    Seems like a straightforward process... Especially if you have all the cool tools to get the job done right. Thanks for sharing

    Dave, great video and now I know how top remove the ignition cylinder on my 99TJ. My problem is the key won't turn at times. The key is worn so that may be my issue. What's the simplest way to "read" the code so I could get a new key cut to those specs?

    Great video. I just bought some new doors but can’t seem to find somewhere that sells the wafers to rekey them. Is there someplace you know of? The locksmith I talked to here sold them per bag for $50 which would cost a ton to get all the numbers needed

    Great videos. Really enjoyed the TJ restoration. I have a 2012 Jeep wrangler JK that I bought used. The previous owner only had 1 key so I only have one key to my jeep. Do I have to go through a dealer to get another key and pay 200 or so dollars for a key or is there an easier way? Can I buy one online and get it programmed at a locksmith? Thanks again, Love your channel!

    Since you're a locksmith, I have a question-
    I have an 89 S10, as you said it's a two-key system. I'm almost certain I've heard of folks rekeying them to one key for doors and ignition- is this possible?

    Dave i am a serious fan of yours as you know and i m stuck with a key issue on a fiat 500 classic. Unfortunately i have lost key and i need to understand a way to define a key from cylinder for ignition amd doors to cut a new key at locksmiths! Could you help me with explaining a cheap and nasty way that i can take a reading off the locks and go cut a new key as i m in. Iddle of nowhere to call locksmith and it will be very expensive?

    • @RedneckGarage
      @RedneckGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive had it about a year - for the price I figure its paid for itself. Been very trouble free for $1600 I don't place much faith in either parts or service really but if it works for 2 to 3 years compare that to 8 or 9K for a name brand.... easy math for me .

    This video is 7 years old are you still willing to cut a key if I send you my tumbler combination? It’s insane I can’t seem to get a locksmith to call me back where I live. I have re keyed my cylinder door locks an keyed my new ignition. I want to have more spare keys but when the hardware store copies a good key I have the key doesn’t work in the door or ignition. I guess I need to keep calling locksmith an maybe one will call me back.

    Question about this video. I also put full size doors on my TJ. I did get a copy of the key for the doors when I bought them. So I bought a new cylinder (Dorman 924-103) and through some difficulty I re keyed the new cylinder to the door key and lubed it with lithium grease. I did have to leave out the last wafer closest to the key entry out as it seems to get stuck sometimes, with some wiggling to get it to work again, especially it the key is flipped over. It this this more often with the last wafer in than not. Any suggestions

      @hockeygeek21 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I paid 1500 for it... I just buy them to part it out. This is my 8th jeep I've owned, being on a college budget it's some nice secondary income and I get to tear apart the vehicles I love and hear about people building up their jeeps with the parts I sell to them.

      I've sold jeep parts on ebay before but I prefer to use craigslist. That way ebay doesn't get any of the money and I don't have to deal with shipping

    • @RedneckGarage

      I hear ya - I would think you probably could ask more for some of the parts on Ebay as the audience is much larger esp small parts like AC controller ect.

      No, On the TJs it was optional on all models. Most 1997 - 2000 don't have it and most 2001 up do but not all.

    Dave,
    I have a key question. I have a 99 TJ. Just started having an issue that I think is caused by the ignition key. When I start the engine, the emergency brake light and the airbag light stays on the dash and there's a loud noise underneath when the clutch is in. I think the key is sticking in the 'start' position. I can back the key up a little and the dash lights go out and the noise stops. Have you heard of this and what would you recommend?

    • @RedneckGarage
      @RedneckGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jeff andrews possibly could be the ignition switch which is the electrical portion not the cylinder.

      What color is the head of the key ? The Sentry transponder key system was optional until 2007. If you have the grey headed key it has a transponder in it. If you have two keys present you can program a new one yourself. With just one you have to have a programmer and a pin code from Chrysler. You can also have a "clone key made" which basically copies the factory electronics and burns it on a new virgin clone key. You may find a locksmith to do it cheaper if you go by the dealership and get the 4 digit code from them from your vin # to give to a locksmith. You could order two keys from Ebay then get a locksmith to cut and program the two new ones after you give them the pin code. You are better off getting a factory style key than a clone key down the road. A clone key will run around 75.00 just because of the cost of the blank and burner equipment. If a customer gave me the blanks and the pin code I would probably charge $60.00 to cut and program if they were nice:) The transponder equipment is very expensive for us locksmiths to purchase so that is one reason it costs more. The dealerships have made millions on the "Security" key scam thru the last 10 or so years and it will only get more expensive as we go along.
