I agree with most selection if not all you've made for this video. I do however think an important point to make is how much of a rubbish time it is to buy a new PC at the given moment. Skylake just releasing, DDR4 being expensive, new GPU's around the corner. Going for a used build now with all the enthusiasts swapping to the skylake platform might be a great choice since a lot of high end rigs that are still extremely noteworthy will be sold for an extremely low price compared to performance.
+ScrattleGG Feels to me like it always is a shitty time to buy PC hardware. Either theres something big new right around the corner or price drops are incoming. Ultimately one has to bite the bullet at one point and live with it.
+ScrattleGG Pascal won't be releasing until most likely Q2/3 next year. As far as GPUs are concerned, I think it's fine purchasing a high end card such as the 390/970/980. Maybe even the 980Ti as resale will still probably be fairly high even at Pascal release.
ya me to i have been working on this build but idk if i should wait for holidays when it goes down or just get it i dont know how much pc parts drop over big holidays pcpartpicker.com/list/q6Nhjc this is my build
Why a 960 and not a 380? the 380 performs a bit better and has 2g extra vram. and they are pretty much the same price in the UK with the 380 sometimes being cheaper. So seriously why not a 380?
+Infinite Zero I don't see where he mentions the 380 being $270, and yes he says they are the deals he saw, but in general the 380 is the same price or cheaper than the 960 in the UK and the UK's prices are not too different from the US's (without taking into account exchange rate) so atm the 960 is $170 but its £160 without much change, but the 380 is £155 so im gonna guess roughly 160-170 in the US. But that is me going off UK prices and guestimating for the US.
Some issues: R9 380 > GTX 960 2GB R9 390 - best performance/price ratio and cheaper > GTX 970 Come on, the NVIDIA bias is getting out of hand. Where are all the AMD cards?
My first thought as soon as I saw the GPU choices, the 390 is trading blows with the 970 in most games, and pulls ahead at higher res, and is cheaper in some cases, but they still chose the 970? Even if none of those reasons matter, Nvidia treated their customers like idiots when the 3.5Gb thing came out, plus they lied about specs before it came out, and they're getting away with that every time someone chooses their card over an equally if not more capable AMD. Linus y u do dis ;_;
theres really no other component that was better than both those parts at the time, the 980 ti wasn't the flagship because of the titan x but the titan x was also $300 to $400 more than the 980 ti
I get that a lot of your audience is US based, but we're both Canadian, and you're based in Canada, don't leave us out in the cold. Personally I also put a SSD into every build, even the $500 builds.
+AlmightyGTR GTX 960 is slightly better than an R9 380, and a 960 is only $170 too (in America on Amazon) so I really have no idea why you'd go with the R9 380 unless you're all AMD, which is fine but I'd choose performance over brand. If you went for the 4GB models of both then the 960 is still barely cheaper on Amazon...
+MarioDragon What are you talking about? 960 trades blows with 270x. 380 is about 30-35% percent faster than 960 for the same price. Linus is a sellout, so I don't listen to his preferences anymore.
+Lizrad Sceptile Man, Shut up with i5 processor there's no difference I'm running sli 980 ti with 8350 overclocked to 5.4 ghz and I have no bottleneck. So stop! Saying i5.
Erghh builds, you recommend a gtx 960 over a r9 380 in the budget build, 860k cpu choice is okay-ish but that's it, no cpu upgrade path... would of went with intel's pentium g3258 dual core cpu so down the line u could upgrade to a i5 or i7 cpu, gtx 970 over the r9 390? Okay... understandable on that psu but still would of recommended the 390 easily. Video sponsored by Nvidia.... Trololol
+Jill Valentine Going Haswell Pentium would be stupider there are Skylake Pentiums and the upgrade path is irrelevent you won't be upgrading until next gen cpu's come out anyways. But yeah he puts 960 over the cheaper faster 380 and says the 390 cost more than the 970 yet its cheaper in USA & Canada and its performance at 1440p is similar to 970 @1080p.
Brandyn G Who cares about skylake, barely 7% improvement in IPC and how is upgrading irrelevant? Stick with that dual core pentium for a month or 2, save some dosh and grab yourself a i5 4690k or an i7 4790k.
Hey Linus, in the last built you opt for the OCZ 180 as SSD. Why the sudden change to that brand? I mean usually you advice Samsung for SSD and a long time ago Intel. Anything special about that brand? Or just similar to Samsung but cheaper?
+LiteGaming I've never had a problem with Samsung SSDs. Heck, we use the things in our 24/7/365 server deployments without issues. They've been some of the fastest and most reliable SSDs we've used, even the 840 and 850 Evos used in some of our lower-end deployments.
LiteGaming But if the OCZ is pretty similar to Samsung shouldnt they have similar problems? I'm actually planning to get another SSD drive cause the 250gb one i got is full. And been doubting between the 480gb OCZ one and 500gb 850 samsung one since they are similarly priced around 150-160.
Come on Linus... You dif mentioned the R9 390, i admit that but... It's cheaper and better than the 970... You should have put the 390 and mentionned the 970 for those who absolutely want an nvidia card in logic... I dont know if you are sponsored by nvidia and i dont want to know either, Give to the people the best price-performance choices.. Specialy since its for christmas for most people And NO im not an amd fanbo, i just say that we are talking about budget here so Linus shouldn't put ANY personnal/overall preferences in the video, just the best price-performance choices and im saying that i'm not an amd fanboy because as soon as someone defends amd, a lot of people rush to say "amd fanboy" and i know for sure that some are gonna say that It doesnt bother me personnally since i'm not buying a computer and i really like Linus but this is just.. No
+Dry Cereal Master Race If he was sponsored by Nvidia he wouldn't have even mentioned the 390. He clearly stated that those were guidelines. Plus the 970 at the time was the cheaper one, that and you could OC it on a 500W PSU, something you can't do with a 390.
