I am 65 years old now. When I was in third grade walking home from school past Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs; there was usually an elderly couple fishing. As fast as they caught a fish they would fillet it. From little Pearch Bluegill, Crappie, even Rainbow Trout. Watching you fillet those Pearch has brought back that memory. That old fellar could fillet a fish, re-bait and back in the water in about a minute and a half. Thanks for showing this forgotten art to modern fisherman. BRAVO!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting James! i'm glad to hear such stories. I hope the next generation can learn to make the same. even if they gotta learn it from youtube! thanks again
Great you impressed me Roger Im 61 and been doing fish for over 40yrs. Im going to try your way my way is close but yours looks faster and your so right about the size. Thanks for the tip TIGHT LINES
One of the best reasons for keeping the smaller ones is the BIG ones are the better spawners so put them back and enjoy catching fish for yrs. Good method for cleaning
very true. i know guys who target ponds with big perch so they can get bigger fillets. those perch are olger and higher up the food chain and much slower to be replaced. the lake these schoolies came from has literally millions of 8 to 9 inch specimens.
I dont comment much on things unless I think it's worth anybody's time reading. I really liked how you had a fish already filleted to show where and what the knife is cutting through and/or around. It's like xray vision lol. It really helped me understand where I am supposed to be sending the knife through. I think that by implementing that visual method, it will be helpful to alot of other beginners as well. Great video and Thank you very much for making this! I'm going to teach my sons how to do it this way now too!
Thank YOU for the kind words VIctor. I'm trying to teach all sorts of fishing skills to those who did not get it from their family or want another idea to hone their skill. a lot of those skills are not passed down the traditional way anymore, but this youtube platform really makes it possible to learn to do most anything. I look up how tos for just about everything to learn and to teach. THanks again and good luck fishing!
I've been filleting for more years than I want to admit. This is the first time I've seen this method. Really looks great for smaller fish--I suspect 'gills and crappies, too. Thanks for the lesson.
Thank you. It works great on crappie and gills. In fact we have another video on our channel that shows us using it on crappie as a result fo popularity of this video. We use this method on everything. Including bass and walleye.
I gave you 45 seconds , the fish looks good, that is a sorry little knife, a 6 inch fillet/boning knife can also clean a whole deer. Those were not " Jumbo Perch" please toss them little ones back and let them get bigger. Catch and release is also fun, keep a few Jumbo Perch next trip.
@@chefgiovanni that sorry little knife has been with me a while. it is a part of me. and it was only $12!!! that knife has cleaned 4,000 perch without exaggeration. and at least 20 deer during the fall! and onions, potatoes and cheese when it is relaxing in the summer! :-) thanks for watching and the comment. Thanks for watching Katie, yep the new pace of life sometimes leaves the finer things behind. i guess now under quarantine we all have time to slow down and dig in on a few things we have not given proper attention to before.......ooops! is that too philosophical for a comment on cutting up a fish? :-)
This is AWESOME! You cut my cleaning time waaaay down! I just literally cleaned 13 fish in less than 15 minutes. And, the fillets were a nice size! Thank for this video and the tips.
Thanks for watching Dr. West. That is a great time. This is what we were hoping for when we made the vid. also good job on the 13 catch! its so hot here it is hard to get many fish biting. were you catching perch?
I would like you guys to answer a question I have. In Sweden (that is known for its clear environment) pregnant women are recommended to NOT eat any fish from the lakes. Also, if I child eats a herring from the Baltic Sea (yeah, that’s toxic as hell), than the child should not eat any fish from the Baltic Sea for a year. Those are recommendations from our health department🤷♂️. My question is, what recommendations do you guys in America have? Are your waters safer/less toxic? Yes it’s true, older fatty fish is collecting more toxins over the years.
I still have a dozen jumbos sitting in the fridge from lastnight... Gonna give ur way a try, even tho I already have my own method. Always good to learn new tricks...
thanks, yeah this is not the only way to cut fish. the way you have the most muscle memory is really usualy the best. but this does keep the knife sharp and wastes very little meat and its fairly fast. i want to put together a competition to see what method would win. thanks for watching and subscribing!!!!!
