    One of my favorite gratitude practice that really works for me is this: everything that you don’t take the time to appreciate today will dissapear tomorrow. In this mindset, you end up being gratefull for the smallest things like the softness of your clothes, the smell of coffee, even the paint color of your wall. It also show me what i want to keep in my life and the things I don’t care about, value or want to change :-) hope it helps someone out there (english is not my first language sry if it was not clear) take care❤️

      So glad you mentioned this. I've been doing the 3 good things exercise for close to 3 years now, in addition to trying to stick to a 30-day goal to start, and it's ok if I miss a day, I just restart the count on Day1, and again try to hit 30 days. But 3 good things is so little, it's one of the easiest habits I have that has made the biggest difference in my life. I recommend it to anyone of my friends that feel like they might need a little bit more daily happiness!! :) I call it my "Good Job Journal" with subtext ("only good things")

    I struggled with depression since my youth. I still do, but one of the big turning points to me getting more of a handle on it was beginning to work at Humane Society of Charlotte as an animal care associate and eventually adoption counselor. Caring for other beings can really bring you outside of yourself and help you find more joy

      My mom would always say to me whenever I was upset about not getting the dishes done, "it's okay, they'll be there tomorrow" lol and this would always make me feel better!

    This video has validated my efforts to engage more with people. I am PAINFULLY shy and an extreme introvert. In the last month I have literally forced myself to participate in at least one activity a week involving people that I have no choice but to have a conversation with. It has helped me so much and I’m starting to have less anxiety when I know I have to talk to people and I’m beginning to look forward to it. Even baby steps matter.

    When you talked about being grateful for zippers it made me laugh and I felt Genuinely positive for the first time in a long time. And then I started ugly crying. But in a good way. Now I actually feel a lot lighter. I can't believe zippers is what helped to break me out of that fog but hey whatever works. The world is a funny place.
    And for anyone else who needs to hear it: you never know what's going to help you feel better. Just keep going! For the zippers!

    Congratulations on your pregnancy. I totally agree with everything you say. My son has a heart condition and autism. He has started senior school (UK) and his anxiety levels have gone through the roof and is now having suicidal thoughts and hearing voices. I am looking at home schooling him, but being a single parent and running my own gardening business, this is going to be tricky, but I can do it. I always look at the positives. We have a roof over our heads, we have food in the cupboard, we have loads of great friends and family. We both have the same sense of humour and laugh at the same things. We both love the water and swimming under it and we love each other. He's at his Dad's today, so i'm going to the gym, that's my me time. Thanks for all your great videos.

      Keep going with your son! Our son with ASD has his first full time job at age 33. He is happy and needed. Keep encouraging his passions and he may work in that field one day. Our was into computers, web design, music +sound engineering, IT. Did better in adult education than high school. Volunteered at 2 community radio stations to get skills and contacts.b Now works for a TV network.

      Keep going, and pat yourself on the back for doing a great job being his mum. You sound like you're doing brilliantly. My 31-year old autistic daughter is happily married now, has her own home and a job. I'd never have thought it. It's wonderful you have supportive friends and family, I'd not have managed without them.

    I couldn't agree more re gratitude. With what is going on lately, I could feel myself slipping into that sense of dread (like a cloud when you wake up), that so much is wrong in the world. That doesn't help anyone. Am now trying to consciously appreciate a hot shower, being served in a shop or cafe etc, also noticing what is around you - clouds, birds, leaves on trees.

    Everything you said I’ve been practicing omg it changed my life in a way I never imagined. I deal with chronic illness daily at one time I was so bad I wanted to die. Than I had a moment when I realized I had another choice and it was to change how I thought. Calm down my anxiety. Sap the negative thoughts right away. Laugh look at funny videos. Laughter really is the best medicine. I do random acts of kindness and did same thing you did. That makes me happier than anything I could ever buy for me. Like you I smile. Gratitude is very important. Did “ the magic “ 28 days of gratitude I loved it it was like a scavenger hunt for gratitude. I couldn’t wait for the next chapter. The law of attraction like attracts like. What you focus on gets bigger. Our brains are plastic we can refrain our brains. It works. Thank You for your videos. I share them with those I help and for me that is my happiness helping others just as you mentioned. It works ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    I remember being pregnant with my 5th baby and how he got the hiccups inside my belly every night at dinner time. I decided to try to associate my “panic tummy rumble” to the memory of his hiccups and it automatically helped me get out of the symptom, anxiety, symptom, panic cycle.

