      Creative North I agree with you about purchasing a RED camera. My URSA Mini 4.6K is constantly out performing my RED Raven. In fact my RED has been in California getting repaired for the last 2 weeks due to issues!! The images you’ve displayed from the BMPC4K are truly cinematic and my trained eye could’ve easily mistaken it for a larger more expensive camera. Thanks for posting 💪🏾

    I find it fascinating that Creative north and Brandon Lee are the only two people who actually USE the equipment they talk about on the field and show us how they work with the tools, tell us the honest truth and don't just sell out, it's really refreshing and i hope it's the mold of these type of tech reviews regarding camera equipment moving forward, there is a few solid guys who do the stationary reviews AMAZING, but god do i love the ones like this that are actually being used for WORK.

    You really seem to know what you're talking about. No hype, no unnecessary superlatives. Just a man who has done his craft for a long time and can choose the right tool for his job. Respect.
    I got a BMPCC 4K and I'm planning to use it on a Ronin S with the DJI follow focus, but I'm having problems balancing all that with an on board Samsung T5 and Small Rig cage. Are you able to balance yours without counterweights?
    Also, what kind of lens gears are those?
    Thanks for the quality content, mate. Subbed as soon as I found your channel.

      Thanks Un Tal Galvis! I haven't got the motor from DJI need to look into that! But so far haven't had that big of trouble balancing except with front heavy lenses. But I don't use those, try to keep the ronin rig as light as possible cause it's a beast. Usually use the easyrig if I'm doing the Sigma 18-35 for instance

    You deliver so much more quality content than most TH-cam videographers, and it lies within your great storytelling through editing, composition and very good color grading (which only influence each other greatly). And I like that letterboxing. And Scandinavia.

      I actually don't because I have a certain image quality that I try to archive and that's the only one that fits into my workflow and quality box :D Would consider the GH5S but format and in camera processing would be downsides of that one. Upside would be the size being even smaller.

      Decent. On a big easyrig setup it’s fine but I would like there to be a battery grip solution. I like how tilta has made that and follow focus as one thing. That’s better. Wide Zooms on BMPCC4k do you have any direct or second hand feedback on any of these lenses? Sigma 10-20mm, Tokin 11-20mm, Canon 10-18mm, Canon 10-22mm Want a lense that can do 18-24mm focal lenght

    • @Jonnyvonwallstrom
      @Jonnyvonwallstrom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any full frame one could make sense to me, I use the speedboster ultra. But I think if you go wider than 18 on a speedboster you start to get too wide. If it's a MFT lens then 10 starts to feel a bit wide when moving around. You get a bit too much distortion I feel.

    I'm finally going to get one. I think. I'm going to team it up with my S1H. What do you think? I'm on the fence about selling the S1H to get more BMPCC 4k or 6k cam. I never shoot in 6k with my S1H. I mostly shoot 422 10-bit ALL-I. I know ProRes RAW is coming later this month but then that means spending another $700 on an Atomos Ninja V. I'd rather have RAW while spending less money. Thoughts anyone?

  • @RossAdams
    @RossAdams 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Jonny. I'm busy doing your grading course & it's been so helpful in opening up Resolve for me. I've also got the BMPCC 4k. When shooting in ProRes I've seen it recommended to start with the Blackmagic Pocket 4k to Extended Video v4 lut. Are you using it in your workflow for when grading the footage?

    • @Jonnyvonwallstrom
      @Jonnyvonwallstrom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate! Awesome to hear! I use the extended video a lot. Feel like that's nice to start from. Pretty similar to what the C300 looks like I feel. So you would just work a bit different. I don't do much noise reduction on the pocket though. It has such a nice grain that you can actually shoot in raw and just keep the grain instead of adding it as well. If you want grain. But if you want it as clean as possible you can just go for prores and not add grain or do noise reduction as well. I find that when you do noise reduction in resolve it falls apart quicker than if you don't. And prores in pocket already does noise reduction in a superior way than I've been able to do in the program if you take the time to render into consideration as well.

    How do you avoid vignetting while using the 12-35, at the wide end, along with your variable ND filter?