Subscribed. I love the way you cut right to the point of the method. Now I have to go apologize to my neighbor for making him throw back all of his small perch, and go back and buy that rapala knife he said to leave alone! I can't wait to go back to the lake with him and grab all those perch we left in it, then impress him with your method of filet as he has never let me clean a single fish. This is gonna be great- HA! HA!
Great video super informative. I like how you used the already cleaned fish to use as an example while you were cleaning the other. You really get the picture! Thanks man
I’m definitely going to try that method. I’ve been filleting fish for probably 50 years, and I think you may have just saved me a step or two. The way I do it, I take the rib cage out afterwards, which i just realized is not as efficient . Thanks for the video, it’s great to learn new tricks even after many years!
Roger, I am thoroughly impressed not only in your technique but in your honesty and truthfulness about the fish size. I too like many others sit over an 8" hole waiting for the 12" slob that is going to make it all worth while. But in the mean time anything 8" and over goes in my pile to be added to my freezer cache. The truth of the matter is that given the colder conditions and the activity on a good day... best perch cleaning video out there! thanks, I will definitely be mastering this technique!! Update: This past weekend I caught about 20, 8" and quite a few under, i would normally not keep this size but since watching this tutorial i brought them all home and gave it a go! The first side was a little messy and i sort of butchered the fish, the 2nd side got a bit easier, and by the 3rd fish i was rolling along finished all 20 fish in a bout 30 minutes! I will use this method even on lager fish like walleye. Thanks again, I've been sharing this video will all of my fellow perch lovers!
Awesome! Thanks for the shares. Glad to hear it's working out for you. Let us know what you think about using it on Walleye. Always looking for feedback
@@RogersRigs Here in Australia we call them Redfin and it is illegal to throw them back as they are considered a pest. They are my favorite freshwater fish and I've always struggled with filleting/skinning them. Thanks for the tutorial. I can't wait to go catch some!
@Paul Arnott You are welcome 😊 we love perch. Actually we are really obsessed with them :-) how do you guys cook them? We like them fried in butter the most. Thqnks for watching
Not too shabby. I was taught a little differently as many others probably have. The guy who taught me actually fillets perch and crappies for a living and he showed me a super sweet cutting technique with perch. No gutting involved or head and tail removal. You don't even have to touch the guts. The result is two full fillets with the two fillet skins and the whole perch body as the throw away, guts intact. It definitely took me some time to get the angles of the fillet knife just right so the cuts are clean and quick with little mess. Blew my mind when he first showed me how he does it. I used to make such a mess before he taught me this technique..lol.. Soo many ways to do it though, aslong as the end result is the same thats what really matters and speed comes later with repetition. Good stuff man! Beer battered perch yumm!! Poor man shrimp! Fish on!!
Thank you kindly! we have a bunch more vids of these perch on the channel. underwater footage too. they are swimming in some very clean water of Lake George NY
I love whole fried perch, scale, gut and take the head off and deep fry, very good. Perch is my favorite fish whether filet or whole. Thanks for the tip.
We used to catch him on a spreader with a leader on each side two at a time in Lake Erie. Having said that would bring them home fry Em Up and dip them in cocktail sauce they were better than fried shrimp
I had not filled a perch in decades, and needed a refresher course now that I live literally 9 ft from a river. 🤔 The small perch, because they are so tender and sweet. This is an excellent video thank you!
This was perfect, thank you! Just had a buddy drop off about two dozen perch, mostly smaller than yours, but I used your method with excellent results. Can't wait for some fish tacos!
@@RogersRigs Just got another pile of perch last night. Some of them are absolutely huge. I have never seen a North Idaho ice fishing perch haul like this. He had at least two dozen perch over 14". And one large Northern Pike. More perch fillets for the freezer tonite!
As a semi-old guy who's been fishing my entire life, I had a fore head smack moment when I watched your video - as in "why didn't I figure that out myself?" Last weekend I limited out on small perch ice fishing and had all 20 done in about a half hour. Thanks so much sir! Have recommended this method to anyone up here north of the medicine line who'll listen!

