I struggle with overthinking many things. It's a real challenge. It's good to know that others also deal with it and that it's not unique to just me.

I haven’t watched this all yet but I’m 1000% going to. Obsessive/intrusive thoughts are some of my biggest OCD struggles.
It’s debilitating more often than not so I always appreciate these types of videos.
People don’t realize that a lot of the struggles with OCD are internal so to speak, and not SEEN.

I have a totally different view on intrusive thoughts. I had looping ocd intrusive thoughts ptsd triggers. we can fully recover from them. it just takes repetition and clarity. it goes against traditional methods because it's counterintuitive. when we get into an anxious state of fight or flight because of life situations that keep us in a high stress level. it gets hardwired to our new baseline so it's normal for the brain to send out alarms ⏰️ of physical symptoms and intrusive thoughts/ocd/anxiety it's perceiving danger that isn't there. it find everything to be a threat. our limbic system is our security system and it's job is to keep us alive. that's the priority it doesn't care if your suffering as long as your alive. it sends out alarms and asks questions later. it's a mal adaptive stress response. it acts like there is a tiger 🐅 near by when there isn't. when we react in fear and and run around fighting our thoughts or body sensations the brain thinks your In danger and backs you up for support by sending alarms of fear and thoughts to get you to urgently fight or Flee. what I did was Allow the thoughts to be. let then run wild and burn 🔥 it's energy out. invite them in. ask for more. picture the thought as a cloud passing through your chest and throat and let it be. sit in the fear and let it do its thing. it will dissolve and lift. the key when allowing the thoughts to float through you is to not ruminate the thought. this is key. do not try to figure it out or try to fix it because you will never win. it's like pouring gas on a fire. just allow the thought(fear emotion) to be acknowledged. when you resist them or try to distract they become bigger and louder. what we resist persists. it's like saying don't think about purple tigers. the content of the thought..is IRRELEVANT. you will notice that after you processed the emotion behind the thought that you will forget what the thought was about. the thought is supposed to bring you into the emotion. the emotion needs to be acknowledged. when emotions like fear aren't acknowledged then they become bigger and you get triggers. emotions send thoughts to bring you in. that's its job.the thoughts are supposed to be scary to get your attention. that's the point. if they weren't scary then they wouldn't be able to get your attention to the fear emotion. trying to count backwards or forcing your self to be in the present moment is resistance and doesn't work. it's a coping mechanism that makes things worse. anxiety can find you in the past..in the future and definitely in the present moment. it doesn't matter. we shouldn't be limited to the present moment to avoid or resist thoughts. that feeds them. what we do is 1. allow the thought..
    2. don't ruminate or try to figure it out. don't white knuckle or rush the thought away because that tells the brain you are resisiting and in danger.
    3. engage in life. do something you enjoy. engaging is different then distracting because you allow the thought to do its thing and you allow it to come along. taking the fight away from intrusive thoughts calms your limbic system with repetition and time. you also build new neural pathways and eventually the invasive thoughts will be in the background like all the other 70 thousand thoughts. at first you will need to practice this method and process each thought but eventually they get less sticky. you will be able to scroll on from your thoughts just like we do when we see something we don't like on fb feeds. we just scroll on. it's also a form of exposure. eventually the thoughts become numb. they go from a 10 to a 6..to a 5...3..numb. this works with triggers also. I used to loop on 1 single thought for weeks at a time. now I'm free and have my brain back. I use the present moment to engage in life not to distract but to savor the moments and elevate my mood to hardwire Happyness. being mindful is allowing your thoughts and not judging them or fixing them. observing them and allowing them to be and redirecting to life. I hope this helps ...it's not a new approach..clair weekes wrote about this over a century ago. you won't find it much on you tube. it's a simple approach but it works. 👍❤️

    • @mindful__gardener
      @mindful__gardener 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

also if you want this process to go quickly...after you did the last step and engaded for 20 min in something you liked...go back to the thought. hunt it! ask for more. and repeat the steps. then engage again. do this through the day and one by one the thoughts (alarms)get numb. it might seem difficult to run towards your thoughts but whats the other option? fighting them is worse and keeps you stuck. the other way is hard but you recover. it's actually not as bad.

