I got my first baitcaster a few weeks ago and took it out for the first time yesterday. Thanks to this video, I had minimal issues. A few backlashes here and there but overall I felt pretty confident after a few casts. I definitely need to practice accuracy and control, but that will come I’m sure. Thanks for all of your videos dude
I've been working on just making straight cast😮😮😮😮😮. I was able to ease off the brakes, but I sometimes forget testing my lure, if I change up. I saw on one channel where a guy put tape over the reel to keep his nephew from getting a backlash. As the boy got better, he would remove the tape to get more length. I never thought of that idea😊
Tyler , once again, thank you so much for an amazing video. This is the second time I’ve watched it. I picked up a bait caster from a friend who gave up, and I think the reason he gave up is because he didn’t watch your video and understand all the important, basic steps of setting up the rod and reel. I look forward to moving behind the spinning rod and seeing how this works. Thanks so much. I’m actually at a little local pond, practicing at the moment, watching the video at the same time.
I like how Daiwa has their spool tension to where it has just a little side to side play. That’s how I setup all my reels whatever the brand. I think it’s better to use the magnetic brake rather than tension, because that puts more resistance on the line and your lure won’t go where your rod tip is pointed.
What I do sometimes when I get a backlash, instead of pulling out more line, I walk backwards until the backlash is gone then I reel in my line tight, LOL Sometimes I have to walk backwards for alot of footage. Probably looks silly but hey , it gets my line back in the reel where it should be. Thanks for this excellent video Tyler!! Happy fishing Y'all!! Update: Thankfully I don't get that many backlashes anymore. Practice does help and I have tossed out my line alot over the months! LOL
Don't know if you will see this but your tips actually helped me to be able to set my bait caster without the backlash and enjoy the new set up Cheers from Australia..
Thanks for the tips bro. I have encountered a lot of backlashes since I’ve used baitcastors but I watch YT vids like yours and it helps me improve how to use my bait castors.
i bought my first baitcaster yeasterday, trying to adjust things, few bad cast and than i got the thumb trick, no matter what lure i put on, i casted them far and quik. many small quick cast. this thing is awsome, so fun and i feel more connected with my rod. more control. i thought it will be more trouble to use this but it was less trouble 😂 i should have done this before
Got my first bait caster 3 days ago OF CORSE IT WAS A LEWS!!!! And I’m absolutely in freaking love with it. Defiantly a huge difference from hearing that reel pealing line but thanks to your videos I only had 1 BAD backlash. After that it was smooth sailing caught my PB on my new baby today. Absolutely love it but I will say I can’t overhand cast only side cast, I’d love a video on how to flip cover/ skip docks
I got mine 2 days ago, a lews mach smash..glad you like yours I absolutely hate mine. Flurocarbon wouldn't cast more then 20 feet, changed to mono and it backlashed every cast no matter how I set it. It ruined baitcasters for me I'm taking it back and getting another spinning reel
I really appreciate this video. I recently bought my first baitcaster, and I've been practicing short casts in my backyard and got a few small backlashes and 1 birds nest so I'm going to try everything you mentioned in this video
Great tips Tyler. Never thought to use the index finger while reeling in loose line. I would always try to find a way to eliminate the loose line by turning my body or walking it out.
Hey man, I appreciate this video, Im fairly new to bait casters, and I did some research before hand, and I was doing everything properly, except using my finger to add tension to the line as I’m working my jig. I was getting really frustrated by getting frustrated by the consistent birdsnested but now I actually understand why that is and i can fix my technique. Good shit man.
I know its an old video. Tip 3 is the best. Was having that exact issue of having slack line on reel in and would cause me lots of issues. Thanks for the tips
Best tip for beginners is putting braid with a leader , makes taking out backlashes 100 percent easier. Plus braid doesn't degrade with each backlash as with mono or fluoro that'll damage after bad backlashes
If you need to learn how to spool a baitcaster or spinning reel please don't hesitate to go into your local BCF or bass pro and they will actully show you how to do it by hand.
