    This isn't always the cause of a rattle. Honda VTEC's often rattle for a couple of seconds on startup when the VTC actuator fails. It's an annoying sound, but does not cause any damage.

    • @TheSonicendeavor
      @TheSonicendeavor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@therealcool1144 That's typical of a VTC actuator failing in a Honda VTEC. Honda has a technical services bulletin (SB 016-012 and subsequent TSB's covering additional years) addressing this and there's also a class action lawsuit over this issue. I had mine replaced under warranty and the sound is gone. I know several Honda VTEC owners who haven't had this issue, so it doesn't affect everyone. Message boards are full of complaints, which Honda service departments are largely ignoring or are unaware the Honda has extended the warranty on these failing VTC actuators.

    If you have a Toyota 2009-2012ish with VVT-I... Then this is not your problem. Your cold rattle is from the cam phaser sprockets and mine has been doing it for 230k miles and still does it after an engine rebuild with which my entire timing kit was replaced. The VVT phasers were the only things that weren't replaced... Which is precisely what Toyota was doing to solve this issue under powertrain warranties. For me I believe it is my exhaust cam phaser.

  • @kenwoods6663

    The two second rattle is a noise that cannot be missed. My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe exhibited that sound. These videos gave me a good guess as to what the noise is. I brought the vehicle to my repair shop and they diagnosed the sound as a timing chain issue. They had to keep the vehicle overnight to experience the cold start noise. The cost of repair is $4700. However, the vehicle is in excellent condition with only 133,000 miles on it. It’s worth the money because my daughter drives it and I am not letting her have my 2002 jeep wrangler Sahara - also in pristine condition.

      Is your car ok now?

    • @eminiscalperpro9729
      @eminiscalperpro9729 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's fine. The primary tensioner guide is what's causing the noise. Pretty common on tbese, the plastic slide on the guide breaks and it slides down, which causes the tensioner plunger to over extend. The area where the tensioner plunger rides is in that plastic slide, so the tensioner now pushes directly on the metal guide. So, it makes a rattling noise b/c of the bad guide. But, I've driven it for probably 10k miles and she is still doing fine. I will be replacing all the timing components n water pump very soon. But, I don't have any oil pump or other engine problems. I have found that the engine seems to like 10w-40 oil over 5w-30. Unless it's extreme cold, then i will continue to use the 10w-40 from now on. Currently using Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic oil. U get more protection in the high heat and it's good to about 0 degrees. The guide issue is pretty common and you may not even know yours is bad. U can remove the small access cover on the front engine cover (passenger side) and look to see if your tensioner is fully extended and not resting on the plastic guide. But luv the X and it's still doing great after 16 yrs.

    This is frustrating because of all car sounds....of all the sounds that people complain of, the ticks the rattles, the squeals, knocks, dings. The groans, the rumbling, the creaking. Hissing. Popping. Banging. Click clacking. Humming. Droning, Scraping, Flapping. It does not matter which sound...all over the entire internet, there are only instances and experiences described as: Sounding like a _______ sound at start up. Or when attempting a cold start. The sound is heard, however briefly...and then normal operation proceeds. That is the exact opposite of my problem. In fact, the lower the outside ambient air temperature is a function of the time that my 2.2 L ecotec will operate normally WITHOUT making a strange rattling chain noise upon starting. To be clear: the sound is only heard once the car reaches normal operating temperature (~190F). I'm also burning a good deal of oil. I'm at least a whole paycheck away from being able to put any more money into this. Someone else besides me surely had shared this experience?

    My 2016 KIA Forte with the _Nu_ 1.8 Litre MPI engine also rattles for 1-2 seconds on cold startup *ONLY.*
    It sounds like an old tractor. LOL! 🤣 After that short time it sounds nice & quiet.
    *NO* metal shavings in oil at all. I've heard of others with my same car having that same rattle, and they have 300,000+ miles on the original engine. Hopefully my engine will last; it just sounds agricultural.🤣

      I would also
      Like to know cuz my sonatta does the same thing. Turn key and it ONLY rattles while i have the key turned. So basically the moment i release the key, the rattle comes to a complete stop and the engine sounds nice and smooth.

    Been driving my car for 3 years with the timing chain rattling and I'm pretty sure there's a piece of the timing chain guide in the bottom of my oil pan.
    I wouldn't say it Is an immediate fix 50,000 miles later

    so I had this in my Subaru Legacy 2012 and also noticed my oil level was low I topped off a quart and now it's gone. I have 97,500 miles.
    I know I'm due for a timing belt change, but it seems that this noise is entirely due to the lack of oil pressure and thus lack of proper tension since the 2012 legacy has a hydraulic tensioner adjuster.
    I only had this grinding noise for two days and it went away after 3 minutes. Does anyone think this needs to be looked at ASAP or could it wait a few weeks when I have more time?

      @@williamclaflin7863 this is frustrating because of all car sounds....of all the sounds that people complain of, the ticks the rattles, the squeals, knocks, dings.

    My 2016 Kia Forte rattles like described here, but it only does it when it is already warm and has been sitting for 10+ minutes. When it is cold, it never rattles, you can hear it in the following video at ~16s: th-cam.com/users/shortsSsRWwYWwzbU