Such good information here. My gf has to remind me to stop over thinking everything. To take what she says/writes for what it is. No other meaning behind it. She says I overanalyze too much. I can’t seem to help it. I’m currently in therapy and working on it. Over a year now and it is helping. It’s almost like a thought process reset. I think of it as a ‘hard reset’ on an iPhone. The visual I get from that helps me to remember; my thoughts are not always what’s really happening or what’s really being said.

This post is yet another reminder that what goes on in your head, someone else's head, and what goes on in the general world is three different things.

  • @chrisdigitalartist
    @chrisdigitalartist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Hi Julia! Shifter here! Great video. I love these reminders. Things that we have learned in the Shift Society.
Also one helpful tip that I have learned from you that I would like to share is to ask ourselves, "Is this thought healthy, helpful, producitive or serving?"
And I admit, you know me, I have a doomsday fear mindset so that resonating with me. We can't control what we can't control in the world, so why spend time worrying about it.
    NOTES:
    • Our brain thinks about the past or what could happened in the future.
    • We are thinking about things that other people may be thinking.
    • Low sense of self usually struggle what others think.
    • After leaving social event and you think about "What if I said the wrong thing or they
took that the wrong way…" etc
    • Drawn to drama, fear and doom. (Scrolling social media and news)
    • We can only anticipate the past the future other than in our thoughts.

    How to Stop them:

    1. Recognize the only way we can experience the past or the future is in our thoughts.
Say, "I noticed that I am having the thought that…" and "This is not a truth or fact… but
even if it is, it isn't helpful to allow my brain to keep going over and over it. " …etc…
    2. Call out the intrusive thoughts as an intrusive thought, "I am NOT my thoughts, I am the THINKER of my thoughts. I am the being thinking of my thoughts." "This is the thought that's coming in…it is an intrusive thought"
    3. Dispute the thought. "Is this thought 100% true, 100% of the time?"
Take a step back and ask ourselves, is this true?
    4. Do a Sucky First Draft - a brain dump journal. Just write down every thought - don't worry about grammar or even disputing them just dump them out.
    5. Then take that piece of paper of all the unhelpful thoughts about life or yourself and then rip it up or throw it in the fire (safely lol) a symbol of disposing these thoughts. You don't have to keep thinking these unhelpful thoughts.
    Thanks Coach!
To those who are reading this, remember always what a worthy and valued person you are. ❤

What about grief. Did this work with grief? My daughter and grandkids are moving 400 miles away and I’m used to seeing them often. I’m single and they are a huge part of my life. Every time I think of them I go right into emotional pain and tears. They are leaving next week and I have never experienced this type of grief before. I’m thankful it’s just a move but it’s not something I am coping well with. Will this work because it’s a family situation. I have another daughter here and grandkids but they are not home much and not as involved in my life. I have centered my world around my family as they bring so much joy.

God I want so badly to stop this and stop feeling this way. It's so hard and it has ruined so many relationships. Especially the relationship with myself which is pretty much non existent but I'm trying to learn. Feel so broken alot and not worthy .

Hi, thanks for the videos! It’d be even more helpful if you’d provide fewer examples and more of the practical how to stop it. I’ve seen lots of videos of yours and am a new subscriber as of a few days ago. So, maybe if you can keep this in mind, that’d be great! I don’t have much time for long videos, but the short videos that give tips to change and stop the intrusive thoughts, or whatever the topic is, would be super. I appreciate it!

No matter what trick we use, it is NOT NOT NOT effective to keep saying thoughts are without any evidence or baseless!!! When are ppl ever going to understand this. Thoughts arise because SOMETHING ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO US. It’s NOT just something we conjure up in our heads!!! I was a completely healthy and happy individual but now I cannot even smile, have crippling anxiety ( I throw up sometimes) For years!!! All thanks to the relentless narrative of how thoughts are baseless and don’t believe them. This narrative is even adopted by people who are supposed to heal! Acknowledge yourself more, do not dismiss without really finding out what’s the reason you are having a thought. Some thoughts are baseless, I agree. Bit so many are NOT. The overthinking happens because we fail to validate our own pain and keep feeding ourselves with the narrative “It’s all in our heads!”

Can you talk about when famous people commit suicide and how that may affect us. For example, the recent death of Naomi Judd or someone like Robin Williams. It scares me when they do this because if they can't survive, how will I.