@@RogersRigs Sorry sir, missed this earlier - still figuring out a few things with computers - anyway on that particular lake we've always done best with meal worms - segments of them actually as the fish will sometimes just nibble the end off otherwise. Either drop shot or a small jig head for attachment. In summer they seem to like earth worms a tad more for whatever reason. Thanks kindly for the reply and thanks again for the grand way to clean perch! Stay well.
Been using close method but my knife ( same as yours) gets dull. Going to be using separate knife to cut off head. I should of thought of that myself. Thanks for tip!
thanks Bruce, yeah i used to use a handmade knife, made from and old bandsaw blade. it never held an edge for long so i was always trying to think of ways to preserve the edge. we just cut up 150 perch last night using the "closed method" i never knew it had a name. Thanks -Roger
I live in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve grown up catching Salmon, Steelhead and Trout. I actually found a lake next to my house loaded with Perch, and now I’m hooked! Those little fish are delicious! The white meat is firm and make perfect Fishnchips! After filleting thousands of salmon in my life I had to search TH-cam to learn how to do perch quickly to make the effort worth it. Thanks for the video. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Exactly. slow makes fast! salmon are a lot of fun. but catching a bunch of smaler fish is fun too. and they sure make a great meal. how do you usualy cut and cook your salmon/steelheads?
Roger's Rigs I like to fillet them, not really a fan of cutting into steaks. I’ll season them with Salt, garlic, onion, pepper, maybe some lime zest and bake them in the oven. Of course you can’t beat smoked salmon! There’s a bunch of salmon recipes out there, just avoid any crazy recipes that involve smothering the fillet in mayonnaise 🤮 yuk
Roger's Rigs so for salmon and steelhead you want to leave the fat and skin on, that’s where all the good omega 3 oils are, and gives the fish a delicious rich flavor.
Perch and walleye are my favorite fish. I would love to learn to catch walleye, but I've yet to catch one though I've caught plenty of small perch before that were too small to eat. About the size of a cigar. Would love to be able to up my game with them too.
some lakes gust have stunted populations. 1,000s of those little cigars zipping around competing withe each other. former fisheries management strategies for those lakes is to introduce predators that can be controlled. tiger muskies can change the ecosystem for a while. sometimes walleyes are introduced. or sometimes just a new cycle starts and the feed gets more plentiful and they grow again.
@@RogersRigs Sure Did! My neighbor gave me his cuz he had plenty in the freezer. So after throw backs we had 8 gils and 15 perch keepers. Plenty for me and the wife. Thanks again for the excellent technique.
@@RogersRigs yes,I'm fishing wolf lake (a very small lake) and I can't get a bite for nothing! What's the best time of day? Where should I target them? Why can't I catch a break? Lol #skunked
@@hellosweetheart3350 THank YOU for asking. Well i actually give a lecture to cover all those questions, but it takes me about an hour with a whiteboard, video and props. But let me try to boil it down. First research the lake. check out sites like iceshanty.com and read comments on Wolf lake. download the navionics app to your phone and look for the likely fishy spots. if other people are fishing it, talk to them or fish where someone else already drilled a bunch of holes. (they probably caught something if the punch a bunch of holes. the other biggie is the time of day. some lakes are only good for the first and last hour of the day. finally what you use matters. i only sell about 12 things on www.rogersrigs.com but they all work very well on perch and there are videos explaining how they work and why they work. I'm teaching a class in a month, i may try to record it and post it for all the tricks and concepts, but this is a start. feel free to email me with questions as well. I am on an anti skunked campaign. Oh one last thing. How long has wolf lake been frozen? if it is a small pond with limited oxygen and it has been frozen since november, the fish could be in a very lethargic state, and it is better t focus on another lake till the late ice melt brings in new oxygenated water to wake them up again. #i said too much in a youtube thread reply :-) Good luck! -ROger
Roger's Rigs No we typically go for walleye which are easy to fillet but after seeing your excellent explanation (and I have watched plenty of lesser filleting posts) I might just give perch a try. Thanks again.
Yes it can. As a matter of fact we use this method on many species of fish. You can see those as well on our channel. Some species require an extra step or trick, but it is mostly the same. We do have a bass fillet video too. Thanks for watching @Steve Benoit
YES! someone else who likes these dinky little things. These are the best sort of "fish sticks" around. I filet them the same way, but I don't lop the heads off.

