@@DEBOSFishing : your right in most cases, but not for some of us who were sprayed with Agent Orange and the Toxin is working on all parts of our body. I am one of the lucky ones and had several operations on things that could be. I am recovering from my second mitral valve. AO attacked the first one and then the replacement and I am recovering from another one that is slide in behind the last replacement to stop the leakage. Others never survived the first one, or had a heart attack. Nothing can be done about the collapsing discs and many other things. Survived the brain tumor so far, after 5 weeks of radiation to stop the growth. Had to give up my fully loaded 21' Stratos. Last thing was shutting down my pituitary gland and with that went a lot of balance among other things. But 75 and living every day as much as back pain will allow. I love to fish and some days only get a few casts in before I am shut down by pain. But try to be thankful I am outside and not back in a hospital room. I never thought I would make 75 and hoping for one more summer. Eat desert first, nothing is sure about later ! Thanks for the video, always watching Utube , still learning about something, even if I can't get out and do them . Called smart to late :- )
For newbies: make a super long cast or before you go out, pull a bunch of line off, then take a piece of painters tape or electrical tape and put it over your line. Then reel the line back on. That way, if you get a backlash, and you will in the beginning, the line will not bury itself deep down into the reel and the backlash will be much easier to undo, because it won’t go below the tape level.
Bought my first bait caster this weekend and spooled it with about 30lb braid, and man was I surprised how unique and intricate these reels are. My first cast was out on the lake and spent the next hour un tangling my first bird-nest. I disassembled the reel and was impressed how complex it was. Long story short I took care of the tangled mess. Found my tension settings and used my thumb to add light pressure on the spool. Love how accurate and cool these bait casters are. Wish I would’ve watched this video before hand.
Been fishing for almost 7 decades and always hated bait casters..... but I bought one for flipping jigs into brush for smallmouth. After a few casts and backlash I remembered why I hated them. Came across your video, followed your perfectly clear instructions, set my new outfit up as you said and proceded to make about 50 casts in the backyard without any significant backlash issues! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain it so well. Very much appreciated 😊😊
I’m 54 years old and have ALWAYS hated an open reel UNTIL WATCHING YOUR VIDEO & understanding the mechanics & a little technique. THANKS! Really Appreciate It!
Back in 1953 my dad and I had reels from Sears.. JC Higgins, and they always back lashed. Fishing was a pain in the butt and we never caught anything but frustration. In 1960 we bought spincast and caught so many trout over the years. Now I am 73 and I live now in Italy where I just purchased a bait cast like yours. Thank you for saving me tons of frustration, I am sure to have less nesting, but expect it as all is new to me. Your tips were what I was looking for, and clearly taught by you. Ciao.
This is the most informational baitcasting video I have seen. I’ve been fishing past two weeks trying to learn the secret just by my lonesome, ofcourse not having any luck. Glad I stumbled upon this!!!
Been fishing for 40 years out of 50. Self taught. Not one lesson. Bait casters and the bird nest are my nemesis in the fishing world. Recently placed learning how to use a bait casting reel on my bucket list. Thanks for the best tutorial I have ever come across.
Ever since i first used a baitcaster years ago,my spinning lines gave beencollecting dust!once you get used to it and good yiu wont be using yiur soinning as often
I got my first baitcaster yesterday and was practising it in my backyard today. I really thought it would be harder. I managed 30 casts, hitting or very close to it 75% of the time, without a single birdnest after watching this video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
For real the clearest, easiest and overall the best tutorial I’ve seen on bait casting. Every summer I rent a house in the keys, my five kids and wife all like to fish with me off our dock and I’ve always had trouble plainly explaining how to stop a birds nest from jumping out of the reel every time they cast. I’m looking forward to not having to cast everyone’s pole for them this summer, THANK YOU!!!!
Kaelin Boone lmao😂😂😂, I’m pretty novice when it comes to fishing and only have a few rods and reels(one I bought for myself) and I have two spinning reels but what usually happens is I’ll get all setup with my bait in the water ready to just fish myself and someone will come along and take the rod out of my hand, then another one gets jealous and eventually I turn into their fishing caddy, cutting bait, taking the hooks out of the fish they catch and everything else...... but I have a great time making memories with my boys and the wife and when I look at pictures all I remember is the fun part.
