@@Droning-ON hi Ash yes all working great with no issues. I was having lag before I cleared the controller like you said now it seems fine no problems at all. Thank you 👍
Thanks for your presentation and very helpful information. I have the SC from a time when I owned the Mavic 2 Pro, now I own the Air 2S. One of the issues you did not mention is the range issue. Some have noted that the range/signal is not as good with the SC vs. the stock controller. I have had a fairly good experience linking the SC with the Air 2S though it doesn't always connect on the first try. So far the signal is ok though a couple of times the signal had a slight "hiccup" Do you believe that DJI updated the SC so that we get the (03) connectivity?
Although I just purchased my SC 2 months ago, I'll go clean and factory reset to give it a try. I am getting some video lag. Will report back...so I won't have to re-download firmware updates after a Factory Reset?

Hi Ash I have seen some videos about new DJI Fly app version 1.4.2? This has support for D-log on Air 2S? How do we update the Smart Controller for this update? Regards
Never used the smart controller so cannot really say yay or nay! My only gripe about all the DJI software is the amount of storage it takes up on your phone rather than keeping all the info on the main memory card, I have to keep deleting the app and re-installing it again just to wipe over 4GB of stored data from one flight?
Entirely depends on how you'll use your iPad, if you'll use it for other purposes then get that, but otherwise the SC is a risky product to buy brand new because we don't know it's shelf life now, DJI need only revamp Occusync again and it might be rendered incompatible with future drones.

I agree with your findings and comments completely. Thank You for doing this video and sharing it. The simple little amount of "TLC" is a good step for any device (as you mentioned) and a good habit to get into! I do find a small amount of lag when bringing up the map for the first time at a location but it catches up quickly! If you already have an SC and were thinking about its use on the Air2S this video is the proof. Yes, the SC is getting a bit limited going forward and probably not a wise purchase JUST for this drone. But I love using it as opposed to the stock remote/phone combo..
I have been using my 2s with smart controller since I got it. I love it. The only thing I see is that it looses contact and wants me to adjust the antenna.
Yes the antenna placement does depend on where and how you're flying, if you'll be flying directly in front then the antennas are good to be angled downward, but for high altitude flying having them horizontal works well.
Glad you made this video Ash, we all know who makes clickbait videos on this. And he still makes clickbait videos. As always Ash your videos are so well put together. Have a wonderful day🌞
Only some few SCs have this issues. Mine also. I did the installation as you described in the video twice the last weeks, without any success. Maybe your SC-Air2S connection is okay, but not for everyone. After doing my second new-installation I thought it is also okay for me now. But while flying with my third accu, I got the lags again. Lags mean, the live-screen is stopping for a moment (up to 2 seconds). Then it starts again and the distance ist jumping. Important to note, far away from any houses etc. And I never use screen recording. So your advice is maybe a good idea for some, but not for all owners of a SC. You should use a SC with issues as described. Then you would also say, it's dangerous to fly.
Andreas this may be your drone and also the area in which you live or fly. Does the same lag appear when using the traditional Air 2S controller, or only with the SC?
@@Droning-ON There is no lag using the standard remote controller. I am flying in this area very often without any issues. Another YTer showed this issue also (maybe you have seen his video). For me and also other pilots here in Germany it's the same: We cant use SC in combination with Air 2S.
I'm delighted that you've made this, Ash - the reports elsewhere struck me as biased and lacking objectivity. I too love my Smart Controller... so much easier and more convenient than faffing around with a phone..
Great video. I'm wondering if you could use an android cache cleaner on the smart controller like CCleaner to keep things clear? Of course nothing beats a full factory reset.
You could indeed side-load that kind of app onto the device, such as SD Maid, however that wouldn't necessarily clean all of the temporary files created by the proprietary DJI apps.
Hi buddy great video information about SC problems. I had the same problem but apart of your recommendation I did too disable cache recording, put in smooth quality and the SC works very well. Try it and tell what you think Thanks.
I wish I could fly with my teen son I bought him one but can't afford one for myself,,,thanks for the awsome videos I would love to get awsome footage with my so,it would be great bonding time
The current version of the Flyapp (1.4.0 ) that was released with the Air2S is noticeably more "hungry". Even on my phone, I had to put it to High-Performance mode in the battery settings to smooth out some lag using the phone and the regular controller...The app is really intensive and probably not very well optimized (or just rushed through for the S release)
Exactly, the functionality of the DJI fly app has increased substantially over the last year, especially with it now supporting more drones, increasing its footprint. Thanks for the comment.
