- Do you want to shoot your traditional bow more accurately? Here’s a complete breakdown of the “Instinctive” shot process that applies to every shooting style and is an absolute must for every archer no matter which bow or method of aiming you are using!
Finally Finally a video that explains how I shoot when I shoot good. I'm a beginner at the longbow, but I've had one for years. I rarely use it to hunt because I couldn't figure out what I was doing when I shot well. That may sound dumb, but this video and the comment Jt made about holding your hand up made the bell ring. After switching from trad to compounds years ago and back to trad it took me three years of shooting a recurve every day to finally nail my process down (raw instinctive) and feel confident enough to hunt ethically. And I mean 3 years!
I believe that for sure brother, I shot back and forth for probably twenty years and never knew anything about a process, I just started taking mental notes of what I did to make a good shot and started practicing repeating that over and over until it became second nature!

Finally someone that actually took the time to help out people who just can’t shoot a high poundage bow. I completely separated my shoulder from the ligaments that hold it in place when I was young and it just never quite healed correctly. I was always told by bow hunting guys even when I went bow shopping if you can’t draw and shoot a 50-60# bow minimum you have no business bow hunting especially deer. Pretty much deterred me from the sport when I was younger because I couldn’t draw much more then about 40# So I just never got into other then the occasional target practice for fun. Great video!

Jeff, your instructions are clear, concise and on point. I remember reading the Zen Of Archery almost 40 years ago and remember it saying that…I don’t shoot, it (the bow) shoots. You have explained it without the mysticism. Great video you’ve presented. I had put my bow down for about 20 years because I wasn’t shooting and grouping consistently. I picked up an Asian (Turkish) Tartar bow over a year ago and I’m enjoying shooting again. While I shout using thumb release, a lot of the principles apply. Thank you for keeping concepts simple.
Samurai used thumb release to, mainly for a quickly shooting one arrow after another. But mostly Samurai archers was on horses. And their main weapon, alot think its the sword, but no, they are to this day amazing archers

I'm old now and I don't shoot hardly any archery anymore . I live in the Tulsa OK. area and for 35 years , I have been sorely disappointed in the Archery community here . Being from Illinois originally, I was used to a large number of Archery Ranges and clubs all around the countryside . Haven't found a decent Archery club , nor even one public range here . Practice (in city limits) is actually regulated or prohibited all together. Roving on public land requires a hunting license (even for stump shooting) . Archery was my first outdoor sport and Love . Thank you for keeping my love for for Archery alive , if only in my mind !
PS: Oklahoma wouldn't know what an indoor range even looks like .

I stopped shooting because I can't handle any of my heavy trad bows anymore, so I took your advice and purchased the ILF bow you recemented. It is exactly what you said it would be! A shooter. Good afternoon Jeff, I’m one of those guys that want to make the switch from compound to traditional. I guess I don’t understand how you focus and hit your target every time. You are a really good shot. It looks like you don’t really even judge distance, you just focus and shoot. I’m a newer subscriber and maybe I need to catch up on some of your videos to understand instinctive shooting. I’m so used to being in a tree and range different bushes or trees to kind of know what pin to use when an animal comes in. Over the years I have been pretty successful. Now I missed some to by misjudging the distance. I like a challenge and want to make the switch for next year if possible. I guess my question is how are you so accurate just with instinctive shooting no matter the distance or how does your body just knows where to aim. I really enjoy your videos. You put out a lot of good information.

Yes it’s absolutely true that instinctive shooting is a developed process that does not involve judging yardage especially out of a tree, once you get used to your equipment and put it the practice itself it’s like throwing a baseball it just comes naturally through muscle memory and that’s exactly why I don’t use an aiming system for that reason especially in the heat of the moment on a moving deer 👍🏻
Quite often people disparage this process because it looks different from the Howard Hill or Schulz method. It isn't, they just made it look like they were snap shooting. They weren't. Good video.

I hadn't shot a stick and string bow since I was a kid, and never hunted with one even then. Just a kid having fun in the back yard. Recently bought an old 1960's Ben Pearson Pinto recurve on Facebook market place and got it for $15. Bought me a 14strand string from Amazon and I am on my way from the ground up. Greatful to find your good basic content for beginner's on You Tube. I need to find an arrow and tip weight combo that works for me. I have a few old 31" Easton aluminum shafts to get me through developing a method. I believe that I would like to eventually hunt whitetails with it when I can confidently and consistently hit my target. Hopefully I can end up with a arrow broadhead combination that weighs at least 500+ grains with a 15%+ FOC.

Most of my different longbows and recurves have close to the same grip , sight window and a bit of an elevation bump on the shelf. I look for similarities in bows that I personally shoot well. So if I grab one bow to the next it doesn't inpact my shooting and my point ons where the arrow hits.. thanks for the video as always!!!!

Great stuff, Jeff. Thank you! I am 68 years old, and have shot the same 45# Bear Kodiak Hunter since I was 14. No release, no sights, just instinct. Though I only shoot a couple hundred arrows a year, after the first couple dozen shots I am back on target and can consistently put six arrows into 4" or 5" out to 25 yards or so. So, yes, with practice it can be achieved...and it is a lot if fun! Keep up the good work.

My daughter shot her first bow on her 5th grade overnight field trip. So we bought some extremely cheap bows on amazon just for fun. We have shot the last 2 nights. I just realized watching you shoot from the front. That i am left eye dominate shooting right handed. I dont know why it just clicked And I realized that, but thank you! Gonna work on that. Also the bows we ordered knowing nothing about them, they are very small! 45" in length from tip to tip. And 28.5" fiberglass arrows. Id say half of them are already splintering. I'll be ordering some higher quality budget bows and arrows soon. This is gonna be a great summer filled with fishing and target practice.