      Wow! Thank you for sharing this. I have “painful bladder syndrome” and when I Feel that familiar twinge of pain come on it immediately triggers anxiety and thoughts of “oh no not another two week dealing with this pain again” which causes more pain from being anxious. I’m going to try your idea of remembering when I was pregnant with my babies and how it felt when they would kick my bladder rather than going to the negative. 💕

      I know this is over a year old, but your comment made me focus on something that always makes me happy! I was lucky enough to have my first and only child two weeks before I turned 40. Every night around 7pm there were hiccups and it made me laugh every day. He’s 16 1/2 now, so memories like this help me get through the difficult teenage years.

    I really appreciate this. I’ve been telling people, including my psychiatrist and therapist, that there needs to be more than just gratitude journals and noticing the moments to be happy. That there needs to be something to teach people who have been depressed all of their lives, who are now on meds that work, to even understand what the hell happiness is and what it feels like. This actually helped a bit more. I am certainly looking forward to the next one.

      Hi - I don't know if you've already hears about this or if you've tried it, etc. But a famous 20th century psychologist (and repeated and quoted by Stephen Covey I'm his books) said - and I agree with - that happiness comes from the pursuit of a worthy and meaningful goal. Probably feeling like or actually makes me making actual progress toward to that goal as well.
      But something I've noticed in my life is that I, and I believe people in general, need something meaningful to them and that positively excites them to look forward to and work toward.
      Basically, people need something to look forward to and work toward.
      I did this instinctively once by deciding I wanted to train for and run a marathon in a beautiful northwoods location (making a mini vacation out of it), I actually started out with the goal of training for and doing the Hawaii Ironman - so I could combine a challenge and goal with a vacation too to a place I always wanted to visit (so started with training amd running a marathon). This was actually reactionary to a desk job I hated with no windows and too many long hours and I could've done better things than the marathon project for my health, fitness, financial and career goals, but it WAS a great experience in pure goal setting and did get me outside.
      But my point is that I don't know, maybe you have things to work toward and look forward to already but if not, maybe consider that idea.

    The 3 good things thing really hit me. I'm having compassion fatigue caring for a sick relative. I feel awful that I'm so frustrated with her when she can't help being sick. It just really hit me that I'm still helping her a lot, even if mentally I have a decent amount of negative thoughts about it. I'm going to try to focus more on how I am helping, and less on how I wish I didn't have to.

      @@mamacitazfuentes8755 watch her video on reducing anxiety. I also use qigong to ad balance. Its a difficult thing to overcome and no I haven't got over it especially at night trying to sleep but it does help. Good luck

      _healthy foods and water .
      _Spending more time with family and friends for reassurance .
      _Magnisum vitman.
      _Talking to a psychologist (only went once but it was nice to have someone validating my issue ) and talk about what was the reason or reasons it was happening .
      _Don't get scared of Ur symptoms so Ur system understand there is no threat.

    Years from now when your daughter remembers this moment all she will remember is your warm hug and the look in your eyes when you told her you loved her. She won't remember the dirty dishes or the laundry. And if she does she will associate them with positive emotions rather than negative. :) Thanks for reminding me to find joy in the little things again.

    No, the gratitude thing is quite magical. I've been intensely sad my entire life basically. About 9 months ago I started doing the writing 3 things I was grateful for. I also meditated on the idea that I would unconsciously notice things I am grateful for throughout my day. And, that whenever I find myself feeling sad or negative, to immediately start thinking of things I have to be grateful for, instead. Within 3 months of consistently doing these exercises, my life was already in the process of absolutely transforming in so many ways. It's been another 6 months since then. And I keep flying higher and higher.
    Happiness is 100% something you can learn, although there are other pieces to happiness, such as knowing that your soul desires something of you, you must do it. For me, for example, I spent about 3 years at 230 pounds. But I love soccer and skateboarding with all my heart, and my soul will absolutely not allow me to remain overweight. So, I'm down to 163 thus far, and very muscular, it feels great, and I'm glad my soul would not allow me to do otherwise.
    Yea, it's a lot of work to begin with, if you're like me and you were raised to only see the dark things, it's not easy. It's actual work. It takes persistence to change habits. But human beings are very much programmable. You can change your likes or dislikes, you can change the way you eat, the way you think, anything. Your feelings will follow your repeated actions. The gym sucks as first, when you're 230 pounds of fat. But you just keep doing it regardless of your feelings. And eventually, you begin to love it. It gets easier. You've lost fat and gained muscle. You're getting strong, and building physical endurance. Now you enjoy it. Your feelings will follow your repeated actions, simple as that.
    I truly feel bad for the people that don't understand that happiness is in fact as simple as choosing it. I've had conversations with actual therapists here on TH-cam that truly believe happiness isn't a choice, and that's scary there are people out there feeding people that lie.

