    So funny you posted about this. The ignition actuator pin in my TJ broke this week and I couldn't start my Jeep! The steering column on the TJ is less complicated to take apart to access the ignition pin and cylinder. The real problem we had was actually troubleshooting the problem because I originally thought my starter failed since everything powered on but nothing happened engine wise when I turned the key.
    We used a multi-meter to follow the electrical signal upstream from the starter and found it wasn't getting any signal. After checking all the fuses and relays were still good the only thing left was to confirm that there was indeed no electrical input whenever the key was turned in the ignition. ~$40 in parts later and taking apart the steering column the Jeep starts again!

    Question: Had a wiper switch replaced in my ‘93 Wrangler. Ran fine, but wouldstop running. If I re cycled the key it would run. If I flat bedded it for Not Running, the thing would run after it was dropped off. It appeared the jarring of it by being dropped off enabled it to run again. What can I do to get this thing reliable. I’ve a 304 V-8, stick.

    Great video! On my 94 YJ sometimes I will not start unless I adjust the tilt steering down, then it will work perfectly...adjust the tilt steering back up and drive. Does that mean the actuator pin is wearing? Would that be the pin that moves at around 9:00?

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Humm... not sure. The key won't turn? Or just won't start? Either way, It sounds like your tearing into the column to investigate.

    • @MikeM-ld1rw
      @MikeM-ld1rw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeepSolid The key turns freely and springs back to run freely...if there is some sort of actuator that sends the 12V to the starter solenoid when holding the key at the start position, it seams that that is wearing out or something. With the steering wheel tilted down, the start position works perfectly, engine cranks immediately....but with the steering wheel tilted up, no signal to the starter is given. Yes, I will have to get into the column this winter, but I was thinking maybe there is a actuator pin or something that is wearing?

    Dale, I had a no start issue 2.5 years ago and (emailed you about this) recently rewired, sensors, coil, battery, grounds, distributor replaced, etc. I just got the new ECU and was ready to go, fresh fuel etc. anyway, I turn the key, check engine light comes on yay! I turn the key forward, no joy. I checked everything again, all looks good. Switched some relays, etc. well I decided to jump the starter with a screw driver and it turns over! Doesn’t run, but I’m happy to hear it turn over. I’m thinking now it’s the ignition switch not sending a signal. Do you recommend I replace it? I’d sold the Yj for a couple years and two ladies owned it, got it back with starting issues and an aftermarket ignition. The entire ignition cylinder comes out with the key… that should have alarmed me more from the start of my issues but it ran for a few months so I wasn’t concerned. Now im thinking that may be the culprit. New cabin harness and bay harness as well. I’ve replaced the turn/high beam thingy and should have done the ignition back then too.

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. This is a tough one. Could be a number of things. Good the engine turns over, but not starting could be a ignition switch issue, wiring issue, or something like crankshaft positions sensor. If I were you, I would post a detailed explanation on Jeepforum. There you can get feedback from the thousands of Jeepers, and a lot have way more knowledge than me. I wish I could point you in the right direction, but wiring can be a nightmare...

      McCain Creative I broke mine to pieces, I replaced the whole column with a 50$ used part. It takes 30 mins to change out the column.

    95 YJ. Hit the key while in the cylinder with a rubber mallet a couple of times. My key got tougher and tougher to turn until it wouldn't turn at all. I did this and it's like new now. th-cam.com/video/gCpow3gvO-Q/w-d-xo.html

    So this has nothing to do with replacing or fixing an ignition switch. You fixed and replaced the ignition lock cylinder.

    Ok, I got to the point of 8:21 on the video and there was was no locking pin and the cylinder will not come out. What position is it supposed to be in? also, with out the locking pin would it move around in the housing and get stuck?