Infinite Zero i did said that i dont want to know if he is sponsored or not right ? And most cards dont need more power than they take in factory settings for overclock, only heavy overclocking needs more power since they put the power draw a little above than what it really needs to avoid problems due to not enough power in factory settings
Keen W That linus should have said the 390 instaed of the 970 since it's cheaper and better in factory settings (then for most people because not everybody is an overclocker) but forget about it, as soon as someone defends amd everybody hates them already
Linus Nvidia fanboy confirmed. Oh wait we already know that... There are a few good AMD cards on the market at the moment including the R9 390 that performs about the same as the 970 but has 8GB of VRAM.
The 390/380 are a bad choice imo. They do cost about the same as a GTX 960/970, but they are based on a last gen chipset which is why they can't even make real use of the extra VRam and while they are a few percent faster the power savings are the main factor imo. For the 960vs380 we are talking 120W vs 190W and for the 970vs390 it's a whopping 145W vs 275W. That's an insane difference for not even more than 10% performance difference, not to mention the heat output. And Nvidia simply has the better drivers. There are some programms that have problems running AMD cards and Nvidia gives you almost weekly driver updates to always ensure the best performance. Maybe next gen AMD.
Tristan Berke No, thank you for commenting that and making this guy comment. He's just making himself look like those people with ego issues. Anyone just gives advice and he automatically thinks it's and insult and become butthurt. Yes, butthurt.
Have you ever done a budget setup for content creation? I would be interested to see a machine optimized for video editing/production. Sorry if you have already done this and I just can't find it. Great video!
(Watching this in 2023, reminiscing on the 4790k build I did months before this came out) "Avoid the killer network card" THANKS LINUS, THAT'S GREAT ADVICE! AND RIGHT ON TIME TOO! Seriously, he was so right and I wish I knew that before I built mine. Memory leak issues and shoddy.
+Matthew Heitmann It doesn't matter really. He says you could use the 390 if you wanted to for the $1000 PC, and the 960 was because it was $170. And you honestly wanted him to use a Fury X for the $2000 one?
+Matthew Heinemann if people are going to cry about linus' preferences then watch someone else. in previous videos he has already stated he prefers nvidia cards. if you prefer amd cards then good on you.
+Infinite Zero he says it, but how many people do you think that will reach? This guy is damaging PC gaming by telling people rubbish and I am sure he doesn't give nearly as much of a damn about PC gaming as the people buying the cards. To him its just "recommend this make more money" while people end up with weaker value and the company making the better value cards goes out of business leaving us with a monopoly.
+Infinite Zero amd is not a partner (according to linusmediagroup. com) and also just choosen, because in this pricerange there was not an intel 4 core cpu
+cocacoladog10 No it's not did you even look at the prices no because you CONVENIENTLY ignored the numbers on screen to hate. You also CONVENIENTLY did not here him say that you could use a 390 if you wanted?
+Xavier Lim Did you hack into the bank and look at the transaction records or spy on LMG? Honestly if he was paid he would not have said anything about the 390.
The PC i'm thinking about getting is $650USD. Specs: Asus R7 360 2GB Graphics Card 2×4GB G.SKILL Ares 1600MHz DDR3 AMD A8-7650K Black Edition APU 1TB WD Blue Hard Drive Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3 FM2+ AMD mATX Motherboard LG DVD Combo Drive 500W Antec VP500P Power Supply Zalman R1 ATX Mid Tower Chassis Microsoft Windows 10 64bit + It comes with Fallout 4 and a Roccat Ravio Mousepad.
You could probably play Overwatch with a 5 year old GPU or even older, it's not a really demanding game. Not especially great graphics (not that it's ugly!), maps are kinda small and not super-detailed, no environmental destruction etc.
Go walk around in simlim level 4. A bunch of vendors sell entry-level gaming rigs for 700-800 sgd. ask for just the parts without construction, and no windows, and you should be good. go home, build it yourself, and install windows yourself.
I just bought 3 of the cheap systems you suggested. These will be my kids' first computers. They are excited to be able to put the computer together with daddy, so thanks for your effort putting together the video. Also, I got everything off Amazon and used your affiliate code! Not sure how much you get, but hopefully a coffee? Anyway, big fan of your group! Keep the videos coming.
I have to agree with Linus on the "Just Game" build. Though I switched out the 960 for a 950... but I did get the 860K. People building this computer aren't exactly looking at upgradeability and futureproofness. They want to be able to play all the games at at least medium settings. Certain games (like Far Cry 4) will only play on quad cores. This is a great first build for many people.
Everyone with any sense would lol, and 390 over 970 too, AMD are finally being competitive and Linus shuts them out... This is the reason AMD are struggling, people with sway are ignoring their great offerings.
I recently built my sister a gaming PC for her 18th birthday. This is her very first gaming rig so her expectation was not as high as mine. We were able to salvage some parts that were used from my bin, garage sale, and generous friend donation. Overall, she spent $280 on her rig. What I had for her is AMD FX8350 8 core processors, XFX AMD R9 290, 750w PSU, Gigabyte 990FX UD3, mid tower case with two intake and 1 fan outtake, Coolmaster aftermarket heatskin/fan, and a single 1080p monitor. At the moment, she can run witcher 3 at 60FPS on high/ultra and most importantly, GTA5 (her favorite game) at similar option and frames. This is an upgrade from her PS3 so it was drastic improvements. She was thinking of getting PS4 and a laptop for media creation like TH-cam but I stopped her and recommended to go full on PC lol. After all this, she messaged me back a week after to tell me that she's not gonna go back to console. She also mentioned that she will be plugging a secondary monitor to help her streaming and using video editor.
