      What up RSH!
By chance, are you looking into the new Ramshot "Grand" powder? I haven't purchased any powders besides H4831SC, but Hodgdon specifically advertises Grand as a temp stable powder similar to H1000 specifically for magnum rounds like 6.8 western. Hodgdon has an article about it in their magazine.
Anyway, great work keeping us educated.

Thanks. I have 2 6.8w rifles and I really enjoy this cartridge, but it doesn't get a whole lot of love (for several reasons). The last two years, the 6.8 has been my do all rifle and has taken both deer and elk in those two seasons, so any extra information on it is welcome. Merry Christmas all.

Thank. You gave me a good starting point. I do plan to develop a load with a light bullet for deer. 3,000+ fps 145g Eld-x

Thank's for the video, just found it today. The 6.8 will be my next rifle purchase, have been a .270 fan since late 60's early 70s and have taken about everything in North America with it. Have alway been a huge model 70 guy so leaning that direction or possibly a fierce...

Watch Midway, I picked up Barnes LRX 155 gr at $35/50. Great video as always. Hope to give you a run for your money on the 6.8 Western in February there will be a lot of head to head comparisons between the 6.8 and 7 PRC.

I have seen the same issues with Staball 6.5 in several cartridges. It behaves unusually. I always start with a ladder going up in 0.5gr increments… looking for pressure sign. With 6.5 staball I was finding vague mild pressure sign that comes and goes as you step up the ladder. In 708 I tried H4350 vs 6.5 Staball. The H4350 trounced the staball on pretty much all metrics. For me, the staball was unstable. In a word, I refer to it’s performance as “twitchy”. I have pretty much given up on ball powder… it is a waste of time for me.
I have done myself a favour and now I pretty much limit my powder selections to the Hodgdon Extreme line of powders and the Vihtavuori 100 and 500 series powders. These powders are quality. Nowadays I am perfectly willing to trade that last 50fps of velocity for stability and reliability so single based powders are usually preferred depending on application.
    Cheers!

Great way to summarize your hsrd work. I am sticking with the 165gr nosler with 65 gr of staball HD. I got over 2800 fos out of a 20 inch barrel. I will grab some of the 170 gr to see how they do as well. I couldn't get rhe h
162gr hammers to work well for me unfortunately. I will need a good non mead bullet as it seems my state may go lead free. Keep it up man.

    Great Video! Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely love my 6.8 Western. I have a Browning Xbolt and was able to use it during the 2022 and 23 seasons. The gun has killed three bears, two bull elk, one cow elk, a mule deer buck, and a coyote. One bear was 460 yards, and the mule deer was 570 yards. The other shots were all under 400 yards. It hits hard and does a great job on big game. It is a great lightweight backcountry style rifle. I reload my own bullets. I'm currently using the Sierra 175gr TGK with Hogdon 4831SC with speeds just over 2800 fps. It averages half moa at 600 yards. I have absolutely loved this cartridge. I did get my hands on some Berger 170 EOLs. I love bergers and I am super excited to start some load development. But the Sierra 175 gr TGKs have worked amazing. Happy New Year 🍻

I’m just going to start my 6.8 testing… browning x bolt max long range in flat dark earth, arken ep5 5-25x 56 ffp mil reticle, magpul bipod, 20 moa pic rail, 26” barrel with brownings proprietary muzzle hawg brake, have 4 projectiles, Sierra 90 grain for varmint/coyote, Hornady 130 hpbt for deer, 165ablr & 175stgk for big game… have 1000 each of CCI no. 200 Large rifle primer and federal champion magnum no. 205 primer. 100 pcs of Winchester brass…The only powder I currently have is 2 pounds of 4831sc… hopefully it works for at least one of the projectiles… would like to get Berger 170 EOL but they’re nowhere to be found… will post my results

Really appreciate your content and all you do. I'm just starting to load for mine and love to see what has worked for you. Mine's a LH Tikka T3x in the factory stock, Canadian made KS Arms stainless 1 in 8 twist barrel, Burris Signature HD 3-15x44 with Sportsmatch Rings that clamp directly onto the dovetail. Love the mild recoil of this set up.
I'm starting with Magpro and the 170 gr Ballistic Tip. Have the 170 gr Berger and 175 gr Sierra TGK waiting in the wings. lots of guys are doing very well with those Sierra 175's so you might wish to try them.
Merry Christmas and wish you all the best in 2024!

I would think the 6.5 Staball powder would be a little fast for the 6.8 Western. It’s in the 4350 powder type speed. I would think you would have better luck with the Staball HD in your gun. JMO.

Thank you for sharing!! I’m guessing you are using the Winchester and Browning brass? How many firings are you getting with your brass before you are seeing cracking or loose primer pockets?

In was getting about 4 when I was using anything above 60 gr of MagPro, but I am on my 6th loading for the brass I have been using H4831 SC 9n!

New to the 6.8 Western and reloading in general. Most load data online calls for the winchester LRM primers. Are there any other primers you have tested that help yield better accuracy in your loads, or is primer selection not really a big factor in reloading? EDIT: I see you're using CCI 250 in your loads. Thanks.

    • @roguesummithunter
      @roguesummithunter  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, I haven't completed a test on whether or not the Winchester or CCI primers are better. I have just always used CCI
