Hey Ed! Thanks for the review! New to your channel (just subbed) and fairly new to drones so I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos!
So far, I love my Smart Controller. The reflection is a bit of a pain but so far so great otherwise.

Nice video. I bought the Smart controller together with my Mavic 2 Pro some years ago. Since i have been using Samsung Galaxy Note and now Ultra phones im familiar with the android syste. I just ordered and got delivered original DJI replacement batteries for the controller.. Never know when the batteries get bad. The 4 Drone batteries started to swell after aprox 3 years so now im using new Patona Platinium batteries , from a Germany company. Manfrotto ProLight bag fits good to my drone and controller.

Terrific Review. Honest and informative - covered a number of points not seen on other reviews. Nice logical sequence and easy listening. Here in Perth, Western Australia, brightness is a problem for around 9 months, so this controller with its bright screen and other features is great. I will be getting one, when the price reduces. Thanks Ed - really helpful.

This is a tough sell for me. I am used to the 7.9" screen on my iPad Mini 4, which was less than half the cost on sale. If they would offer it as an upgrade when you buy the Mavic 2, for say $399, I might have gone for it. Thanks for the video review!

Thanks for your review ED. I was interested in purchasing this DJI Smart controller. However, after speaking to DJI themselves, I realised that it's missing an important feature. It is NOT possible to set the RTH point to the controller itself! It will only return to the launch point. I couldn't believe that this feature was missing from a device that costs in excess of US$700. Setting the return to home to the handset is very useful especially if you launch your drone from a moving boat!

    • @EdRickerVlogs
      @EdRickerVlogs  ปีที่แล้ว

Well this Smart Controller from 2019 would work for the Mavic 2, but you'd need to get the newer DJI RC Pro to work with the Mavic 3 Pro. In the case of the 2019 Smart Controller, Billy might be right. But in the case of the newer DJI RC Pro, I think it has better range than the stock controller (RC-N1).

I've never been able to update the Smart Controller's firmware manually. Regardless of what I've tried, I receive and "unable to connect to the internet" message. After spending a considerable amount to time with DJI's telephone support, they finally replaced the unit with a new controller with more up to date firmware. That replacement was about 9 months ago, but I'm still unable to update the replacement Smart Controller's firmware manually, including downloading it from DJI's support website using the DJI Assistants app, where I receive a "Connection Failed/Retry" message. Interestingly enough, I have no problem connecting the unit to my Linksys Velop Mesh system and using it's internet related apps. All of the Mavic 2 Pro's software updates regularly, either at home on the Linksy system or when I'm out flying. I'm about ready to purchase the Mavic 3 w/the RC Pro Controller, but haven't made up my mind on keeping my low mileage Mavic 2 Pro or selling it. Other than one unrecoverable (pilot error) crash, where I had to replace the Mavic 2 Pro last August, I've experienced no issues flying either Mavic 2 Pro drones with the replacement Smart Controller. Any suggestions at this late date would be helpful. Keep up the great work, as your professional videos have been quite informative and educational.

Hi Ed. I'm looking for advice. I have the DJI Smart Controller and the DJI Mavic Air 2s. I have little experience flying drones. I spent a year with the Mavic Mini, using an iPhone 10 as the controller. With the new Smart Controller I have a nice big screen. Here is my problem:
When getting ready to take off, I start the drone, so it's ready to pair with the Smart Controller. Then I start the Controller itself.
Either the controller pairs with my drone immediately, and I can go fly. Or, instead of that, the controller presents a new screen I've not seen before. The screen displays a single photo of DJI's Mavic Air 2s (as it is part of a horizontal list of drones to select from, but only the Air 2s is there).
It forces me to select from this "list of one drone".

I cannot move past that screen without making a selection. The "back" button on the upper-left of the controller doesn't solve the problem
I'm thinking DJI programmers added a bug in one of the recent updates to the drone or to the controller or I installed an update from a bad source.
Anyway, I tap on the photo of of the Air 2s and suddenly the screen displays a short notice saying "Unpairing...". (So, the controller logic also assumes the devices are already paired, which they are not). Then the screen freezes up. Have you ever seen anything like this?
I keep the latest software updates installed on both the drone and the controller.
Anyway, when I run into this problem, I have to shut off both the controller and the drone completely and start over.
The next time I go outside to fly, I'll either get a successful connection between controller and drone with no problem or I'll again get this "rotary circus" on the screen displaying "Unpairing...".
Do you think I need to ship my controller to a DJI repair facility and ask them to configure it?
    Thanks in advance.