Thanks man, this video was very very helpful, and I got my first Lews baitcaster on my birthday. Can't wait to get better as time goes by and catch my PB on it.
@@TylersReelFishing I'm going to buy it throu your link but starting with a cheap Lew's. What did you say 7'6" rod with what reel? I'd have to watch the video again.
Thank you so much for teaching me how to keep a tight line when reeling slack in on your reel. I never thought of placing my trigger finger on the real guide to control the tension. I do have a question, when do I set the break with the dial and when do I set the tension when setting up my reel in other words do I have the dial set on the highest number and then press the release to drop the bait and adjust the tension or do I have the dial set on zero then press the release to drop the bait and adjust the tension then adjust the dial I am so confused as to when I adjust each one could you please answer this question in a video or a personal message thank you so much for your tips excellent video I like your videos you don't waste any time getting to the point
Do your spool tension first for a controlled drop, if you're new to baitcasting reels start with your brakes on the higher side, with practice you'll be able to loosen them both a bit. If you're a spin fisherman forget about the flick cast and keep your thumb lightly on the spool adding pressure to slow down and stop the lure, it helps to slightly load the rod on the backcast
This is a great video my friend thank you and you are the only other person other than myself I’ve ever seen use a Slug-go lol I love those things. Stay safe my Friend Semper Fidelis
Great info! If I get a backlash I always put tension on the line holding it taught to my rod when reeling it back up kinda like when I'm spooling the reel. What about line conditioner? I used the lews on some fluro and that stuff is freaking awesome!!!!! Wanting badly to try it on some suffix braid I got and am having some backlash I wasn't with Berkley x5 and x9..
Another big tip for after you backlash. After you pull out all the line to get it out, try to get the line spread out along your rod. I know I’m not the only one who has started reeling in all that line and it knotted up and I had to cut the line to get it out
I have a question today i went fishing with baitcaster and i needed longer cast and i coudnt cast it more than 20m i have 10-40g fast action 7ft and was using 10g lure is it logest cast or my magnetic brakes are on 5 and my knob tension knot is set like u explained so is it good cast or ?

Awesome bro! Tnx for that. Just started my bass fishing journey. Went out for the 2nd time ever on Saturday n it was a bit frustrating but i know these tips will help.
Tyler, quick question. On a spinning rod, most people cast right-handed and reel the line in with their left, so the rod never changes hands. On a baitcaster, it seems that you have to transfer from your right to left hand after each cast. Is that proper technique?
Tyler, I understand you are trying to train tournament style bass fishermen. That's great. Not being a tourney enthusiast or being numbers oriented, I prefer to enjoy the fight more than you do. Water skiing a fish across the surface, then resuming casting in the same breath, well,,,,, seems like more of a job than fishing. Loved your marabou jig video with smallmouth. Now, that's more my style.
Would you be able to cover how to actually cast the bait caster? When I try sidearm it goes 90 degrees to me in whatever direction the rod was moving but no backlashes. When I try over hand casting I almost always get a backlash. I have set up the reel how you showed and even have the magnetic brake cranked up to 9 or 10. Thanks for all the great videos.
Okay, I’ve lost 2 spool tension knobs in as few fishing outings. How can I keep from dropping the knob where it can not be found? Walking to or from the truck to find my hole.
If your tension knobs are coming off you may be fishing too light of a lure/rig. These types of issues are why people will fish weightless finesse rigs with spinning reels, because it's where the baitcaster really falls apart. It's doable for sure but if you're having to have a completely loose spool tension, it's time to pull out a spinner

Newbie here...what advantages does a baitcaster have over a spinning reel? Is this a reel for a true beginner?
Lots of them, and anybody can learn, but usually a spinning reel is a “beginner” reel. Search “TylersReelFishing baitcaster” for more videos explaining how to properly use this thing
What’s up brother!!!
Not much man.. just got my first whopper plopper so im exited to see how it works.. tight lines man!!
“that was like a 4lb” bro that fish was not over 2 pounds
Are you using the custom pro gen 3 reel?