Your video reminds me of my days of filleting 1000s of fish with a fillet knife. Now 1000's of fish into filleting with an electric knife i can cut your time in half. But your doing damn good.
I've not cleaned a fish in ages, but my seven year old and I catch dozens of yellow perch and toss them back. Next trip I think we'll be bringing some home to try for dinner. Thanks for sharing a great video with clear instructions.

Thank you for watching. i've got some summer videos coming out soon on catching perch with kids
I'm glad this helps! i struggled to learn this for a long time too. the guy who taught me did not really know how to cut fish quickly. we mostly did a full scientific disection and it took about as long to cut them as it did to catch them. but over time a system emerged and i want to share it anywhere i can. THanks for watching!
Great, clean, method. Being of Scandinavian descent, I still cringe when people mispronounce Rapala. Rapala's are made in Finland. With Finn, the emphasis is always at the beginning of the word. It is pronounced RAP ala, not re Pela. I don't care if you have been saying it this way for 50 yrs, it's RAPala.
I just left a comment saying the same thing haha! Living in the copper country of Michigan, where like 50% of the population are Finlanders, I learned to say it correctly despite people like Bill Dance saying Rah-paul-a. Good video though!
@@lindsc6293 Sorry guys. i even know the right pronunciation but i grew up hearing in incorrectly spoken so much i cant seem to say it right without thinking about it and slowing down
Perch is an extremely tasty fish for sure. I was fishing at a dam on day in a deep lake from the bank. nothing was biting. A few small sunfish. a storm started rolling in fast. as the barometer pressure dropped it seemed like every perch in the lake was running towards the shore line to feed on what ever the storm washed into the lake as in insects and such. In that brief 20 to 30 minutes before i got drenched I caught at least 30 perch. I ate every one of them. I wish i had known this fillet method because one of my few problems with cleaning perch is doing it well with out getting a lot of bone in the fillet. thanks man. great video.
what a neat story. Yes i do believe the barometer has a lot to do with perch feeding. i talk about it in a lake george perch video. their air bladder is sealed, so high or rising barometer really shuts down the feed. but when a storm comes in and the barometer drops the bugs rise up, even the weeds rise up and the perch can rally turn on.
I kind of did this a similar way but there is some key step changes here early on in the process that is critical to doing it correctly that I will need to switch over to doing! Thanks a lot of showing the best way to do it.
THanks My wife did the camera work. if i had known so many thousands of people would have been watching i would have tidied up a bit. and maybe have put some pants on : )

My stepfather is from Michigan and hes told me these fish are the best tasting fish in the perch family......I live in Texas and we catch crappie that would eat the but man sometimes I just want to catch smaller fish just because they are so much easier to fillet. @@RogersRigs I live very rurally so my internet is terrible, but I'll get to those videos next time I go into town. The deepest water I can find in my lake is about 50ft, and I've got a couple of spots on the ice at that depth marked on GPS where I've seen schools several times. Over the summer all my perch came on plastic tubes, but I'm pulling them out of the ice using either a kastmaster, green and chartreuse ball jig, or unpainted minnow head jig baited with wax worms, meal worms, or plastic grubs.
I know that it is a pain not to have great internet access, BUT it also must be an incredible pleasure! it soulds like you are on the right track. if they are hitting a castmaster, you will probably even get more hookups with a chain jig, like a hali jig at your local bait store or on our website we sell a glow perch chain jig.www.rogersrigs.com . the single hook dangling below the castmaster-like spoon just seems to get more hits and hook up with them a higher percent of the time. i always tip the hook . usualy with a grub or a perch eye. if you can email me we might be able to exchange contact info and talk on the phone. I'd love to help any way i can. tungstens and fly rigs work very well on winter perch as well. but locating where they are hanging out is probably the biggest element. what depth are you catching the perch at right now? what is their average size?

