Never fished a baitcaster before. Just purchased my first and practicing in the backyard this morning. First cast: backlash 😂. After watching this it was relatively easy to remove. Thanks bro for your great content. You’ve taught this noob more than I could ever imagine in the past year. Tight lines! 🎣
You saved my 300 yards braid line, big thank you! There's lots of videos that explain how to do it, but most of them say same thing about putting pressure and reeling, which did not worked for me, but your method saved my line, big thank you!
If it's kind of bad, I tighten up the drag and reel a few times with my thumbs over the spool as tight as I can. I then pull. This usually undo the backlash by itself so I dont have to pick the lines. Works 80% of the time.
Tyler, I am on the lake right now and just got my first major bird nest. Watched this video, took a deep breath and 5 minutes later I got it all out. Thank you!
Just came from your “No More Backlashes” video and let me say….your videos are the easiest to follow. You explain everything perfectly. I feel a lot more comfortable with my baitcaster now after watching just these two videos
@@TylersReelFishing ever since I watched your videos I’ve had no issues with my baitcaster, no matter what I throw on there. Huge fan now and I’ll be watching all of your videos from here on out!
Spin caster all my life, just recently bought my first baitcaster and the way you explained how to finesse the line, and not be rough with it, helped me with backlashes so much, thanks!
Having only spin casted and fly fished most of my life, I sometimes struggle with bait casting. Now, I prefer bait casting because of its versatility, often in spite of my lack of proficiency ! Videos like yours along with viewer comments are very helpful.
I am mostly a fly fisherman but I have used (inexpertly) a baitcasting reel a few times. What I really like about them is that it takes skill to use. More interesting than a spinning outfit. My perception is that a person can be really accurate with them.
Such a great video, haven't got to properly use my new baitcaster yet as i'm still getting used to it by casting in my backyard. Really love the content, you diserve my sub and ill definitely be watching more of your content.
Very helpful video for all fisherman/women. I find this video great for beginners to help them with their mistakes they don't understand how to fix. Thank you for the vid.
I just retired and bought my first baitcaster ever (a Kistler) and went with quality because I was expecting a learning curve and didn't want to wonder whether it was equipment. I did get some backlashes my first time out and couldn't figure out why because I had gone through the whole tuning procedure and was careful practicing feathering with my thumb on a calm day. I finally figured out that it was my release timing. I was releasing too early (it's a bit different than spinning and I was trying both side casting and overhead). I finally figured out that I was releasing just a bit too early, had too high of an arc and the lure was slowing at the top at the top of the arc for a fraction of a second while the reel continued wanting to spin out at the same speed. Lots to learn but man, can you get distance with a baitcaster when you do it right.
It's my second day of using a bait caster and I just got a gnarly birdnest. Thanks for your help, I managed to get rid of it even with 5 "roadblocks" as you say. THANK YOU once again! ! !
One of the BEST videos I seen so far cause OMG MY REEL LOOKS JUST LIKE THAT 😢😢😢😢😢😢 I JUST BOUGHT TWO RODS, REELS AND FISHING LINE 😫😫😫😫😫 THANK YOU SO MUCH 🐟 💞🤩😇
Really great tip in here that a lot of people fail to mention - when you finally go to reel back in, hold the line TIGHT are you are reeling it back and slowly. Without that tension you are just going to be screwed all over again on your next cast. TIGHT LINES YALL.
They work, thanks! Well the last one did cause mine was serious. I kinked and will have to cut off about 20yds but at least I got it. Now to try second-ever cast, wish me luck!
Great content. I am the King at getting backlashes. Its just part of fishing for me. I usually can get them cleaned up but also always carry a spare reel for the times i just cant clear the reel or when im on the fish.
great vids for a newbie. Just got my first baitcaster and man did these vids help. Only thing is should i have that gear shaped knob closest to the reel all the way twisted towards or away from me? is this just an extension of the small break knob? If anyone sees this i would love to know. Thanks!
at the end a good piece of info, check the line on the line for abnormalities, kinks bends or looseness after a long cast.. Good vid all around ! Thank You
I carry a darning needlle ,awl ,or something similar ,sometimes it helps to unpick where the line knots over itself.Spots where my fingers can’t get in .Thank you for your videos….Cheers from Australia.