Ash, I also published a video regarding the SC and the Mavic Air 2 (not the S) showing some significant stutter and I condemned the SC firmware update of 01.01.0040. However, one of my viewers suggested I view your video for some help. So, while I had cleaned out all my files (manually) I took your (good) advice and did a Factory Reset. Bottom line here are the steps I have taken, Factory re-set, Swapped Micro SD card (SanDisk Extreme Plus), Set SD card as default record location, Turned off Cache recording, Transmit in Smooth (not HD). While the image on the SC may be somewhat better, it is still skippy and not smooth at all. one 'symptom' may be the load time of the Fly App. Before the reset, it was taking 16 seconds to load. In 2 starts after the reset it still took 12 and 14 seconds, a long time. Is it possible not all SCs are "equal"?? Or, do you have any other suggestions that may help my situation. Like you, I really do not want to 'go back' to my phone. The SC is the only way to go, but.............. I'm not a happy camper right now.
Thanks for the comment Doug, out of curiosity have you tried factory resetting the drone itself? Perhaps you've set something specific which needs reverting back, we shouldn't assume that these communication issues are all the fault of the SC :) it's worth a try.
He Ash, I always enjoy your videos and respect your opinions & thoughts. I have the Air 2S and the Smart Controller, I've yet to try them together though. I'll definitely try it after watching your video, however I do think there was some/a little lag. Just my opinion after watching your video, but I'll be sure to try it for myself! Thanks as always!
Thanks Brad! The Smart Controller without question isn't the fastest device out there and may not be as slick and smooth as your new mobile phone, but it is entirely usable and practical, it's quick and easy too - honestly Brad you'll love it and won't be disappointed once you start using the two together.
Excellent review, Ash. I’ve never had any problems with my SC; just wish it was IOS. I use the SC whenever I can; it just doesn’t work with most photogrammetry apps; so I do do use my IPad Mini at times.
The other reviews are correct. I am getting signal problems with my smart controller. The range is limited compared to the regular controller and i am getting screen lags on a regular basis. Dji needs to release a new smartcontroller for 03.
@@ChristiaanRoest79 can you check something for me, eject the SD card from your Smart Controller and see if that speeds things up? Or, if you've never had an SD card installed, install one and see if that helps?
I actually sold my SC to get funds for the air2s, especially after purchasing the fpv. I don't mind the new style controller and kind of prefer the screen being above the sticks rather than below. And with the screen brightness of the s20 series, and screen size, it's still just as good as the SC. However I do regret getting rid of it.
The SC is a risky product to buy brand new because we don't know it's shelf life now, DJI need only revamp Occusync again and it might be rendered incompatible with future drones. Look at the used market first perhaps.
To be honest I was being put of by these comments make it makes sense because when my mobile slows.i clean all the old files and then it's back to normal but I do feel it is very over priced considering it's quite old now. Good review as always 👍👌😁
Nope, still bad performance with tons of lag when using this with my Air 2S. I bought a brand new Smart Controller direct from DJI after seeing this video and thinking makes sense but it was laggy even as brand new. Glad to see yours works and some others have luck but this controller is brand new (or what I thought was new but have suspicions it was a used/refurb shipped to me under the guise of new) but nothing I tried helped. It even lags navigating menus when not connected to the drone. Controller feels nice though, and the features are great, but it's just terrible for performance and reliability when flying.
Thanks for the comment Blood Wolfe, have you tried reseting all of your DJI Fly settings to defaults, including specifically the transmission elements? I believe that these settings are stored with your account, therefore if you've set something specific then that might be the issue. The other thing that I'd like you to check is your SD card, in the Smart Controller - try flying without it installed and see if that makes any difference?
if you had it to do again, would you still get the smart controller? I'm thinking about buying the air 2s fly more w/ smart controller but after reading the complaints and the fact that it's like $700 extra I have my reservations..
I have zero problems with mine either , mind you I would only buy second hand if I was buying now , new price is overpriced (as it was when I first bought mine at release) for future proofing I would hold out for a possible updated SC2 , I have a pretty good idea who you are referencing re dangerous , I unsubscribed due to his constant click baiting it was getting boring .
