Once you open a can of POR-15, it starts to cure. It doesn't matter if you put the lid on it, it will cure on you. That's why I bought the 6-pack of the little cans. I figured I could use up the small cans and not have to worry about any waste.

I tryed POR 15 some years ago on my vw vento.
There was some rust in the panel on the drivers side and after using POR15 with the prep that it needed, and after that it just stoped rusting.
It really worked.
Used black POR-15 on a set of steel wheels for the winter tires on my car. The stuff is expensive, but runs very thin and gets into any cracks and crevices. After it dried, it's important to cover it with a generic paint (I used rustoleum spray paint) to protect it from UV. My rust removal wasn't perfect, but the POR-15/rustoleum combination has held up very well to Michigan winters compared to plain painted wheels.
Hey Red, doing the underside of floor panel and inside of the fender is the perfect us of POR15. Spraying on the prep chemicals will be a pain and so will painting on the POR15, but it's worth it on a classic or a car you want to keep. Use POR15's chassis black - This is a coating to go over the corrosion protection to protect it from UV - which is about the only thing that will damage it. Wear long sleeves and a respirator. You don't want any of that crap in your lungs. Good luck.
The Metal Prep product is a zinc phosphate treatment. You're suppose to use that before you apply the POR-15

I have a sailboat that I just bought and need to fair the steel keel.... POR 15 is also recommended as fist steps before epoxy .... I think I will go this route

Yes, I will most likely next summer. However, I'm not using POR 15 on the surface of the body. I'm using it in places that you can't see that tend to rust out like inner fenders and the chassis. I'm going to use an epoxy primer with corrosion inhibitors on the painted part of the body. Thanks

@Sleek - I tried. Any used trunk lids I could find had serious rust issues. There are no new lids being made for these.
Try a product called OSPHO. It is a metal etching rust prep and works great for the price.

Hey celli351, POR15 has coatings that go over this rustproofing layer like chassis black and they have some primers too. But this is mainly for the chassis and inside stuff that you typically don't paint. What are you wanting to do?
Should you spray primer on the POR while its still tacky so paint will stick?

Thanks for this awesome video @Tool_Dude_Tony. However, I thought I could use this remove the rust on my Civic and then pain on it but apparently paint is not sticking really well on this stuff. Could you recommend me something after I wire all the rust on my car? What primer will prevent rust and will let me sand it so I can shoot over it without getting a crappy paint job? or even better, could you do a video showing how you would do and which products you would use? :) Regards!

Don't rinse off the rust chemical treatment - let it dry or wipe it off with a towel. Not because of environmental reasons (phosphoric acid should be fine in the small amounts that it is rinsed off in) but because any remaining water will collect and could encourage rusting even after you've covered it.
Hey Mike, I use Apple's iMovie on a Mac to edit my videos. On the POR-15, they have a special formula that is specifically made to coat the insides of gas tanks. I haven't tried it, but saw a demo on Powerblock. It looks like good stuff. I'd use it. Good luck.
i used it on my triumph spitfire,i didnt use marine clean,i did steam clean and etch the metal, i had to strip a coat of acrylic BRG paint off to use the OEW 2k paint i want to use,the por15 did not key an comes off in sheets,ok i shouldve used marine clean,but, this paint is super tough to key with wet n dry,on big flat surfaces it isnt too bad ,takes real effort to de-shine for keying,on the underside,where the stuff is really needed,moulded pressed shaped steel is so hard to do it's a nightmare,you just cant key all the nooks n crannies,i love the tough resistant coating,but its so hard to get it right,unless you can rough up all the por15 use zinc on convolluted surfaces,and use marine clean or you will be able to remove A4 size sheets later on.