    • @Jonnyvonwallstrom
      @Jonnyvonwallstrom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm haven't noticed any strong vignetting and I usually shoot around 12 on the lumix lens. Some vignetting on 12mm when I use the speedbooster ultra with the sigma 18-35 though. But not a big issue for me. Rather have ultra than XL because it's better for the full frame lenses.

Then I tool a cheeseplate and a nato mount and put some velcro on the batteries and cheeseplate to make it work. That was perfect. No need for battery mount. Works on an easyrig but too bulky for other rigs I think. Probably better off going with a bottom mounted v-lock for that.

    Super great review! Of all the reviews I've seen (and I'v been scrooling through a lot of them since it was announced) this video was the first one that truly made me certain it's not just a toy camera pretending to be a big boy, but actually an amazing and well thought through tool for filmmaking!
    I've been sitting on my hands waiting to get enough evidence this is the camera for me as a fresh indie filmmaker, and thanks to your solid work I now feel that even if I find out that filmmaking isn't a thing for me in the end, I'm still gonna have an amazing camera to play around with that didn't burn up my wallet!
    Also really great to see some scandinavian environment since this is where I'm gonna use it.

    Really been enjoying your videos. Thanks for all the work you do! Curious as to what you think about the rolling shutter in this camera. It's one of the main reasons I've wanted the Ursa... you just don't notice it at all... but a lot of the videos I've seen shot handheld on the Pocket 4k are suffering from major wobble. I'm sure a monopod or shoulder rig/stabilizer/loupe would help, but what about us folks who love handheld? Should we just step up to the Ursa or do you think a loupe is the answer?

    • @Jonnyvonwallstrom
      @Jonnyvonwallstrom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah there’s a lot of rolling shutter! Not something that I think has an affect on how I shoot but for anyone concerned about that it would be a negative thing for sure. I think the Ursa is a fantastic camera for shoots when you have bigger camera bag and don’t rely on low light capability. But for run and gun I’d go with the pocket.

    Thank you for this video...very helpful and much appreciated. • @Jonnyvonwallstrom
      @Jonnyvonwallstrom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm I would test it out to see, but for me it makes sense to do wild recordings after the scene is over. I usually want to have a separate lav recorder like the lectrosonics pdr on the main characters and then a directional mic on the camera as backup. Tascam has cheaper version of the lectrosonics pdr as well. Then I try to record as much field recordings as I remember. But a good practice is to always record 1-2 min of the ambience for each scene. Then approach sound recordings just like b-roll after the scene is over. Otherwise a Soundly subscription is also really awesome!

    • @WestonJamesPalmer
      @WestonJamesPalmer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Creative North awesome! Thank you for the answer. Is there a way to connect a lav and shotgun mic to the BMPC4k at the same time? I ask because I would like to build a better run and gun for docs.....I’m with you on recording sound after scenes for shorts. Didn’t know if you could somehow run 2 xlrs into the camera.

    • @Jonnyvonwallstrom
      @Jonnyvonwallstrom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the only way I see it working would be if you use a shotgun like the Sennheiser MKE600 which can be using TRS and then a lav via XLR or vice versa. But you would have to test if using TRS gets you worse noise level. I would go a different way though and use a lav recorder on talent and a shotgun mic because it gives you an advantage to have everything recorded all the time, even when the camera isn't shooting. That's a safety for me. Otherwise you might miss what someone is saying. For me that's a crucial thing that the closest mic to the talent is always on, but then the shotgun is on the camera for safety or when spontaneous situations happen with more than one person.

    • @WestonJamesPalmer
      @WestonJamesPalmer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, now I get it....you are right, the Lectrosonics pdr is a game changer and then I will just run the MKE 600 on camera. Once again, I really appreciate your channel. Thanks again for the help!

      Hehe maybe, I have both and even though the GH5 is a good camera in most situations. It has a weird sharpness and de-noising thing going on at higher ISO. Making it look unnatural. And then the format is also a bit of pain in the ass in terms of workflow. However it's a camera that creates great images, but both cameras have their downsides. Your comment on the LCD made me think, wouldn't it be nice if you could detach the LCD completely from the camera and it had a built-in HDMI input, power jack and 1/4" 20 thread on the bottom and side. Something like that since it is a decent size touch display that will be mostly wasted when using a rig, which I imagine most people buying this camera will use, and needing an external monitor.