Thanks for the comment and absurdly, clickbaiting is the worst in this community, it spreads misleading and false information. Glad that all is good with yours!
One thing I don’t get about SC praising videos. How do you guys skip over half the buttons not being available in the Fly app? A plethora of buttons on it (2 on the back, 2 on the front, 5d button) and only the same 2 customizable actions available, like the normal remote. Or the second wheel, which can’t be used for useful things like adjusting exposure, like in GO4. It only does zooming, which is blatantly useless on the 2S since you need to give up both 5.4K and LOG in order to have zoom available. And not to mention the compass incorrectly rotated at 90° which DJI STILL did not fix….. Also, mentioning battery as a plus… seriously? :) Despite weighing more than the standard remote and a very large phone combined, battery life is less than half that of the standard remote. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it doesn’t have its good parts… but I don’t get why so many people are closing their eyes to what should be clearly unacceptable for SC customers. I mean come on, incorrect compass heading on a dedicated device? Too lazy to implement hardware buttons in the new app? For $750?…..
@@Droning-ON I never said "dangerous", someone else did. But you are exaggerating saying buttery smooth lol. >>>>>>>>>>>>>That was like watching a REALLY bad gaming card choking on a AAA game.
@@foam27 then you clearly missed what I said almost exactly after the timestamp that you provided, that it's "not a fast device, but its not dangerous", which is the point here. When you pan you do see some incredibly minor stutter, but it's an old device, it doesn't make it an unusable device.
Hi Ash Well I still think it's dangerous, if I would show up at home after spending that much for a new radio my WIFE would kill me. I just have the one DJI drone, the Mini V1, and I don't think I will ever buy a new one. For me they're boring. I could see why for work you can use one but not for me. Thanks again for the video and information.
0:54 That's interesting, because it is these who do have the smart controller that are saying it is dangerous, or at least not as responsive as the standard remote. I have watched at least 3 TH-camrs that I know they use the smart controler. And there is another way to look at this. You have spend that much money on it, and it is understandable that you will try to justify your investment. However, the truth is the smart controller is old tech working with a new tech drone. It is like asking a grandma run en electric scooter. I never bough one because of the reason I mention at the beginning, Get's old and outdated on a tech landscape that is changing ever so fast. People shouldn't have to go through a factory reset every day or other day when they are presented with legginess. I like your videos but I don't like your take on this one. Your experience after factory reseting a hardware does not represent everyone's experience.
I disagree, those three TH-camrs are the minority against every consumer that has bought it and has commented here (look for yourself) agreeing that there are absurdly no issues. Some even say that even their mobile phones have slowed down witgtje latest 1.4.0 DJI Fly release. It is an old device now but the reality is that it works brilliantly, I've used it for every single video so far for the Air 2S. You can disagree with my testing and demonstration here but the fact remains that there is zero issue here, genuinely.
Seems like an old under powered device that's on it's last leg and can barely get the job done unless you give it a lot of TLC...At this point anyone would be absolutely foolish to buy the Smart Controller for $749 + tax un less you just like buying dead end technology. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and wait for the SmartController v2...it's likely just around the corner.
Jet, that's just absolutely untrue. Once again, I reiterate that I've used it for every single Air 2S video shot so far, with screen recording on. I haven't flown the Air 2S yet with it's regular controller and have no desire to at all, because the Smart Controller is perfectly usable, without issue. You don't own one, so you honestly can't pass judgement on whether its worthwhile to buy, please have a scroll and read the comments from owners of the SC. You're helping to spread misleading information at this time about this device, that's not cool.
@@jetmartin9501 did you miss the part of this video where I recommend keeping an eye on the used market? As mentioned, this device is too expensive for most, even when it was first launched it was too expensive, it's a luxury which many can't afford, but those that an afford it LOVE it.
BTW when you reset the Smart Controller back to it's original factory settings what do you think happens with all of those updates that you applied since the SmartController shipped?
@@jetmartin9501 oh dude, surely you're aware that a firmware updates the ROM, which when you factory reset is READ ONLY. I wish I could fly with my teen son I bought him one but can't afford one for myself,,,thanks for the awsome videos I would love to get awsome footage with my so,it would be great bonding time
Did I really
No, it's a scam, it's been reported.