This is EXTREMELY helpful! I've only used a baitcaster a couple of times. I asked for and got 2 for Christmas. I can't wait to try everything that you recommend!
Bought a baitcaster a few years back and barely bought a rod for it. Pissed me off that it would rat nest every cast. I'm used to spinners so it irritated me to no end. Now that I know what i'm doing wrong I've had 0 problems. You're awesome.
Just started off on bait casting reels , got my $40 one the other day and I’ve been practicing everyday , but I have to say your video really helped me I backlashed a lot now when I do it I almost never backlash , I just wanted to thank you for actually teaching me something unlike other vids I see
DEBO, I love ya man! Thanks for sharing this valuable info for us older group that lost or never had the important steps of fishing. I am 68 and truly enjoy your videos. Jim McCool, Wichita, KS
When I was a kid, 38 now. I was about ten at the time, I lost my Grandfather. Wish I could have gotten to know him better and grown up with him more, but is life. He had a lot of fishing stuff and left it of course to my dad. He had so many of these bait caster reels that my dad inherited it was a literal smorgasbord of reels, lol. I remember being taken to the lake by my dad for the first time with one of these bad boys. I spent almost my whole fishing trip unraveling "the rats nest." I can still even all these years later remember the frustration and anger that I couldn't figure the thing out, and I was an avid fisherman at that age(still am, just catfishing mainly). Have not picked one up in 28 years. This was a pretty good explanation of how to use the reel. But, I will say you intrigued me to try out the reel again. I hear their very durable and dependable reels so hope all goes well. Thanks for the help and you now have yourself a new subscriber. Btw, if you see this and feel like answering because I know this is an old video, is their a bait caster that you would recommend for catfishing? Have a good one!
Definitely the best baitcasting tutorial I've seen. You helped me finally understand how the brakes work to prevent me from nesting up the reel. I never like or comment videos. This video deserved both. Thanks for the great vid, Debo.
I’ve been using a baitcaster for 20 years don’t beat yourself up if you backlash. I still do it to this day. Great video Debo. Lots of people have a fear of baitcasters but you can’t beat the distance and smoothness of one. I learned by tying a light nut to the end of my line and casting in the yard over and over.
Thinking of switching to a baitcaster and watched so many videos on them already. But this one has just taught me so much that I didn't already know. Thanks👍
BRO!!! Hands down best advice ever! I've seen so many videos stated what you said "best reel with no backlashes" blah blah blah. I have been watching your videos, and subscribed to the channel, to get info from an actual person who does not bullcrap his viewers. I am a brand new baitcasting feesh friend and you recommended in a video a 7'1" MH perigee rod with a 7.1 reel from kat king and that is what I got. Been practicing casting in my backyard and seen so much improvement. Thanks again for all the info and videos you provide for your viewers. Respect brotha.
Life long spinning guy here who is just getting into baitcasters. I see a lot of spinning guys saying in comments that it's not worth the work and spinners are a lot easier. The learning curve might be less on a spinner, but even the most experienced of us will get some bad wind knots on spinners that require time to work out the same as bird's nests on baitcasters. They both have pros and cons. That said, if you took the world's most experienced baitcaster pro and the world's most experienced spinning pro, I believe the baitcaster would be able to nail slightly further, more accurate casts. Do the differences matter to the average fisherman, that's the real question.
Great points. I personally find a baitcaster easier, more accurate, and more versatile than a spinning reel. However, it boils down to opinion and what you're confident with. Thanks for taking time to leave feedback man!👊👊👊
I think you are a gifted teacher, attending to important details others overlook. Excellent tutorial, perhaps the best ever made. Now I don't need to use a heavy weight and can cast with a light lure. No more bird's nests. Thanks a million!
