For those saying the blunt force is inhumane, a heavier hit with a stronger hit would be better, but fish are VERY weak to blunt force, unlike humans and other animals that can tank some head hits, fish are under water and due to their nature never hit their head. @Gary Lee lol Gary don't be a fucking dick. He only said that so you understand the fish was not suffocating at this point. It's still a less cruel fate to die like this than getting eaten out alive by some predator, don't you think? Be wise enough to differentiate a mercy kill than simply being cruel omfg.
"so we wanna make sure we gut the fish in a nice clean environment so we don't get sand and dirt on the eggs" *proceeds to gut the fish on the ground and lay the eggs on the sand and rocks* lmao
Interesting video. I thought you would immediately cut out the gills, as I was taught, for a quick dispatch. Hitting the fish on the head was reserved for much larger fish in order to make it easier for the angler to continue dressing the fish and removing terminal tackle. Good video.
So then you were taught to cut the gills and just let em quickly bleed out then? I was always taught either to whack them or stab the knife directly into the brain
I like how you knocked the shakes out of the fish. I do the same thing. If you whack it like a …… and its doing the shake whack it again. Yes sometimes you will break it's skull in but it's how it's done. Great video!!! I see a lot of fish alive on stringers.

Jameson Oof The thing with Ikejime is that it should be done on fish already dead as what it does is it actually severs the nerves from the spine releasing tension in the muscles resulting in a more tender fish traditionally for sushi or sashimi. But if you did it while it was alive still all you would be doing is paralysing the fish.
when I was growing up my father was a great fisherman; especially deep sea...he would often put the fish he'd caught in the kitchen sink if we were having them that day.. and if I knew I would stop up the sink n run water over them.. he'd come in figuring they were ready to cook only to find them swimming around in the water!..and I loved mullet for breakfast..kids at school would tease me about smelling it on me and we'd laugh.. I've always loved seafood..and it's so healthy!.. thanks for the videos... I enjoy watching n learning
Are all of you little girls from another planet? "Hit it with a stick" was educational to you? Do you research how to kill house bugs? I'm gonna go puke
This was super useful! Thanks for the information and the technique sharing. I always carry a small boning knife in a hard plastic scabbard when I fish and if I get a keeper (Salmon or Trout) I give it a firm whack with the tang of the knife against the head on a hard surface, then separate the spine through the gills just like you showed. If you're going to harvest fish have the decency to minimize the suffering of the animal before you eat it. Good work! And keep it up, you've got a viewer for life in me.
Steel is too hard, will crush the head and he'll bleed all over your boat. I use a mini louseville slugger, its like 16 inches long and works every time, first shot. But I do agree the branch is a little wimpy haha
I eat a lot of sunfish. I thwack them in the head with a tablespoon and then scale them with it. Takes a few seconds to scale and then I cut the head off.
I shoot mine up in the air with a pumpkin cannon, then my friend flies his F-15 fighter jet into it, knocking the fish a couple hundred miles north Towards the cold mountain peaks where I’ll be waiting with my catchers mit and a 50 caliber Desert eagle to finish her off. But whatever works for you
Jordan is the most natural teacher I've seen. Some people just know how to convey information so that it makes sense. Doesn't talk down, just pure information. Thanks J. Now I'm headed to the South Platte to fool some trout. (More likely, they'll fool me!)
Good clear tutorial on filleting! Thank you! I learned from a guy that usually used an electric carving knife. If my memory isn’t really off, seems like he was taking about 10 seconds per fish. And after cutting the filet away from the backbone but before he severed it from the tail, he flattened it out on his table skin-side down and also used the knife to remove the skin. This was on large-mouth bass in the 2-4 lb range.
No idea why so many people hate on this method. It’s definitely one of the most humane ways to do it. Lots of people don’t even knock the fish out before cutting the gills, or they just toss it in a bucket after they catch it to slowly die
I can understand why cutting the gills first; hearts still pumping so the process of bleeding out will likely be accelerated and still a quick death. But I agree with you, letting a fish slowly suffocate instead of immediate dispatch is pretty barbaric
After reading the comments you can tell how many of these people don’t actually fish. This is way better than throwing them on the shore to suffocate while you keep fishing
Thank you so, so much! I had gotten the general idea from other videos, but your detailed and step-by-step recording made it very clear. I had done some research on 'ikijime' and the tools sometimes use, but was NOT confident I could pull that off on any given fishing trip. Now I'm more confident that if I go fishing with my boyfriend or family I can humanely dispatch the fish for some tasty meals. Thank you again! 😀👍
It's called Ikejime, it's a japanese methodology for preserving fish. It is a five step process 1st step: you nailed it, you bash/stab the brain to prevent any further stress 2nd step: also nailed, but you cut the gills on both sides 3rd step: you missed, you wanna cut the artery in the tail 4th step: you also missed, you want to insert a small metal rod into the spinal column that you opened with your tail cut 5th and final step: submerge the fish in a cold water/ice bath to completely stop the cellular breakdown processes If you want it sushi-grade, find a market with a -80 freezer and have them store it for an hour, this process won't damage the meat, but it will kill off any parasites that may be hiding in the flesh. Congratulations, your fish will now hold its delicious flavor, preserve longer and even enhance over time like aged steak. (I'm talking like 2-3 weeks in a fridge it will be fine if you did it correctly and will not have a fishy odor at all.
What's your favorite fish to eat?! 🤔🐟