Can you build a garage or a large shed or small barn to keep your Auto? I lived in Upstate New York and we have a similar or WORSE climate to Scotland. The answer to keeping an Auto for many years? A covered garage and preferrably a HEATED one. Taking your Auto OUT of the elements is most important. Leave it outside, and its fate is sealed and it will rust away. Most people in USA have large heated Garages with boxes of JUNK stored inside, and their baby - Auto - is parked OUTSIDE in the driveway and in the elements.
our garage used to house my spitfire,now it's a junk store ,none of it mine,carcoon is the closest to a climate controled enviroment here,but neeeds to be indoors,so liberal amounts of dinotrol and a breathable cover.winning the lottery would help.
Put important things under your bed, in narrow /shallow boxes. In the Garage, you could build shelving up to the ceiling. Then, string a hammock netting between the shelves as a type of suspended floor above the Auto. You can place on the net some light weight items that take up space. Then, with a little bit of cleaning, you can park your sweet Spitfire underneath! /----\

Dude! Just get the loose rust! I did a truck frame & other parts! It was made for the ship industry. Clean & prep is important! And folks need to make sure they get paint over any exposed metal as POR 15 is not UV resistant. The metal is coated but the paint will fade & chalk up. Good job, Dude.
Did it kill your grass when you sprayed it there? It did for me...
i dont get it, why does it need rust protector? rust is bad so grind it off and then paint? paint is cosmetic but protects the metal? so why do you need other chemicals to do that if you do a proper paint job?
+dariens007 por15 is better all the way around. its thicker then paint and wont chip off from rocks. and its a life saver for rusty vehicles. stops rust dead in its tracks and converts it rusty thin metal to a strongger state with the metal etch prep. this stuff is what to use its better then primer and paint any day of the week. just make sure you top coat it.

No prep needed with Blackstar Rust Converter other than knocking off any loose debris.
Starts working in 20 minutes and turns black which can then be painted or just left black.

por 15 metal ready's active ingredient is phosphoric acid, also found in pepsi and coke
You can clean corrosion off of batteries with Coke and Pepsi too. I don't drink it any more.

Good video Tony, I'm at that point now where I'm contemplating what products to use on my chassis floor. I have traditionally used phosphoric acid based converters then zinc rich primer. Your video is quite persuasive.
how about car's under body floor panel and inner side of fender ? i wanna do some rust removal and apply some rust prevention coating on them .
but i think it might be difficult to spray those grease remover and converter chemical.
i donno why but "it isn't coming off" really maid me laugh.. how would this stuff work on a underbelly you reckon?
would need to be done with a gun then tho..

Are making a video for painting the car after por15 prep work? I need to rust treat my car before painting it, and a video for that would be very helpful.
Some guys put a big screw in the side of the can. Others use saran wrap between the lid. Myself I buy new empty cans from the hardware store and transfer unused product with a funnel. Also store in the fridge for even longer use. :D

I decided to compare some products as well as por-15. Some obviously were better than others but i used The jelly to remove most rust then cleaner and etcher and actually found some stuff made by rustoleum that is pretty good not as good as the por15 but for someone on a limited budget stuff was pretty awesome and actually the finish almost looked the same.
I see you're in the Beef State. I have antique plates identical to yours. I'm in Omaha.
I bet the marine clean smells great when using a fabreze bottle to apply it. HA HA .
Try Chassis Saver by Magnetic Paints. A lot less fussy to work with and hardens tough and flexible.

I feel very bad seeing you spraying those chemicals on a grass. those toxic will seep down the soil.
Marine clean is actually safe to pour right down the drain if you needed too. Its strong but it neutralizes quick when it contacts water or calcium.
Then you really must be bummed w/ all the depleted uranium weapons the military has used.
To the point of ruining the genetic code of the Iraqi's.
A lil phosphoric acid, etc gets neutralized or broken down pretty quick & is relatively naturally occurring too.
Phosphoric acid turns into phosphate which is used by the plants, it's the P in NPK.
Mike Anderson Where do you suggest it should be done? I'm going to do this some time, and i don't want to ruin my driveway, or really hurt the environment, any suggestions? Its the floor pans, and there are still installed in the car, i can drain them into the factory holes, but what to do with it then?
And i'm fairly sure that one of those chemicals is water based, i think its the prep stuff. So its the marine that's the real issue, or at-least the worse of the two.

No, it's not. I'm not coating the parts where they will be welded together. I bought some SEM weld through primer for those places.