TylersReelFishing i can not believe how much it has changed and grown in 40 years. I found and old Garcia reel, yes no Abu Just Garcia spin casting reel. Just going to mount it on the wall. Fish on and have fun.

I'm glad for this video. I used my first baitcaster, last weekend, and it wouldn't cast more than a few yards. The lure hit the water like a rocket. I thought I'd followed one of your previous videos about setting the brakes and tension up correctly, I guyess I'll try again. I had a spinning reel setup with me, with which I caught my FIRST fish in 15 years (I don't get out much) and my largest fish ever, a 19 inch rainbow trout. It was glorious, definitely got the joy back in fishing for me. This baitcaster, I picked it up for a steal at a local walmart. Thanks for the cool video

I have fished spinning reels for 50 years, just purchased my first baitcaster. Thank you for very informative videos. I am not looking forward to the backlashes, but somehow now I kind of am ... just a little.
I've had lots of practice with backlashes, and your right about taking it slow to get it out. Sometimes when the fish are biting it's hard to go slow 🤣
Great video man very intuitive an educational! I've been a fineness angler sense I could start fishing. But here recently I've got my feet wet so to speak with bass fishing. I've caught plenty of decent bass on my spin cast rod. But I find myself very interested in the hot an heavy action that goes down when a bass thumps a bass jig or Texas rig on a bait caster! Needless to say I'm a beginner bass Angler. An the reel is beyond my compression it seems like or nobody i talk to about them is truly educated on a bait caster or how they work?? Would you do a review an explanation of a good budget bait caster so I can finally catch bass on a regular
Great video tutorial for fixing backlashes. Not sure if it’s just me, but backlashes with braid are somewhat harder to fix. I had one so bad before with braid that I grabbed a pair of scissors and went to cutting. LOL!!!😎👍
I can remove backlashes with more skill than the skill it takes to cast. I use a crochet hook when it gets bad. But here's a tricky tip; First, loosen your drag almost entirely; find where the line jams (usually it's a loop that wants to kink a loop around the standing line) and you pull that loop forward (not the main line) as you roll the spool backward (direction of normal reeling) about 1 to 3 full rotations, then pull the main line toward the guides. It will free it up until the next kinked loop. Repeat the process. Don't pull tight! It kinks and tightens the nest. Key is, get the loop pulled from forward/under the spool, then pull by the main line. If you are using 10 lb braid, get out a crochet hook and pray to the knot angels for help.
Making this video had to be annoying but it's super helpful. How else are you to show how to get out of a backlash without getting a backlash. Thank you!!
Funny, I taught myself all of this. Great video though. Have you tried KVD line conditioner? I thought it was gimicky, but it actually works well. I always use a braid backer to a fluoro leader (fg knot), and I find that picking out those knot stoppers is easier with braid. Again, great video. Thanks. Also, just wanted to add that your intro is one of the best on TH-cam. So many are just cheesy and too long!
Is it better to hit the spool release button and pull out the line with thumb pressure on the spool or turn the drag down and just pull it out the front without needing thumb pressure?
We'd have the Ned Sled; Frosty The Snowman as a floating top-water bait; The Santa Frog; The Elf Jerk baits in pine green/peppermint blush; the Antler rig to replace the A-rig; and finally, the Rudolph the Red Nosed Shad.