Mr Debo...I have been fishing for 38 years and THIS is the very best bait-casting video explanation ever. It helped me to avoid some of my bad habits! I also learned your roll-cast technique. Wow! The best cast ever! I bought my 17 yr old son his first bait -caster and was ‘worried sick’ how to teach him to avoid back-lash...well I shall share this video with him. Thank you. I have just subscribed and will follow your videos!!! Keep us the excellent tutorials!
This is a great tutorial. Definitely the best one I’ve seen. This video, along with your How to Clear a Backlash Fast video, helped me be 100% prepared for my first backlashes. Thanks for all you do Debo!
I've been spending a TON of time watching your videos lately, and I'm so glad I eventually watched this one. Been working on the side cast lately at a local lake, but looks like I'll have to give the roll cast a try. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and pass on the information!
Virginia Bassin' Thanks for taking the the time to check out my vid👍 For sure give them another chance. Practice and you'll have it down'in'no time....you won't go back 😉
Ok, so I stopped fishing for like 10 years. Then I get back into it last year and I struggled with distance and Backlashes. Last weekend I was frustrated. So I watched this video and knew what I was doing wrong. So I went back to basics. Cleaned and oiled/greased my reel, and went out the the park to work on it. Got it almost dialed in. 3/8 oz about 25/30 yards with a decent cross wind. I was getting up to 45 yards with the 1/2 oz. Forgot to use my thumb and was cast straight overhead and didn’t even realize it. Thanks for the video.
Luke Riley thanks brother, appreciate you taking the time to check out my vid . If you ever have questions or suggestions, let me know and I'll try to help👊
Best vid out here. I used spinning rods my whole life til about four or five years ago when I learned I could slam bass with tube's so I picked up a caster and never looked back.
By far the best baitcasting tutorial I’ve seen. I’m a casting legend on the back lawn. (In my kayak, not so much...) Gonna work this new bit of knowledge you’ve given me. Thanks again
Debo!!! Thank you for this video! I bought a baitcaster recently and watched a couple of your videos on how to cast and the one on how to fix that rats nest if it happens and your advice was very helpful. On my first outing with my new reel I was able to cast with confidence and yes I had just a couple of very minor tangles but worked them out and landed a couple of nice bass in the process. It’s kinda like driving stick, once you get the hang of it, you’ll never want to have it any other way!
I've been using bait casters for about 2 years now. I love them. I get a minor birds nest once in a while when I'm not paying attention. I haven't used my spinning gear since getting the bait casters. Left hand retrieve, cast reel in and right back to the cast again. It's effortless...
I am surprised at the negative comments!!!! This video has been a great help to me!!! A friend gave me a very nice outfit and said have fun with it …..I did not!!!! Your tutorial helped me out greatly!! I am still more accurate with my spinning reel, I think because I don't spend enough time with the baitcaster. I hope it is not a discrace, but I love my bait caster for trolling!!! Thanks, Joe.
joesneon hey man, thanks for the love. People are entitled to their opinion and I embrace that. I'll help the people who want help. Tight lines my man!
Like everyone else, I’ve tried several bait casting manufacturers, and settled on 2 favorites. I’ve tinkered with all the settings and adjustments, hoping to completely eliminate the dreaded backlash. Also, just like everyone else, I’ve found the “No Secret” to minimizing backlashes... basic fundamentals and (really) just my thumb. Thank you for this, very well made and easy to follow video. I think we all gained from it.
This was a fantastic tutorial with great advice. Nicely done! I find that I backlash waaaaay more when I try the overhand/overhead cast. I tend to sort of jerk it a little mid-cast, and it gets ugly real quick. *ONLY* using the sidearm and roll cast is the key for me.
Nathan Cross yep. People tend to throw the bait high when overhand casting...then it stalls or jerks...and NEST! The sidearm/ roll keeps the bait lower to the ground and people usually don't throw it as hard. Thanks for watching my friend, appreciate your support!
@@DEBOSFishing Yeah. I found it helpful too. I just recently gave my only baitcaster rod and reel (Fleuger) to my grandson, who was drooling over it in my garage. I could never cast the dam thing so I thought he might as well have it. He loves it.......I might buy another one and give it a try....again. You have cost me money, watching your Video...lol Cheers
just ordered a Pfleuger President XT baitcaster off of Amazon about 2 hours ago and realized I hadn't used a baitcaster since I was a kid... Your video was great man. I'm subscribed to your channel now and I suspect I will be referring to your videos often. Thanks brother!