WTF. Now I remember why I left PC and went to Mac pro's . i went to upgrade my wife's MacBook Hd to SSD, and I swear there were so many and too many options to build a PC. they were brining in "new" hardware as people were browsing. day over day this is the business, way too many different things and nothing is meant to work well with each other. no headaches thanks.
so jealous of those prices .. here it's at around a 30-40% price increase compared to the US .... on almost anything.. altough AMD GPU's are cheaper then the equivalent nvidia cards, with a 75$ price difference
+Gravity I have GTX 970 and i can say it is really solid card even for 1440p gaming on 60FPS. I checked many benchmarks and games, and in almost all benchamrks it performed better, and in many games 970 performed better or as good. It is also cooler and more silent, and has all the NVIDIA sweets like Gameworks for many games. For example in PassMarks tests, it is about 10 graphics cards higher, almost par to GTX titan, compared to 390/390X. which sits little higher than GTX 770.
Gravity Rated by whom? If you check out PassMark price/performance chart, it actually has better rating than 390. Also here in Finland GTX 970 costs about 350€ (380$) and 390 560€ (600$), that is huge difference, and seeing that they have almost the same performance, 390 has shitty value.
haha Love how Linus goes "A combo PSU and Case aren't worth the metal there in" although i've had my thermaltake for over 3 years. But i am gonna get a new one soon!
Just got my corsair carbide 540 case not to long ago and love it, was a huge upgrade from my cheapo $35 case i used to stay in my budget when building my current set up. So much more room in general and awesome cooling for not to bad of a price.
Source 210 user here! It really is a very good case. Will have had it for a year now and other than lacking SSD mounting on the back, it has had every feature I have needed. Although USB 3 would have been nice. But the 210 Elite has that.
Is this a good build for a beginner PC gamer? CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6 Core Processor. CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper. Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX. I built my brother and me AMD rigs this past holiday. For his, I went with a an AMD Athlon X4 860K, an Asrock Extreme4+, 8GB Team Vulcan ram, an R7 370, a WD Blue tb, and a rosewill semimodular power supply for that minimalistic design to make it all fit into a MicroATX case nicely. For Mine, I went with an FX 8320, an Asrock Fatal1ty Killer, 16GB Team Dark ram, an R9 380X, an OCZ Arc 120gb ssd, a Hitachi deskstar 2tb, a Corsair Hydro H60 water loop, and a rosewill Green for stable power delivery. The case is the InWin 707.
Haaaaang on a mo... Personal preference might come into it, but I´m pretty sure the R9 380 beats the 960. The 390 is definitely a bit faster and cheaper than the 970 in terms of real game performance, so why is NVidia still being treated like it was 2014? Also on a 1k build, wouldn´t it be better to go for a 4690k and save the money by going for a R9 series card?
why does the case on the $1000 build cost less than the case on the $500 case? Sorry if I sound stupid I'm new at learning about computers. Are the cases interchangeable?
in the top teir build did you go with the 1tb drive instead of the 512gb samsung m.2 drive because you just wanted that extra space? does the extra insane speed make a difference in a build liek this?
This is a bit unrelated but I'm going to be building a $2400 PC soon (first build) and was going for a red and black theme. My quest is, how would I go about getting red and black cables for it? On the sites it says that they are 'sleeved cable EXTENSIONS'. Does this mean that if I use these I will have ridiculously long cables in my computer?
Thanks! I was in the mindset that the only wayt o get red and black cables is to do custom modding. I'll be sure to check these ones out. Thanks again!
Hey, Im building a PC on somewhat of a budget ( peripherals included). I plan on getting a 4460 and 960, but im roughly a hundred dollars short. Do you think getting the G3258 now with the 960 and getting a 4460 or 4690k later when I have enough would be wise? Will the G3258 bottleneck it too much? Will it shorten the life span of the 960? I want to get the G3258 instead of the FX . I860K so I can get an Intel motherboard and in the future when I have enough I only need to upgrade the cpu. (not planning on going skylake)
+A Helpful Person im getting the B85M - HDS. can it overclock the G3258? can CPUs like the 4460 and 4690k run on it? with the G3258 i will be playing easy to run games like CSGO, but after i upgrade i want to try more demanding games like Dying Light.
I opted to upgrade my GPU this year and managed to grab an MSi R9 390 for $275 (with an additional $20 MIR) during Black Friday. Between the 970's memory partitioning and the fact that the card itself is over a year old, I couldn't justify going green this time around.
Any tips on my build? CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive GPU: MSI Radeon R9 380 2GB Video Card Case: Xion XON-310_BK MicroATX Mid Tower Case
I building a gaming PC my self and I'm wondering if I can take a wet cloth to touch to get rid of static and electricity build up so I can work on my pc? would that work???
Question: Is the PC of $1,020 better than the one shown in the video from 2014 "Can you Build a 4K Gaming PC for Under $1000?"? Or are they similar? I'm looking for something to run games like Overwatch or Planetside 2 that can run them in full graphics with no problems. Also something that doesn't need to much time to compile things, since i'm a programmer. Ty for the help.
Kind of a stupid question, but could you (theoretically) buy a second hard drive and have (for example) WindowsOS on one and AppleOSX on the other, and switch between them???
My first Build.....RM 650w***GE Force GT 740 4GB***intel core i5-3570k quad core***Gigabyte ATX ddr3 LGA 1150 SATA DIMM 6Gb/s***Vengeance 16gb***2tb 7200 ...with cooling system and ssd and od and case its about 1000....see anything I should change? Want this mainly for gaming...maybe I should beef up the VC?