I just checked out your channel and Sub'd, Great Work there. oh new little ditty i t=just thought of. If its 9 its mine if its 8 that is great! I'm really trying to dig into the science behind perch growth, overpopulation, stunting, genetic reduction due to taking only the big ones, changes in food, the road salt getting int he water. let me know if you have any theories. We have MILLIONS of perch around us here in southern Adirondacks, but not a lot of big ones. thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey Roger I would have to say the average perch in most places here in Central NH are around 8-9” If you have a sharp fillet knife and don’t mind spending the time the fillets off a 8-9 incher are great, just takes a few more to make a meal. I love looking for jumbos , but would never take home more that probably 4 just because like any fish in the north it takes a long time to get to that size and if you want a renewable resource you gotta be conservative. Plus I want to eat em fresh and not interested in filling my freezer. Thanks for stopping by my channel. Really appreciate it. I try to keep it family friendly and appreciate others that do as well. Have a great day. Don
Thanks for watching Jett. there are lots of ways to skin a cat, but this method works for us. and i think it is a little easier to teach than other methods. since you can see where the knife has to go rather than just feeling out that critical spine cut.

@@RogersRigs Thank you! I'm in Central PA....the yellow perch are nice here in the lakes!

I cant wait to hear the results!!!! yes these little toss back fish are actually the best eating in t he lake!!!!!
Great video super informative. I like how you used the already cleaned fish to use as an example while you were cleaning the other. You really get the picture! Thanks man
You bet! Thanks for watching!
Glad I could help. thanks for watching. keep catching perch!!!
Great video! At 7:38 the perch head in the back moves it's pectoral fin around, I think it's waving bye!
🤣👍🏻
Roger,
I am thoroughly impressed not only in your technique but in your honesty and truthfulness about the fish size. I too like many others sit over an 8" hole waiting for the 12" slob that is going to make it all worth while. But in the mean time anything 8" and over goes in my pile to be added to my freezer cache. The truth of the matter is that given the colder conditions and the activity on a good day... I'm not going home empty handed.

The first side was a little messy and i sort of butchered the fish, the 2nd side got a bit easier, and by the 3rd fish i was rolling along finished all 20 fish in a bout 30 minutes! I will use this method even on lager fish like walleye.

Fish on!!
thanks for watching! that sounds like a really slick method, i would love to see it in action.
Really like the no bullshit approach!!! Great video.

There’s a bunch of salmon recipes out there, just avoid any crazy recipes that involve smothering the fillet in mayonnaise 🤮 yuk
thats basically what we do. we leave the skin on for smoking and take the skin off and the fat off for baking. then lots of brown butter!
Roger's Rigs so for salmon and steelhead you want to leave the fat and skin on, that’s where all the good omega 3 oils are, and gives the fish a delicious rich flavor.
LOL! Awesome any knife you want as long as it's a 4 inch Rapala. I'm getting one.

In Ontario, they call walleyes pickerel. Only fished for them once in Red Lake but, we did great using a 3 inch minnow under a flasher. Loads of fun.
Come to pt Huron Michigan for all the walleye you want in may or June. Off the wall or in a boat
Perry Bailey if your ever in Windsor Ontario look me up I’ll take you out for perch and eyes
Perry Bailey next time you go fishing try the drop shot method for walleye, happy & prosperous fishing.