Really enjoy your videos, Debo! I have never had the time or the patience to learn to use a baitcaster. Now that I'm 68 & retired I have both and enjoying the challenge to develop new skill sets. Your videos are such a valuable resource in teaching this "old dog" new tricks. Please keep up the good work that you do, it's greatly appreciated.
Good tutorial, I haven't tried bait casting in 20 years and always got bird nests. It looks like the reels have evolved and this tutorial makes me want to try it again.
I’m right handed but from casting right handed then put the pole in my left to reel pissed me off so I now have all my reels left handed so I can cast right reel left
Ashley McGhghy that's the way to learn. I'm in the group that switches hands each time. Lol I'm just a guy swinging a stick for fun. Thanks for watching and right lines!
Excellent video for a beginner like me! Simple and clear instruction...step-by-step with small “bite-sized” bits of info made it VERY easy to understand and apply! Keep up the great job!
Great tutorial Debo i just bought my first 2 baitcasters and am trying to learn how to cast loved this video ! cannot wait to apply what i just learned and practice practice practice
Cj Nerf yes! Get out and practice. You are going to backlash, it's part of the process. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll become! Best of luck my man!
Your videos really helped me out & convinced me to buy my first baitcaster today! I followed your how to spool a baitcaster video, & watched this one before trying it out. I'm really enjoying it so far! Thank you
Thanks for the Baitcaster for dummies video. I've been fishing since I was ten , forty years and I gave up on baitcasters because of the birds nest after every cast. I got into bass fishing this year and it seems everything is geared towards the baitcaster so I decided to try them again with a set up I won at a raffle 10 years back that was covered in dust from never being used. It looked like it was going to be a waste of time and money on line because I still couldn't get it. But after watching your video I couldn't wait to get back to the lake and try again, and when I did I had it down in about an hour. I still get the occasional one but their not that bad and I can usually get them out with a few pulls of the line. Now I'm hooked on them their so much easier to use then spinning reels, guess I'm going to be spending some money in the future on gear . Thanks for the great video.
Good vid. I started with some of the other vids and they gave me enough to start, but now that I've been doing some casting successfully I see the importance of learning the thumb feathering which you made obvious. Just came across this vid, Thanks!
Wow... If you are NOT a teacher, you missed your calling in life! Articulate, concise, thorough lesson, sir! And, as a physical science teacher, I appreciate that you recognize (as I try to convey to my students) that ALL "phishing" 😉 is nothing but Physics! Cheers! Keep up the excellent work...
Awesome video, thank you for really breaking down how the reel works. I been fishing for many years but never used a bait caster until a few years ago. I am still learning, thank you for breaking it down.
Best tutorial out there! Thank you SO MUCH! I’ve been using baitcasters for a few years to wonder why i get so many backlashes, i think the tension knob is the reason why!

I started on a cheap $35 Shakespeare Baitcaster Combo like 13 years ago. It was the biggest pos. But it taught me a lot. I got a abu García Pro Max now. It's a dream compared to the cheap Shakespeare synergy. This video even helped me with a few years under my belt. Thank you for the info.
I cast lowprofile baitcaster odd I use my left hand. I rarely backlash. My spinning gear is set up left handed and I cast with my right hand. Great tips by the way
Good video, sir. I am really struggling with the bait caster. I'm gonna try it again in the morning. I'm not in the habbit of subbing fishing channels, but I can sure as hell make an exception for you.
Bought my first baitcast reel online and just got it in the mail today! Thanks for the great tips, can't wait to get out there and try it! Happy fishing!

You're very welcome man
Just takes practice like anything else. Good luck on the water!
That means the world to me man. So awesome to see my vids helping folks out. Thanks for watching and tight lines👊
I've watched many other videos on learning to use a baitcaster, but this is by far the best and most clear! Good job!