What fluorocarbon line do you prefer to use? The few that I’ve tried have a lot of memory it seems like. Ive mostly used braid on my baitcasters but I definitely need to switch it up
bit.ly/3JXWxfj I’m in love with this line, especially for the price. Stretching out the line will help a ton with memory. Tie it to a tree and walk backwards with your thumb on the spool and then once you get two casts lengths out, start to pull and get the memory out. Doing that every few weeks helps
Here's a tip for unraveling nasty backlashes that you can't seem to fix: next time you're at the dentist, ask the dental hygienist if he or she will give you an old dental pick. File the ends smooth and use it to find and gently extract the line that is looped over your casting line on the spool, then grasp it and gently pull it out (you may have multiple snags, so keep at it)!
I had a backlash once (Like learning how to use a bait caster and doing so well then getting a backlash while practicing the 2nd day was learning and i made a bad cast and the lure hit the driveway and it backlashed) The backlash was probably about halfway into the spool and it was BAD! I ended up having to cut through probably 80 feet of line with a knife on the spool to get it out lol. haven't touched a a bait caster since. I should probably add that the line was braid and there was KNOTS INSIDE the line.
We went to "backlash university" when throwing big chunks of Bonita off Santa Monica pier at night for Mr. Shark. Sending line out into the dark is a whole new ballgame. The lights only shine out about 5 feet and down.
Hey Tyler, I personally haven’t heard much about it but do you use line conditioning for your reels and are they helpful in conditioning your line so your backlashes aren’t so bad?
It could help. I just never see any pro anglers using it to a large capacity, so I don’t really think it’s that helpful. If it was, they would be using it
Like you said in your video how people get anxious to use their new reel and they want to cast their first cast without ever dial down their reel so that it doesn’t backlash.
So wait, I see that you have an easier time taking the bird nest out, when I get a birdsnest I get overlaps and I get knots. I'm assuming I'm spooling wrong but any tips
I watched the other video and was wondering if you have fished round reels and the difference casting them. I fish abu , penn, and 1 millionaire. They all have the spool tension knob but no brake. My son just got me a abu bass rod reel combo for father's day. Haven't strung it up yet, I was thinking 10-12lb fluoro?
12 or 15lb would be best for him. I’m not sure what you mean by “round reels” but I use baitcasting and spinning. I’ve got lots of videos to help you out!
@@TylersReelFishing round bait casting reels. I use them catfishing and fishing the coast. One of mine is a Penn senator, I have a dozen or so various Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reels. Have you made a video of the different techniques for spinning and casting?
@@texasroofer8650 no problem. Yeah I fish round baitcasters exclusively in saltwater. I need a good winch to get fish out of the mangroves and low pros feel too small since I have bigger hands. Tightlines!
Depending on use, at least every 6 months. Braid can last a year or more, but for fluoro, I try to replace the line on the reels I use a ton every 4-6 months

@@texasroofer8650 It's similar. I have a shimano calcutta 151 that I use for reds and snook and its probably a bit easier to remove a birdnest tbh.
@@aaronhiggs I been fishing the new combo and it's pretty nice. Love the gear ratio.
Appreciate your time answering my questions.
@@texasroofer8650 no problem. Yeah I fish round baitcasters exclusively in saltwater. I need a good winch to get fish out of the mangroves and low pros feel too small since I have bigger hands. Tightlines!
Thanks for the hints. I am still a little reluctant to purchase one...
Go for it man, don’t be afraid anymore. That’s no way to live life
They're tips, not hints. Hints are like clues to the answer--teasing. A tip is a helpful pointer. Spread the knowledge. Peace.
@@riccardocarbo2479 So true...
How often do you change the line out?
Depending on use, at least every 6 months. Braid can last a year or more, but for fluoro, I try to replace the line on the reels I use a ton every 4-6 months
Nice
Brilliant!!!!!!!
Glad you like it!
That damn piece of wind got me again 🤣🤣 jk great video with great advice!!
I can get a backlash out but when i real in the line is all in knots and i have to end up cutting the line please help me
How tight do you put your line on your bait caster?
Pretty dang tight. This video might give you an understanding: th-cam.com/video/4mmBhsl_C88/w-d-xo.html
