  • The Mitchells vs The Machines is a really fun family animated adventure. That doesn't mean it has no sins though.
Next week: Disaster sins and... I guess fantasy/adventure sins?
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

The trope of "parent disapproves of kid's lifestyle choices" is common as hell, sure, but the use of it in this movie is more grounded so it feels relatable rather than overused. It's not like Rick disapproves of her being a film student, because she's still going to that college and he at least attempts to see the value in her art. He accepts her decisions, but he doesn't trust them, which is what she actually needs rather than just blind support.

OMFAWTFG THIS!!!!!!! Parenting galaxy brain thought of the century right there. Especially the last bit. Blind support is such a problem, whether it be from a over achiever focused helicopter parent that doesnt discipline, or ultimately hollow praise regardless of how (un)enthusiastic, or 'toss em in the deep end lets see if they figured out how to swim yet' metaphor like parenting, or ....really anything other than actually getting to know the child and understand their reasoning, intentions, inspirations, abilities, etc......

The most contrived third-act Deus Ex Machina I've seen in a film was the glowy-hexagonal-prison-cell-things using the EXACT Robertson head screwdrivers for the control panels that the Mitchells happened to have. The movie mentions more than once that Robertson heads are usually woodworking screws, not used on appliances. There are some electrical applications that use specialty _combination_ screws, which can be interfaced by Robertson and/or Philips and/or Flathead screwdrivers, but the movie makes it clear that it's just a Robertson screw. There's no reason that should have happened. Unless PAL was planning on a pure Robertson being the least likely screw for a device like that, just so that nobody would have expected it?

Both of them needed to reconcile and she was just as guilty as him of creating the riff, thinking that 'her people' were just a group of likeminded teens like her rather than accepting her people were her family even if they werent exactly the same. And learning her dads way of seeing the world had a heap of inherent value and he was actually a person, not just a support character in her story.

He wonders if Rick is even redeemable after he made her miss orientation week, but honestly it was a relief when I first saw it. When you have movies like Hotel Transylvania where Dracula tried tramatizing his daughter so that she would never leave home, and the Croods where Eep's dad tried violently attacking the newcomer when his family said they didn't want to live in caves anymore, I had thought Rick cancelling her plane ticket was an attempt to keep her home forever, not just squeeze in some more family time at the last minute. I have seen so many cartoon fathers go overboard toxic with their relationships with their kids, this just felt genuinely boneheaded in comparison,

Most of my sins are when they are in the mall scene. #1 when they enter there are two glowy eyes. Yet, none of the attacking appliances have those eyes, not even the Furbies. Sin +1 ding. #2 when the robots attack people it's during the day. Come to think of it, it was day in France and Japan. There's no night? Sin +2, but getting back to #2, they obviously took the people in the mall when it was day, so then why are the lights out? Were the robots being polite, only leaving the Pal store to give false hope? Sure Pal could've figured out that they were going to the mall to the Pal store, which she didn't, so she could set up a trap, which she couldn't, but then why give a means to upload the kill code, whatever. Sin +3 ding. #3 only one tire popped? Wow the robo-apocolypse sure is lazy, a sin for each unpopped tire. Sin +6 dingdingding. #4 the attacking appliances still need power, and they only have a foot or two power cable, no extension cords. Sin +7 ding. #5 ex machina Big Furby zapping the router. That's not how routers are set up, in an environment like a mall you would have multiple radios in a mesh pattern, that way someone on the first floor has the same signal strength as on the third floor, or in the back versus the front. The actual router would be in the back offices in a closet or devoted computer room. Zapping one of those radios wouldn't do a thing, the other radios would just pick up, though admittedly at a lower strength. Sin +8 ding. #6 why does it take eight minutes to upload the kill code again? Something like that would be the size of a text file, which would be sent over in a second. How big is that file that you need to have as a kill code, ten gigs? This is unnecessarily stretching things out to an unbelievable means. Sin +9 ding. #7 he breaks into a store to get a tire. In what mall is there a store involving anything with auto parts? Clothes, toys, sports memorabilia, a taco stand I can see, but not an Auto Zone. Sin +10 ding. #8 he happens to find a tire that fits his, I'll be generous and say "vintage" car. He would have better luck going through the parking lot. Sin +11 ding. #9 no spare tire? Sin +12 ding. #10 He's grabbing a tire and putting it on like that's how it works. When I bring my car in for the tires changed they put the entire tire on a machine that circles around the inside edge to get the tire off, a new tire is put on and the same machine circles around to get the lip under the rim. He's not doing that here. Sin +13 ding. #11 Don't you need to fill the tire with compressed air? Otherwise it's just flat. I don't see anywhere in any mall, not even a helium tank to fill balloons, that can do this. Sin +14 ding. #12 the next scene is they're walking out of the mall with fire everywhere. Did they leave the car inside? Or did they drive it out, they went back to the entrance just so they can get the John Woo shot? I'm adding five for that. Sin +19 dingdingdingdingding.