+Xipo86 OK. thanks Ill do that man...was following an older video as a guide, I still learned a lot just gotta update the hardware. The $1000 build in this vid looks good, I think I'll get these parts...at least def the video card.
+Xipo86 OK. Nice...so I'll do that. I'm going to use the parts in this vid for the 1000 build....but I'll use some 8 GB RAM and I wanted to use a Gigabyte GA Z97-HD3 LGA 1150 Z97 motherboard....I just think it would be better and I just like Gigabyte.... The GPU is much better(EVGA GTX 970) and I can use the extra storage on the HDD and the SSD. What do you think of the CPU though(core i5 4460)? I really appreciate the advise!
+Xipo86 Excellent....this is really helping me Xipo. I have some other questions....Since Im getting a different motherboard should I get a different power supply or can I stick with the 500w? How do you determine the wattage you need to sustain a system? Also...I'm using the corsair 500r case, it comes with 3 extra fan slots....should I buy extra fans for those slots? ... and should I get any extra connectors for anything?
Hey! This is the build I'm looking at, some suggestions of ways of improving it would be much appreciated (my budget is like 1700-1900 aud), I'm playing games on 1080p as well as using other programs and using it as a general use computer every now and then. Case - Fractal Design Define R4 Motherboard - Asus H97-PRO GAMER ATX CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury (2x8gb) DDR3-1866 Storage - Western Digital Caviar 1tb GPU - (This was the part I'm having trouble with) MSI Radeon R9 390/MSI GTX 970 PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold as well as a LG GH24NSC0 DVD/CD Writer and Windows 10. As said, any suggestions would be much appreciated!
I need advice for my PC. I have a H81M-E Mobo (it's tiny), an i3-4160 3.60 GHz CPU, a GeForce GT 730 GPU and 8 GBs of Ram running on Windows 7. The problem I have is that obviously this is a cheap build and while it serves pretty decently for most games it runs games like The Witcher 2 or 3 really badly. I don't have much computer knowledge but I'm assuming I could upgrade my GPU to whatever is available (if anything else will fit on such a small mobo) and my CPU to an i5 or i7 that is compatible with LGA 1150 (although I've been told newer CPUs wont run well on a low end mobo). Would it be wiser to upgrade those components on my current mother board and just build a new PC when the time comes (I'm worried parts won't be compatible if I replace the CPU and GPU but it would be easier for me) or buy a better motherboard and use whatever parts from my current build now and just buy the ones necessary (Will be a pain in the ass but probably better to have a better mobo in the long run)? I'm tight for cash at the moment so I'll have to be patient for either option but option 1 would be cheaper since I won't have to buy a new mobo, case, CPU and GPU all at once.
+Myrell Tuller All you really need to be able to run current gen games on your current rig is a GPU upgrade. Although the i3 does fall behind in some of the newer CPU intensive games it's more than capable maintaining great fps on The Witcher 3 and similar games. It's hard to recommend a specific GPU without knowing your case or PSU. Find out what PSU you have and your case dimensions and look into a new card if your just looking to play current gen games.
+Nathaniel Fancher Thanks, I was told by another fellow the same thing. He recommended a GTX 960 4GB and said I shouldn't need to upgrade to an i7 as it would be overkill. Thanks for the input!
Hi there. Just curious: What kinds of problems have you observed with the Killer NICs? There's one in my Gigabyte Z87 board that seems to work without issue. However, I don't do much online gaming, so I may not be taxing it in the same manner. Thanks!
Hi Linus, do you think an i3 Skylake 6100 coupled with a GTX 960 would work well as a budget machine? I can get some sweet details on such a build atm.
I'm planning to get the following rig can you rate it? i5 6600k ASRock z170 PRO4S 8GB (2x4GB) Kingston HyperX Fury ddr4-2133 Sapphire Radeon r9 390 Nitro Thermaltake Smart se 730w / modular NZXT Source 340 Thermaltake contact 16 1tb WD Blue sata. I have a laptop atm thats why i thogh to go for the 1551 board and also skylake cpu since im building it from a scratch. This way i should better upgrade capabilities compared to 1550 boards, right?
***** but isnt it only to speed up the launch/loading of programs/os? I dont really mind spending like 2 seconds more for launching stuff (espetially when it can cost me 100+€).
since I'm on a super budget build would it be fine if I don't buy the GPU on the first build? Im really only playing light game CS GO,Garrys mod,Arma 2,Running with rifles(I know arma 2 is demanding).
I wrote this on another video... I want to crossifer R9 280x with HD 7950 3GB its a bit cheaper from another R9. What im asking is should i spend a little more on another 280x or buy 7950 ??
Are we filming above 4k now? Those pop-in shots looked WAY better than normal.
+EposVox New camera.
LinusTechTips Without knowing the price, I can confirm it's well worth the investment, haha.
+EposVox they use gopro hero 4
+Niko Blyat no they don't -_-
No, they definitely don't. A7sii and GH4
God, I didn't realize how old this is until he started listing the parts.
dude this is hilarious 💀💀
4 cores for 190$ is rough
+ScrattleGG 32gb 2666 2x16 ddr4 is 289$, that is cheap
+ScrattleGG Pascal won't be releasing until most likely Q2/3 next year. As far as GPUs are concerned, I think it's fine purchasing a high end card such as the 390/970/980. Maybe even the 980Ti as resale will still probably be fairly high even at Pascal release.
pcpartpicker.com/p/tmnFVn I think my $1000 build is better but you decide
+Prasannakalyan Kumar I think that if I am going to spend 1000 dollars on a rig, I am going to want a better cpu, so I can keep it
Cannot wait for 2016 buyer's guide XD
Tomas Sviridovas Nov 20, Linus always uploads video around this time every year
ya me to i have been working on this build but idk if i should wait for holidays when it goes down or just get it i dont know how much pc parts drop over big holidays pcpartpicker.com/list/q6Nhjc this is my build
@Alex Gerlach yes
At around the 9:00 mark, Linus sounded A LOT like Austin, it was almost frightening
Lol
+Aaron Dickson Holy shit what have you done
+Aaron Dickson I had to listen to that like 10 times just to make out Austin's voice. But, I finally heard it.