@Gary Lee its
Fish can survive a surprisingly long time out of water
@@Jalen_Ramseys_Burner That doesn't mean they're ok with painfully suffocating
@Gary Lee lol Gary don't be a fucking dick. He only said that so you understand the fish was not suffocating at this point. It's still a less cruel fate to die like this than getting eaten out alive by some predator, don't you think? Be wise enough to differentiate a mercy kill than simply being cruel omfg.
@Gary Lee i said its not because they are neutral
Hey thanks for making this video. It’s nice to have someone explain the whole process with no b.s. This is very helpful.

I was always taught either to whack them or stab the knife directly into the brain

how to kill a fish in the most humane way
The Ikejime method: Hold my sake (japanese beer)for a moment...

@@KingdomOfApple aha indeed😁
@@KingdomOfApple who needs to know that? Japan=sake
Weeb

Buy yourself a small steel mace, that’s a little more effective even than a branch
Its a small fish a twig would work
Steel is too hard, will crush the head and he'll bleed all over your boat. I use a mini louseville slugger, its like 16 inches long and works every time, first shot. But I do agree the branch is a little wimpy haha
I use a 20lb sledgehammer seems to do the job....
@@chasingthefish9042 A little overkill there brother :) Good luck fishing this spring.
I eat a lot of sunfish. I thwack them in the head with a tablespoon and then scale them with it. Takes a few seconds to scale and then I cut the head off.

I need a better filet knife.
I literally was just trying to do this hours ago. Thanks!

Hahahahahahaha
No idea why so many people hate on this method. It’s definitely one of the most humane ways to do it. Lots of people don’t even knock the fish out before cutting the gills, or they just toss it in a bucket after they catch it to slowly die
I can understand why cutting the gills first; hearts still pumping so the process of bleeding out will likely be accelerated and still a quick death. But I agree with you, letting a fish slowly suffocate instead of immediate dispatch is pretty barbaric
"this side is a little bit more difficult of a side" Proceeds to flawlessly cut the more difficult side (better than the first)
After reading the comments you can tell how many of these people don’t actually fish. This is way better than throwing them on the shore to suffocate while you keep fishing
“Once your done with the bonking process” 😂😂
"You'll want to keep the fish hooked during the bonking process" top kek
Nicely done hopefully get to see it in person. On Sunday when we get into some fisheys
I am most envious of your impending trip, sir. I'd hoped to get out for a few hours Sunday as well, but life is interrupting, as it does. Enjoy!
Who's your stick guy? He must be over charging if that little stick is all you could afford. lol
In a parallel universe:
Fish: How to kill a human- FASTEST & MOST FISHY WAY!
“Imma give it one more for good luck” legendary 😂
It's called Ikejime, it's a japanese methodology for preserving fish. It is a five step process
1st step: you nailed it, you bash/stab the brain to prevent any further stress
2nd step: also nailed, but you cut the gills on both sides
3rd step: you missed, you wanna cut the artery in the tail
4th step: you also missed, you want to insert a small metal rod into the spinal column that you opened with your tail cut
5th and final step: submerge the fish in a cold water/ice bath to completely stop the cellular breakdown processes
If you want it sushi-grade, find a market with a -80 freezer and have them store it for an hour, this process won't damage the meat, but it will kill off any parasites that may be hiding in the flesh.
Congratulations, your fish will now hold its delicious flavor, preserve longer and even enhance over time like aged steak. (I'm talking like 2-3 weeks in a fridge it will be fine if you did it correctly and will not have a fishy odor at all.
The way he did has been done for a long time in this fishery in the PNW and in Alaska