    I've always found joy in serving/helping others. That feeling can last for days knowing that I did something good for someone. I don't need to know the person. Just see a need and fill it.

    I love what you're doing with your kids. Ill be watching this video again Im sure. In the last few weeks my car was totalled and I moved, to a place that needs a lot of work its a bit of a slum, for more than its worth, and since I did delivery, lost my job because the insurance says my rideshare endorsement was vehicle specific. There have been a ton of blessings, but still its difficult. Today is full body inflammation and a very late start to a full day. I try to repeat gratitude in prayer often as I go about things. One thing also is that I decide on what I can do, work the problem. Like the new bathroom has mold in it that I didn't notice when I came to see the place. So every time im in the shower that barely has water pressure Im going to scrub a patch of wall. Lease is only 4 months, but I can't abide mold. I already washed the walls in my room. And Im not sitting here hating how dirty this place is, I did something about it. Feeling helpless and like I just have to accept bad environments is not something I do anymore. There was a bad vibe lets say in my mission apartment, I washed the walls there too. It changes the spirit of a place. Here Ive already seen bugs, so Im spraying the screens, the windows that have them, with pinesol hoping the pine oil will deter them. Many don't like peppermint oil either. What can I do rather than just accept a bad situation helps my mood, i suppose it could be a good thing I did that day. But also preparing to get out of it is another.
    On another note, Helen Keller in her own biography described how deaf and blind at age 5 she put away her own laundry. She had someone with her if I recall right. Many people just want their kids to just go do things, but they either don't know how sufficiently, or its associated with something negative and they don't want to, or subconsciously have resistance to it being negative. Even though I don't have kids, I know doing the chores with kids creates a positive experience as they learn it, and that they can learn it at very young ages. Do it with them, teach them how it's done, they and you get that sense of connection, they have a positive neural connection for the rest of their lives and the thing is easy to do. Dishes? Bins with water at their height. They learn to clean off dishes after dinner themselves and load into dishwasher, or rinse and dry. Anyway, something Helen Keller, and brain science taught me.

    At first i found it kinda silly but yeah it absolutely noticed not only a change in my daily mood, but also i started just seeing things much more positive

    first 15 seconds and i’ve been called tf out, i’ve been overeating, getting high, and distracting myself with video games to numb out and get away from the feelings I don’t want to face, it happens every time i cycle into depression, i lose presence and stop feeling gratitude among other things

    What lovely ideas! Cleaning something helps too e.g. cleaning a cupboard and planning to put blankets in it, cleaning up the floor and making the room better. Helping others has kept me going through all of my bad traumas, it makes me feel warm inside.

    Thank you! My 85 year old dad is suffering from some severe physical ailments that will likely never improve and has just had to move into a retirement home and can no longer drive. All at once. He is so depressed and we don’t know how to help him. He has decided there is no joy to be had. It breaks our hearts and also makes him very hard to be around. I hope we can watch some of these together. Grateful for you.

    I loved your zipper example:) I've been struggling with immense (physical) pain recently.. After getting passed the initial shock I decided to not let the pain paralise me and through internet (and not really the healthcare system's help) found my way back to getting decent night sleep within a couple months.. this last couple weeks every morning that I woke up more or less pain free and just the reminder that I was able to have a decent night sleep gave me the biggest smile to start my day.. It IS miraculous to have hot running water available!

    I started making an effort to listen to funny and positive music instead only to Leonard Cohen - I love Leonard Cohen and no disrespect to the genius artist - but it is actually much more fun to wake up in the morning having "Happy" in your head instead of "You want it darker" 😊
    So yes, from my side I can totally understand what you are saying and for me this absolutely works. It makes me a more positive person.

