I've been in the cnc side of the cabinetry industry for almost 10 years now. I was laid off in November and just haven't found anywhere that's a good fit to work for. Starting my own thing like this is super tempting.
You were the dude who convinced me when I was contemplating my cnc purchase. Still building my side hustle, but your tips have really helped
So cool! It's a process for sure, but so worth it!
I made the same mistake Friday on a tray and lid I was trying to make to test for the fit an design offsets. Unfortunately mine was with a 1/8 bit and 1/4 shank so the taper on the bit screwed up the project. I learnt the hard way that cut depth is very important to pay attention to especially with tapered bits.
Just got my Shapeoko 5 up and running and am excited to start selling! Your channel has been a huge motivator

Andy. I spent hours watching your videos. They exciting and inspiring. I ordered the 1F Foreman Elite 48x48 last week. I also went to Bentonville and visited with Dan at PWN. I bought the 110 volt water cooled spindle. I’m try to get all the tools I’ll need before the CNC arrives. Can you assist in additional accessories I should prioritize? Assortment of bits? The sanding spindle you use on your drill press? I bought the tool setter. The XY probe. Thank you.

I like the part where you talk about your mistakes. Would be nice to hear more of them ;-) Also, maybe how to optimize routing. I mean, the balance between nice and time one routing of a projecct takes. And, one more, how to do best routing to avoid sanding. Finally, I am almost ready to start selling, there are 3 options. I will not be successful and hardly sell, or I sell nice amount that I can do myself, or I sell too much and have to outsource. The last one I hope for and in that case, I will at home do prototyping and custom projects and the rest outsource.

Andy, question, do you ship internationally and if you do, who do you use. I live in Cambodia and am having a hard time finding shipping costs that make sense. Hard to justify a $30 item that ships for $28. Any help on this would be great.
Ive built 4 CNC machines. First one was a rebuild of an old shopbot back in 2006. Resources for hobby CNC were all but non existent back then.
I've found that I enjoy building the machines as much as I enjoy using them. I have an LLC and run a legitimate side business, and the extra money is definitely nice!

Well said, I’m looking to get started and I’ve been soaking up info like this as much as I can. I’m still in the what machine to buy stage.
Do you have or know of any resources to help me decide on what machine to buy? I have never used a cnc before. I’d like to get something with at least 4’x4’ so I’m not handcuffed because of size. I would consider something larger if the price made sense. My plan it to start a side gig so it pays for itself and I can use it for my family and I. If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate your input. As an idea of my price range, I’ve been looking at the shapeoko 5 4x4. This is right at the top of my budget. Thank you in advance for anything you can offer to help me get started on this journey.

Any suggestions for a machine to get started? My though is to start on a smaller bench top hobby CNC and then sell it if/when I out grow it and buy a larger machine.
There is a very good resale market if you keep your eye out.

Should have finished with the band saw and a flush trim but instead on trying to cu through.
I've done this many of times. But not everyone has a band and an expensive 2" flush trim bit and a router.
I wish you could make money just because you have this stuff. I've got a 5 foot by 10 foot water jet sitting there in my shop that I advertise all the time. And I might get one job a month...

As a woodworker my leaning is to buy a 4 x 4 CNC, but it looks like a CO2 laser would be more profitable.
I’ve been weight those odds myself. I started with a laser in mind but now I’m on team cnc. I jumped ships when I started competing prices and now more so because of abilities. It does seem like there’s more $ to be made with laser
I just bought a high end diode laser, after spend some time prototyping my idea and learning on a low end diode. I think CNC routers and lasers can complement each other and each has its strengths and weaknesses. I plan to get a CNC router in the future as my maker-product ideas progress. I think the laser is probably easier to start with and maybe a little less messy. There is a significant software skill set to be developed for both and what you learn for one can be applied somewhat to the other. In the end these are just tools to support your passion to make some things you and hopefully others will like.
Hey Steve! It really depends on what you want to do. But in general, the learning curve of a laser is lower and those skills translate into a CNC router well. I will say that the CNC laser market is more saturated because of this. With a CNC laser you're really not going to do much "woodworking" as you will with a CNC router. Compare a CNC router to the likes of a typical hand router when it comes to the things you can make. Hope this helps.
Where do you get your wood? Thick mahogany must be $$$$.
I've got a couple local places that I get it from. I very rarely buy wood at retail prices, but it takes time to locate these suppliers.

Here in the US, CNC is the general term for CNC routers. Nonetheless, you can make money with any type of CNC. So what type of CNC is irrelevant.

Fake. You can't make that kind of money with a desktop CNC . He gets the sales from his social media presence which is a far more profitable business.
I know its not fake because I've done it.
Maybe 6 years ago before 25 million people had desktop cnc's. Now I have friends with 5x9 commercial cnc's that can carve 10 pieces to my one. With less effort due to loaders and vacuum tables. Now the small cnc's are just simply tools in our shops that help. @@AndyBirdBuilds

I bought most of my bits from him, l really didn’t know anything about the CNC and I am still learning. What I liked about IDC is that his tutorials are slow and step by step great for the way my brain works, I also really like Paw Paws channel his tutorials are easy to follow along, I have made a few things but mostly I just give away as gifts, I haven’t made a penny as of yet 😂
When spring gets here I’m going to be building a 20x30 shop for my woodworking hobbies, and hopefully make things to actually sell. And for tutorials on my ORTUR I like The Louisiana hobby guy channel