+Aaron Dickson he's successfully planted his eggs inside everyone
*cringe*
Why a 960 and not a 380? the 380 performs a bit better and has 2g extra vram. and they are pretty much the same price in the UK with the 380 sometimes being cheaper. So seriously why not a 380?
+Double bow Were you temporarily deaf when he said it was $270. How about when he said those were guidelines based on the deals he saw?
+Infinite Zero I don't see where he mentions the 380 being $270, and yes he says they are the deals he saw, but in general the 380 is the same price or cheaper than the 960 in the UK and the UK's prices are not too different from the US's (without taking into account exchange rate) so atm the 960 is $170 but its £160 without much change, but the 380 is £155 so im gonna guess roughly 160-170 in the US. But that is me going off UK prices and guestimating for the US.
+Double bow 960 has more software features that have better GUI.
***** the FPS isnt that much different that you will notice a big difference with 2015 AAA games
***** yea i have a STRIX 960 its great
Some issues:
R9 380 > GTX 960 2GB
R9 390 - best performance/price ratio and cheaper > GTX 970
Come on, the NVIDIA bias is getting out of hand. Where are all the AMD cards?
+Humble Watermelon it's been like that for the last year or 2
My first thought as soon as I saw the GPU choices, the 390 is trading blows with the 970 in most games, and pulls ahead at higher res, and is cheaper in some cases, but they still chose the 970?
Even if none of those reasons matter, Nvidia treated their customers like idiots when the 3.5Gb thing came out, plus they lied about specs before it came out, and they're getting away with that every time someone chooses their card over an equally if not more capable AMD.
Linus y u do dis ;_;
+Humble Watermelon the R9 390 is more expensive than the GTX970 in new zealand :(
Because Shadowplay, and dont being up Raptr because i use it, and its fucking SHIT.
Also he did say that the 390 is slightly faste4 if you bat fpr the red team. Chill.
$250 motherboard?!? Why not spend that money one a better cpu
GPU*
theres really no other component that was better than both those parts at the time, the 980 ti wasn't the flagship because of the titan x but the titan x was also $300 to $400 more than the 980 ti
I get that a lot of your audience is US based, but we're both Canadian, and you're based in Canada, don't leave us out in the cold.
Personally I also put a SSD into every build, even the $500 builds.
I do it because Canadians are already used to just adding exchange to whatever the price is in the states + a small tax just for being Canadian.
+LinusTechTips It does suck though :(
+LinusTechTips What about us Swedes, we are freezing aswell QQ
LinusTechTips I don't know if it's more sad that you're right, or that we as Canadians accept it without much of a fuss.
Benjamin Franklin Good point. Many Canadians take free healthcare for granted.
Umm... R9380, which is much better than a 960 is only 170USD. I understand that NVidia sponsors you, but please don't mislead people.
+MarioDragon The 960 isnt faster than a 380.. don't know where you got that idea!
+MarioDragon What are you talking about? 960 trades blows with 270x. 380 is about 30-35% percent faster than 960 for the same price. Linus is a sellout, so I don't listen to his preferences anymore.
Are you serious? Go look at benchmarks. The 380 beats the 960 in almost all scenarios.
+AlmightyGTR true very true. This is somewhat like gamer gate. The reviewers are biased
Good guide for those who will buy a new PC this holiday.
My PC buying guide this year is definitely the 'Scrapyard Wars'...
What do you guys think of my build?

recommance get a i5
+Harry Tung He's trying to save money, not spend it all.
+Lizrad Sceptile Man, Shut up with i5 processor there's no difference I'm running sli 980 ti with 8350 overclocked to 5.4 ghz and I have no bottleneck. So stop! Saying i5.
try to throw in a gtx 970 instead if you can
+Brenster2223 too expensive sides an old 290 would be cheaper and a 390 has a couple percent lead in most games.
Trololol
+Jill Valentine
Going Haswell Pentium would be stupider there are Skylake Pentiums and the upgrade path is irrelevent you won't be upgrading until next gen cpu's come out anyways.
***** Sup IT
+Jill Valentine most games nowadays won't run on dual core anyway.
+Gray Fox im on lsd, and i approve of this conversation :)
Hey Linus, in the last built you opt for the OCZ 180 as SSD.
Why the sudden change to that brand? I mean usually you advice Samsung for SSD and a long time ago Intel. Anything special about that brand? Or just similar to Samsung but cheaper?
+DiZh0 Cheap. I'd say Sandisk Ultra II but whatever. I really couldn't care less.
+DiZh0 OCZ is now owned and designed by Micron (iirc). So, much less chance of it dying for no reason ;) And it's cheap.
+DiZh0 OCZ is owned by Toshiba (good flash, and decent controller technology) and that particular SKU is a good value for the money.
Specialy since its for christmas for most people
And NO im not an amd fanbo, i just say that we are talking about budget here so Linus shouldn't put ANY personnal/overall preferences in the video, just the best price-performance choices and im saying that i'm not an amd fanboy because as soon as someone defends amd, a lot of people rush to say "amd fanboy" and i know for sure that some are gonna say that
It doesnt bother me personnally since i'm not buying a computer and i really like Linus but this is just.. No
+Dry Cereal Master Race If he was sponsored by Nvidia he wouldn't have even mentioned the 390.
