Nice vid! Explains it very well. I just replaced the leaky steering actuator on my OMC Cobra (same style actuator as the Merc only difference is that it uses cotter pins instead of those locking tabs). Here’s a tip every season turn the helm to extend the cable and grease it and both clevis pins with marine grease. If you do that the cable won’t freeze up and if you have to replace the actuator the clevis pins will come right out.
PS those old Bendix style actuators can be rebuilt because they were also used on classic Corvettes and Mustangs so the parts are available,

Yeah, it happened to me. I ended up replacing the actuator and replaced my cable too. Steering like butter now. Best video I’ve seen so far. Also, replaced the bolt at top of outdrive. We had to cut a hole on top of outdrive on exterior of outdrive. Glad I’m not the only one that have experienced this. My Merc engine is a 1996 model. It’s been in salt water.

Thank you a bunch for your video. It took me a while to figure this out. My cable removal was much easier. It still wasn't easy, but I was able to get it out. New cable ordered. Thanks. Yours was one of the best. Most guys give lessons on outboards that are easy to reach, which makes for great video but isn't very practical for us stern drive types. Ill be on the water soon.

Great video! I followed along, but did not remove the guide tube. It felt like the torque being applied to remove the guide tube was going to break whatever ties between where the steering cable attaches on the port side and the power steering control valve. Removed the clevis pin and the 1-1/8 nut retaining the steering cable into the control valve actuator housing, moved the steering wheel to expose the cable. First one direction, then the other. At the extent of each direction, cleaned up the gummed up, sticky and dry steering cable rod. Greased lightly and then put it all back together. LIKE NEW! I think I’ll do this every other season. Alpha One 1989.

I'm in the middle of actuator replacement right now - have watched this video over and over. Super helpful!
Wondering where I can get my hands on an aluminum or stainless cable guide tube? I live out in the PNW and will be in brackish, salt, and freshwaters..

i have a 1990 liberator with a 350 omc and the steering is power assist. it turns but is very very tight kinda like a car without power steering. any ideas where to start

Start with freeing up & lubing the cable as shown in this vid if the steering is still stiff after that you may have to replace the actuator.