Thank you very much sir, appreciate you watching!
I've been spending a TON of time watching your videos lately, and I'm so glad I eventually watched this one. Been working on the side cast lately at a local lake, but looks like I'll have to give the roll cast a try. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and pass on the information!
One of the two best tutorials on this I've found. I just got my first baitcaster, so I've watched several.
Excellent tutorial man. Might have to give the old caster another try! Well done!
Virginia Bassin' Thanks for taking the the time to check out my vid👍 For sure give them another chance. Practice and you'll have it down'in'no time....you won't go back 😉
The best demo on baitcasters by far. I've avoided them all my life. No longer... Thx!
I really hope it does help man! Thanks a lot for watching!
Thank you!
I've been wanting to try baitcaster for a while, but have been chicken. You've shown me what I need to know to get started. Great job!
I'm glad to help my man. Just takes some patience and practice! Good luck out there!
This is the best introduction video to baitcasters I've seen! I wish you would've made this when I was learning.
Great tutorial! Your video has now given me the confidence to pick one up.
Awesome! Good luck and thanks for watching!
By far the best baitcasting tutorial I’ve seen. I’m a casting legend on the back lawn. (In my kayak, not so much...) Gonna work this new bit of knowledge you’ve given me.
Thanks again
Nantucket Turnings hahaha thanks for watching man! Hope this helps you on the water!
You got that right! It's fun once you get it figured out. I'm glad the vid helped my friend!
There is a talent to teaching/coaching. This gentleman, in my opinion, has it.
That means a ton to me, thank you very much for watching!
2019, this vid helped me a lot!! the first long distance cast I made without a birdnest I swore to god I was a pro angler, thanks for posting!!
Hahah that's awesome to hear man. I'm glad you're getting the hang of it!
I've been using bait casters for about 2 years now. I love them. I get a minor birds nest once in a while when I'm not paying attention. I haven't used my spinning gear since getting the bait casters. Left hand retrieve, cast reel in and right back to the cast again. It's effortless...
Im getting my baitcaster tomorrow and going out for fishing straight after, thanks for the good tutorial man. Keep em comming!
Same here man can't wait 👊🏼🎣
You're welcome man! Thanks for watching and good luck 👊
@@raloo8813 awesome! Good luck! Hope you catch some biggins!
Tim Keckman tight lines brother
Thanks. I’ve been watching bait casting tutorials all summer and no one has explained it like this.
I'm very happy to hear that man. Thank you very much for watching! Have a good week!
You've given me enough confidence to go and buy one bro. Thanks alot man I appreciate you!
That's awesome! They just take some practice like any other new thing. Appreciate you watching!
Great Job, the Best explanation on Baitcasting on TH-cam..
Cheers
Thank you man, that means a lot. Appreciate you watching!
You have cost me money, watching your Video...lol
Cheers
@@steiny3353 hahah I'm sorry. The internet was only to help, not cost you money. Thanks for watching man!
just ordered a Pfleuger President XT baitcaster off of Amazon about 2 hours ago and realized I hadn't used a baitcaster since I was a kid... Your video was great man. I'm subscribed to your channel now and I suspect I will be referring to your videos often. Thanks brother!
Awesome man, you're now a #verifiedfeeshinfriend hope the vids are helping. Put in practice with it and you'll be fine!
Great video. When casting over head try holding reel where spool is vertical. Basically turn reel in its side. Not sure why but it help me lots
Yeah, that rotation helps. Thanks for watching and sharing your tip man!
That means a lot to me, Max. No better time to start than now. Knowledge is power and I too l i'l keep learning new things. Thanks for watching!
I was going to buy one today but changed my mind because of casting. Now i feel a little bit more confident and will go pick it up. Thanks
Great! Good luck and hope you catch some good fish on it!
Bought my Berkley rod and reel baitcaster today, spooled my line and going fishin' saturday! Thanks again
Good tutorial, I haven't tried bait casting in 20 years and always got bird nests. It looks like the reels have evolved and this tutorial makes me want to try it again.
Again clear concise information and very useful Debo. Thank you
D
Darryl D you're welcome! I need to make an update version showing the actual casts....hmm....