+Dry Cereal Master Race Whats your comment even mean then?
Keen W That linus should have said the 390 instaed of the 970 since it's cheaper and better in factory settings (then for most people because not everybody is an overclocker) but forget about it, as soon as someone defends amd everybody hates them already
So ?
I've been watching this channel for more than 7 years now...
didn't realize Linus looked and talked like this in 2015???
Thank you age 🙏
Linus Nvidia fanboy confirmed. Oh wait we already know that...
There are a few good AMD cards on the market at the moment including the R9 390 that performs about the same as the 970 but has 8GB of VRAM.
+Joe Dirt hes not,he had to do this because he is sponsored by Nvida...
+R7 260X Gaming
ohh, than is everything fine and i can trust him for getting the best price per performance
no im not
The 390/380 are a bad choice imo.
+P@r@m3d!©
Idk why i'm taking time to reply to your uneducated ignorant comment but i suppose i can take a couple minutes.
1. They can't make use of the extra VRAM because they are last gen "chipset"... Holy shit the ignorance is real. That comment literally makes no sense. I have a R9 280X on my second comp at 1080p maxing out the 3GB VRAM not even due to high res and that card is a tahiti GPU which is a rebadged 7970 from 2012.
2. AMD drivers are fine, That's a sad excuse ignorant Nvidia fanboys have been regurgitating for a few years now.
3.. TDP is not power consumption, The actual power draw difference between a 960 and 280 is like 40 watts which is a matter of pennies difference on your power bill each month.
4. AMD cards can't run certain programs? What the fuck are you even saying at this point? I understand that you bought an Nvidia card and are looking at every excuse you can find to justify your purchase but this is getting pretty sad. Be happy with your purchase and go play some games, Stop making yourself look like a fool.
Linus........your right earring, man.......please get a new one...........
+Tristan Berke Haters.
+Casey Stellar I hate this fucking shit. **someone gives advice** Fuk u hater! U just jealous as fk! Ha! Hu's laffin' nau!
Justin Fung thank you, sir.
Justin Fung Okay, what's wrong with his earrings? You don't like them?
Tristan Berke No, thank you for commenting that and making this guy comment. He's just making himself look like those people with ego issues. Anyone just gives advice and he automatically thinks it's and insult and become butthurt. Yes, butthurt.
Have you ever done a budget setup for content creation? I would be interested to see a machine optimized for video editing/production. Sorry if you have already done this and I just can't find it. Great video!
(Watching this in 2023, reminiscing on the 4790k build I did months before this came out)
"Avoid the killer network card"
THANKS LINUS, THAT'S GREAT ADVICE! AND RIGHT ON TIME TOO!
Seriously, he was so right and I wish I knew that before I built mine. Memory leak issues and shoddy.
linus what about an R9 380 4gb instead of the gtx 960? its a little price gap, and some better preformance
+Anthony Mejias That is an options, although as Linus said, you could tweak the PC however you want.
+Infinite Zero i know, i just want to know if it is a good choice, i want advice
+Anthony Mejias If you can get the 380, it would give you better performance in most situations.
When mom says "no u can't build a new fax machine"
>watches linus tech tips
>he picks all nvidia cards
not sure why i ever expected anything else.
+AllYourBase So what? Because it's not effective we won't give him effort points? Nothing for every time he's reccomended and AMD card? Nothing?
+Infinite Zero nope. he chose nvidia cards when amd cards were the clear pick.
From the first 23 seconds of this video i just want to say the video image quality is FANTASTIC massive thumbs up!
Linus PC Buyer's guide for 2016. I'm trying to save up for making a pc in mind january so can you make a new video?
I'm building a PC very soon but I need to find a case. Does anyone know some good cases that come with fans built in?
Fractal define design r5
Tesseract
All cases come with at least one fan.
Just use a plastic milk crate and a desk fan. That's the ghetto way.
+veroxic zalman z11 plus
Will you be making another list like this for this year? :3 plz
FYI the EVGA GeForce GTX 960 is an 8 pin graphics card and an 8 pin connector is not included with the CoolerMaster Elite 350 bundle listed. @2:28
which one of these systems will destroy ISIS? (^__^)
+Ashish Patel all of them duh
+SS42R lol
AMD
+Ashish Patel LOL
+Ashish Patel only linda will destroy ISIS
Nobody tells about the middle option of FX6300 ($90) or the cheap option of Pentium G4400 ($50).
Thats because they sucked

Looks at his watch
the 390 IS CHEAPER WTF LINUS
+cocacoladog10 No it's not did you even look at the prices no because you CONVENIENTLY ignored the numbers on screen to hate. You also CONVENIENTLY did not here him say that you could use a 390 if you wanted?
Infinite Zero where i order from a msi 390 is cheaper than a msi gtx 970
Infinite Zero a gtx 970 is 357 usd and a msi 390 is 314
Yeah a 2gb 390 cost the same as a 2gb 780ti lol.
Daniel Ward what do you mean 2 gb 390 has 8 gb while 780ti has 3
*NOTE*
Linus chose the weaker 970 than the stronger 390 cuz he is paid to do it, dont blame Linus for being biased (maybe a little)
+Xavier Lim Did you hack into the bank and look at the transaction records or spy on LMG? Honestly if he was paid he would not have said anything about the 390.