      I'm in a similar boat but instead of happy pop songs I like more upbeat instrumental groovy stuff. My brain can be sensitive to overly happy stuff so I have to ramp it up over time haha

    "Dishes are patient" may be a quote to save my life! My boyfriend and I moved into our first apartment where we don't share a common area with other people. When we first got here, I stressed getting dishes done and started argument after argument because of my anxiety of ensuring everything was neat. Now I've come to learn that the dishes aren't going anywhere, but my relationship with my boyfriend can always grow. Those dishes aren't listening to my problems, comforting me, or doing anything that my human partner does. Thank you for giving me my new mantra when I feel let material things overcome real human connection!

    I have altered my diet and exercise routine. I pay attention to nutrition and supplements with a positive, grateful frame of mind. I grew up poor, and I appreciate everything I have. I used to be depressed and my Medical Doctor wanted me to see a psychiatrist. I did everything on my own. Doctor, I love your videos, thank you.

    REally helped me a lot...i feel low sometimes for no reason...yes I live alone due to certain issues in life...but generally keep myself happy with yoga and walking...even then sometimes i feel low...and today i hit upon this video..immediately started writing good things of today...made me feel better...Thanks a lot...stay blessed

    I live in the UK and it Emma is right, there is a lot of emphasis here on buying stuff to make you happier. One of my friends in Malaysia gave away $200,000 (money she could afford to donate, but she's not a millionaire by any stretch of the imagination) and she said it was empowering, energy inducing and even fun! But in Asian culture, this is expected. Food for thought.

      I am chronically ill and unemployed on benefits so I can't possibly afford to donate that kind of money, and there are many people in the UK living in terrible poverty now as a result of terrible right-wing economic policies (this is not a blanket demonisation of everyone who's not super left wing but what the government in my country is doing is really really hurting the homeless, low waged workers, disabled people and so on and also making it harder for people in abusive relationships to leave bcuz there is less funding for refuges the list goes on). In addition to that I firmly believe self-care (and I don't mean that as a euphemism for things that are often more for the benefit of others like looking pretty or showering and brushing your teeth very frequently, I mean actually doing things just for you/primarily for you) is an important and needed part of life, we don't only exist to serve others... however because I already have a lot of nice stuff and also for reasons to do with workers' rights and environmental concerns I am trying to buy less (also to try and buy from businesses that are at least somewhat less iffy than the likes of Amazon more often such as small local bookshops, etc., when I do buy myself something nice) and I have given more money to charity this year and I am glad that I can focus more on ways of doing nice things for myself that are not just constantly buying myself things bcuz for sure that was getting to feel rather empty and pointless like I've cut back on online window shopping as well cuz even if I don't buy anything I'd rather not be so focused on that kind of consumerist stuff, and also have more money to give to help others as a result :) I find the way we are being conditioned to buy so much from such a young age upsetting at this point tbh I don't look down on people who enjoy shopping but there's so much more to life than just buying buying buying.     Thank you for these tips. They are all so good. Being grateful for the "little" things and spending more time with our children. Our youngest son, when he was 11 years old gave me a little plaque that still hangs on my wall. It says, "Good moms have dirty ovens, sticky floors and happy kids."

    When I started writing a 2-do list on paper, instead of using an app on my phone, I started to notice how much better I felt because I could see the things I'd accomplished when they were crossed off the list, as opposed to becoming invisible when just being deleted. Maybe this is connected to the "3 good things" technique?

      I would argue that it's "Tangible Progress"... The Digital "progress" of the world might've gotten us away from wasting the "dead tree paper" products for frivolous things... BUT having the "to-do" stuff just evaporate leaves all your progress in some intangible "cyber-space" like it never even happened...
      We ARE still "material creatures"... SO it's particularly nice to look around and be able to MEASURE what you've done, as opposed to it just "dissolving into oblivion"... Your paper list with the crossed-out items is tangible, in a sense that you can hold it in your hands, and say "Ah HAH... There it is. I DID THAT."
      Look (for instance) at people with some hobby or another... like violin or piano... AND at first, it's clunky and awkward and every note has to be labeled... AND they're slow and studying EVERYTHING... and slowly they pick up their pace... getting past the labeled notes and learning the hand movements and patterns for chords and arpeggios... sharps and flats... AND there's a growing repertoire of songs they can play as they go. BUT there's that first "plateau"... Sure they can play it fast or slow, but every new song still takes the same course of study... slow and awkward at first... clunky... finger-slips... missed chords... flats where they should be sharp and sharps where it should be flat... and then a few repetitions of just getting it "technically correct" but SLOW... until they can start playing it even at reasonable speed... AND the drills... ALL the way back to fundamentals, after six or eight years, STILL playing scales every week... It's difficult to see progress, even though EVERY SONG is progress. It doesn't seem like it, but the 65th tune picked up took about half the over-all training time that the 12th did... and even the 12th was shorter than the first, when everything was "brand stinking new"...
      It's that "plateau" that most people just lose interest in the hobby... Unless they get shown their actual progress in a measurable way...
      BUT if they can identify a tangible result... something that they can measure from where they were even a few weeks earlier... on the other hand... THEN they're more likely to nod and appreciate the results of their work.
      SO we (humans in general) like to work. We LIKE to be useful. We just don't like it being wasted... We don't like to FEEL like we're wasting our energy and time. That's normal... It's even healthy. SO we LIKE to see results from our efforts, and it's easy to start losing faith and heart when it seems like we're putting in all this energy and getting little or nothing out of it.
      Maybe that's all there really is to finding anything you can do to be "worth doing"... ;o)