@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 been seeing a lot of forum members saying they prefer this bow to the black hunter too. Do you feel the same? It also seems that sanlida has a massive factory and makes many other brands under their roof.
@@legione1capone they do and the problem with black hunters is virtually no two are alike, so you never know exactly what you’ll get as far as center shot, tiller and pounds but overall good bows for sure but the ILF is a great option and you can do so much with them 👍🏻

I was no 6 in my first ever indoor shooting in Spain, I missed one arrow( bad shot), otherwise I would have been no4, that's how close it was.
No 1, 2 3 was Spanish special elite, that shot points I never seen before, but that another story!
They shoot even better with the Longbows than only a few with Compound and Recurve could make.
I was named a cheater by one of my companion in my Spanish club, due to I shooting Gap, but he sad its ok, you shoot what ever you like, and he is a compound shooter.
I didn't take the offense seriously, due to I know he can not shoot my bow with accuracy, but I beat him when he was shooting a recurve on 30 meters with my Longbow, maybe that was the thing Jeff?
Anyway Jeff, Im not a bad shooter, but not the best( yet)?, but Im working on it, I shoot a Grand Plains American Flatbow( Longbow) and I really love them, I have 4 of these bows, and they are fantastic.
Adding is that I only shoot Bamboo arrows, way better then the ceder or any other kind of wooden arrows, I love the Bamboo arrows.
They are hell to work with, and it take long time to get them flying good, but its worth it!!!!!

I need to practice this way. I always shot Iron sights on my rifles and could never remember the sight picture when i hit dead on. If i aimed, i was always just a bit off.

Thanks Jeff. I just bought a Samick sage recurve for the express purpose of getting in on the 3D bow shoots we have at my club. Im not even a bow guy, Im just a lead hucker so im clueless and need all the help I can get. I just got my bow yesterday and took some shots with it and my arrows are wanging all over the place. Ive got a ways to go.............

Not really, my index finger touches the bottom of my cheek bone, that’s my true anchor which is not really far from my eye 👍🏻

Yes sir! Most left eye dominant guys do shoot left handed but if for some reason you can’t it’s probably best to shoot with both eyes open and sometimes shooting split finger actually helps since the arrow isn’t as close to the eye 👍🏻

Hi Jeff, I think I have just found the secret of Instinctive Shooting!
You keep your nock ( controlled by anchor point) below your dominant eye vertically, your hand pushes the bow toward the target. Therefore, the line connecting the three points of your dominant eye, arrow rest, and target coincides with the line connecting the nock( controlled by anchor point), arrow rest(controlled by pushing direction), and target in the vertical direction.
Although you don't look at the arrow rest, you control your arrow rest by your pushing direction.
The line connecting the nock( controlled by anchor point), arrow rest, and target is the same line of arrow shaft used in split vision.
In Instinctive Shooting, the axis of the arrow shaft in Split Vision is replaced by a line connecting three points: the dominant eye, the arrow rest (controlled by the pushing direction), and the target. You can do this because you keep the nock (controlled by the anchor point) vertically below your dominant eye. So, you don't have to look at where the arrow shaft is pointing. The pushing direction with your dominant eye is the direction of the arrow shaft. When this direction is in a straight line with the target, you only need to adjust the height of the hand holding the bow to hit the target.
So Instinctive Shooting is Upgraded Split Vision, a smarter Split Vision.
Instinctive Shooting still has its aiming method.
The method of Instinctive Shooting is to let your nock( controlled by anchor point), your hand's pushing direction (it controls arrow rest), and target become a straight line in the vertical direction. Then, by adjusting the height of the hand holding the bow, you can accurately hit the target.
The nock ( controlled by anchor point) must be directly below your dominant eye vertically, no matter whether your dominant eye is the right eye or the left eye. this is the key of Instinctive Archery.
As long as one masters these points, shooting instinctively is no different than shooting a rifle.
Am I right? Please advise.
Quick question, Jeff. Do you intentionally judge yardage before the shot as part of your process or is that just a portion of the internal calculus that your mind accomplishes as you focus on the target and practice at different distances? I come from a compound 3D background so judging yardage is obviously an intentional step in that process. Appreciate the content, God bless you.

Well I do have a favorite string and it is the TTT Strings and they are a small non profit company that put out a champion level string that I really like however there are many really good ones out there as well that I’m sure will be way better than stock strings but TTT Strings are my choice!
Does being cross eye dominant affect your instinctive shooting? I'm currently switching from my compound to a recurve.
Yes it does slightly, but since you’re shooting with both eyes open it’s a fairly easy thing and some guys actually switch hands to avoid the weaker eye being over the arrow 👍🏻

I’m not knocking what you’re doing or saying, however, what you show is clearly gap shooting. Three under looking down the arrow. Whether or not you want to call it that, what you are doing is gapping. It may not be off the arrow, but it is gapping nonetheless.
No sir I’m definitely not looking down the arrow in any way but trusting my sight picture window which involves staring at a spot and subconsciously seeing everything else in that picture being where it needs to be which is much closer to split vision shooting than anything but in no way aiming with the tip of the arrow which is gap shooting and I shoot the exact same with various lengths of arrows because it makes no difference in my style of shooting so gapping “aiming “is not a part of my process but with that said it’s a very good way to shoot if you can judge yardage which I never do.
I am not saying that you are using the arrow per se. my shooting process has changed and morphed over the years, starting instinctive, switched to gap, and I have a similar shooting process to yours. Whether consciously or not, if you shoot a consistent form/process you are using things in your sight picture as reference points for your distance, i.e., gapping. The only truly instinctive arrow you’ll ever release from a bow is the first one, after which your brain begins to calculate trajectory and reference points.