@@Droning-ON thank you for letting me know and keep the great videos coming
Good video and advice Ash
Thanks Lyn!
Thanks for the info, im going to give it a try. 👍🏼
Good man, it's a brilliant device and I couldn't do without it! Every video shot so far from my Air 2S review set has been using it.
Hello 👋Very good movie. Thank you for sharing. Keep it up. Have a nice day my friend.
Great video. I love the SC. Cheers.
Great video Ash.
Thanks! Cheers for the comment!
Bottom line here are the steps I have taken,
Factory re-set, Swapped Micro SD card (SanDisk Extreme Plus), Set SD card as default record location, Turned off Cache recording, Transmit in Smooth (not HD).
@@Droning-ON Have not done that and it is definitely worth a try. Thanks. 👍👍
Waiting for mini 2 SC support...For now i love SC because work perfect with my air 2 & 2 pro :D. Nice review bro
Ahhh yes, same here!! It's odd that it's taking so long!!
The other reviews are correct. I am getting signal problems with my smart controller. The range is limited compared to the regular controller and i am getting screen lags on a regular basis. Dji needs to release a new smartcontroller for 03.
Thanks for the comment, however have you tried the suggestions in this video before writing off your SC?
@@Droning-ON Yes, i did the factory reset but still laggy. Not as laggy as before though. Regular controller has better range.
@@ChristiaanRoest79 can you check something for me, eject the SD card from your Smart Controller and see if that speeds things up? Or, if you've never had an SD card installed, install one and see if that helps?
@@Droning-ON Tried that. No difference :(
@@ChristiaanRoest79 on the controller itself, do you have 'WiFi' turned off while flying?
Very beautiful video 😊💕
Like 154 😊💕👍👍
See you soon from Hawaii , Aloha😊😊💕
I actually sold my SC to get funds for the air2s, especially after purchasing the fpv. I don't mind the new style controller and kind of prefer the screen being above the sticks rather than below. And with the screen brightness of the s20 series, and screen size, it's still just as good as the SC. However I do regret getting rid of it.
Interesting to hear, I can't imagine going back to depending on my phone, but each to their own ;)
I want smart controller. Should I wait to see if they release new? I wonder !! But this makes me want to buy one now!
Thanks dude! Appreciate the comment!
Wow yes your right, it's just like a phone if it got so many windows open and so many videos pics and crap it will make your phone slow.
I'm thinking about buying the air 2s fly more w/ smart controller but after reading the complaints and the fact that it's like $700 extra I have my reservations..
great video Ash, break through all the BS around about this.
Thanks dude!
The most dangerous thing I've ever seen. We are all lucky to still be alive🤣🤣🤣
Haha absolutely, don't go near it, danger danger 😅😅😅
@@Droning-ON You tell em Ash ;)
Hehe will do ☺️
@@Droning-ON hahhah
Неужели только я фризы на видео вижу!? Не то, что бы опасные или критичные, но на аналоговом видео таких нет.
I disagree that the SC is very dangerous...it refused to pair with my Air 2 and I almost hit someone with it when I threw against the wall...
Hahaha, indeed very dangerous, it's a heavy unit 🤣
7:38 what the hell is he talking about it's dropping frames like crazy!
"like crazy" is an absolute exaggeration, come on buddy watch the clip again, it's absolutely not "dangerous" :)
You did make some comments that were clearly incorrect. "No latency at all. Not in the slightest."
Hahaha very true 😅😅
You can disagree with my testing and demonstration here but the fact remains that there is zero issue here, genuinely.
lol there is a lot of latency . im the only one who s watching this vidéo with good eyes?
Blank screen, losing video almost every flight. Virtually un-usable even after following your advise.
Device hygiene is key. Don’t sell your SC guys. Works perfectly fine with the Air 2S.
Absolutely! Thanks for the comment dude!
IS IT DANGEROUS ? I PERSONALLY KNOW OF AT LEAST 3 PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN KILLED BY THEIR SMART CONTROLLER.
@@Droning-ON Simple question....So you would recommend that people go out and buy the SmartController today @ $749 + tax.
A factory reset therefore only erases the writable aspect of the ROM, leaving the updated firmware in place...this applies exactly the same to ALL devices which cater for updating of the firmware.
