    I bought my first drone three days ago. I did my research and splashed the cash. Very proud owner of an Air 2S. As a total techspaz, all my friends said I’d done my dosh and would smash the drone first flight. This thing is Dave-proof. It won’t run into stuff, comes back to me if I screw up and lose it and makes snazzy little vids from any footage I’ve shot exploring my world with my new Birdseye view flying machine. It’s great. I can accept that it was pricey. I’ll probably only buy one drone. I think it does what I need it to do. I’m happy. Thanks geeks and nerds, you’ve come through again!!

      Captain, I have a Mini SE, a Mini 2, and a Mavic Air 2, and will soon have a Mini Air 2S. My Mini 2 controller can be used to control my new M2S. All DJI can controllers can be used on their Drones, except for my Mini SE. But the performance of my Mini2, and my MA2 is greater than great, Portography and long range journeys. On the same controller. My new M2AS. Should be compatible

      Agreed. This guy seems to have made his mind up to not endorse this model at all. What a waste of video - I usually respect his insights. But this one was obviously marred for some weird reason. The sensor alone on this drone makes it more desirable. I think Air 2 owners are jaded. Look at the other reviews - "air 2" and "air 2s" on paper looks like a slight upgrade. I feel, like many others, that this is a completely different drone than the original air 2. "The 5.4k isn't even usable on most features". Huh? You shoot a scene and 5.4k and you can crop and zoom in without losing quality. Sorry, but that's huge vs. doing the same thing with 4k resolution.

    I'm glad you were honest and added the disclaimer about how you don't have any inside information, because that's a big factor. Early on you called it a "cash grab" and said that they were saying "We're losing money, we have to make money..." and so we get the 2S. The reality is that for the latest quarter, ending February 2021, DJI had a net positive income growth. No, they weren't losing money. As for "They should have kept the price the same", that's something that no business finance person, ever, would say without any analysis. Because you know what went up with the new camera and the new sensors? COGS. Cost Of Goods Sold. When it costs more to make, it costs more to buy. It's also entirely possible that components that didn't change have increased in cost over time, and that factored into the increase. Just like the global chip shortage and other shortages are pushing up prices in other areas. It may be that DJI had held the line on price on the Air 2 in the face of rising costs, but the release of the upgraded version was the right time to increase the price due to those changes. As the saying goes, there is no free lunch. No conspiracy here, no prepping the public for a more expensive Mavic/DJI 3 Pro. Just a price increase due to increased manufacturing expenses.

    • @CAPTAINDRONE798
      @CAPTAINDRONE798  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately your guess at price increase falls short when you look at the added cost for the fly more combo. The exact same combo is available for the Air 2 at a much lower price (same batteries, charger, tray, etc).

    • @geezerpleasers_OG
      @geezerpleasers_OG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CAPTAINDRONE798 That ignores her comment that "It's also entirely possible that components that didn't change have increased in cost over time, and that factored into the increase. .... It may be that DJI had held the line on price on the Air 2 in the face of rising costs, but the release of the upgraded version was the right time to increase the price due to those changes". As a former cost accountant, I'd say this person nailed it. It's not good enough to just throw out negative theories about corporate behavior made up out of thin air without even trying to look at the way expenses are calculated and prices are set in the real world. My one quibble with the person's comment is regarding the Feb 2021 income figure. While DJI did book a very nice income growth figure, they show negative EBIDTA, ROI and ROC figures for the previous 12 months. That doesn't necessarily argue that a price increase was necessary, since it's an across the board figure. You'd have to look at the WBS figures for each individual area to make that determination.

      @ednafronkelbarger8601 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CAPTAINDRONE798 Unfortunately your fictional storytelling falls short because it fails to understand the effects of inflation. Ever been to a grocery store? When the price of chicken goes up, it's not because they're selling All New Totally Upgraded Chickens. Labor costs can, and do, increase. The cost of raw materials can and does increase. Software support systems can and do become more expensive. The cost of regulatory compliance can and almost always does increase, especially in the wake of being put on the US Commerce Dept. Entity List. And on, and on, and on. Literally nothing in your story has anything to do with the fine grained detailed way that prices are evaluated in the real world of business. You're one of the best, if not the best, drone reviewers on TH-cam, but you're not qualified to speak about how DJI sets prices.

    Steve, Just re-watching this old video. Happy to say the I dont think your comments on DJI Support are true any more. With the Air 2S I have contacted them a few times and they have always been spot on . I got the Air 2S Fly More with the Smart Controller and I think it is the single best prosumer drone DJI has ever launched. I agree it is pricey but in todays world everyone is out to get anything they can. Its not just DJI. It is every market in the world. I paid 1500 USD for the FlyMore with the Smart Controller and I think it was worth every penny. In the drone world I believe the rule is "get what you can afford". If you try to go cheap, you will get cheap.

