)
God, how much more background noise can you put in your video.
lol

James Kelson Awfully certain for a man who was not there, and your comment makes no sense.
SORRY?

EVERYONE who HEARD THAT is now WONDERING what the @#$%^ you were doing STANDING DOWNRANGE FROM A COMPOUND BOW BEING SHOT :-O !!!

Your analogy to a bowstring strung taut on a bow being equivalent to a STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT was EXCELLENT - nicely done !
Many people simply DON'T WANT to believe that bows can & do RESONATE - JUST LIKE MUSCIAL INSTRUMENTS !
IS vibration WANTED? Far far from it !
CAN vibration be DESIGNED-OUT ? Yes - but often at the cost of SACRIFICING WEIGHT or SPEED (POWER) :-(
CAN vibration be REDUCED or "ATTENUATED" (that's what one DOES with VIBRATIONS - one ATTENUATES it) - yes - but ALSO at a COST (NOTHING is FREE) :-O
- You need to add some sort of SHOCK ABSORBER - in Engineering Mechanical Systems comprised of a MASS, a SPRING and a "DAMPER", the "DAMPER" IS this "shock absorber"...
-- MASS is the mass (material, weight) of the bow, and due the SHAPE of this mass, will have a certain NATURAL FREQUENCY of VIBRATION;
-- SPRING is the bowstring, and provides the STORED ENERGY which gets FED into the bow (mass), causing it to VIBRATE at the NATURAL FREQUENCY;
-- without any DAMPING (other than the combination mass-plus-damping due to the MATERIAL properties of the BOW) , the bow will "ring" and take seconds
(in a bad case over 15 seconds!) to gradually die out this vibrating or ringing is actually AMPLIFIED by the SHAPE of the LIMBS (who knew !)
--- narrower, rounder, thicker (tapered) limbs have LESS SURFACE AREA, and therefore (like a SMALL "speaker cone") generate LESS NOISE: but
--- wider, flatter, thinner (untapered) limbs (like my 1974 50# Darton Magnum) have MORE SURFACE AREA, (larger "speaker cone") generate LOTS of LOUD NOISE :-( :-O
- WITH damping - adding little rubber knobs which DEFORM MORE the FASTER the bow limbs move, and ABSORB these vibrations and CONVERT them into HEAT (believe it or not) :-O
- but WITH that damping you're also adding MASS to the LIMBS - limbs which need to MOVE FORWARD as FAST as they CAN in order to THROW the arrow forward.
-- MORE MASS... SLOWER limb, SLOWER ARROW, but QUIETER vibration.
- You can ALSO add STRING silencers as well; they too DO "vibrate", but at a LOWER natural frequency, so I promise you, the "NOISE" you're hearing most of the time is a HIGHER-FREQUENCY "slap" of string-on-limb, translating into the SURFACE of the LIMBS, which are vibrating at a higher frequency more in the range of HUMAN (and DEER) hearing, so THAT"s what we need to get rid of FIRST ;-) ...
:-|
It's a TRADE-OFF
For many of us, these little stick-on dampers are MARVELOUS and WORTH EVERY PENNY
- the additional MASS is comparatively SMALL;
- if you place them closer to the RISER (NOT the tips) you STILL get VIBRATION DAMPING, but with LESS LOST SPEED (try it - you'll SEE)
- if you place them on the OUTSIDE (BACK) of the limb, then the limb PUSHES AGAINST them on release, making them stay on BETTER :-O
- if you place them on the INSIDE (BELLY) of the limb, then the limb PULLS AWAY from them on release, making the eventually COME OFF :-O
TRY THIS:
POSITION the knobby-style limb dampers (even LARGE ones for single-piece COMPOUND limbs) about 2 inches out from the RISERS, and see what happens :-)
