I really related to Katie and Rick's struggle to understand each other's interests, until they found common ground by the end. It's a shame that this film doesn't receive more love or recognition.
Animation isn't a genre, it's a medium. The entire concept of a "best animated picture" award shows how much the academy doesn't respect or understand what animation is.
Honestly this movie reminded me a lot of my Dad and I when I got into NYU against all odds. He was against me going. He was scared of me getting hurt. We actually had a big fight in regard to me going. Both of us love each other a lot so it was difficult to be apart even for a big change like that. But we got through it. He supported me 100% and we became even more of a team than we already were. This film really captured how realistic it is to have this struggle and I always tear up at the part when Katie and her Dad finally understand each other and sing Live Your Life together.
It's amazing how people went from being skeptical about "Mitchell's" due to its apparent focus on how technology is evil, to it almost being shelved due to the pandemic, to it being one of the best animated movies of the decade so far! "Mitchell's" was definitely my favourite movie from the lockdown era!
Omg yes I loved this movie! As I grew up over the three years, I really started to relate to Katie's quirkiness. Also the "dog pig dog pig dog pig *loaf of bread"* gag will always make me laugh 😂
Slight correction: Gravity Falls wasn't Mike Rianda's show, he was one of the directors on it, but the show was created by Alex Hirsch (who was a story consultant on Mitchells and has a cameo voice role). The film is also co-directed by Jeff Rowe who was one of the writers on Gravity Falls and later went on to direct Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Other notable gravity falls alumni who were involved include Matt Braly (Amphibia) and Dana Terrace (The Owl House) who did some storyboarding work but went uncredited.
i watched this movie over and over again when it was released, and still come back to it every now and then. Probably one of, if not, my favorite animated movies of all time. the movie had NO right to hit that hard but it did, and to this day, it lies in the top 5 movies ive ever watched. i liked the humor, the story, the message, the animation, everything.
I didn’t expect much from it initially. I randomly put it on one day, and in just the first 5 minutes, I was like "This is much more relatable than most family movies." I was interested from there, and man it was great
tbh this movie holds a special place in my heart as the first time I watched it was after I had gotten rejected for the first time and it really helped cheer me up and take my mind off things
Thank you for making the video and drawing my attention to the film An absolute masterpiece that seems to be talked about far too little I really had to shed a tear or two during long stretches of the film, it was very emotional, but also a lot of fun
Just adding my two cents here, but after this film dropped a lot of Neurodiverse people adopted both Katie and Aaron as Neurodiverse representation, and as an autistic person, I feel a lot of kinship in Katie specifically. This film means a whole lot to me, as Katie's relationship with her father is very much a mirror to that of my own, to the point I tried using this film to talk to my father about things. It... didn't work, but, I really did try LOL. It was never confirmed, but there's so many signs that can be read as these characters being Neurodiverse, and I loved this movie's messaging about being "weird". It's very much a comfort film for me.
This movie is really special to me, I remember watching it when it came out, and Katie really resignated with me, she really reminds me of me a lot of the time, and it's nice to see someone in some sort of media that is actually like me, she's just a great character over all and I love both this movie and her character, and all the other characters are all really enjoyable, I just really love this movie and it's hard to express through word much I love it.
the movie is just amazing, I watched it about 10 and here’s my opinion: the animation and the story of a family going on a big adventure is just something I definitely needed and showing that family is important, the animation style is gorgeous and the characters are just perfect, 10/10 banger
Listening to this, I'd recommend reading the article I just read on the telegraph. It's titled "Pixar has lost its magic - but a golden age of hand-drawn animation is dawning" It fails to mention Mitchells vs the machines, but does mention: Wild robot, Transformers one, TMNT Mutant mayhem, Nimona, Puss in Boots the last wish, And of course, Spiderman into the spiderverse.
It’s very funny to hear Dazz complaining about missing out on relating to the going to college character, while I’m sitting here, exactly Katie’s age when the movie came out
I watched this movie on a plane while going to Japan, the summer before my freshman year. I'll be honest: I cried at the end. It's so... perfectly relatable. It's hilarious. It's awesome. It's so heartwarming. It perfectly captures that struggle to feel accepted and respected. This is one of the greatest animated movies I've ever seen, And I truly hope the revolution Spiderverse caused never stops if it gets us more movies like this.