It's been several years but I just purchased the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom smart controller. I have seen a number of unboxing videos of people getting theirs and they would get in the box a USB-C cable and a Power Adaptor.
When I got mine last week there wasn't a power adaptor. DJI told me they don't include it. It seems when you pay this much for a Smart Controller you could at least put in a $5.00 power adaptor wouldn't you ?

i had to make a choice of which controller to buy, the smart controller or the moverio bt-300 and i went with the glasses and don’t have any regrets, i’ve found the glasses have some limitations and from articles i’ve read so does the sc, the biggest turn off is the sc only works with the mavic 2 or zoom and just recently the matrice if it would have connected to my phantom 4 p 2.0 i might have gone with the sc.

Getting started has been a bit of a struggle and the documentation is sparse at best. Even the quick press followed by a long press on the battery was a bit strange - though I do understand the "why" of it. I already have a Part 107 license to go with my CP-ASEL-IA .

I am very late to this video and I am not interested in the orange Evo2 hat’s basically just catching up to the Mavic two. My question is quite simple why would you need a filter if you want your footage be sharp from that distance. Become more blurry with motion blur? I just don’t see why the 180 will reply to a Drone. Thanks again for the great instructional video you’re always very informal

    • @EdRickerVlogs

Hi Joe, many people like the look of motion blur in their footage. Not too much, but just enough to look realistic especially with fast movements. I prefer motion blur over no motion blur. Pictures are a different story...no motion blur is generally preferable with pictures.

Subtle but a very strategic factor in a drone pilot’s effectiveness and compliance with FAA refs, whether recreational or commercial drone pilot, is LAANC. Google for more details on LAANC. Another topic I suggest is making the drone community more aware of the many areas for drone commercial services and how to get the FAA Commercial Certification. Finally pinpointing good drone pilot ground school courses to prepare for the FAA certification exam. These topics will gain you favor with the FAA. Especially now that LAANC will inspire a surge in drone procurements and commercial drone pilot opportunities. Mavic 2 drones have all the capabilities but novice pilots need communication to synthesize the big picture for the pilot to get the biggest payoff for their investment in drone technology.

I have the smart controller and I would never go back to the regular controller and a phone (I have a note9). The screen brightness and overall usability of the extra programable buttons makes it completely worth it. The people who are complaining about the price are missing the point. The Crystal Sky screen is $500, this is only $150 more than that and it can be purchased with a drone for only a premium of $400. Add to that, when you are a professional like you and I are, having a backup controller in your kit is a very responsible way to go.

Good video. It was kind of interesting to hear some of your ponderings on backwards compatibility from 2 yrs ago. DJI must have been listening a little bit since it is now compatible with other drones. Also I haven't heard anyone mention that if you buy the smart controller as part of a fly more package you actually only pay around $412.

I noticed you selected Raleigh, I’m out of Greensboro and I’ve been looking into getting in the quads/drones atmosphere . I’ve been avoiding DJI due to price point but after discovering your channel and watching several of your videos, I think you might have me sold on getting one of their products. I would love to see some of these in person if you have the time one day. Great work!

Hahaha, I just watched another one of your videos, apparently you know Patrick. Patrick is a buddy one of mine, I’ve been consulting with him about quads but I don’t think he has any DJI stuff. Small world

Considering it's large price but smallish 5.5" screen, why not buy a larger 7.8 Crystal Sky monitor for less $$$?

I love my smart controller. Some Iphones are more expensive than the SC. The activation & firmware updates are so simple now and totally automatic with Wi-Fi. It is SO easy to control the aircraft with which makes it a joy to fly and I can SEE the screen for a change. As of 14 May 20 The following aircraft can be added and managed in Aircraft Management on the SC. Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom, Mavic 2 Enterprise, and Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual. More will no doubt be added.

The Smart Controller does pair with more drones now since this video was made. I just ordered the Air 2S fly more package with the smart controller. My cell phone can not handle the DJI app, and after hearing horror stories of expensive phones overheating and such, the smart controller is a godsend for me. This is my first major upgrade because all this time I have been flying the GoPro Karma. The best thing about the Karma is the controller and screen are all in one. The Karma is a workhorse and will never let you down as long as you never update it, switch cameras or anything. If you do, pairing issues happen and the drone becomes a paperweight since GoPro stopped all updates 2 years ago. Say what you will about the Karma, but I have 6 film nominations using it. Anyway, being able to have another all in one controller with DJI is something I'm looking forward to. From what I hear the new Pro 3 will link with the Smart Controller as well. I'm really looking forward to receiving my new drone and controller.... and that 5.4K from the Air 2S!