Infinite Zero He said it in the video -_-
Yes, because how dare he have a preference of Nvidia over AMD
its nice to see the last build use the corsair air 540 as the case, I absolutely love it
I'm just gonna stick with buying a pre-built PC... I feel really anxious building a computer.
don't! its super easy and safe there are many great tutorials out there! JUST DO IT!
+Amusix reddit.com/r/buildapc
+Amusix Building a pc is so easy I can do it with my eyes closed.... Water cooling is also pretty easy.
+Amusix why would you?
The PC i'm thinking about getting is $650USD.

Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3 FM2+ AMD mATX Motherboard
LG DVD Combo Drive
500W Antec VP500P Power Supply
Zalman R1 ATX Mid Tower Chassis
Microsoft Windows 10 64bit
+ It comes with Fallout 4 and a Roccat Ravio Mousepad.
can I play overwatch in this? and also Linus can you make a gaming PC for 600sgd
Overwatch will run on the 500$ easily, i have the same GPU and it has no problem with it
+TheDeimos97 how many fps could you get on fallout 4 high settings
You could probably play Overwatch with a 5 year old GPU or even older, it's not a really demanding game. Not especially great graphics (not that it's ugly!), maps are kinda small and not super-detailed, no environmental destruction etc.
He does not use SGD as currency. Sorry. Even in my country I use IDR but if I make videos, the currency is still USD.
Go walk around in simlim level 4. A bunch of vendors sell entry-level gaming rigs for 700-800 sgd. ask for just the parts without construction, and no windows, and you should be good. go home, build it yourself, and install windows yourself.
Hello, other Linus.
I don't have a child, brother OR a sister. Lucky me - looks like im getting a new PC for xmas!
Child?
Dannyx51 did you watch the video?
yes
Fuzz FM You miss out on a lot tho :P
Dear Linus, could I have a small loan of a million dollars for my new computer build?
Yes, me too linus please?
I'm not even greedy, Can i just have $15k?
DAMMIT LINUS
You and I are both Canadian but why can't you do a build in the price for someone like you and I T___T
because 500$ build would be a used pentium III with a nvidia fx 5300 and punching your neighbor in the crouch to steal his monitor and run...
***** LOL here it's like 600$
I have to agree with Linus on the "Just Game" build.
Though I switched out the 960 for a 950... but I did get the 860K.
People building this computer aren't exactly looking at upgradeability and futureproofness. They want to be able to play all the games at at least medium settings. Certain games (like Far Cry 4) will only play on quad cores. This is a great first build for many people.
even jaytwocents choosed r9 390 over an 970
+Daniel F It's a guidelines, he just chose the cheaper one.
+Infinite Zero
390 stock vs 970 stock the 390 is faster
390 oc vs 970 oc also the 390 is faster
and he choosed the 390 also because of the v-ram
+Infinite Zero
"honestly, this is the way you need to go (pointing at the 390) if thats your price point" JayzTwoCents
+Daniel F just goes to show you everyone has their own preferences. if you don't like them then don't buy it. simple as that. this is a guideline
+Keen W
sry about forgetting, that the guideline is an gpu with the name nvidia on it
I'd take the r9 280x / r9 285 (380) over the 960.
Everyone with any sense would lol, and 390 over 970 too, AMD are finally being competitive and Linus shuts them out... This is the reason AMD are struggling, people with sway are ignoring their great offerings.
I'm early better make a joke
Intel Core 2 Duo
Dont u dare joke about the processor that is used in NASA computers!!!1!1!1!1!!
+Josh Gavilaga better joke Pentium D
+Josh Gavilaga Could have gone with the classic of "P4 Netburst"
+descendency I got here first.
+Josh Gavilaga wait are you the joke?
Mac's are only good for editing programs and music composition, in my opinion. On the subject of gaming, however, you should stick to Windows.
Ok grandpa.
?. Not sure, are you my Grandson? Oh my god, I've been looking for you my entire childhood. Where did you go?
um, you just don't know what you were looking for, that is all.
so jealous of those prices .. here it's at around a 30-40% price increase compared to the US .... on almost anything.. altough AMD GPU's are cheaper then the equivalent nvidia cards, with a 75$ price difference
+Xipo86 maybe France? Or probably Australia lol
Snipezz lmao whoops didnt see that
Seeing as this was last year all of this is now cheaper.
SmallieBigs Hell yea am I right
Nick's Action Videos yep, I bought my GTX 960 SC ACX 2.0 4gb for just under $220 like a year ago
Crippling Depression Eh nope
Some say that whenever the Linus' intro is played, Laszlo magically gains one piece of knowledge regarding computers.
NVIDIA PAID HIM
+Chunjur Rinchhen They did not, they only get paid by the retailers here.
+Infinite Zero they didn't paid linus,they sponsored....
960 xD Funny...
970... again xD...
*****
I have a gtx 970 too, but it has the worst prcie to performance ratio...
*****
In Germany the r9 390 and the gtx 970 cost the same (330 Euros).
Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for pain.
You aint nothing but pain
yeah and ur the sucker
haha Love how Linus goes "A combo PSU and Case aren't worth the metal there in" although i've had my thermaltake for over 3 years. But i am gonna get a new one soon!
So now 2 GTX 1080s is equivalent to 4 Titan X' right?
idk can u sli the I forgot
You dumb af
Just got my corsair carbide 540 case not to long ago and love it, was a huge upgrade from my cheapo $35 case i used to stay in my budget when building my current set up. So much more room in general and awesome cooling for not to bad of a price.
Source 210 user here! It really is a very good case. Will have had it for a year now and other than lacking SSD mounting on the back, it has had every feature I have needed. Although USB 3 would have been nice. But the 210 Elite has that.
Good stuff Linus. I have been watching your vids for a while....definitely the most helpful bloke when it comes to pc building.
