How to Think On Purpose to Be Happier

  • Most of us think our happiness lies in things outside of us - but the truth is, our happiness starts and ends in our thoughts. What and how we think will determine how we feel at any given moment and the more we think on purpose the thoughts that are helpful and serving, the more we don't have to wait to be happy and can be happier and start feeling good now. This skill will teach you how to be happier now.

    What was one of your biggest takeaways from this talk on Intentional Thinking?

    • @kirstenvzumba9246
      @kirstenvzumba9246 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That my thoughts aren't necessarily "my" thoughts! They're thoughts I've learned, been told, observed(from limited perspective), other's beliefs that I've taken on. I can (and should) question them! Like my knee-jerk negative thoughts about myself. Where did they come from? Do I truly believe them? No, I don't!! So now it's time to redecorate my outdated tacky 1970's house!! Lol

      Intentional thinking?…more like intentional sinking.
      The entire basis of your video is built on sand.
      Truth is:
      ALL your thoughts are not your own.
      You CANNOT control thoughts.
      Happiness is fake perfect peace.
      Feelings and emotions control YOU to overreact.
      Overcome emotions to truly be free.

    This is the hardest things trying to get these thoughts out of your mind .in my case I was raised by not so nice of a person so the thoughts started so early in life along with the negative thoughts that I added. You explained it so well (these thoughts were never mine to begin with-it’s a struggle but I am trying to rebuild my thoughts of the person that I truly am. I absolutely look forward to watching your videos every Thursday. Thank you so much for sharing these amazing videos they help so much they give us a different perspective.

    Often we dwell on thoughts that are not serving us, particularly those out of our control. This is a great reminder to tap in our acceptance of the things we cannot change.

    I love this whole concept of choosing our thoughts. It's very empowering if for most of your life you didn't feel too much in control of your own thoughts. The idea of creating space in the mind between thoughts is great, too.

    My first time here. I am glad to find your little corner of the net, Lol! I do suffer with depression and have for 20 years....I'm so ready to be over it! The antidepressants don't seem to be working and I don't want to depend on them to be happy!

    • @kirstenvzumba9246
      @kirstenvzumba9246 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I understand, having lived with depression for most of my life (40+ years). After 10+ years of no diagnosis or treatment, Prozac was a godsend! But you're right, it doesn't "solve" the problem! To me, medications are like a life jacket that keeps me from going under and drowning in my sadness...but working on my thoughts, as Julia teaches, that's learning to swim!!

    I believe that perfection is in the eye of the beholder and exists as a relative term. In other words, something will seem perfect when you compare it to something incredibly imperfect. Years ago I came up with a word for something that gets better even when it doesn't seem like it could be possible. "Perfecter." Sometimes things get perfecter when they already came off as perfect to begin with.

    This is a really good concept,Julia. The house illustration made a definite impression on me. Like going into your Grandmothers house and it still looks like 1960. Redecorating would take alot of work. Maybe just the effort and the possibility of it looking nicer should be enough. But if the electrics bad and the plumbing bad, I don't know, maybe the old wallpaper is keeping everything together.

    Thank you so much!! I was just “thinking” this way this morning actually and got distracted by my thoughts…but I don’t have to..Your house analogy is just awesome! This was Wonderful today!
    Food for thought. 😉
    One thing that helps me from time to time, it develops separation of one's self from your own head, ok,
    So it has been denoted in previous studies and experiences, highly intelligent people tend to talk to themselves.
    Start thinking out loud, so you can notice what it's sounds like and how it's said about the things going on internally. Pay attention to what's being said and how it's being laid out.
    In the beginning it might be kinda self-defeating and representing low self esteem and worth, just listen, once you hear what your saying about yourself out loud those words can change to more productive and insightful conversations vs just a beating match.
    Once self talk starts to improve you may notice more "room" for healing and healthy spaces inside.
    Don't know if this is anything good. But.

    I've been studying Wayne Dyer, Albert, Ellis, Louise Hay, and Dr. David Burns. They all talk about our thoughts create our reality. A challenge is to be able to be objective to what our thoughts are. This is not so easy to do. We need the ability to be objective about what it is that we are actually thinking.

    What's going through my head constantly is "Justin you are completely psychotic and you are probably going to hurt someone one day". Followed by "Don't let the demons win, hold on to what is good, hold on with everything you have".

  • @That1PissedOffBoomer
    @That1PissedOffBoomer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's funny you mentioned self-awareness as my friend constantly tells me about that. I do think when you've been hurt a lot you can become a very hostile person. It doesn't give someone the right to hurt others because they've been hurt but I do think that happens a lot. So I think for some people like myself it takes a conscious effort sometimes to be a kind person and that does start with how we examine ourselves. Life can be incredibly cruel and incredibly frustrating but I think one of the biggest travesties of life is for it to make us that way too. Lately I've been a lot more aware of the way I treat people. Life is hard for everybody we don't need to make it any harder on others than it needs to be. My mom always tells me you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.

    Like others, I really appreciate the analogy that our thoughts are not our own and that they are more like paintings on our walls that were hung by our mentors. The part that really was a mind shift was for me was that I have the choice to remove the paintings I don't agree with.

    I have to speak up on this: TH-cam videos are not enough. The main reason why I disagree with web associates are because I feel advice cannot be fit into all categories. There is no cure all for these things. Advice cannot be taught to the masses. It has to be fine-tuned to fit the individual.
    My advice is to speak to a therapist so that you can get personalised advice, and take the relevant personalised steps. Rationalise your thoughts with your therapist, so that you get to know the reasoning behind certain things.
