    I'm writing this comment from a Windows 10 VM within CML!
    I played around with this tonight. It looks like the poor performance on startup is due to massive CPU usage. I spun up 8x Win 10 nodes (running 16 vCPUs on a 14c/28t chip) just to test, with the only difference being I gave them all 4GB instead of 2GB. The CML Lab Manager and Windows Task Manager both showed that they all stayed spiked at 100% CPU load for a number of minutes (even after the system was up and running) before they settled down. The best I could tell, it was more than one program, but Microsoft Defender was one of the biggest culprits that I saw.
    I also noticed that if you only give them 1 CPU core each, they will BSOD on startup. So, each Windows 10 VM you spin up is going to eat two full cores for a while. Fortunately, it eventually settles down.
    Thanks for the great video David! I never got Windows to work on 1.x. I'm so happy that I'll have a working Windows VM in order to easily test things. It's also the first time I got the external connection working right.
    You even got a shout-out from Keith Barker tonight for your great CML videos.

      Hey, this is an old comment but I too imported and am trying to run PA. I am importing WIndows right now to fix a problem I have...
      PA boots, and then you have to connect to the 'mgmt' port to configure it's IP interfaces, otherwise no interfaces appear in the CLI. How did you accomplish the initial configuration of your PA firewall? I can give it an IP, but even over an external connector (one where I can connect to other systems in CML just fine) I cannot connect to the PA FW, because none of it's interfaces are this 'mgmt' port.

    I tried this again, and I while I love having Windows as a host, I am not really happy with the high CPU usage of the Windows VM. It's staying spiked at 100% for a LONG time.
    So, while I was researching, I found that EVE-NG has a qcow2 image of Ubuntu Mate 20.04 for download (2GB). I installed this the same way (using your video as a guide), and I was able to get Ubuntu Mate up and running. This booted up much faster, and it consumed far less resources. RAM usage was only ~675MB (compared to about 2GB on Windows). CPUs were idle pretty much immediately (and I mean 0-1%, unlike the 20-30% on the Windows VM after about 15 minutes of 100%). And unlike the built-in Alpine Desktop image, you can actually see the network card settings within the VM.
    I'm going to keep both images, as I like having options. However, I'm thinking I'm going to like Ubuntu Mate when running the labs. I still can't thank you enough for this video. I'd never know how to add either image without your help.

It will be great if you can record a from steps by steps or "A to C" in how to do so. I have a lot of engineers friends interested on this topic. Hopefully this message gets to you. But I'm having trouble with copying the qcow2 file to the CML server. The windows machine from which I'm trying to upload it doesn't recognizes the scp command. Any idea's or thoughts to fix this?
    Edit: Figured out it was just a matter of installing Putty and using the command pscp -scp instead of just scp. Thanks anyways! :D

    Hi David,
    Thanks for this great video
    I tried to make it work, but like many users i see on different posts when i boot up the VM it tells me "no bootable device"
    I tried many different configurations (Image definitions in IDE/SATA/VirtualIO), nothing changes
    I read somewhere that the Cisco CML VM itself had to start in BIOS mode instead or EFI and that it would correct it but when doing so its the Cisco CML VM that tells me that there is no bootable device (here also i played with many settings in VMWare ESXi v8 (ide configuration of the hard drive of the CML VM)) but here too nothing changes)
    Any clue on how to get it work ? I think many users are facing the same issue
    Thanks !

      Just figured it out Guys :
      * The thing you need to do is the following : download an iso image of windows from microsoft's site (not an ova)
      * Pop a windows VM with the iso image mounted in your virtualization environnement and specifiy "BIOS" in the VM Options > Boot Options > Firmware Type
      * Once intalled, convert the vmdk file created in qcow2 (you have to download it from your virtual environnement and apply David's video command to launch the conversion)
      * once converted, the rest is like David's video
      Works for me.

    • @davidbombal
      @davidbombal  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is Cisco nodes and other bespoke devices that you add if I understand the developers correctly. So, you could have 20 Cisco devices and 10 of the inbuilt Ubuntu servers, but you cannot have 20 Cisco and 10 Juniper devices for example.

    • @davidbombal
      @davidbombal  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will be the same issue on all of them GNS3/EVE-NG/CML when you run the Windows VM on their VM. This is because they are nesting Windows within another VM (GNS3 VM / CML VM / EVE-NG VM). I typically use GNS3 locally on my laptop and then use an external VM in VMware (not running within the GNS3 VM) to add to my topologies. That way the VMs run quicker. So, the Windows VM is running locally alongside the GNS3 VM, not added within the GNS3 VM. That is quicker.