      @@pikapikacool Well, they probably don't want Captain Drone viewers to be tempted away by the competition. Sure, other drone reviewers may compare DJI to their premium competitors. At that price point, many would just stick with DJI assuming geofencing isn't a problem. However, DJI products suddenly don't look as attractive to people with a low amount of cash and that's where the budget drones can be a problem. Seems to me they really don't want the likes of Hubsan and JJRC to steal away potential customers or for people to be made aware of the plethora of alternatives out there.

    I totally agree with your Steve; everything you said was a fact as far as I'm concerned. I don't want to be so critical of DJI because they are the best drone company, but if they weren't so "cash grabby", everything in the DJI Air 2S including the sensors could have been implemented on the Mini 2 except the camera, and staying at around the same price. And they rarely update drones if they are older than like 3 months. All the DJI criticism aside, this was a fantastic video, thank you Steve for providing us with all this content.

    Boy that Mavic 3 price prediction was quite the understatement. For waiting 2+ years to buy the new Flagship I was rewarded in December 2021, with not $1500 or $1700, but $2299 and $2999 for my Flymore. Add the (not included RC Pro and another battery and it was $4409!!! That hurt, but in for a penny, in for a pound! 💷 many many pounds.

    Hi Steve, first thing I will like to say is thank you for reviewing all drones, including competitors of DJI and if they don't like it, thats completely their problem. I also love DJI drones and up till today I still have my trusty DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, It is an awesome product. What I do not understand is that lately people's new Mavic Air 2 and Air 2 S drones have fallen from the sky and that's happen to tourists in my country, now I'm sure the drone is not the problem as I find DJI drones extremely reliable but I tend to notice its mostly I think people are not taking time to update their drones as well as to IMU caliberate their drones. My Zoom warns me if it detects that the compass calibration was not done and for me I JUST CANNOT AFFORD to lose my drone.
    The other issue is the price, whilst it fits DJI's price portfolio, it certainly doesn't fit mine as I will never want to buy a $1400-$1600 drone, in my countries currency it is about SCR30,000-SCR40,000 range and thats insane. Thats also equivalent to a full fare return Emirates Economy class ticket to Canada or Australia.

      I thought the original Air 2 was underpriced myself. It's such an amazing value. At the time, it was easily the best drone under a grand and honestly was surprisingly close in quality to drones Twice the price.
      I think the Air2s has $200 worth of upgrades, but the spiked price of the Fly More Combo is probably a cash grab.

    Great Video!!!!. You are all right. In my case, I bought my Mavic Air 2 Combo two months ago at a great price (700) US dollars, (new), and what I am going to do is wait until I have the opportunity to buy the Air 2s. and use it with the remote and battery of my previous Mavic. The other thing that saddens me is that I see everyone trying to sell their Mavic Air 2 at ridiculously low prices, defacing it and losing money to buy the Air 2s

  • @dronebubba

    Another great review! I love how you cover all the bases- the highs, the lows, the good, the bad. One thing I'd like to point out about the price gouge for the Air 2S over the Mavic Air 2 is that they especially get you on the Fly More Combo version. On the Mavic Air 2, you pay a $189 premium for the upgrade to the Fly More Combo (988-799=189). On the Air 2S, you pay a $300 premium for the upgrade (1299-999=300). The stuff you get with the Fly More Combo version is mostly the same between the two. The batteries are even identical. Yet one cost $300 more and the other one only cost $189 more. Why the $111 price difference? And yes, they got me too. I have the Fly More Combo version of both drones. I guess I should sell the Mavic Air 2, but it was my first drone and I've been in love with it for almost a year now; it feels like I'm betraying it somehow. We used to have such great times, but I have barely even acknowledged the Mavic Air 2 since the Air 2S came home with me from Best Buy. Does that make me a bad person?

    • @baalzamon3593

      I'm like you, I have both. I use my Air 2 still for riskier shots like fireworks or footage where I might get stormed on. It's also something I can loan out or use as a backup drone if something happens to the Air2s.
      It's nice to have extra batteries and chargers that work with both drones

      Man, you must be my brother or something. I also felt guilty cheating on my drone. 😄 Three months after I bought my Mavic 2 Pro, I bought a Mavic Mini out of curiosity.
      Man, I didn't touch the 2 Pro in almost four months. I knew I was missing out with the Mini, but it was so tiny and cute, I had a lot of fun with it. 🤪