They could do a USB-C Viewfinder, Ethernet, wifi, or connect your phone via USB for LTE live streaming... Want more Audio input, connect a external audio interface. Ok you WILL need to use external power because of the powerdraw as well. It all things they could do... It limited only by the CPU of the camera and the USB-C bus speed. But will they spend time on any of these items ? I don't think so... They have a lot of work on the UI I would like them to do before any of those things. For the touchscreen feature, they might actually do it if they release a new monitor with that capability. I''m actually a bit confused at how thing work at BM... I mean, they gave us a pretty amazing camera for the price... They didn't have to give us a Powered XLR input... They could have made it an external dongle. They could have got rid of the audio in/out port and also depend on external USB-C interface like on mobile phone these days and try to reduce the cost(I actually wouldn't have minded it). Might be true, but if the mic doesn't input enough DB into the camera you will get higher noise pattern. My guess is that that's what's happening if they use same pre-amp. But even bigger issue for me is that any TRS mic is crap if you compare to the Sennheiser 416 or even the Sennheiser mke600 (which also has TRS). You have physics against you. A shotgun mic needs length in order to pick up more focused audio. I have the D3 Pro mic to test out and it's a good on camera mic. For what it is. But very hard to compare to the XLR mics in terms of pro quality. I find myself just using the internal mics rather than putting the D3 on. But when I plan things to shoot I use the sanken Cos 11-D lav instead of on camera mic.

      I think I've found my solution now! Haven't been able to put it together yet. But I feel the best way if you're not powering off of the ronin-s for instance. Is to do it through a monitor or a battery mounted to a monitor. There are mainly three alternatives as I see it. 1. Using a monitor with a Sony BP-U plate (then having a SWIT battery with D-Tap on that battery plate). 2. Using a monitor with a Sony L series battery plate with a SWIT battery with a 12v out on it. 3. Using a monitor with a 12v power output that has for instance a Sony L series battery. I think which one is up to what you have already. Feelworld is sending me their FW568 which seems to be a cheap alternative. Not sure how the screen holds up yet but that would work with both alternative 2 and 3.

      Well doesn't really matter if they look, behave and grade the same. Not so interested in paper spec. I look at real world testing for conclusions. And from my experience having both cameras the ursa under performs in terms of cleanest image. Even if it has a tiny micro latitude gain that doesn't matter if it creates worst looking image. And it does above 400 iso. Up to 400 I'd say it's negligible in the difference. Plus any DP that needs that extra latitude should probably revise that title. The only time you would be in need of that if when you don't know how to expose a shot :D In raw and especially blackmagic RAW ursa outperforms though. But in prores HQ they're very close, and once pocket gets braw it will be evened out.

    Does Netflix accept this camera? I know that it's not listed on their site but doesn't this beast meet all the requirements?

      Based on what I read and saw before, they made some exception for documentary.

    If you do a lot of docus I highly recommand to get a B4 mount for the Mini Pro and a nice Leica or Fujinon B4 lens. Its a little hassle to fix the backfocus with the shim kits going like try-error try-error try-error try-error try-error ... BUT in the end you get a horny Parfocal lens of wide focal length - I use a Fujinon 14-144 - though keep in mind that you have to use a croped sensor. Ursa Mini Pro: best camera on the market price/value/quality wise! Salute man. By the way, would love to go on a shot with you, maybe some day.

    I love blackmagic, all my films for the past few years have been shot on them. But I cannot get over the form factor on the bmpcc 4K. It just doesn’t seem to take itself seriously lol.

      Haha I can admit it looks weird. But in my hand I've got zero trouble with the build. The main problem I have with it is the screen. Amazing screen that can't be used because it just sits there, looking pretty. Useless when you can't tilt it.

      @@Jonnyvonwallstrom Yet somehow the a7rII screen is worse lol. Why be able to move a screen up and down but not out to the side? It gives the illusion of functionality XD.