@@hellosweetheart3350
THank YOU for asking. -ROger

Totally agree! My wife calls fillets like these potato chips.
We do too! and my kids eat them like potato chips. if you are not quick at the table, there are none left on the platter

Very good tutorial - thank You !
A world famous Rapala knives from The Kingdom of Finland.
A company formed by angler Lauri Rapala (1905-1974)
I have a collection of 39 knives from this manufacturer.
They really do NOT need frequent sharpening.
Why ? A good quality, high class steel.
yes it is! thanks for watching
I used to say if it’s nine it’s mine. Great instructional video. Perch are my favorite. Thanks Roger.
Oops knew I’d seen this and commented once before but it was just as good the second time around. Hahaha
Don
Thanks !
This is one of the first fish cleaning methods I haven't seen. Awesome video! Might try it on some panfish in Texas
Thanks for watching Jett. there are lots of ways to skin a cat, but this method works for us. and i think it is a little easier to teach than other methods. since you can see where the knife has to go rather than just feeling out that critical spine cut. Good luck pan fishing! you have some big perch down there too right? No better social isolation trick than catching your own dinner !
Wow really awesome technique. Never seen it before. I'm at a rental cottage and caught a bunch of perches. I was wondering how to prepare them and you really helped. Thanks buddy I'll try some of your lures.
I'm sure glad this helped. and i'm glad you got some fresh fish for dinner!!!! what were they biting on? sounds like a great way to spend a day at a cabin catching cleaning and cooking!! eat local!
You make cleaning those perch look so easy!! Just subscribed to your channel and I am going to go check out your rigs for perch. I really enjoy catching them as well. Thanks for the lesson.

@@RogersRigs I went to the private lake I fish at a month ago no luck. I am sure they are biting by now. I am near Denver Colorado. Are they bitng where you are at?
nope still too cold. water temp is still high 30 low 40. here in northern NY we has some snow this morning. i sure hope we see some sun soon. fishing is just a perfect quarantine activity. but i want to catch something
I'll have to watch it a couple times
to get the technique down, but it
seems easy enough. Thanks for the tutorial.

@@RogersRigs I used to clean them tail on bone in and everything else off. I live on on Guam now so I don't have that delicacy here! Some perch or walleye would be nice!
how is the fishing in Guam?
@@RogersRigs I have been fishing a few times...we caught some yellow fin tuna, mahi mahi, Rainbow runner and some kinds of reef fish whitch the names escape me now. The reef fish remind me of home though...flaky, white tender flesh...like a perch or walleye...YUMMY!
Watched your video years ago, and have been using your system ever since! Many thanks. What lure and bait is your go to?
thanks, yep i was just cutting up perch last night! i actualy make a lot of perch baits. you can see them on my website www.rogersrigs.com
Love your method, your teaching style and how you encourage practice, then speed. Thanks for a great video; got me to subscribe and I can’t wait to watch more. Well done!
Welcome aboard! thank you! i'll be putting out some new stuff shortly. its been a warm winter here
I'm out of Lake Erie so just moved here and learning to fish perch. Any recommendation on baits or rigs to try?
Cool… going fishing today in my Amish neighbors pond. He said it’s loaded with Perch, Bass and Cat and needs to be fished out. I haven’t cleaned a fish in 30 years! Lol glad I found your channel.
Sounds great! did you catch them????
Only two Perch… It ended up being a Catfish day! Lol
Is/are bass as tasty as pearch…?
They look similar, and we dont have bass in my waters🤷🏼♂️
But allways been wondering if they are as delicious as pearch?
This video was better than I expected, I'm from Pennsylvania, Perch ,Crappie Bluegills from Kayak, homemade small swim bait what i use. 🤠🐟👍
Thank YOU! your homemade swimbait sounds interesting. what size? what kind of jighead? we are still iced in up here
Hi . That's excellent I catch a lot of these suckers and you have just made it so easy-going .Thank you.
Thanks for watching! yeah that is the point. enjoying those little suckers rather than just wishing they were bigger.