A stellar video that addresses the many variables behind a backlash. Well done sir!
I do the same.
Fully relates to you.
The proper way 👍
I felt the same so I switched to left handed reels
Agree with what others have already said. Best tutorial on baitcasting for beginners. Great job!
Best part for me was the actual show and tell of how and when the spool tension and brakes work.
Thanks man, glad that helped out. Thanks for watching 👊
Just bought my first bait caster tonight! This video was a ton of help! Clear and to the point!! New Sub!
Me to green lews xfinity combo
Excellent video. I've never used this type of casting, but now I know the basics. Thanks bud! Very informative!
You're welcome man, hope this helps you out!
@@tombeach3079 that means the world to me man. Happy that I've helped so many folks with this!
Where was this 15 yrs ago hahaha. Glad I seen this. Helped me out tremendously. Lots of practice is key.
Haha I've had a few folks say that. I'm just glad that this video has helped so many folks. Thanks for watching man 👊
Informative and thorough. Easy to understand.
Awesome, glad it could help 👊
Don’t know how people gives thumbs down to this video. Great tutorial and this was intentionally made to help other folks.
Damn good explanation from start to finish Loved the roll cast
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Your videos really helped me out & convinced me to buy my first baitcaster today! I followed your how to spool a baitcaster video, & watched this one before trying it out. I'm really enjoying it so far! Thank you
That's so awesome man, I'm glad I could help you out! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your success! Have a good weekend!
Thanks for all the info, Really looking forward to catching something impressive this season.
You're welcome man. Hope you find a new PB!
I have just started learning how to use a baitcaster reel. I honestly say I love it and have learned so much from these videos
Glad my vids are helping 👊👊👊
Fantastic video man! I GENUINELY learned alot.Keep em' coming.
This is why I do it! Love hearing things like this from people! Thanks for watching man and tight lines!
Awesome man, hope it helps you with the baitcaster. Thanks for watching 👊
Edward Sieferman hahah love this man! Greatly appreciate those words. I'm not a teacher but I play one on TH-cam 🤣😂 Thanks for watching man!
This is the greatest video out there this helped me learn A LOT!!!!
Thanks! I'm glad the vid helped out 👊👊👊
Thanks. This is the most informative video I've seen yet on the baitcaster.
Thanks for the help.. I like the no BS👍😊
You're welcome. Hope the vid helps folks out!
Awesome video, thank you for really breaking down how the reel works. I been fishing for many years but never used a bait caster until a few years ago. I am still learning, thank you for breaking it down.
Thankyou so much, now I know why my casting so short, there’s the button there to adjust
Glad the vid helped 👊👊👊
Best tutorial out there! Thank you SO MUCH! I’ve been using baitcasters for a few years to wonder why i get so many backlashes, i think the tension knob is the reason why!
Great video! Helped alot in figuring out how to work my baitcaster.
Anthony Coffey that's awesome man, I'm happy this helped. I need to do an updated video on the water and trouble shooting the common problems. Thanks for watching!
Can you make a video on the new reel?
Mike Heckathorn I'm glad it hped my friend. Thanks for watching!
CanadianBullFrog sure, which reel?
I cast lowprofile baitcaster odd I use my left hand. I rarely backlash. My spinning gear is set up left handed and I cast with my right hand. Great tips by the way
If it works for you, that's all that matters man! Thanks for watching 👊
I just bought one without even knowing how to use it. Your lessons are good help. Thanks.
Awesome! I'm glad the video helped you out!
Good video, sir. I am really struggling with the bait caster. I'm gonna try it again in the morning.
I'm not in the habbit of subbing fishing channels, but I can sure as hell make an exception for you.
Hahah well I appreciate that my friend. Let me know what issues you're having. I'll help the best I can.
Try starting off with braid first. It's a lot easier to control than mono or fluoro, then graduate up.
Bought my first baitcast reel online and just got it in the mail today! Thanks for the great tips, can't wait to get out there and try it! Happy fishing!
Great video, and very helpful.
Thanks for watching man 👊👊👊
