    It is difficult to express just how good Tom Anto's review of the Black Magic Pocket Cinema 4k actually is.
    First the review is detailed, yet totally clear, nothing irrelevant is included.
    Second, Tom's delivery, is a joy, with his asides, and plain language - including his accented english. Clearly he is a terrific speaker (lecturer). Always respectful of the viewer, his overview is superbly competent, and does not ever appear to be selling any product.
    Third, his evaluation and commentary is always totally practical. No wasted words or any BS whatsoever.
    One can and ought to learn a lot from his reviews, not only about the video equipment, but also on how to do a first class review.
    Thanks a million !

    Great review... but FYI, you're NOT supposed to attach a top handle and a ton of stuff to that top mount - Blackmagic says it's not reinforced, and you do NOT want to snap the top of the camera body. So just put a cage on there... From the Pocket 4K manual, pg 22: "NOTE The 1/4” mount on the top of the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K should only be used for lightweight accessories such as small microphones. Do not support the weight of the camera via the top 1/4” mount by using accessories like a screw in camera handle in conjunction with a heavy lens. This will damage the 1/4” mount which will not be covered under warranty. Do not subject the mount to excessive lever force, such as mounting a heavy accessory on an extension arm. To mount heavier accessories, we strongly recommend using a camera cage designed for the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K that attaches to both the top and bottom 1/4” mount simultaneously."

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I know. Most of the time i just have the handle on there and I do use a cage that I will be showing in a future video.

    • @bobuk5722
      @bobuk5722 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ok, true, but use common sense. When you need a compact system and with a light lens there is unlikely to be a problem. With heavy accessories then it's a no no. BobUK.

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When he was supporting the weight of the monitor and the mic with the camera dangling with a little Panasonic 12-35 I was okay with the layout, but each time he started grabbing the camera it self, and more importantly when he shifted it to the shoulder rig this exact same thought ran through my head. A half cage would be a good solution for this, but the seercam cube p4k cage (if it ever gets released) with it's lens wrap around design in it's simplest form (no sides) would be perfect for this setup.

      it wasn't a big drop. I had my gimbal on the ground with the camera on it and it tipped over and fell on the ground. Both the gimbal and camera/lens survived with minor scratches. Wouldn't recommend dropping it from a big height even though this little camera is pretty sturdy.

      DIAR, they named it cinema camera, right. But i personally woudn't use it for that kind of art, if i could afford an Ursa Mini Pro for instance. It is waaay more cinematic. I consider P4K for some untrained-eye customer audience - weddings maybe, but i dont shoot weddings) Pretty poor color science for my eye. Low dynamic range for the documentary. You just can't get a nice cinema camera body for only $1000. But! If they ever produce a P4K with UMP sensor-type + OLPF, i would definitely say - yes!

      @@TomAntos I liked it very much. I especially liked you did not just talk about the camera itself (though that was quite informative, too) but that you added the extras, like the batteries, the handles, and such. It is very helpful.
      For example, I use the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4k 2 and go from that to the Blackmagic Video Assist 4k, which is sitting on a desk. But you gave me the idea that I could get the SmallRig Monitor Mount Kit and keep the Video Assist right on the top of the Studio Camera, so I could keep everything together. • @ezecreative
      @ezecreative 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a suggestion. I just feel like a lot of new artist think the camera will make the shot. Like I did when I first bought a canon XL1 a decade plus ago, then I saw some of your videos and that helped me a ton. But I always get asked on facebook, WHAT CAM SHOULD I BUY, I want my shots to look like this or that. I keep trying to explain that it's all about lighting but it seems people think it's actualy the cameras.

      Plus I have more videos like that coming out soon. Unfortunately most people are not interested in seeing these videos. Most of the requests are for me to review every new camera that comes out each month which i personaly find boring. I did want to do a video about the BMPCC4K because it's a camera that I personally got really excited about.

    We have been shooting with this new pocket cinema for a month now and I agree with all you said :) Its superb image quality and the price is unbelievable.
    One more thing tho, if you use some normal cheap port micropohone without any self energy enhancing (dunno how its called in english) the basic input for the 3,5 mic jack is so low its basicallly unusable. So thats the only downside aside from what you said, that we encountered.
    Thanks for nice vid, long time fan here, tho I wasnt around you channel for few years:) its so nice that you still do so many tutorials and informative videos, big up

      Thanks! Yes the 3.5mm jack is only to be used with powered mics since it doesn't provide phantom power. I only said that the mini XLR connection provides phantom power to mics.

    Hey Tom I just got my BMPCC 4k. Did you have or can you make a video explaining the difference between 4k LUTS, Proxy etc? I am new into the 4k and I want to understand this correctly. Thanks man, you are doing a great job here.

    @Tom Antos - At 30:11 what is going on with the crazy bokeh in that series of shots? It looks really cool as a special effect. Is that a Canon or Nikon mount to MFT shift/tilt adapter, a real shift tilt lens (set of lenses) on speedbooster, or a Canon/Nikon mount lens baby on a speedbooster? And it's another great, unbiased video from someone with experience. Thanks Tom!

    Love this review. Was planning on using it as a B-cam to upm4.6k, but with all the info in this, I’m betting I’ll use it as much or more than ump. Is it cool if I completely copy your smallrig setup? Good.

    Hey loved the video! What was the shoulder mount that you used? Can't see it on the kit list you put in the description. I'm guessing any shoulder mount that is sturdy would work?

    Thank you for a great review. I'm actually planning to buy this camera and Rokinon micro four thirds mount lenses. Have you very tried this combination? Or you are using rokinon EF lenses with speed booster? Would like to know your opinion on the lens setup.

  • @JamesStevensonPhoto

    Greetings Tom! Quick question - do you use this largely with cinema / video specific lenses, or the lens lineup available for micro 4/3 photography? Thanks so much for taking time to post the content you do, tons of interesting and informative stuff for someone like myself coming from a photography background.

    • @TomAntos
      @TomAntos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I shoot almost all the time with my rokinon cine DS lens kit and the speedbooster. After all it's a cinema camera so why would I use stills lenses. I have used MFT lenses from Panasonic like the Lumix Vario lenses but focusing on those is not the easiest.

    • @JamesStevensonPhoto
      @JamesStevensonPhoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomAntosThanks for the reply Tom! I was mainly asking as I'm building my understanding of video and film making tools as my work shifts more from photography to video professionally, though I'm still learning which gear - lenses for instance - might apply well to both disciplines. I'm about to sell on my micro 4/3 gear as I no longer use it for photography but wondered if I'd regret selling all the lenses.

    • @cmdr.shepard
      @cmdr.shepard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's better to use non MFT lenses on any Blackmagic camera. But if you also do photo, manual cine lenses will not be easy for you.