Man, there really is a lot of duality in these comments. The contrarians at the bottom are just saying that it's completely mid with nothing to like about it and claiming that it just has a "spider-verse coat of paint" even though it clearly has a different art style, meanwhile the fans at the top are often claiming that it's one of the best animated movies period, if not the best animated movie of the decade. Personally I give it at 8/10. It's pretty great, but some of the outdated internet humor definitely holds it back a little. I especially appreciate that the lead being gay was treated as a normal thing instead of being stuffed in some romance plotline. Don't get me wrong, I love all good representation, but it's nice to have the gayness represented as just being a normal part of life without it having to be the center of attention, because that's what it is, normal, and I hope we can reach a point of acceptance where we don't need specific representation anymore.
It's my all time favorite movie. It just feels like it was made specifically for me. The vibrant, expressive, and stylistic animation, the engagingly intense yet zany action sequences, the witty and clever writing style, and the heartfelt theme about family and being yourself appeals to me on so many levels. Plus Katie being an aspiring filmmaker with lots of creative endeavors who just wants to share her art with the world is super relatable to me. Also, we stan Aaron.
this movie really makes me feel, not only with how I relate to the characters and how those relationships are reflected of my own life, but just how I came to know this move. sure its how to say that I don't relate to Katie as someone who was and to a degree the same age as her going through a similar struggle of family dynamics and just college. but I also think fondly about when and how I got to know this movie. I don't remember who but I'm pretty sure one of my friends had either watched the movie itself or just heard of it somehow. either way it became a small watch party over discord one night and all of us loved it. for some time I think we quoted it every so often (an we still might even if we don't realize where the funny line came from) and I think I watched it twice? maybe because I wanted to show someone who wasn't able to be there on the first watch or because we just loved the movie that we watched to watch it again. who knows, maybe it a combination of both. either way, I still think back to that night and that watch party with a smile. maybe I'll try to convince them to watch it again one of these days soon
There is another animated movie about a teen growing up and going to university that you missed. It's an Extremely Goofy Movie. While not as good as "A Goofy Movie" I like it a lot.
Funny enough I’m actually writing a five page essay for my film class on Mitchel’s V.S. The machines for my final! I just love this movie and I watched it over and over again, it’s honestly my favorite movie! I feel like that if there was any movie that I could completely relate too it would be this one. Honestly this movie was one of my biggest contenders of what made me want to be an animator in the first place. I want to be able to animate something as unique as this.
This movie is one of my absolute favourites alongside Coraline as I really related to Katie and her inability to fit in until she found her people, her quirkiness and passion for art/films! (Or story mediums haha!)
My memory of this movie, is watching it with my late wife who passed away nine months later, so I think of her when I think of it. I also think of "Dog..Pig..Dog..Pig..Loaf of Bread"
This is probably the best Sony movie ever and maybe in my top 5 movies. This movie is really relatable for me because my family (of 7) is kinda…*wild*not say the least and my fav part is this: *dog pig dog pig LOaF Of brEAD* -system error-
I still love this movie with all my heart. As a gay guy who was, at the time, somewhat looking into colleges to go to, (spoiler alert: I'm not even in college anymore, I dropped out after a year LMAO) it was definitely one of those movies I needed to keep myself going and to eventually make it out of high school. Maybe one day I will make it into my dream college without having to deal with financial stuff, but until then, the most relatable thing in that entire movie to me was the bit at the end where it is explicitly revealed that Katie is in fact a lesbian, not an American. That whole scene just solidified my love for the movie even more. I loved her family dynamic, especially the mom who goes psycho near the end of the movie over the love for children, an A++ mom reaction IMO.
There was always something special about this movie that made me go back to it every time while eating cup noodles Also i forgot to mention i didnt watch it right after the release i watched it in 2023 just to help the people who are confused which is basically no one