    For me gratitude has to be natural. I used to be a guy who never says nice little things. But I learned that I actually enjoy telling them and it brings me closer to other people. And I'm not talking anything like fake compliments. I mean learning to see the good aspects of live.

    I love these ideas! I do have so much to be grateful for! Also a few things that my Mr. and I like to do is take a drive away from the county where we live in southern Ontario Canada. As you drive along lake Erie there are amazing road side stands in summer with delicious fruit vegetables and baked goods. We like to put in a 20 dollar bill instead of the small amount they ask for. When we go to a drive thru for coffee we pay for the order behind us! It feels good to be kind to others even if you don't know them!

      @Glendolyn Minxalyn It just boggles my mind how I can put a piece of paper through a machine and it will translate it into electrical impulses that can come out through a phone line in a different part of the world. Even pictures to some degree! Fascinating! And I still don't really REALLY understand how it works! 😂😂🤷

    This is a great video. I’ve told my husband and I just want to be happy again….feeling like I have lost myself. He had said the same thing write down what you are grateful for everyday. I also tend to be “on the go” all the time. I never take the time to enjoy the moment.

    Ohhh.. yeah.. I practice gratitude everyday. Every early morning when I see the sun I bow down & thank the sun god (as per Hindu mythology ) for everything that I have and asks him to bless me w/ more strength & valour & in evening when I see the moon.. I again thanks the moon god & asks him to bless me w/ peace and calmness.
    [So I just use these heavenly bodies as my daily reminder instead of phones apps to practice gratitude : ) ]

    This is not directly related to this video.. but I wanted to let you know about something that is happening tonight. I am having an anxiety/panic attack. It's not really bad, thank God. But I feel extremely uneasy and restless and afraid of the horrible things that might happen. I remembered something you said in one of your videos about anxiety. You said to try not to fight your attack, but rather acknowledge it and let it take its course. I remembered that tonight as I recognized I felt very anxious and worried. So I've been keeping busy getting things done around the house that need to get done, but realizing that I'm anxious, but that's okay. It will pass. And I will live to see tomorrow as I always do. So thank you for that advice to ride out the attack and not to rush it or fight it. This is a bit of a longer attack but I am working through it and it feels less serious than usual.

    Thank you so much for this video. I love your style and examples from your personal life.
    When I was in therapy for an eating disorder, my therapist told me to start writing down 3 good things of the day. It helped me to focus, look for the good every day, whereas before I would have written off every day as awful and depressing. Turns out my day was not all horrible at all. After a while though, she noticed that most of my 'good things' were passive. The sun was shining, there was a good show on TV, yayyy it's Friday! She said it was great that I noticed these things, but asked me to start adding at least 2 more things that I had taken an active part in. So 'I made myself a nice cup of tea' or 'I had a long chat with a friend'. It's become a great habit that I still keep up with, although I have slipped back to 3 things that are usually 'active', and log them in my Daylio journaling app, or my planner. There are lots of people sharing theirs online, too, using #3goodthings , and on reallllyy good days, I'll add a few more.

    I'm new here and I love your content, all of it so far has been wonderful and I am grateful. DBT is my life guide and I can see you implement it in a lot of things you share. Shifting one's perspective, finding the silver lining, acknowledging that desirable emotions are just as valid as the undesirable ones, and we have to be grateful for emotions because they help us. Contributing is a beautiful way to help us feel good. All in moderation. This comment is one of my ways I am connecting with others today, and validating myself for it!