Is this a good build for a beginner PC gamer?

I built my brother and me AMD rigs this past holiday.
For his, I went with a an AMD Athlon X4 860K,
an Asrock Extreme4+,
8GB Team Vulcan ram,
an R7 370,
a WD Blue tb,
and a rosewill semimodular power supply for that minimalistic design to make it all fit into a MicroATX case nicely.
For Mine, I went with an FX 8320,
an Asrock Fatal1ty Killer,
16GB Team Dark ram,
an R9 380X,
an OCZ Arc 120gb ssd,
a Hitachi deskstar 2tb,
a Corsair Hydro H60 water loop,
and a rosewill Green for stable power delivery. The case is the InWin 707.
good for you for going for a 380x vs a gtx 960, the 960 if actually slower than the 380 at the same price.
5:08 that pic of the power supply is actually of the 100-W1-0500-KR, a 80+ unit.
why does the case on the $1000 build cost less than the case on the $500 case? Sorry if I sound stupid I'm new at learning about computers. Are the cases interchangeable?
Seagates this year. That's interesting. Why the switch from WD? I get the SSHD for the budget PC, but were the 4TB drives a better value?
in the top teir build did you go with the 1tb drive instead of the 512gb samsung m.2 drive because you just wanted that extra space? does the extra insane speed make a difference in a build liek this?
on the $2000 build i'm confused on what u mean when you say that its degrading when it comes to gaming. could you clarify?
This is a bit unrelated but I'm going to be building a $2400 PC soon (first build) and was going for a red and black theme. My quest is, how would I go about getting red and black cables for it? On the sites it says that they are 'sleeved cable EXTENSIONS'. Does this mean that if I use these I will have ridiculously long cables in my computer?
+Doctorpen Check out the EVGA PSU's G2 series and P2 series, they come with nice red braided cables !
Thanks! I was in the mindset that the only wayt o get red and black cables is to do custom modding. I'll be sure to check these ones out. Thanks again!
why did you use an fm2+ socket on a computer for upgrade ability? aren't all fx processors am3+?
CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
GPU: MSI Radeon R9 380 2GB Video Card
Case: Xion XON-310_BK MicroATX Mid Tower Case
I building a gaming PC my self and I'm wondering if I can take a wet cloth to touch to get rid of static and electricity build up so I can work on my pc? would that work???
does it matter when i live in EU and i get 230v from my outlet instead off 120v that comes out from the US outlet, with a PC build?
Im looking to build a computer and you don't include a cpu cooler, so I was wondering what I use instead?
+Xipo86 Why is 16GB RAM too much? Isnt it better?
***** My components are on their way....Thanks again Xipo!
will the power supply in the coler master case be enough to power an intel q6600 and hd 7950 or an r9 280?...
+Xipo86 ok thanks...puff

What SSD/HDD setup should I buy/use for a mid-range PC build if I only want to use the PC for gaming?
Hey!
This is the build I'm looking at, some suggestions of ways of improving it would be much appreciated (my budget is like 1700-1900 aud), I'm playing games on 1080p as well as using other programs and using it as a general use computer every now and then.
Case - Fractal Design Define R4
Motherboard - Asus H97-PRO GAMER ATX
CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz
RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury (2x8gb) DDR3-1866
Storage - Western Digital Caviar 1tb
GPU - (This was the part I'm having trouble with) MSI Radeon R9 390/MSI GTX 970
PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold
as well as a LG GH24NSC0 DVD/CD Writer and Windows 10.
As said, any suggestions would be much appreciated!
You're not alone Linus, I also put a hybrid drive in my entry level a year and a half ago
Awesome video. Really helpful. Wish there were more like this one without all the fluff and bias sprinkled on top.
Hi there. Just curious: What kinds of problems have you observed with the Killer NICs? There's one in my Gigabyte Z87 board that seems to work without issue. However, I don't do much online gaming, so I may not be taxing it in the same manner. Thanks!
Just curious, but the "Just Game" computer can have windows 10 installed on it, correct?
Hi Linus, do you think an i3 Skylake 6100 coupled with a GTX 960 would work well as a budget machine?
I can get some sweet details on such a build atm.
I'm planning to get the following rig can you rate it?
i5 6600k
ASRock z170 PRO4S
8GB (2x4GB) Kingston HyperX Fury ddr4-2133
Sapphire Radeon r9 390 Nitro
Thermaltake Smart se 730w / modular
NZXT Source 340
Thermaltake contact 16
1tb WD Blue sata.
I have a laptop atm thats why i thogh to go for the 1551 board and also skylake cpu since im building it from a scratch. This way i should better upgrade capabilities compared to 1550 boards, right?
*****
but isnt it only to speed up the launch/loading of programs/os? I dont really mind spending like 2 seconds more for launching stuff (espetially when it can cost me 100+€).
since I'm on a super budget build would it be fine if I don't buy the GPU on the first build? Im really only playing light game CS GO,Garrys mod,Arma 2,Running with rifles(I know arma 2 is demanding).
Hey would the first setup (500$-600$) work with 2 Monitors? (one for gaming, the other for things i might need while doing so)
I have a question, why does he include the "With WIndows" portion? Everyone knows you can get windows for free practically anywhere now.
I wrote this on another video... I want to crossifer R9 280x with HD 7950 3GB its a bit cheaper from another R9.
What im asking is should i spend a little more on another 280x or buy 7950 ??
where in the world do you find a 980ti for only $600, I see it priced at $780-900 everywhere.
Is the 'Seagate 1TB Desktop SSHD SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive (ST1000DX001)' same as the product mentioned in the video?
I'm not seeing cooling systems for these builds....how important are they?
